elect ability argument. that could hurt him. >> you have a number of articles on whether women will support rick santorum, politico is one of the sources out there showing perhaps a gender gap that we saw with newt gingrich as well. i believe it was in florida where women started to shift away. are we seeing that with rick santorum? >> he has a double edge here that he likes to talk about. he's able to connect a bit more on these blue collar values. he lived a pretty modest life. he's not as rich as these other guys are. still made a pretty good salary in the last couple of years. he's able to connect a little more on that. with women, you're right, i think if you're looking at a general election among independent, some of these comment whence swhences when ito

there was a type of se cue larism when it comes to the global warmist. it was referring to the president's policies in turm of the radical islamic policies has. >> you had foster friess say it was a joke. domineco said with limited infrastructure, if rick santorum is gone off message and his surrogates get him in deeper mess here, what are we to make here? >> i expect we're going to here more from alex stewart apologizing about those remarks. there will be controversy theoryist thinking it was a message she was trying to get out or on the mind of the santorum campaign when talking about president obama. i think there's a base in the republican party that this isn't going to bother. it might even work for. as you take a look at the more moderate republicans that either side needs to win, those

comments will alienate the middle and fire up the left. i think you'll see him trying to walk it back. >> chip, let me bring you in. politic politico points that rick santorum is losing women voters. in a head to head match up, he's getting 29% of women in national gop race. is he -- these comments going with upsetting women in your party? >> i think rick santorum did very well with women when he was senator and ran in his races. >> he lost 22%. he lost in 2006. >> he got blown out by 18 points. i was talking about his early races. he's become the front-runner. people are just starting to take a look, these are the comments they are seeing and he's not great. i know alex stewart a long time. she's great. she does a wonderful job.

he says the romney campaign contacted him and he's assisting in michigan. many people thought it was a one-hit wonder. we would not see donald trump and mitt romney again. now he's acting as surrogate. what do you make. donald trump says the democrats are salivating for him to get this nomination. >> how is it that i had to send donald trump into michigan to try to save my bacon. look, i'm one of those people who think mitt romney will be the nominee, and i think he's got a pretty good shot at saving himself and pulling out a win in michigan next week. the fact that it's even a question and the fact that he's losing in the polls right now to a guy like rick santorum, who is

emboding all that is extreme about the republican party says so much about mitt romney's shortcomings as a candidate. he's got to do something pretty soon to make people feel good about himself because all he's been doing so far throughout this campaign is throwing a lot of money at making people feel worse about the other guy. he's got no shot with independents if he makes the general election. >> chip, let me bring you in with bringing in your heavy hitter in your home state is donald trump. what do you make of this move by mitt romney? >> he has a star appeal. he'll get big crowds and people in the media like us will cover it. more importantly, we had chuck norris a few years ago. he was our big hitter.

four years ago we thought we had a shot at taking on mitt romney in michigan. this is not the most uncommon thing in the world. does mitt romney have a lot of work to do? you bet. i think at tehe end of the day he's going to do that. i think we saw a poll showing him inching up. he's got to hit it home and stay positive. >> ann, i want to get you back in on the idea that women may be turned off by what they're hearing from rick santorum, even republican women. do you believe there's some traction with this story line? >> well, there could be. i think that chip's right. people who are just tuning in now are seeing these comments. i think the santorum campaign will have to work very hard to redefine itself rapidly in the eyes om women, men, moderate republicans heading into the michigan primary. >> thank you so much. great having you on. hope to see you soon. more on the breaking news we

told you about. the white house says president obama will meet with benjamin netanyahu in washington. the visit is expected on march 5th. this comes after an intense war of words. stephanie, obviously this is big news hearing of this trip and knowing the united states and britain trying to pressure israel not to attack iran. >> reporter: that's right. there have been some word oefrs the last couple of days putting the pressure on israeli leaders. you had the chief of staff saying an attack would destabilize the area. sanctions and diplomatic pressure need be given an opportunity to work. he also said that a nuclear iran

could spark an arms race in this part of the world, a very dangerous arms race. that goes a bit towards what's happening in tehran. they are there. they are hoping to meet with nuclear scientists. they are hoping to go to some nuclear facilities and set up future meetings and future schedule for themselves. how much of that is going to be done? there's a lot of skeptics on the progress. it is some diplomatic movement in iran. >> thank you. stephanie gosk. joining me now is jim. you're your reaction. >> i think it's a huge development. i think iran will be topic number one where they will discuss the likelihood of an attack or the possibility of an attack. i think the thing that gets loss is that discussion of an attack

now to the avalanches in washington state that took the lives of four people. the worst of the two avalanches swept skiers thousands of feet down a mountain slide. that's right outside the pretty popular. it's how one woman survived. she was wearing a special avenue launch safety device earlier on tod today. she described how it saved her life. >> it's not liking a snowy ride. it feels like you're in washing machine and you're being flipped and tumbled. >> what is the latest on what could have caused the bigger of

these avalanches? >> well, it was a skier, one of those skiers that headed out into the back country that triggered the avalanche. there's were a dozen skiers. there wasn't a high risk of avalanche, but as the day went on that happened. in parts of the west this is the biggest avalanche threat they have seen in 30 years. a very dangerous situation in some places because there hasn't been a lot of snow in some places this year. when you get on top of it, it can trigger the avalanches. many of the skiers were able to sk dig out. there were three men that were unable to. their friends did dig them occuout. they did cpr, but they were delayed dead on the mountain. critics say rick santorum's

specifically a question who's posed today by the philadelphia columnist, john bayer. how did we get to where we are with rick santorum? that was his question. to talk about it is columnist john bayer. he's live on the phone. >> thanks for having me. >> here is a thought for president's day, did you just shiver. that's your start. some might say what's your beef? >> pennsylvanians know rick santorum well. a lot of pennsylvanians are asking that question. what is the deal. why do they appear to be willing to nominate someone when he was in the senate, the number three man in the senate lost him home stalt by 17.4%, a blow out. the largest loss of any

incumbent republican. now he seems to be positioned to win the nomination of his party for president. i think a lot of pennsylvanians don't get it. >> you say you wrote him off after his strong showing in iowa. you wrote him off after iowa, but he kept going. >> i did write him off. the reason i did at that time is now that national media will take a closer look. that didn't happen. with the sub kwent primaries he finished no better than third. suddenly he was back in the game. now, i think finally, people are starting to listen to what he says. when you listen, you get things like talking about prenatal testing or abortion and contraception or something's phony theology.

these are not issues i believe a majority of the mirn people want to focus a presidential campaign on. they might be great issues for university chap or sunday forum at your local church. they are not the issues that are driving the voting public. i think the party is in a bad place to assume they are. >> you have people that turn out to these rallies and they say rick santorum is the every man. they believe he is relatable. they relate to the direction he would like to see this country go. perhaps not on every issue as in the ban of contraceptions even though he said he would never vote for anything like that. there has to be something more than anybody but mitt romney stating exactly that the things that you've named that have recently been heavily discussed regarding rick santorum and his views. >> there's no question. i've been surprised by the fact that he hasn't cashed in more on

his own background. he talks about his grandfather working in the coal mines. he talks about his humble beginnings. he's not an every man anymore since he left the united states senate. he's made an awful lot of money working for companies and industries that benefit from thing he is sponsored when in the senate. everywhere you look you see reasons to challenge the sort of every man approach. people forget, he's very involved in the cay street project, the lobbying project that spent jack abram off to prison. there's a whole history about rick santorum that hasn't gotten a full blown look. i think when it does, the party will have to look elsewhere. >> thank you for coming on. more now on whether women will vote for rick santorum in the face of a series of recent comments. those include standing by his opposition to contraception and suggesting women in the military

areas in which rick santorum is on the wrong side of the vast majority of women, republican, democrat, independent, doesn't matter. >> former pennsylvania representative who is a republican is quoted in this piece where you're featured and she says regarding his strong message on jobs that will win women voters back on track. things in there that can be of concern for working women and working mothers. she insists the economy and his message about the economy that will rule the day. he's being painted as a culture warrior and he may be enjoying that title. >> if your idea of putting men back to work is sending women home because they have to home school their kids because there are no public schools, i suppose that could be a jobs program. it's a pretty extreme one.

academy by race and gender. it finds the academy is much more diverse than the oscar viewing audience. joining me now is nicole, film writer for the l.a. times. it's not just about the idea of there being limited diversity. it's about who these people are. many of them are not the makes you think would be judging such an important event for hollywood. >> we have the academy luminaries like clint eastwood. we have eric estrada from "chips" and quite a few other sbr celebrities. you get your membership and you keep it for life. when someone was first allowed,
