romney had a 23-point advantage over newt gingrich. it was newt gingrich's debate performance that's still the political buzz story this hour. newt, yet again, took on the strategy of blaming the liberal media for questions about his character and his record as speaker of the house. >> i think the dedestructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this countrier to attract decent immediate to run for office. >> meantime, the huffington post says romney's camp is preparing for a possible loss. one saying it will be a long slau for the nomination. mitt romney said south carolina will be an uphill battle. >> i would like to win south carolina, but i know if the polls are right, regardless of who gets the final number, we're

going to get a lot of delegates. i want as many delegates as i can get. i want the most coming out of south carolina. i don't know what the numbers will be. >> yojoining us live is democra congressman from south carolina. thank you for your time. >> thank you for having me. >> why do you believe he had a 23-point lead in the polls, and now it's down to ten. >> well, there are two things converging in this state. one, mr. romney himself. he has allowed himself to be separated from the ordinary people. it's one thing to be wealthy, nobody begrudges him for that. it's another thing to try and make yourself different because of that wealth. that's what he has done with a lot of his words and phrases.

for him to say last night during the debate that he walked ordinary streets, everybody knows that's not true. for him to say he inherited nothing from his father. that everything he got he made it himself. that is absolutely not true. people are beginning to say this guy will say anything in order to get a vote, and he has separated himself from ordinary people. now, you got newt gingrich on the other side putting out his tax returns, showing that he may have paid somewhere around 30% income tax on his earnings. here is a guy with all that wealth and saying he's paid only 15%. he has separated himself from ordinary people in a way that newt only had to go halfway.

to do was be a hater to obama or an objector for obama and that's all you needed for your base. no, no. voters are interested in what you are going to do with me. how will by table top issues get better if you get elected? you just can't be against the other guy. you got to show me why it is i need to invest my precious vote in you and mitt romney -- >> i want to ask you, is that what newt gingrich is doing in your home state? there's been instances where he's referred to the president as this food stamp president and a woman flattered him by saying it was good that she showed juan williams his place in all of this. there's been a lot of talk about race and how it is, for some people, fuel for fire. making them want to get out and

vote against this president for whatever reasons or obvious reasons. it is true you have to put out ideas because what we saw in that debate, he's putting out more fire. >> what i said was, newt had to do his 50%. his 50% was consolidating his base. that's what he's doing with that kind of language. he does his anti-obama stuff, but newt has done a good job of consolidating his base. i don't like where his base is, but the fact of the matter is, using words and phrases like that tend to consolidate his base. that's what he has done to excite these voters and that's why with romney failing to connect and not talking about his vision for the future and with him consolidating his base, those two things have converged in such a way that mitt will benefit in the a very positive way.

me. we're bringing in ron from orangeburg, south carolina. let me get your feel on what folks are saying after the debate. >> reporter: good day to you. you see there's a pretty big crowd waiting for the former speaker. there's only a couple folks there at the conference down in charleston which he cancelled. people are still buzzing about that debate last night and how they think newt gingrich hit it out of the park. the ball may still be in the air. that's how much his supporters believe he hit that home run standing up saying he thought it was inappropriate for a presidential debate to be asked about his personal life in that way and a relationship that was dissolved 13 years ago. a lot of folks support him. they say it doesn't matter to them. they like his positions. they like the fact he's coming to south carolina with a fire and brimstone rhetoric. they like their politics rough

around the edges. he limped in here from iowa and new hampshire, really deflated after having some disappointing performances there. he could win this thing tomorrow. it seemed a week ago that was not possible. he had great week monday night in the debate calling president obama the best food stamp president this country has seen. a lot of folks think he's on major role here and he may be going so fast that he can't be stopped at this point. >> thank you. let's go to the romney campaign. peter alexander is standing by we have this new poll out. ten-point difference between rom ne romney and gingrich. they believe they could lose this. >> they recognize it's the possibility they could lose this. that's whoy they have tried to limit expectations. initially, it was the campaign, it was the first ever to win the

first two state, iowa and new hampshire had the potential to be the first gop candidate to win new hampshire, iowa and south carolina. now there's a good chance that they only win one of those three, but they made it clear they view this in long terms. they view the entire picture here as they discussed. already making plans for what will take place when they head to florida on sunday with the nbc debate scheduled for monday. mitt romney has been facing the toughest challenge in his entire campaign was in the tempest again today, physically a rainstorm when he and governor were hammered by rain. for this campaign, nape say it's a long view. they have always had that perspective and they are confident that no matter what happens, it will be close. they have the strength to continue throughout this. they brought bob mcdonald on

board today as a surrogate with his endorsements of mitt romney for the state of virginia. a state that they remind voters is a state that ron paul and romney, the only two name ons the ballot. newt gingrich didn't qualify. >> peter, thank you. now fo another story we have been following. it's uncertain whether texas will be able to hold its primary. it was already delayed once. it's scheduled for april 3rd. now there could be another delay as a result of the supreme court's decision ruling regardsing voting districts that favored minorities. pete williams joins us live. obviously, pete, this is a hot button issue. a lot of people has talked about the feeling among minorities that they are trying to be alienated. >> they had a big population gain and gained four more seats. the question was how should the

new congressional districts be carved out. the state legislature did it. they were immediately sued. the supreme court said the lower court that drew a map of its own didn't do enough to follow the broad out lineses that the legislature wanted to follow. the map won't be used. the supreme court sent it back and said the state court had to try again. the state legislature's map would given all of the seats to republicans. here is the trick in terms of the timing. state officials in texas have said in order to have the primary in april, the ballots need to be ready by february 1st. that's if you are generous with your time, eight workdays for today. for that lower court to come up with brand new map that will be used for this election. it will be used for this

welcome back to "news nation." defense officials confirm six u.s. marines were killed when their helicopter crashed in afghanistan. they were set to return home in march. the cause is still under investigation right now. officials say there was no signs of enemy fire at the time. this is obviously heartbreaking news for many reasons that these soldiers were coming home in march. what do we know about the investigation? >> reporter: u.s. military officials are telling us it appeared to have been a mechanical problem. they don't know what brought the

he helicopter down. it was a pretty sparsely populated area. no enemy activity there. it's looking more and more like it was, in fact, a mechanical problem. just another grim reminder that even the most routine missi mis can turn out to be dangerous. >> what's the latest response from french president ni. >> this is the result of four french soldiers who were killed by an afghan camp. he was quite blunt high pressure he said our shoeldiers help the afghan people defend themselves against the taliban and terrorists but not get shot at by the afghan military. he suspended all french military

we don't often see times when democrats and republicans are in agreement. this is case where they believe there is a real issue to try to save american jobs by going after sites, especially oversaes that take american excintellect property and try to steal it. it was an amazing show where so many individuals who love to use the internet but were sufficiently concerned that sites they like maight be affected by this. they e-mail and protested. you have a huge response to a public outcry. they are putting the brakes on. all the sides who were proponents of this agree there has to be something done about theft of property because it affects real americans jobs, not just the hollywood elites but people who work in the industry.

people are unemployed. we have a lot of mills and factories that have been closed down. people are struggle. >> reporter: the unemployment rate has not been below 9% in three years. it's one of the worst in the country. the real unemployment rate is closer to 16%. most of the losses have been in construction and manufacturing, but even the state's famously lucrative tourism has taken a hit. mickey backs run charleston grill, one of the most popular restaurants. >> the number of people coming is down. the amount of money that people are spending is down. >> reporter: the state's harsh economic reality has refocused the political debate. in 2008, they were evangelical social conservatives. >> this year they're out there, but jobs is competing with those social issues for the top spot in terms of priority when they

i think the big question today is the costa concordia slipping under water. they detected slight movement. enough to stop divers going under water. that means numuch longer waits r the families. the concordia is resting in two places but the remainder of it is unsupported. experts are trying to use robots and sonar to work out whether the movement is vibrations from water sloshing around in the hull or is it physically slipping. that would be incredibly dangerous because it's only about four feet away from a steep ledge and a big drop down. tamron, the other big news here today is yet more footage showing the chaos and confusion. crew telling passengers not to worry and that everything would

storm. >> reporter: they are up to 600 at o'hare and 100 at midway. that's 700 flights a t the two airports in chicago. if you get a flight, delay is going about an hour, two and a half hours. there's a ground stop. if you're trying to fly from an arp airport to chicago, you're probably not going anywhere. they are holding your flight at the gate and you're sitting at the terminal. look at this. here comes a plow up the sidewalk. we have guys and gals out here running. the street and sanitation didn't trying to stay ahead of the snowfall. a lot different from last thursday. temperatures are running in the upper teens. wind chill is about five or six. there's not a lot of wind with the snow. look at the skyline. it's virtually disappeared. visibility is a quarter mile or less. take a look at the radar. you see the snow in the midwest. this is heading east.

diagnosed? help us understand the need. what's the science? >> some of the diagnostic functions. some experts have difficulty telling the two a part. the category, doesn't necessarily dictate how they are being cared for. this effort is really trying to update the criteria using the latest understanding of science and delivering as much care as possible. >> what about the concern that perhaps some people will not get the services they need? i was astonished by the number. it says that a lifetime cost to care for an individual with individual, $3.2 million. >> that's right. it's a tremendous burden to family and individuals. i think the issue here really is we want to make sure the revision in diagnostic criteria
