lubricated weather vain to issues of the day. there's an issue on the flip flops as it relates to trust. governor romney enjoys firing people, i enjoy creating jobs. i believe it is now time for our party to unite around the candidate best equipped to defeat barack obama. despite our differences, i believe that candidate is governor mitt romney. >> and threw have it. jon huntsman endorsing mitt romney. all right, how much weight does this count for, this e endorsement? >> it does not matter much, because the universe of voters that support jon huntsman will not check with him before they make a move, but he is freeing up small blocks, small blocks matter, of people who are not natural rick perry voters if they were thinking about with huntsman.

his vice presidehunt -- as his president, if he did that so he got that for it, huntsman is a true moderate, romney is a fake moderate. >> people can say, he came out with a full throttled -- i cannot speak today, of paul ryan's plan, which is a conservative plan. and you know, term of fiscal conservativism, jon huntsman is more conservative. sgle is conservative, but he got cast as a moderate because he sounded sane. he never got more than 1% or 2% in the polls. he endorsed when the largest newspaper endorsed him. he does not have currency to

give, but to a agive to the ide that he gives up the pcht rarag vote to romney. >> let's look at what the views are in the race overall of santorum. >> moderates are backing moderates. that is sort of the bottom line. i think it's important that we eventually consolidate this race and to the extent that that can happen through the voting process -- >> rick santorum, trying make a play for the conservative evangelical vote in the south. mitt romney may or may not get that. he is leading in the polls if he wins south carolina, it's over. do we agree with that? >> yes. >> you look on skeptically? >> i think the whole situation in south carolina comes down to something we were talking about

earlier, there's a desire to just get barack obama out of office. and i don't think that there's any particular afinity for romney or santorum. i think, there will become a practical voter block that will line up behind mitt romney simply in the interest of moving on and moving barack obama out of office. >> and that is a good move to the poll that shows romney is up 19 points to 55% in terms of best chance of beating obama and gingrich is down 22 points to 13%. we just mentioned rick santorum, but, i'll not call him the elephant in the room, the angry teddy bear in the room or angry attack muffin, whatever you want to say, newt gingrich is still in it and not slowing down. i want to play, he has a new ad his super pac has a ad showing

that is. the difference is that gephardt had a lot of money to run ads not web ads that go viral and you laugh about them on sunday political shows but ads on at dinner time, gingrich does not have that kind of fire power. gingrich loves to attack people with this kind of stuff, it's democrats and republicans, there's a myth that he is bipartisan, he has said thingss about reagan. >> there's a lot of winks. >> and we will be talking about his call on romney to release his tax returns. we will talk about smart transparency or like putting a gun to your head, will the call for romney's tax returns backfire? that is next on "now." i was on the highway praying, i said god show me how the get -- i pulled up to a stop sign and his bus was there. ? that was ruth williams talking about how he tracked down mitt romney in south carolina, she ended up getting about $50 after telling him about her financial hardships. that is one of the more uncomfortable moments to campaign trail on many, many levels, what did you guys make of it? >> as an african american woman, it g acalles me, it played intoe stereo type of black people. you know, here let me lay $50 on

this woman. it plays into the conservative mean, that you do not need actually programs that the government puts in place to help people in need, we will give them charity. the church will take care of them. i'll give them $50. >> i agree with where you end up on it. i worked for candidates and people stand up and raise their personal problems. so they talk about how they cannot pay this bill or they went to this government agency and had a problem. it's a difficult thing for candidates, is it a case worker issue do i tell you to send letters and then there's a human heartful response, someone is hurting and they need help, so the point i have here, i my that mitt romney's response was she needs help, right? but the problem is not just giving the cash, although your

criticisms are on point, but that is not how he legislates. they have a policy that they cannot defend one on one because he feels so bad saying no, which is his government response to her. >> there's a bigger problem, he gives this lady $50 and that is nice. but that is to make up for the people that he put out of work? i have no problem with capitalism, i have a problem with this being your one way of making yourself feel better for screwing people over. >> isn't this is a change in tone, romney had to drive far to get to work and he said that is good, are you staying competitive. someone that has time and time again looked at voters and said tough, it's the marketplace. >> there are convenient elements to this style, makes me cringe.

you have a black woman becoming a mascot for the campaign, she needs financial assistance, and you are confirming with how people deal with their poverty and seek out the assistance of a wealthy white man to hand her aide and then she mentions she was led there by god and one of romney's problem is how the people in south carolina may evaluate his religious views. >> the audience, this is conservative, white voters in south carolina, who are predispos predispopredi predisposed to say dependent black woman. >> i think that there's is still a clash here to what jimmy is saying, between how you run your business and whether that is the right template for how you run

mitt romney has said time and time again that jesus christ is his lord and savior, there was an article outlining the differences there's no holy trinity, there's a heavenly mother, there's previous beliefs in the mormon church including that individuals went to heaven and got planets named after them. do you think that south carolina voters are looking at romney's religion and thinking it's an issue or does this economy wipe out concerns that they have? >> i have a couple of thoughts that may be controversial, but let me put them out there. >> you love controversy. g >> i do. i have said on this show and others that i do not think that romney can win south carolina because of his religion. i spent the better part of this weekend having conversations with friends and family back home and i can tell you that i

think that romney could get a win. not because people think he is a good christian, or that he is in touch with them or because he has great economic policies, i think that south carolina residents will do something interesting. they will hold their noses because they hate barack obama so much. they do not like barack obama because he happens to be black. it's just that simple. and i'll give you two good example ps s of that. a woman that is close to me said in 2008, in the primary when he beat hillary clinton, she is a democrat, her whole life and she is a big hillary supporter and i said you are going to switch to obama and she said no i cannot vote for that black guy. >> you still think that race trumping everything? >> i do. they hate him so much. fast forward to now, a friend

has an obama sign, two realtors called her and said, would you please take down your obama signs, you are devaluing home prices that are on the market. now, i'm sorry, you can call that whatever you want. it's racism, it's in your face -- >> or maybe democratic homes don't sell -- we will talk more about this later on in the show, it's of course martin luther king day. where do you square on that? >> i am 100% in line with jimmy. south carolina is certainly a place where racism is palpable and an ongoing concern. it absolutely is. and in addition to that, i think that there's a degree of, i guess willingness to say these things more openly in south carolina than in other parts of the country.

so, i think you'll have some people who really come together around that idea. people who would ordinarily perhaps be inclined for someone that does not express openly evangelical religious views, but likely that they are going to find community around the idea that they cannot have a black president again. i think that race is the critical point. >> you have the electability issue. and santorum, you have a traditional christian conservative but he is not seen as someone that can beat barack obama. >> can i say one thing, i do not think it talked about, i have not said it, but herman cain, that was supposed to exist with the republicans. the difference between cain and obama and it does not get talked about a lot, it's the marriage issue, barack obama is not just

tomorrow, speaker j eer john bo will likely be fighting members on both sides of his party. congressman cleaver, thank you for joining the program. >> good to be with you, happy mlk day. >> happy mlk day to you too. congressman, the president said and seems to be positioning himself to have more of a hands off approach. i wonder what your plan is in congress and how you hope to achievet given the current climate we have in washington? >> ivy the president is making the right decision, anyone that gets too close to congress will get tainted. we have a situation where we are being congress like. very little is going to happen, this week of course, we will take up the debt ceiling discussion again and hopefully

we will approve the debt krceilg and move on, but i don't think that the american voters and taxpayers wi taxpayers will see very much coming from congress during the next few months because everyone is preoccupied with trying to make sure they don't give the president any kind of victory that can be used during the campaign. and when you add that to the fact that john boehner, who frankly, i like, i think he is a good guy. he finds himself walking between the demands of the tea party and the expectations of leadership. and that is, quite often, he has been in a situation where he agreed with the president and with harry reid and with the republican leadership in the senate but then he has difficulty getting the more conservative wing of the republican caucus to go with

him. i don't see that changing at all until after perhaps the november election. >> the take a way from that is don't look for much come frg congre -- coming from congress in 2012, is that fair? >> that is fair. the voters are used to kpe ed dg the best, but there will not be much progress, it pains me to say that because the american public demands more and deserves more, but we have this pathological partisanship that is growing by the day and that is going to prevent just about anything from happening. >> i think it's worth mentioning that we e-mailed the speaker's office and they said do we wish we could do more? of course, always, but in new year we will draw a nice contrast between us working and

the president campaigning full time. do you think the republicans lost a chance to get substantial conservative reforms given the fact that nothing will happen this year and they may not have the opportunity come 2013? >> absolutely. i think early on, the republican party missed a chance, because barack obama even to the dismay of many democrats, maybe most particularly his base, became upset because of his obsession with working with the republicans and compromising. i do believe that during those days the republicans could have fashioned some legislation that the president might have accept is ed, as we move toward the campaign it's clear the president is saying i wasted a lot of time for not and now i'm going to campaign against a

do-nothing congress. i was looking at some old speeches and i think that president obama is taking a lot from harry truman whose district i represent now. and i think he will continue to do it. >> give them hell harry. >> yes. >> is there no sense that the house freshman tea party caucus has learned anything here. it was said that with a 25 seat majority you need to be together in order to governor. i believe many many members have more reasonable expectations now. is there the slightest possibility that they will try to come together? >> absolutely not. at the same time that this is happening all of them have to run for re-election. and the are red districts that they are running in are mad of

presidential race. congressman cleaver, we look at unemployment rates in the black community, it's nearly twice the national average and i want to bring up a quote that you mentioned to the "wall street journal" in august of last year, i am frustrated with the president, house and senate, the president and his white house team is trying to minimize the discussion of race as it relates to job creation. this is something that i think we have batted around for a while in the previous couple of months, to what degree do you feel the president has to target job creation specifically in the african american community in this country? >> he attempted to do that with his jobs' proposal, he did address long-term unemployment. that would be those african americans who are part of the 16% unemployment level that is almost depression levels if you consider the people unemployed and the people discontinued looking for employment. i think the president is trying

address it. and the other side of it is, if the president did that, many of us also believe that he would be tagged by the extreme right, not republicans, extreme right as giving preferential treatment to african americans, the president is in a very tough spot and we in the congressional black caucus recognize that. it's a tough situation, a white president, frankly, could be pushed a great deal more than we would push president obama because nobody would accuse him or her of being partial toward african americans. so it's a tough spot, and it means we have a long way to go in terms of race relations in the country and the president has, i think, moved through

these troubled waters about as well as any african american could, becoming the first black president. >> congressman, this is arie from the nation magazine, thank you for joiningjoin iing us. >> sure. >> the boundaries in american politics can depe politics can change, in the area of racial justice and our criminal justice system though, senator webb came out with a very big proposal to try to deal with a lot of the differences we see based on race in crime and punishment in america. it was something that animated dr. king and remains s a proble today. as you know, other than in small areas like the crack cocaine disparity, the larger issues have not been tackled by this

congress or quite frankly by this white house, where do you come down on that and do you think that there's anything that congress can do in that important area? >> i think that congress has to deal with the inequality in the judicial system. there have been attempts to do that. we were successful with the crack cocaine issue. but it's going to be more difficulty to do it in other areas, simply because we have got one reality that is painful and then we have got one prejudice that also creates pain. the reality is that we have to reduce crime in the african american community. because the failure to do so gives the bigegest weapons to dissuede anybody of having any opinions about justice that would lean toward african americans. on the other side, i think we

have a situation where the problems are so great, and the cooperation in congress is so little that we cannot address the issues. if you talk about a controversial topic in congress, it's not going to go anywhere. now, i recognize, perhaps as well as anyone, that the road to racial nirvana, if you will, is up hill. and so we are not going break any speed records getting there. we are making progress, it just has not been at the level that we need it. and we have had, frankly a slight set back over the last few years because i think the vocal minority has taken control of the dining room discussion. >> congressman, i wonder what you make of the national conversation, specifically the

presidential race. gingrich has called president bomb the food stamp president and rick santorum back tracked after saying that he did not want to make black people's lives better by giving them someone else's money. and mitt romney said income equality should be talked about in quiet rooms. i asked herman contain about what he thought about his party's embrace of racial differences, he had no response. how do you think this discourse gets us there or sets us back? >> well, first of all, i think that republican african americans or african americans who are republicans are making a big mistake in giving their leadership some leeway that they don't deserve just like democrats would not deserve to be for given easily if they made

those kinds office statements. one of the first things is, if republicans, black republicans are really committed to trying get more african americans in the party, what they need to do is make sure that all the candidates that are running for president in the republican column are visiting memorial services for martin luther king, doing something to observe the birthday of a great american. number two, i think that we are at a very ugly point where these statements are made and african american leaders are reluctant to just come in with both guns firing because, you know, then we are the ones who are playing the race card. and, so, for the most part these guys are able to say this.

welcome back, it's time for what now? friends to panel, we have been talking about outrageous ads this campaign season, and there have been many but this one from steven colbert is my favorite outrageous ad, let look at it. >> as head of bain capital, he carved up companies and got rid of what he could not use. if mitt romney believes -- >> corporations are people, my friend. >> then mitt romney is a serial killer. he's mitt the ripper. >> mitt the ripper. there's so many things to talk about here. is first to me is charges of

wild allegations from outside groups. this will continue onwards. this is obviously the extreme example of it. >> this is a son of south carolina, steven colbert, he grew up in south carolina, he is crazy. i love it. he is brilliant. you wonder where people under 30 get their tv, this is where they get their news. >> and it a triple shot, number one, it goes after a position about corporate personhood and number two it goes after the tone and absurdity about the way you can make crazy charges and get away wit and it goes after the real animating principal here that colbert has been on for over a year, which is the role of money and these shell gam games in politics. and it does it in a way that the fun, because what i just said is

not fun. >> it's true but worth saying. it's interesting and i think the use of comedy to drive home a serious point and steven colbert is a great example of that. speaking of comedy i'll use that to go to a golden globes discussion. i was struck by the fact that the best stuff coming out of hollywood in my humble opinion is on television not on the big screen. you have home land, boss, game of throwns, episodes, enlightened. what is happening to the movie industry? >> i'm not the guy that ask, i am the only gay man in america that has never watched tv. i have never watched modern family, i am a bad, bad, gay. >> do you just watch movies? >> you know what i watch? msnbc, boom. >> that is all that you need to watch. i want to move on to back to the

race a little bit. rick perry, commenting on the video of american troops, or marines, said what is disturbing to me is the over the top rhetoric from this administration and their dislike for the military. to call what they did a criminal act is over the top. >> this is a war crime, i think these kids should be prosecuted to the fullest. if afghanistan soldiers had done it to american soldiers, the country be in an up roar. >> and it's not respectful of the military. it's being condemned within the military and it exposes our troops to danger, if it's seen and it is, it puts the troops at
