the italian cruise liner tragedy appears to be worsening. 25 passengers and four crew members are now unaccounted for and the ship's captain is appearing in a courtroom. michelle kosinski has the latest. >> reporter: rescuers fighting their way while there is time to find people who might still be trapped deep within the costa concordia, had to pull back because of weather. divers on a good day can barely see. >> it's dark and also we -- we are losing the track of our way. >> reporter: among the missing, american retirees jerry and barbara hile of minnesota. still emerging video shows how a vacation three hours in devolved into a desperate push to escape.

>> people were passing out. people were getting nervous. people were having chest pains. i was having chest pains and having anxiety because i don't know how to swim. >> reporter: infrared video shows people inching down the hull in the dark. blaming the captain for making an unauthorized decision to steer off course closer to an island. he is also under suspicion of abandoning ship while passengers still scrambled for their lives. >> that was michelle kosinski reporting from italy. back here in the u.s., republican presidential hopefuls squared off in south carolina last night for their 16th televised debate. jon huntsman dropped out leaving mitt romney with four remaining rivals on the attack. tracie potts joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. without jon huntsman who dropped out earlier in the day, this

debate was rough from the beginning with mitt romney on defense. >> i know that people will come after me. i know president obama will come after me. but the record is pretty darn good. >> reporter: slammed for heading an investment firm accused of mass layoffs, romney did say he'll consider releasing his tax records this spring. >> i have nothing in them to suggest there's any problem and i'm happy to do so. >> we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money. >> reporter: some of the sharpest exchanges in this fox news channel debate involved negative ads like ron paul's on rick santorum. >> only had one problem is i couldn't get all the things any wanted to say this one minute. >> reporter: newt gingrich versus romney. and the ad romney's pac ran against santorum. >> if i had something the super pac that was supporting me that was inaccurate, i would go out and say stop it. that you're representing me and

you're representing my campaign. stop it. >> as you know, that's something which is completely out of the control of candidates. >> it would be mice if governor romney would exercise leadership on his major donors to take falsehoods off the air. >> reporter: those ads are now saturating carolina airwaves with the primary just four days away. there were also sharp disagreements about whether the u.s. can indefinitely detain terror suspects. president obama has okayed that. mitt romney agrees. ron paul says not if they're u.s. citizens. and rick santorum says citizens have the right to appeal. lynn. >> tracie potts for us in washington. thank you. last night on the ed show, he talked with martin o'malley of maryland about mitt romney's record as a job creator and history of changing his mind on certain issues. >> mitt romney has big, big problems at a time when all of us as americans want to know what we can do as a country to

create jobs. here's a guy who in the private sector had no success creating jobs. in fact he made money for wealthy investors by actually stripping companies of jobs. and if you look at his performance as governor of the state of massachusetts, the commonwealth of massachusetts, he actually had that state ranked 47th among 50 states in job creation when he was governor. so will this is not a man who can claim any success in creating jobs. in fact quite to the contrary. and his flip-flops, the waffling back and forth, i think the line that's going to stick with everyone is not that tepid endorsement by jon huntsman, but his rightful observation that mitt romney's not running for the white house. he's running for the waffle house. he's been on both sides of every important issue. >> lean forward with the ed zone week nights at 8:00 eastern right here on msnbc. here is your first look at

other news going on around america. a gas leak explosion turned a new york townhouse into a pile of rubble. the blast shook the entire block forcing neighbors to evacuate their homes. firefighters had just arrived to inspect the leak just moments before the home erupted into flames. four people were injured. over a hundred firefighters battled a massive fire as it ripped through an office building at a california oil refinery. the raging inferno burned for at least four hours before it was brought under control. there were no reports of any injuries. at least two people were hurt when a runaway horse jumped over a barricade at a dallas parade. a handler was walking the animal at the martin luther king event when it apparently got spooked. police officers captured and calmed the horse before bringing it back to the parade route. finally, instead of going to the golden globes, jack black decided to party for a purpose. the actor spent the evening with over 300 kids and adults who

survived kidney disease at an annual prom event. in honor of the event black was voted prom king. somewhere there is a high school football captain upset about that. and now for a look at your national weather, we turn to bill karins. >> he's forgiven for some of the bad movies he's done recently. >> i don't know. that will take some time. >> yes, it will. good morning, everyone. a little bit of snow last night for areas of new england. even southern new england. if you look out quickly, you'll see before it melts during the day today. probably a lot of schools will go on on schedule. temperatures are rising pretty quickly and the road crews have had plenty of time to get out there. but maybe you'll get lucky and get a delay. we are watching a little bit of snow left over from boston northwards especially up around southern new hampshire and southern maine. all the green on the map is rain. so from new york to philly,

d.c., all of pennsylvania, you don't have to worry about any snow covered roads. pittsburgh, on and off rain. even buffalo will get rain. a warm air mass has come in. notice we're at 46 right now to start your morning in pittsburgh. that's the warm air heading in to new england. we're already up to 42 in hartford. the only cold air that will hold on for probably the most slippery mornings will be areas of new hampshire and southern maine. also we had bad storms last night. large hail reported by st. louis. i haven't heard of any big tornado, but interstate 70 has not been a fun drive across central illinois and that line of storms is now heading for indianapolis. it will probably be there right during the heart of the morning rush ic picked up some snow last night. came ploi des moines, maybe an inch or two

by the end of it. chicago looks like you'll be a little too warm. mostly rain early this morning. i think milwaukee has a better chance of getting a couple inches here as we go throughout your early morning. and then you want to talk about snow, by the time we're done with tomorrow, seattle, washington could have 6 to 12 inches of snow. more snow than many of the biggest cities on the east coast have seen so far this winter. that's where the cold air is locked up. already getting snow showers and they'll see heavy snow. we're forecasting the mountains to get up to three feet and seattle possibility of 6 to 12. as far as the snow in the east, 1 to 3 over areas of wisconsin and it looks like northern michigan will also get good snow later today into tonight. so the forecast, bottom line for the east coast, if you're joining us miles per hour from the carolinas northwards, having that umbrella today, on and off rain. thunderstorms later today atlanta, new orleans. the middle of the country, that it's where the cold air is. coldest day of the winter for minneapolis with a high of 12. >> rub that in a little more,

good morning, everyone. hope you're having a beautiful morning. we are watching a little bit of light snow. you'll probably see about one to two inches on the surfaces. but getting a little bit of a break. also light snow around portsmouth, new hampshire. temperatures will be mild. notice they're in the fix in d.c. up to near 50 in will new york city. there's a warm surge of air heading your way. we do have strong storms this morning in illinois heading for indiana. one of the big stories that will happen weather-wise across our country is the snowstorm in the pacific northwest around seattle, we're expecting as much as 7 to 8, 9 inches of snow by tomorrow. and the middle of the country, we calm it down tomorrow. but seattle will have more snow so far than areas like boston and chicago. >> i don't think that will lost
