missing toddler belongs to that of the little girl. what does it mean for the search for ayla. we will have that and more. thomas roberts, hope you had a great weekend. coming up, less than 24 hours before florida votes. campaign spending topped a staggering $24 million in the sunshine state. but the big number everybody is talking about today is 15. that's how many points mitt romney is ahead in florida in the latest nbs news marist poll. on par with the quinnipiac poll released. mitt romney on a roll through florida, trying to charm conservatives and latinos, taking targeted punches at newt gingrich. >> we were getting wailed on by newt gingrich, didn't respond well in south carolina. we decided we're going to respond. politics ain't bean bags, we made sure our message is out loud and clear. the idea someone running for
11:01 am
president was being paid by freddie mac at the time that was going on, $1.6 million, that irks people, and that's the real reason speaker gingrich had such a hard time. i also think people realize if they want to see change in washington, you can't just elect the same people to take different chairs, you have to have new people come in and take over. >> nbc's peter alexander is live in miami. we hear mitt romney say politics ain't bean bags. looks like he has taken that approach since leaving south carolina. is florida basically his to lose because of this big lead? >> i think they feel confident they're going to win in this state. he said to me 24 hours ago, we think we're going to win this state, certainly hope so. one of the things bufrg that as we go forward is the fact that 600,000 people across florida already voted by absentee or early voting, just a second ago, mitt romney came back to meet some of the reporters on the
11:02 am
press charter flight from jacksonville to tampa in the last ten minutes. our colleague on the plane sent me notes where romney came back and said to folks gathered there that he feels good, feels like this is different than how he felt in south carolina, that he has a sense that things are beginning to break his way. he was also asked, thomas, about newt gingrich's claim to stay in this all the way to the convention, and to use romney's words, that kind of talk is a good indication that someone thinks they are going to lose. the polls show romney leads by 15% his advisers show it is closer than that. same in new hampshire where they tried to reduce expectations to limit the belief system he was going to run away with this. they're trying to do that as well, if they have a double digit win in florida they can claim it as a big message from the republicans in the state. >> nbc's peter alexander in miami for us. thanks so much. we want to talk about his florida resurgence with richard
11:03 am
wolf. a lot of people are looking at this, seeing the fact there was a big "the new york times" article on the romney team resetting after south carolina, the debacle. is this mitt romney's to lose? he has done the work and organization to sew it up there. >> what you need to focus on is the amount of money romney spent over and above what gingrich spent. that's $12 million difference between the two of them. these numbers can be crazy. we lose track of what the scale is on these things, but the average senate race in the last election was $3 million. that's 12 million, four times that, just the advantage romney has had on the air waves. that had a real impact on the numbers. >> and a political writer for the miami herald, mark, ten different media markets in
11:04 am
florida, two different time zones. a lot of ground to cover there. let's look at the new quinnipiac poll showing 24% of florida republicans still may change their mind. is there a window cracked for newt gingrich, and if he loses big, how badly would his campaign be crippled moving out of florida? >> i don't know if there's a window cracked. he may have to knock out the window to get through this one. i can't think all the polls are wrong. at the very least, he is losing by 5 percentage points, at the most, 14 percentage points. you have to believe it is in there. mitt romney has been on the campaign trail for awhile, advertising in florida, on television, on radio, english and spanish, spending mailers, making phone calls. he has been doing it a month. there's almost 600,000 republicans that voted by early ballot. he probably banked a whole lot of votes and has the momentum. does it cripple him going forward? newt gingrich was living off the land when it was him and callista, when he had no staff,
11:05 am
could probably do it again. at a certain point, newt has to drop out, money dries up, only soich money that adelson will kick in to help him out. >> talk about how the narrative changed for mitt romney, changing the wealth conversation and business savvy back around to make it more of an asset going into florida voting. are polls showing electability the big concern, beating obama is the standout issue for florida republicans. romney winning that argument in the sunshine state but didn't in south carolina. would a win in the state of florida silence critics on the issue moving forward? >> we're seeing this flip around. a lot of volatility. it is changing state to state, and if you look at the issues question with values, you come up with something equal to electabili electability. february is better in terms of states moving forward for romney, but there's a lot of
11:06 am
time not much happens. you can see old debates about values, wealth, about their past resumes, both men coming to the floor once more. >> how is it that the candidate who says that he is going to veto proimmigrant legs, brought up self deportation of immigrants, how is he doing there in the state? how is that resonating with the huge voting block that's latino? >> well, according to our polls, he leads by two to one among hispanics, but florida is different from other states, different from the nation. our two biggest latino populations are cuban and puerto rican. cubans have a path to citizenship when they land on u.s. shores. puerto ricans are u.s. citizens, not as effected by the policy of immigration crackdowns or loosening being proposed.
11:07 am
they're more effected by tone and ten or of the immigration debate. that's what jeb bush and marco rubio warn the republican candidates to be aware of. on the rich thing, florida elected a very rich man to be governor in 2010. so the wealth argument to be used against mitt romney is not going to work. same with medicare fraud. governor rick scott headed a company after he left was fined a huge amount for medicare fraud. voters in the primary and general election still chose him for office. a slightly different electorate, but those attacks aren't working on mitt romney. >> mark ka putin oh of the miami herald, richard wolff. thank you. whether labeling romney a moderate or slamming him on romney care, he is down but not out and he is prepared to take this fight all the way. >> fact is on big, philosophical issues, he is for all practical purposes a liberal and i am a conservative and that's what this fight is going to be about all the way to the convention.
11:08 am
>> joining me this morning from washington, gingrich senior adviser david winston. nice to see you. talk about this decision to stay in the race until the convention, is newt gingrich in it to win it or to be the antagonist, somebody to bloody mitt romney as much as he can. >> he is in it to win it. again, this will be the fourth state. we will have 46 states to go. is this state potentially more favorable for governor romney than south carolina was? clearly. but as we move forward, newt gingri has states like texas, alabama, oklahoma, the governor will have states like michigan, kind of a second home, so i think what you're seeing is this is one of a multitude of states we're going to go through each state giving a sort of different dynamic to the context of this debate. all of them going to be in play. >> david, as we look at all the figures, rick santorum is scheduled to return to the campaign trail later today. his daughter, though, remains hospitalized, but we're happy to report his three-year-old daughter is doing better.
11:09 am
>> yes, that is good news. >> good news on that front. newt gingrich said yesterday that santorum should leave the race for the greater good. >> the fact is if you combine the santorum vote and gingrich vote, we clearly are the conservative, combined would clearly beat romney. we are down basically to the fewer conservatives there are, the better we're doing. >> david, our marist poll shows romney stands to gain more if santorum leaves the race. has there been discussion between gingrich and santorum's campaigns about that possibility? >> not that i am aware of, per se, but let me go back to what i think the speaker was saying, and i think one of the dynamics that you have seen consistently across the board is that while governor romney has been clearly going after, trying to -- in contrast, romney hasn't broken through the ceiling. still has a ceiling that exists.
11:10 am
his dialogue and discourse hasn't done anything to address that. when the speaker talks about you consider group the rest of the conservatives together, create a larger coalition than what governor romney has, that still stands. >> but if you talk about the ceiling that governor romney has, do you think there's still an even lower invisible ceiling for your candidate? >> no. i think what the speaker was saying is, again, looking at the other candidates, if they were not in the race, where would that vote likely go. and again, you look at a variety of surveys that tell you different things. ultimately, this is the challenge to the speaker, how do you get this back on issues, set up this contrast based on policy so people can see that ideological difference, and that becomes a central point. that's going to be the challenge in terms of moving beyond florida. >> david, want to talk about endorsements. newt gingrich picked up herman cain's endorsement, and he has another person out there speaking up, doing so in his defense. take a listen to this. >> so, if for no other reason
11:11 am
rage against the machine vote for newt, annoy a liberal, vote newt. keep this vetting process going, keep the debate going. >> so as we hear there sarah palin, she may have helped newt gingrich in south carolina when she said if she were in south carolina, if she was voting there, she would vote newt's way. can she help change the conversation and influence what people are thinking about newt gingrich in florida? >> i think to a large degree, even prior to being in terms of what she said about newt, she had been changing the process, changing some of the debate. she's a part of this discussion and at one point was potentially a candidate herself. obviously she will have an impact as she impacts the discourse. to what level? that's what we'll find out. in south carolina it helped. we will see how it helps moving forward into other states, perhaps she obviously would have stronger standing in. >> gingrich campaign adviser, david winston. nice to see you. thanks for your.

11:37 am
again that's something that gets worked out in this process. you know, i understand what karen is saying about the state of the union, which was a nice speech, but it didn't set any lofty agenda, didn't set a goal, didn't clearly define the future for the american people, and i think that's what the summer battle is going to be about between the eventual republican nominee and the president, but between now and then, you're going to have all of these contests, skirmish on like ability. in the base of the republican party, still has more up its sleeve in terms of what it wants to say. yeah, they may settle down, romney may get that energy behind him and run through the summer, and the convention, but right now i think that there are more things in the air than settled, and i think that's good overall. it strengthens the nominee for the fight in the fall, gives pima chance to cover, vet through some of the issues. >> karen, you're itching to get in there. go ahead. >> i think we are settled. mitt romney is rich uncle penny bags from the monopoly game,
