endorse ron paul? good day i'm andrea mitchell, live in washington. in florida polls at 7:on0 -- ths for joining us, first of all, what is the strategy now with this double digit projected lead for mitt romney, why go all the way to the convention is th? >> thanks for having me. what the speaker said just now is absolutely true. excitement has withbeen amazing. our volunteers are active and we feel good about the results today. regardless of the outcome you'll see a campaign driven by ideas and people. not just money driven campaign, that energy is energy that

carried over and will continue to carry the speaker into the next states that he goes. we are excited to see what the results are tonight. >> you were the campaign manager for marco rubio, senator rubio has not endorsed newt gingrich. what was the problem there? >> senator rubio is a great senator and friend and he has incredible respect for the speaker in fact, he said he admired him and always has, they have a great relationship. they have spoken over the last couple of weeks. but he made a decision to stay out of the race. and everybody respects that he is trying to stay above the fray. the support that rubio got came to the speaker. our grass roots organization is very much based on the same model and a lot of the same people working in the counties. the energy has been there, i see a second act of what we did with

the rubio campaign in getting the tea party movement and the social conservative movement, conservatives across the board from all places in the state behind one candidate and pushing really hard at the grassroots level to try to get him elected. that has been enencouraging. >> i want to play from you a mitt romney comment just now, or this morning, on the issue of negative campaigning, watch. >> you really can't whine will negative campaigning when he launched a negative campaign in south carolina, and the people that looked at the ads and concluded he is the most negative. >> is he right? >> that is laughable. i have to laugh. i'm stunned he would say that. they have out spent us 5-1. they have spent $15 million and most of that in negative campaigns we only spent $4 million in the state and that was only on tv. he probably spent another few million in mailers. he has blanketed the state with

a negative campaign and it is sad. we have seen a bit of a light turn out this morning. we hope it picks up in the afternoon. people just don't like the negative campaigns and it just unfortunate that governor romney would resort to those tactics, at the end of the day, we will focus on clarifying the record and drawing contrast and when we can do that we will. but the speaker's messages that been bold as you have seen with his policy ideas. we traveled, and had great foreign policy speeches. we had an on israel policy and national security in palm beach, a great speech on the economy overall. the speaker has made the campaign about ideas and it been based on people and not just money. i think that is something you'll see in the results. there will be surprises after tonight. therefore i think that absolutely the speaker's mission continues. he will continue to fight on and what you will see, is the

a washington insider, he had a chance to change that city and failed. time to bring somebody outside washington who has private sector experience. believe that person is mitt romney. >> we saw he did his laundry on election day. what are the candidates plans today? >> well, today he visited his headquarters here in tampa, he joined some of the volunteers in making get out the vote calls. he is back at his hotel now, he is preparing for a forum that is coming up thursday in nevada. which will feature all the candidates. so there's a lot to do to get ready, we have a loti itof conts coming and we are going to be battling for every vote as we are here in florida. >> and you have got a stretch now without debates, are we going to continue to see the huge, the huge expenditure of money by the romney campaign out pacing all of the competition? >> well, look, i think you need

three things to be successful in a political campaign. you need resources of course, you need a strong organization and a good message. and i think in mitt romney, republicans have found a combination of all three. we are not going to beat president obama and his $1 billion campaign machine with an under resourced and unorganized candidate. i think that mitt romney is the best person to contrast with president obama to chief failures of his administration, which has been his inability to get this economy going. >> good luck to you eric, and to all the candidates today. thank you very much. >> thank you. >> getting back to breaking news, u.s. intelligence showing increasing concern today that the nuclear threat is only part of the real threat that tehran maying embracing plots to attack american assets around the world. we have bruce with us. let's take it point by point, because we had all the intelligence officials testifying their semiannual

threat assessment to the senate intelligence committee today. first of all, iran and the nuclear threat and what israel may or may not be doing. what is your sense from everything that you have gleaned from officials about where israel is and why we are hearing so much noise from israel and forces about the polli ipossibi military action. >> i think that there are some that fear the window of opportunity to do something about iran's nuclear program is getting smaller and smaller and the time for action, if there's to be military action, is getting shorter and shorter. the u.s. intelligence committee's assessment argued that the real question in iran today is whether tehran has the political will to make a bomb. not whether it has the technical capability to do so. most of the technical capability is in place there already.

so it's a question of will and that puts more pressure on israel to make its mind up about what it's going to do about iran passing the nuclear threshold. >> and would israel, first of all, act without the united states? >> well, we have a long history, the israel military activities and in very, very few cases has israel come to the united states ahead of time and asked for permission to act. the number of cases where israel has decided to go on its own are much higher than that, against iraq in 1981 and against the palestinians this many occasions and against lebanon in 2006. we are close allies and they will listen to the united states. if they get a no don't do it, that is something that they would have to think about long and carefully. if they get anything else, i e israel will probably make its own decision and calculate that the united states will come

along afterwards. >> general petraious was asked what our red line is. >> if there's a decision to enrich beyond the 20% that they are currently enriching to, to the weapons grade, that would be very significant. there's no commercial use for that. argue ably, in fact not arguably, in fact the amount of 20% enriched uranium that they have exceeds any need for the reactor for the foreseeable future. >> which is making your point. that they now have the capability to do almost anything that they want. the leap from 20% enrichment to 90% enrichment is not a big deal technologically. israel and the u.s. most likely or some combination have covertly slowed them down.

we have seen five scientists assassinated and the computer virus, it seems from my reporting and you are saying, that israel is getting close to a decision that you cannot really accomplish that covertly and for the prime minister and for the defense minister, the former prime minister, this is a threat. the other thing that petraious said and senator feinstein said that they met with the leader, and they met with the ma saud leader, they are getting the direct line from israel that this thing is heating up >> the israel government is clearly very worried. but it's important to note that there's a heated debate within israel, there's former senior government officials, including the last three heads, have all said that they think military action against iran is a mistake and that it will be more counter

productive than productive. and that israel does not face a threat from the iranian nuclear problem, it faces a serious threat but israel has the means to protect itself. one of the things you the did not hear the american intelligence community talk about today because it never does is israel's nuclear deterrent which is quite formidable. >> even though there's debate, israel public opinion is divided 50/50, the fact is that the leaders are ina agreement on the harder line on this. one more thing, the retaliation that iran would take against the u.s., it u.s. assets and what was said today that iran will take action on u.s. soil, they are coming to that action, and

other plots were foiled and there could be attacks against u.s. interests in the united states? >> in fact, the united states is far more vulnerable than israel, israel is relatively small. getting at israel is hard to do and it has formidable defenses for it. america has assets and vulnerablities around the world. here at home, we saw an plot to set up a bomb in washington. in the middle east, through 90,000 american soldiers in afghanistan, immediately next to iran. iran could heat up the war in afghanistan quickly and make obama's war there very, very difficult to succeed in if it chose to counter an american israel attack on iran by going after our softer, vulnerable places. >> that is the scary part

in all important florida, president obama still has a big advantage over the republican feel in our latest poll, in head to head matchups he would defeat either romney or gingrich in florida. joining me now is stephanie

cutter, what is the strategy going forward as you see the republicans beating up on each other, this has certainly been sort of a happy couple of weeks for the white house. but eventually you'll have a nominee and whatever nominee, he will be well financed and we have seen that and he will be more seasoned. >> well, andrea, let me address a couple of those issues. you know, we do, and according to your own poll, have an advantage right there right now. and that is true because you know, we won there in 2008 and we never left the state. we continued having a presence in the state. we have over 11 offices all over that state. the president has spent the last three years talking about the issues that matter to the people on the ground there. you are right, that mitt romney does have a financial advantage in the race. i've been listening to your program over the last couple of minutes and lots of talk about

how much he is out spend newt gingrich. almost 5-1 and the most negative campaign ever. that will be a serious disadvantage for romney, if he returns to tampa and he is the general election nominee for their convention. one thing i was listening to romney's spokes person talk about, their view -- their primary strategy and the party needing to coalesce, one thing that republican voters need to keep in mind is the positions that romney is taking and the positions that keep changing. he said that he would not touch medicare and social security, does that mean he is walking away from the ryan budget that a couple months ago he endorsed. he said that he would not help any of the home owners that are underwater. 44% of home owners are underwater in florida through no fault of their own. these are positions that will

come back to haunt him in the general election. and that matters, as you know. >> there's no question that president obama has raised between, the president and dnc have raised more money than all the republicans already. so there will be plenty of money washing around. i want to ask you about the google interview that the president did, some say it's the new wave of campaigning. that he is out there and accessibility at the same type t -- same time the rnc is up saying he is not been as sympathetic to a woman that was in the high tech field. what are the risks and rewards of going on social need wmedia? >> the president has made a priority of going on social media to talk directly to the american people. it's something that he revolutionized during the 2008

his people are talking about the super tuesday states, that is a long way to wait. march 6 sgth that is a politica et eternity >> what about the lead coming out of florida. in any case, a win is a win, but what are the weak knows as he goes forward, the calendar favors him and money favors him, what about himself as a c candidate though? >> he has still not united the party. listen to radio talk aand consee activists. he needs to find a way, while he tries to ease newt gingrich out

of the race, he needs to get them on his side and he has not figured out a way to explain his taxes cleanly. gingrich is in a stronger position. when mitt romney is having to talk on record. >> the other point that his campaign manager is pointing out in a memo is that only between five and 10% of the dell fwegat will have been awarded after florida. >> the race is wide open for quite some time. it's not mapossible to be in control until april. i any that newt is not going to away from a fight. where can he make the argument with romney, there's one debate scheduled so far in february, on

the 22nd in arizona. that has been what has fueled his campaign from the start. these debates. where will he be able to engage and contrast himself with romney in the a way that recommend gets attention when romney is likely to win in the nevada caucuses on saturday and michigan and at the end of the month. the story line may move o i certainly agree with mark, one should not count this race over and newt gingrich out, quite yet. >> mark, i wanted to play a bit of joe biden talking about the bin laden raid, which is of course how the president opened and ended the state of the union. they feel it's a very important presidential decision moment. this was biden talking to the caucus over the weekend at their retreat. let's watch. >> every single person in that room hedged their bet except leon panetta. leon said go. everyone else said, 49, 51, this -- got to me, he said joe,

what do you think? and i said i didn't know we had so many economists around the table. we owe the man a direct answer, mr. president my suggestion is don't go. and he walked out and he said i'll give you my decision and next morning he came down and got in a he helicopter to go to michigan, i'm not positive of that and he turned and said go. >> mark that was classic joe biden, wasn't it? >> if you ask bo biden who is the best bed time story teller you have heard, he will say his dad. he is a great story teller. but look now doubt the president is proud of his national security record, it will be very hard for a republican to get to the right of the president in the general election on national security although they plan to try on israel and other issues but i think you'll see as mentioned in the state of the

on the spending. i don't know what the actual numbers are but it's three or five times what we have seen in the past. and it's a real problem in our politics. it's taken over -- i mean the money is pornographic in politics today and the problem is that we have very little disclosure. we don't know where the money is coming from and the money is unlimited. it's ridiculous that says candidates can be paying 25,000 tl and then you can go across the street and get the money from someone else. it's month wonder the american public is revolvted by what the have seen. >> you have started a super pac for the president and nobody believes that you are not

somehow connect. you are independent legally. but aren't you really as close to people in the white house as steven colbert is to john stewart? >> i don't know that i would use the word pornographic to describe what super pacs are in this process. i would say it's an imperfect system. unless karl rove and the coke brothers decide that they are not going to spend hundreds of millions dollars like they said and romney's private equity friends are not going to spend 10s of millions dollars that they are spending we do not think on the democrat side we should play by a different set of rules. >> steven colbert tried to make the point, of course of the so-called lack of of coordination saying they raised a million dollars and he wants that money back and this was the skit they put on last night. >>

>> well, the -- six months ago, given the economic fundamentals, i think there was speculation that it was going to be a blow out for republicans. but because of moves on the president's team, that it will be a close race. in a very close race, hispanic voters could really decide this race and in 2000, and 2004 in the bush campaigns we had a laser focus on hispanic voters, because we knew it was significant to get that portion to win. we got 41%, we quickly realized it was a growing demographic so if we maintained that share, we would lose, so we had to increase it and we did. to 44%. and i look at the numbers now and president obama is beating mitt romney by 68% to 30%. i don't know that republicans

can win unless they substantially, in a close race, increase that share. and i have been concerned for a while about the general messaging of the republican party as it's directed toward hispanics particularly on issues like immigration. >> and bill burton, i do not think you would disagree. we have to leave it there. up next the newest cabinet member. even ragu users chose pr. prego?! but i've been buying ragu for years. the most amazing things that can be created here. apple is not the only example and one of the things we know is that companies create more jobs after they open up. regulations that are streamlined for smaller companies that are going public, this relates to the on ramp for the companies. now, when they go public in the country, they will create some of the manufacturing and job creating operations here in the this country. so i would not say that apple is prime example. there are people in medical devices all kinds of of innova companies that create the new jobs. >> part of the white house programs include breaks for small businesses and capitol

gains breaks. that is ngoing to create the sharp contrast with mitt romney for the campaign ahead, doesn't it sound like things the republicans have been proposing? >> the president has been proposing it from day one, and he did 17 tax breaks already for small businesses and these are tax breaks that he has been promoting in the american jobs act. and for a period of time. and what he is saying, we are not waiting, we are doing a lot of things at the sba we had a record year of putting money into their hands and now it time for congress to do their part and pass this bill and the period said if it has been passed and it has bipartisan support right now in congress. he has put it all together and he said if they send him a bill, he will sign it now. >> thanks for making time for us
