campaign garrett who is following the romney campaign. i spoke with donald trump a short time ago. he would not tell me who he plans to endorse. he did mark the excitement in and around the location. >> i just finished talking to mr. trump myself. he was sort of loitering in the hallway talking about his endorsement of mr. romney. he expects lit be the biggest endorsement yet. he said it's been in the works for several weeks. they have been talking back and forth. he likes mr. romney's stamp on china. he said the performance in the last two debates kind of help seal the deal for him. >> he confirmed to you his decision? >> slabsolutely. he will be endorsing mr. romney. >> let me ask you about what

happened. late last night we got word there would be a big announcement. as the night progressed into early morning, the report was that he would endorse or was expected to endorse newt gingrich. a few hours later that went out the window. what was going on behind the scenes. were they negotiating with donald trump to get his endorsement? >> apparently not. coming from mr. trump's mouth, he said this is case of some confusion with the gingrich campaign. he said they thought they had this locked up. he said they were planning to endorse mitt romney. it's a story an endorsement to mr. newt gingrich leaked out. he said he tried to get ahold of mr. gingrich this morning but haven't been able to. >> all right. thank you very much. let me bring in michael

smerconi smerconish. thank you. michael, i'll start off with you because i know this is your favorite topic, donald trump. garrett says it's a done deal. we know he's endorsing mitt romney. >> i think this is the worst possible thing that could happen to the romney campaign today. >> why? >> the worth possible. the whole dialogue today is all about the comments where governor romney said he doesn't care about the poor and i don't want to take it out of context. everybody knows the full statement but on day when people are assessing what's his level of concern for those who have the least, he's going to stand up and claim the endorsement of the most notorious billionaire in the united states. i think this is ridiculous. i think it's bad advance work. he should have called him up and said the donald, can we put this off for 30 days. >> ron, what do you think of the

timing as michael brings up, as well as the value of this endorsement? >> i disagree with michael on both points. the timing, i don't get it. why donald trump? why no. this announcement is all about donald trump. it will take a bit of the air out of governor romney. i don't see how that adds to his credibility. that doesn't make sense to me. >> it also is strange when you look at the history of mitt romney and donald trump. we have what donald trump said in august regarding mitt romney. he said i wasn't in love with the job he did in massachusetts. he wasn't popular. he was a one-term governor. he didn't have a high approval rating and i don't like that. i like a guy running for president to be the most popular guy you can have. the romneycare is not a good situation. that's one of things. i want to play what he said on cnn in april regarding mitt

romney. let's play it. >> mitt romney is a small business guy. he buys companies, he closed companies. he get rid of jobs. i built a great company. >> how does he backtrack from those comments not so long ago about mitt romney, and how did rom stand next to the guy who said those words? >> i have no idea. there's very little value in this endorsement. i cannot conjure up in my mind the prototypical voter who will go in this direction because donald trump has made this recommendation or endorsement. >> ron, let me ask you as a republican, yesterday, when we brought up the comments that mitt romney made when he said he was not concerned about the very poor because there was safety nets in place. when we first brought this story up yesterday around this time, he was bombarded by people who

said we're takiing liberal talking points, by the end of the day the wall street journal, from conservative publications who were slamming mitt romney or criticizing him on that same remark that people tried to pawn off as a liberal talking point. >> there's no question it was a clumsy comment. i think we know what he meant to say. >> what did he mean? >> there was a safety net, medicaid, programs designed to help them. it comes across as being insensitive. you should care about all americans and say i'm going to be the president of all american citizens. that's what he could have said a lot more artfully. >> how long can people say it comes across as insensitives as posed to perhaps a part of this individual's fiber? i know that you in the past brought up when the president made the comments at fundraiser in california about people clinging to bibles and guns. folks have not let that go who

don't like this president. here we are with mitt romney and people are trying to massage, when you look at the $10,000 bet, when you look at not wanting to release the tax return, the money that's invested or placed in banks not in the united states, the i like firing people line. how many times can these words be dismissed as these are flubs and not the person's fiber or character? >> i've known him for several years now, and i know he is a person of great integrity but great empathy. he cares about people that are a lot less fortunate than he is. >> why does he keep messing up? >> sometimes folks get before the crameras and say things the wish they hasn't said. i think that was one of those flubs. >> being on tv can be stressful, but being the president of the united states, i think what i do for a living is chicken scratch.

over 24 hours when this story was reported, this went from people attacking the so-called mainstream media to conservatives going after mitt romney. i believe one headline said what's wrong with this guy. that was a conservative publication. >> i did read what you're referring to. if it was any other candidate or a one-time incident, it would be negliable. it furthers the narrative that this guy isn't like us. he's different and had a strong problem in connecting with folks. when you blend it together with the other examples that you offered, that's what it furthered. i'm sure the white house is delighted with this. >> rick santorum responded to this expected endorsement. he said he is -- this is the statement from -- he said he's a very interesting character.

i think all the campaigns know what whatever donald trump does it's not really for anybody else but donald trump. be careful what you wish for. that's what rick santorum said. you're nodding. >> he's right. >> i don't understand, ron. you seep it so clearly. michael sees it clearly. you're the republican here, why in an hour and a half will mitt romney be standing alongside donald trump, the guy who slammed him repeatedly and who you believe brings no value. i think they are convinced he does bring something. >> they have to. they have to think he will bring the business community along. i can't justify that one. i like him a lot. i like his staff. i don't see it. >> michael, how bad does this look for newt gingrich? he said this would be another rebel, maybe he'll get palin later fp now he is a rebel without a cause because he does

not have this endorsement. >> i think newt gingrich can rebound if he can garner the support of meatloaf or gary busye. >> thank you. president obama got personal about his faith at the annual national prayer value. mr. obama told the audience and bipartisan lawmakers about the lasting impact of his one-on-one meeting with bill li graham in 2010. >> i've fallen on my knees with great regularity since that moment asking god for guidance not just in my personal life and my christian walk, but in the life of this nation and in the values that hold us together and keep us strong. >> kristen welker is at the white house. in addition to the president's tone, a lot of people are talking about how the president

wove in faith and the economy and the need to help those most in need in this country. >> reporter: absolutely. it was interesting to hear the president get so personal and make the case that religion is very much at the root of a lot of his policies. he talked about economic fairness and taking the one step further. that makes you think about his plan to increase taxes on the wealthy. this is something a lot of his republican rivals have opposed. it's interesting because as you know, this president has been criticized by some people for really people whom have questioned his faith and in some ways he seemed to indirectly address some of that criticism both by talking about billy graham and talking about the evolution of his faith. here is a bit more of what he had to say. take a listen. >> i thought about my own spiritual journey, growing up in a household that wasn't particularly religion. going through my own period of

doubt and confusion. finding christ when i went even looking for him so many years ago. >> reporter: and, of course, this speech comes against the backdrop of an election year as i pointed out. there are some contrasts that the people will see in the president and his republican rivals, specifically president talking about fairness, talking about helping the poor. peopling saying that's different than what we heard yesterday from mitt romney on the campaign trail who made a gaffe when he said he wasn't concernedabout helping the poor because they have a safety net. mitt romney said his comments were taken out of context. but president today getting very personal and also a little bit of politics thrown in. a loot of people will see the speech and look at some of the contrasts that the president drew. >> thank you very much. up next, a shocking report reveals the number of suspected

welcome back the nbc news has confirmed the size of the government's no fly list has doubled in the that's year. it's jumped from 10,000 neen or suspected terrorists to around 20,000. those people are banned from flying to or within the united states. the reason being explained for this huge increase, the government lowered the standard for putting people on the list following the failed christmas 2009 bombing. joining me now eileen sullivan who first broke this story. thank you for joining me. >> thank you for having me. >> let's talk about this criteria that increased the number of people on the no fly list. what's changed? >> a lot has changed. used to be you had to be a

threat and now the bar has been lowered. if you're considered operationally capable meaning you been to a terrorist training camp. now these days you can be on the no fly list. >> is there competence in the accuracy of this list. we have heard of awkward situations in year past, children's names listed on there and a couple of lawmakers. how accurate is this list especially when you look at the new number of names on there? >> the government says it's very accurate. they attribute that to the government taking over the system for checking the names against the watch list. used to be the airlines would check it against the no fly list. now that the government does it, they say it's a lot more reliable. >> as i understand it in the reco reporting, 3% of those are americans. the aclu has sued on behalf of americans on the list. how does that relate to the

number of increase or the number of names on there? >> no one will tell you from the government whether you're on or off the list. you can petition to, if you feel you're being stopped unfairly at airport security, you can petition the didn't of homeland security and they will review your case. you'll never know unless you try to fly and it might not be clear. >> thank you for the information and your breaking story on all of this. i know when people see the number increase they want to know why. thank you so much. >> thank you. another highly partisan and heated hearing on capitol hill over the flawed operation that puts guns in the hands of mexican cartel. this was the sixth time testifying about the department's knowledge and response to fast and furious. it came to light after a border patrol agent last year. they threaten to hold the

attorney general in contempt of documents related to the program. >> there's 93,000 documents, 93,000 documents that you're not giving this committee. you're saying well, the separation of powers prohibit you from doing that. for you to deny it is just dead wrong. i would urge the chairman to move a contempt citation to you if you don't give them to us. >> i'm not sure where you get the number of 93,000 documents. the redactions is because there's nings that are protected. we have provided to this community material that is relevant. >> nbc news justice correspondent pete williams joins us. this is the sixth time the attorney general has testified at a hearing. we also know this issue has

become a political hot potato. many people have used this as a talking point against the attorney general. where is this going now? >> it seems to be moving along in a couple of ways. first of all, the focus of today's hearing was about documents and you heard a little exchange there, and the government has been given some more documents and said they would give even more. that hasn't satisfied the chairman. there's a certain amount of ritual interplay going on that you usually find in these things. that is moving along. where that's headed, it's hard to predict. the second line of questions today, tamron, was about why the attorney general hasn't fired anybody yet. he said he's waiting for the results of the inspector general finding to find out who was at fault. he said if he does find out who is responsible, that person would be fired.

here is the way he put that. >> to the extent we find out who was precisely involved, i can assure you unless there's some truly circumstance, those people will be removed from federal service. we're in the process of investigating that murder and the people who are responsible for it will be held accountable. i expect you will hear something about that soon. >> what has made this so controversial is not only the policy itself of allowing guns to be purchased by known or expected straw buyer and atf agents were instructed to watch as they were taken across the border and given to mexican drug cartel figures on the theory they could investigate the people would led it to them. they lost track of something like 2,000 of those guns. that's controversy a. controversy b is the fact some of the guns allowed to walk across the border was found at

the scene where the border patrol agent was killed. there's a new development along that, the family of terry has filed a wrongful death claim against the u.s. government saying the policy was flawed and it was the direct cause of his death. that'ses the first step toward if the family chooses to, if the government denies the claim, then they could sue the federal government. there's some new steps along the way there. >> thank you for those updates. we're following breaking news out of egypt where thousands of people are protesting after deadly violence following a soccer match. we'll tell you why the two vents are tied together. the battle over women's health rages on. donors outraged by susan g. komen's decision to se ver ties with planned parenthood.

they say it's received more than $400,000 in fewer than 24 hours from donors since the news both yesterday. the heads of planned parenthood and the komen foundation appeared. >> this was decided at the board level and by our mission. everything we get up and do is about the mission to provide women with care and screening. >> we were shocked and surprised that they decided to pull funding. more than 700,000 breast examines each year are provided by doctors and nurses at planned parenthood. >> joining me is barbara lee of california. thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> some of your colleague were on with my colleague, andrea mitchell expressing outrage by

the susan g. komen foundation. where do you stand on this? >> i'm shocked and dismayed. i can't believe this is happening. this is another battle in what i call the war on women. i think that they should go back to the drawing board and reconsider this decision. can you imagine withdrawing funding for breast screening exams. this is amounted to 170,000 women being able to have their exams like every woman who has means can do. these are low income women who need access to breast exams. i think it's really a shame and disgrace. i'm outraged. all women in the california democratic delegation wrote to the komen foundation and asked them to reconsider. >> we asked our audience, and we'll have the results later, if this move was brought on by politics. we posed this question because the new head or vice head of the

komen foundation is a former republican candidate governor for georgia. he strongly opposes abortion and vows to defund planned parenthood during her campaign. to be fair, the head of the komen foundation says this has nothing to do with politics. it's a new policy they have in place regarding organizations who are being investigated. what do you believe is truly at play here? we're 24 hours now into this story being a big headline. >> i believe their response is part of their public relations campaign because women and everyone around this country who care about women's health are in shock and are outraged. i think they're trying to figure out how to put the best face on this. that's not going to work. we know what planned parenthood provides. planned parent ho ened parentho family planning sfrss. they disease infection kind of screenings. they provide breast cancer

screenings. they provide referrals for mammograms. i think that we're going to see a huge backlash. i think that's coming. >> have you joined your colleagues, those of whom have signed this letter that is being sent to the komen foundation to reconsidering this decision? >> yes. as i said, the california delegation forwarded a letter to the komen foundation. all 17 of us signed that. we're asking for that to be reconsidered. i know members of our pro-choice caucus have asked for this. i think we'll see women in this country and people around the country, men and women, out raijed raij outraged by what has taken place. low-income women deserve breast cancer screening as well as referral to mammograms, not only those that have the money. >> it's great pleasure to have you won us. we appreciate you giving yours

time. thank you. >> thank you. we continue following developing news. we're an hour away from what donald trump is calling amajor announcement. sources confirm it's going to be mitt romney who he is endorsing. romney is still taking heat from conservatives over his quote, i'm not concerned about the very poor comment. one of his rivals, ron paul is defending romney. take a listen. >> not too long ago, he was taken out of context that he liked to fire pem, which was completely out of context. i don't think he could come in here and say i don't care about the poor people. >> joining me now, ron paul's campaign chairman, jesse benton. i know you can't speak directly for mr. paul.

you have people that have gone after romney for this flub. mr. paul being a little more forgiving there. what's behind that? >> we want to have an adult conversation on the issues. that's one thing that dr. paul is committed to. we don't need toe be going after people because of quotes taken out of context. we criticize governor romney for issues that america cares about. that's what we need to be talking about. we don't need toe be trying to take things out of context and pick and harp on that kind of stuff. everybody knows that governor romney is a gentleman. >> i want to talk about some of those other things. i would like you to explain why you believe the comments were taken out of context. we played them until their entirety. i point back to members of the republican party. your own party who seized this moment. many of them are not running for office, at this time. rush limbaugh being one of them. why do you believe the campaign was taken out of context?

>> well, cause we see it happen to our guy before too. we see it happen to republicans all the time. things are taken out context by the media. they are spun and it's good for selling newspapers and getting people to turn into cable television. what it's not good for is having a real debate on the issues. that's what we want here. dr. paul is offering a stark contrast. he talking about sound money, pro-american foreign policy. that's what we want to talk about. not this silly he said, she said. >> i don't think anybody would see that as a silly thing. i don't think that's what you're saying to keep it in context. some see between mr. paul and governor romney. it says for paul it's an tunts to gain a seat at the table if his long shot bid at the presidency fails. is there an alliance or is this

a story line someone has picked up here and made too much out of it? >> it's taken about two steps too far. what exists and what is in reality is governor romney is a gentleman and dr. paul and governor romney speak. they have a cordial relationship. when we talk and coordinate on some scheduling things and stuff like that when it makes sense for both campaigns. lines of communication are open. we are running to win this campaign. i would like to point out we have four tv commercials and a couple million of pieces in mail contrasting our records and pointing out his support for tarp bailouts. we're running to win, but like i said, governor romney is a gentleman and we talk. >> real quick. the article says romney's aids are quietly in touch with ron paul. is that true? >> i speak with his campaign staff maybe once a week or so to touch base on common scheduling items and things like that.

his staff is class acts. again, they are committed and we're committed to having an adult conversation on the issues. we think we're right on the issues and governor romney is wrong on a lot of issues. that's what we're going to focus on. >> thank you. greatly appreciate your time. thank you. >> thank you. thousands of protesters are clashing with police near tahrir square. security forces have tired tear gas at protesters near that famous square that min tri of health says more than 440 people have been injured from tear gas inhalation. this follows the deadly riot many are blaming on egyptian security forces. 74 people were killed in that incident. i saw your report earlier today on the "today show" where one of theories has to do with the

uprising in egypt this spring. >> reporter: absolutely. when you speak to many of those fans that are engaged in the clashes with police, the first thing they will tell you is there were police forces present. why did they not do more to stop the crowd from swarming the field, taking the players and killing 74 people. they believe there was some kind of approval, perhaps a sinister plot in which police and security forces were left to stand by and watch as these protesters attack the field. it's also part of the inquiry that parliament here has launched. the governor of the city has been sacked or fired and so to have to security officials. it gives you a sense that the government, the parliament and protesters are putting the blame on the security forces for not doing more. the situation in cairo remains tense. the protesters now in direct confrontation with police and security forces. they are trying to make their way to the ministry of interior.

back to you. this was tuesday night at 8:30. >> i get the impression you thought they were trying to stall you any way? >> i got the insere impression they were trying to be obstructive. this is where we had to weigh our options, are we going in no matter what or allow them to bully us out of these sessions? this has happened before. the democrats had no problem letting us in to tape all sorts of hearings. since the house changed, we've had a lot of flak trying to get in the door and been backed off. this is a very personal issue. >> when you were in the hearing, what did you hope to capture? i know you're working on a sequel to your explosionive, no pun intended, the drinking water coming from the faucet in people's homes, lights up on fire due to the drilling practices with natural gas.

it is stunning saddening, and sickening to watch this. you were working on a sequel. what did you hope to capture on tape? >> this was the republicans holding a hearing with the panel full of gas lobbyists on the science and technology committee to attack a three and a half year epa investigation, which we have been following very closely. the residents are featured. we have been following their story in gasland two. ep said fraking is likely the cause. they were forging an take on the science within the science committee. >> they were fundamentally attacking science here. this is not opinion, this is not theory. this is science. >> it's in their opening. it was a meticulous three and a

half year statement. they opened, as i was told, i was in jail. an attack on the epa. you have an investigator looking at the truth on the stand, epa being attacked and the journalist trying to report being hauled away in handcuffs. this is a brazen attack on civil liberty, science and freedom of the press and the families that have come forward and petitioned for the epa to come in and examine ground water contamination. it's clear what happened here. it's also very clear the shortsightedness of this approach. this has backfired on them just as the campaign for fraking has backfired. it contaminates ground water. you have a short term effect. throw this guy in jail. we see a long term effect of
