something that connects to an existing narrative. in a situation like this, you don't want to be in a position where you have to educate voters and give them new information. you want to rely on information they have. voters have a lot of information about romney and binge capital and the image a previous guest talked about. the gordon gekko of capitalism. it has a better chance to gain a foothold with the 9.9% unemployment rate. i would look for the super pack helping gingrich to plug into the narrative. >> yeah, gingrich blames his loss in iowa on negative ads. let's play a new ad attacking romney on his abortion record. >> he governored pro-abortion. he appointed a pro-abortion judge. put planned parenthood on a state medical board but failed to put a pro-life on the same

board. mandated health care with taxpayer funded abortions. massachusetts moderate, mitt romney, he can't be trusted. >> this is a very important issue to voters of south carolina. >> this is exactly the kind of ad that does the work. what the nasty ads do is shrink. people don't bother coming out. if you convince people there is some candidate who is so critically important on an issue either against them or for them, this is a person if i go vote for them, it's going to make a big difference on the one issue i care about, that can be the one thing that breaks through. if everybody is a nasty guy, they are all lying. if there's one thing i care about, that i deeply believe in and you can tell me this person will protect or reject that one right, that could be enough to get me out to the polls. they are hoping the pro-life piece will be that issue.
10:52 am
it's not clear in 2012, with this economic crisis whether the pro-life issue remains the issue for south carolina voters. >> melissa, welcome to the msnbc family. bob, thank you. good to see you again. >> melissa's new show starts here in february. today's tweet of the day comes from a friend of the show. charles blow. quote, i have seen more people doing the electric slide at a family reunion than voted for perry tonight. laughing so hard about to hurt myself. charles.

call the number on your screen. when bp made a commitment to the gulf, we knew it would take time, but we were determined to see it through. today, while our work continues, i want to update you on the progress: bp has set aside 20 billion dollars to fund economic and environmental recovery. we're paying for all spill- related clean-up costs. and we've established a 500 million dollar fund so independent scientists can study the gulf's wildlife and environment for ten years. thousands of environmental samples from across the gulf have been analyzed by independent labs under the direction of the us coast guard. i'm glad to report all beaches and waters are open for everyone to enjoy. and the economy is showing progress with many areas on the gulf coast having their best tourism seasons in years.
