gingrich, possibly on the verge of winning south carolina. mitt romney barely hanging on, expected to speak live this hour. there's a look at that. we're tracking live evends from rick santorum and ron paul as well this morning, but it's newt gingrich literally stealing the show and possibly won the night in the first five minutes. here he is taking on the media and the moderator john king over his second wife's explosive allegations that newt wanted an open marriage. >> it's destructive, visucious negative nature of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, and i an appalled you would begin a presidential debate with a topic like that. let me be quite clear. the story is false. every personal friend i have who knew us in the period says the story is false. i'm tired of the elite media

protecting barack obama by attacking the public. so a stellar performance last night. let's talk about dana milbank. nice to see you this morning. let's talk about the buzz basically created out of the first five minutes from last night, newt hitting it out of the ballpark, a grand slam, people say he won the debate in the first five minutes. the crowd obviously cheering, standing to their feet at certain points, but what about the republican establishment truly worried he may clinch the gop nomination? >> they have good reason to be quite ainge now. you know, this is newt's playbook that he's done at each debate, attack the media. that works really well in his republican debate audiences what he's doing -- the odds are still against him, but he is ensuring

he has not the remotest chance of winning. that's why i think the republicans, i give them enough credit to think they're smart enough to know not to give barack obama the give of newt gingrich. after performances like that, isn't he the likely candidate? >> look, there are many patterns that say he's surging again. we've seen one, two, three surges before, but there are many reasons why logic should ultimately prevail in this kay. there's no question he can be quite electric in moments like that, but by the same token, he carries far more baggage than anybody else on that stage. you can be sure that president obama will indeed be singing a happy tune if that's what occ s occurs. >> i want to talk about how mitt

again, repeatedly on this issue of personal wealth, whether it's curie think about tax returns or fessing up wlu it's allowing he has these investments in the cayman islands, but using this "i didn't inhale" explanation of saying i wasn't actually using it as a haven, all of this making it look lie john kerry did to some extent, al gore to some extent, as somebody in part different from the electorate. that's a dangerous position to be in. that's why, despite his pseudowin in iowa and a win in new hampshire, he seems to have hit a new ceiling. newt is like a bull in a china shop. you want to bring in the founder of the 538 blog. you have this interesting debate, projections from south

carolina. >> sure this is pretty telling. >> this has flip literally in about 48 hours voters did not react well to romney's performance. we'll still wait to see how they react, but when you look like you're going the nominee and say, no, i'm not gooding to release my tax returns, i think we react badly. we still have voters who have to cast ballots. i think maybe there's a bit of a backlash. i want to show everybody how rick santorum did last night, certainly a strong showing, but we need to bulk about what this performance will get him. >> grandiosity has never been a problem with newt gingrich.

returns an hour before hitting that stage. how are voters reacting? >> i think it's a good question. senior advisers would say we're doing just what everyone -- likely in the beginning to mid time in april, clearly people here are not satisfied with that largely, and he hasn't helped himself with a couple stumbles, for one acknowledging he pays an effective tax rate of 15%. he referred to the fact in speaking fees he only takes in not too much, which turned out to be roughly $374,000 between february of 2010 and february of 2011. not the fact that he sort of hedged on what he's going to do specifically about his tax returns, i think people want that transparency, that same sort of confidence ging rich said it's not true what they said about me and my wife, and they're looking for the same

thing with romney. >> it looks like people have up their umbrellas, the juxtaposition of where newt is going today, i don't know if it's going to be sunshiny or not, but he definitely has a bright day ahead of him after last night's performance. where does it stand with newt gingrich in south carolina? >> he's on fire right now. he's like a mobile fireworks stand. we're getting sparks just about everywhere we go. that's what the former speaker likes. in south carolina that's politics here, rough and tumble, not for the faint of heart. he came through limping through iowa, new hampshire, he lives next door in georgia. he gave them the kind of red meat they look for here. el he's had a good week. >> welcome to the south, said newt gingrich. thank you, gentlemen. i pressured it.

the big question last night, newt gingrich being asked about his ex-wife's marianne's explosive interview, his republican rivals refused to take the bait on this one. >> this country is a very forgiving country. this country understands that we are all fallen. >> john, let's get on to the real issues. >> it is people have to sort this out, but i think steading standards are very important and i'm very proud my wife of 54 years is with me tonight. >> despite the controversy as a man who paints himself guided by a strong sense of family values, he seems to be given a pass. op-ed columnist with "new york times" charles blowe joins me. it's fact, it's the allegations that marianne says he wanted an open marriage that seems to be ruffling a lot of feathers.

how in the evangelical buckle, which is south carolina of the bible belt, able to react the way it is, giving a standing ovation into i have beenly to his responsible about this. newt has been embarrassed by this kind of wife swapping business already in his career. he has ballotsed his way back. people are kind of resistant to punish a politician or anything person twice for the same offense. what you got yesterday was a few more salacious details. they -- he and calista may have conducted their affair in her bedroom in d.c. it's not what you want to hear, but voters are really reluctant to come back at a person twice, particularly when they have acknowledged themselves, yes, i did something wrong, and i have asked for forgiveness and have moved past that point.

gentlemen, it's nice to have you here. chad, i want to start with you. we saw in iowa, new hampshire now south carolina that last-minute surge, do you think newt gingrich can pull it out, or even rick santorum. >> i've been saying for weeks, don't think that yesterday's polls or what happened in iowa or new hampshire is going to lock this down. voters are fiercely independent, they want to make their decision, they're tailing a good hard look, and of course we're being inundated with tv ads, mail and robo-calls. i think people were tuning in last night, and certainly the one monday night as well, and those things are helping them to mare their decision. >> we're talking about $12 million, who is winning this ad war?

>> well, i think you can look at the ads, and i watched a bunch this morning and last night, clearly the antiromney or non-romney forces are dominating the air waves right now. he's been offmessage all week long, especially on his taxes. he said he made some money speak, it returns out to be $400,000. yesterday money in the caymans. the whole tax issue has dominated while newt has dominated the debates. so i think the ads are tough and the performance of romney feeds into that. >> chad, when we talk about hout newt gingrich is surging in the south, a place where he was excited to go, and welcome the other candidates to prove his strength, now we have these allegations from his ex-wife how he carries himself in his personal life. how do you think that will

translate with evangelical women in the state of south carolina. >> south carolina is an evan yell cal, social conservative state. we believe in redemption and forgiveness. i think more importantly what you're seeing out there is newt has gotten some responses to some questions they don't -- so when you see these standing ovations i think what you're seeing a response to is where are these tough deep personal questions when obama hand hillary clinton ran. so i think they see an uneven playing field. >> but, chad, for a lot of people when they think about what he's famous for, it's for taking down bill clinton, and monica lewinsky, and the hypocrisy birthed out of that. when he takes the, and now his wife marianne says he wanted an

insider/outsider contrast, but what they gain is an appeal somewhat with hispanic voters. it's a huge issue, immigration in this community, whereas gingrich has managed to walk a very fine line. so i think he's a mixed balance. >> when we talk about romney, robert, is the elite right so willing to take on newt gingrich, into you they see this social disconnect? >> i don't think so. remember, the elite right were down in texas a couple weeks ago and they voted for rick santorum. they are that newt gingrich is a smart guy. but is he the most electable? i think the answer is no. i think the real question is, and this is where i think we need a substantive question later, who is mitt romney going to choose as his republican vice presidential nominee.

folks, and a handful of them, and we're talking four or five, they say enough is enough. there are a small number of folks who feel like he's starting to make a mockery of the process, but their voices are being drowned out by the masses that there's already a long line forming at the cain rally that stephen colbert is throwing nearby. i also want to point out that i watched that debate last night, and for a chunk of it i was standing next to herman cain and got a chance to talk to him about this colbert stuff, and he said it's just a whole lot of fun. >> craig melvin in charleston, a good setup, because in less than an hour, herman cain will be live with alex wagner, so you can catch him here ahead of the 1:00 p.m. rally. craig, thanks again. other stories topping the news right now. dive teams working around the wreck have been forced back above the surface after the cruise ship shifted again today.

there are new concerns the $450 million cruise ship could be slowly slipping off the rocky reef off the tuesday cam island of giglio, as the plot thickens with reports of a young woman seen with him shortly before the crash. she said dinner with him and has defended his actions that night. six marines were killed in southern afghanistan today. officials say there's no indication that the chopper was shot down. meanwhile, france is threatening to suspend military operations in afghanistan and withdraw the entire force from the country, this after four french soldiers were shot and killed by an afghan soldier today. this is the second such attack that's happened this month. a wircht storm is expected to move from the midwest to the northeast today. chicago may get up to 8 inches today, and new york could get up to 4 inches overnight and into saturday morning as well. at least 280 flights have been

press corps there. what surprised you the most? >> it's been an honor. it's really surprising to see how the candidates interact with each other. i've had a great time doing it. it's been surprising, seeing how they act with different people and thousand they treat us as kid reporters. >> it looks like you two are a force to be reckoned with. you said in your biography you thought the experience would improve my writing and get my comfortable with meeting a deadline. how are you doing so far on the goals you set for yourself? >> i definitely have more confidence with meeting new people and interviewing people. i now definitely can work with a deadline. >> zach, what's it been like for you? are you fulfilling some experiences you've seen in role

the massachusetts candidates raced more than a million yesterday. that's a pretty good haul, right? the same day scott brown officially launched his reelection campaign. brown is hoping to keep the seat by touting his independent voting record. well, we continue our real wives of the campaign trail segment today with a woman whose marriage is certainly under the microscope today. calista gingrich, third wife of newt gingrich, he openly admitted to having a extra-marital affair with calista while married to his second wife. that second wife told her side of the story to "nightline" last night. >> it was occurring in my bedroom in our apartment in washington. he always called me at night. he always ended with "i love you" while she was there listening. in my home. he did tell me once that she was

going to help him become president. >> and what was your reaction to that? >> it didn't look like help to me. >> joining us notice nia malika henderson, reporter for "the washington post." obviously this is not at flattering portrayal of calista by gingrich's second wife or flattering portrayal of newt. do you see her coming under much more scrutiny in the wake of this interview? >> you're right, it may be an inconvenient interview for gingrich, but i think one of the things that's also true is this has been out here for a really long time. people have gotten used to the fact that newt gingrich has been married three times, that he has been unfaithful to his wives. that's something he's admitted to. you saw him last night really push back on that. almost in talking to people, even women, they say this was a disgruntled ex-wife.

they heard what she had to say about newt gingrich supposedly asking for an open marriage, and he feel like his personal business is his personal business. he has been very open about this, and calista gingrich is always out on the stump by his side. in that way it makes it appears it's not something they're hiding, not something they're ashamed about, this is his marriage, this is his wife, and that's that. >> ka lisa made news early the in campaign when it was revealed her husband had a tiffany's credit line. is she someone that the average american woman could relate to? someone they could see as potential first lady material? >> you know, that is another question, i think. she does have a very almost regal appearance. she's always wearing pearls. she's got a lot of diamond rings that she wears. you know, there she is standing

next to newt gingrich, who is often talking about positive, talking about kids being janitors in this school and then you have a woman who looks very well put together, looks like she's wearing expensive jewelry. so in that way, this whole idea when first ladies relate to the commonman, i don't necessarily thing that calista gingrich is necessarily that relatable, but people seem to like newt gingrich. at least some of them have forgiven him for his sins, and wee see have to see how it plays out. >> nia malika, thank for your time. sad breaking news. we're just learning that singer etta james, she's best known for songs such as "at last" and "tell mama." she was 83 years old. in america, we believe in a future

in their own communities? >> in north carolina, it's going to be an important local issue this spring, north carolina is the only state in the country without, or the only state in the south without one of these anti-gay marriage amendments. and that issue is going to be, you know, at the polling place, this may and it doesn't get any closer to home for folks in chapel hill, having a gay mayor, than that. you know, and we all know, we as mayors know how important equal treatment by the government is to all of our citizens. and it becoming increasingly important that we commit ourselves to treating all of our citizens equally and fairly and that, in order to enhance what our -- make possible our hopes and dreams for our communities. >> chapel hill, mayor, mark
