now you can see some of the students being allowed to leave and released to their terrified parents. >> absolutely scared out of my mind. it's very difficult thing to know that you can't be there to help them in a time like that. i just want him back. i just -- i'm not going to -- i'm not going to be able to calm down unless i actually get to hold him. >> all of our high school students are now safe. the person who -- the alleged person who did the damage is in custody and the students are being evacuated from the high school to maple elementary school. >> again, that was a superintendent and those students were evacuated. they were taken across the street. there's an elementary school literally right across the street from there. and there you can see that many of the parents had gotten there at a point when they were still looking for the gunman.

but, again, that shooter is in custody right now and reportedly was taken just down the road to the county sheriff's department. msnbc journalist joins me now. one of the first things that these officers are going to be asking this kid, if it is indeed a stoopudent, we don't know tha for sure. >> reporter: yeah, it appears the initial reports suggests that in the cafeteria this morning, between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m., that someone, a male described as a student, stood up with a weapon and started firing. there's also reports that the same gunman was seen chasing the student down the hall. if that's the case, chris, that may suggest that there were specific individuals targeted. so notwithstanding, we've got four injuries. we've got three male students and a female student injured. we've got one shooting and suspect in custody.

this harkens back for all of us to columbine in 1989, that first terrible tragedy. and for law enforcement, notwithstanding, they're trying to find out who did this. what the motive is. there are suggestions that this has been tweeted, in essence, there was some type of internet message put out that something was going to happen today. that may suggest that the cataly catalyst might have been something over the weekend. these are things that law enforcement are trying to put together. was there an accomplice, was anybody else involved? this is a real fast-breaking, on going investigation. even though there's one person in custody, there's a lot of questions to be answered and of course the safety and security of the student who is have been injured. >> yeah, and obviously we are sill waiting to hear what their conditions are. some official word on that. you can just imagine the shock

waves that have gone through this community. a high school with less than 300 seniors. we have a number of different investigative groups there, obviously. you have the local police, the county sheriffs, but the f.b.i. was brought in very quickly. what will their role be? >> the. >> reporter: the r.b.i. can mobilize a s.w.a.t. team very quickly. and, again, this takes us back to columbine. at the time of columbine, the law enforcement response was to surround the building, take your time and try to talk people out. columbine taught us a terrible lesson. that lesson is you have to get into the school, you have to find the shooter or shooters and stop them before anyone else is injured. now, the f.b.i., atf will try to run down the or weapons used. we'll be looking at his come putteders, talking to his family members, his friends.
10:04 am
there's a lot to put together, chris, as law enforcement, one more time, tries to deal with the tragedy of what should be the safest place for our children once we get them in school, one more time has turned out to be a very dangerous lace. >> what kinds of questions are you asking this suspect right now, clint, if you're in that room? >> reporter: well, we want to know, for example, what his motive was? where he got the weapon, how long he had planned this, did anyone else participate in the planning, who has he told that he was going to do something like this, were there specific people that he was targeting, how long has he planned this, is he aware of anyone else who was planning a similar type of activity. we've got two different types of information; chris. we have to get urgent information. we've seen school shootings where the shooter has been a student and has shot one of their own parents or someone else at a location away from the
10:05 am
school. so we have to make sure there aren't other victims somewhere else. we have to get that immediate tactical information that can save lives. and then we're going to be trying to develop the strategic information about how long has this been going on, who else may have been involved and who else may be planning to do something like this in the future. >> as you mention columbine and there have been other big high profile things that have happened at schools, places like virginia tech. take us there the mind -- is there something -- is there a thread that runs through the shooters in these school incidents? >> i think there is, chris, you know, i was at virginia tech for a week covering this story for you and msnbc and nbc. and i've been to the location about the school shootings. i've talked to dozens and dozens of high school and college officials who handle these things. and many times it turns out to be the student himself or

herself is usually a loaner, someone who has got on going social issues, social challenges. we've got to be very careful not to paint anybody in the corner because we've seen students who have been terrible academically and we've seen students who have been very bright academically who have still been shooters in these situations. but what we always find, chris, is that there's what a profiler would call "psychological leakage." there's been some message. there's been some threat that's been conveyed to those around the shooter. and, un23fortunately, just liken incident of workplace violence, people don't know the signs to look for or they disregard them or they ignore them. when they see a tweet or a message on social media, many times they disregard it. well, that's just a young adolescent and he or she is just venting. we can't take that for granted, chris. any time there's a social media
10:07 am
message that suggests a threat to other people, we have foe, as parents, as care givers in the school and as law enforcement, we have to find the person responsible for that and find out out just what they meant be it. many times we can head off a situation like this if we're quick enough to identify it obviously before it happens. >> point well taken. i spent a lot of time at columbine several weeks after the shooting. there were a lot of people who were involved in that shooting who have been very active in trying to make sure that there's an awareness and that people know the signs. on the other hand, i'm thinking to myself, clint, you know, anybody who has a child who's a teenager, how many thousands of texts, how many thousands of tweets does any one kid put out in a week? the idea that there would be threatsly is not that shocking. and i guess you have to take -- is what you're saying take every single one seriously.
10:08 am
>> reporter: you have to take every one seriously vanillate although as a parent, we can't necessarily review every message that our child sends out. we need to have an on going relationship with our children. they need to understand that if they see a threatening message, they need to hopefully come to their parents, who they trust, share that message and then between the parent and the child, make a decision. do we go to the school, do we go to law enforcement. chris, just last week i saw a message that had been put together by a sixth grader that was threatening in nature. the people who brought it to me said, well, we're kind of dismissing it. i said you cannot dismiss something like this at all. we've seen people that young still get their hands on weapons and carry out acts. unfortunately, chris, we've got 310 million americans. we've got about 290,000 firearms. so if someone wants to get their

hands on a gun, they can get their hands on a gun. and in a situation like this, they bring it into the wrong environment and where normally you would see teenagers act out in words or maybe a shoving contest, it appears that at least one or more persons used a firearm to do their shoving. >> clint, if you could standby. i want to bring in heather phillips. she's on the phone. good morning to you. what can you tell us? how many student haves been brought to the clinic. >> reporter: good morning. we have two of the students from the shooting here at hillcrest hospital. and we have one male and one female. and, at this point, that's all that we have to share on either of them. >> can you tell us at all if their injuries are life threatening? >> at this point, you know, they're still being, you know, we've got them under observation. they're being reviewed right now and so we'll have more information a little bit later.
10:10 am
>> can you tell us if their parents are there? do they have family that have been able to make their way to the hospital? >> yes, we have family with both of them. >> are they in the emergency room? they're still in the evaluation stages? >> i don't know that at this point. it's all happening very quickly. so they are moving as quickly as possible throughout the care here at the hospital. >> and you're pretty close to the school, aren't you? >> reporter: we are. >> a couple of miles, maybe? >> reporter: yeah, it's several miles away. >> well, heather phillips from the cleveland clinic confirming two students who have been brought in. one male, one female. a lot of information we're getting is coming from the students themselves, students' parent parents who got the information from their kids. and the initial report was that there were three males and one female. but this is the first time we've gotten any confirmation of

big of a school. they only graduate at 127 students last year. so by most standards, especially by a big-city standard, this is a relatively small school. by enlarge, everyone is going to know everyone. i think the point is important that if someone brings a gun to school, number one, that suggests perhaps planning on their part. and it took place so early in the morning, between 7:30, 7:45. it's hard to imagine that someone would have just happened to have a gun with them and there would have been an incident serious enough to provoke them to pull that gun. so it looks like it may have been something on going. who knows, chris. it could be a boyfriend/girlfriend thing. it could be some altercation that took place over the weekend. but i would strongly suggest that for the student to have brought the gun there this morning, that there's been some prior incidents, you know, many
10:13 am
times we hear incidents of bullying, for example, that law enforcement is going to have to find out what provoked this. and for that student to bring the gun first thing in the morning, he apparently planned foe car to carry out this act. if he was chasing someone down the hall, it seems like he had a specific target. law enforcement are going to have to not only interslew all of the kids there, but their survivors and potential targets try to understand. there is no reason -- you and i can never find a reason that someone would bring a gun to school and shoot another student. but in the mind of somebody eveni young, when they feel that for whatever the reason they have no other choice to do this, they do it. this speaks of our education system where we need to start would recollecting with stude w students in grade school. >> without a doubt. thank you. you're going to stay with us, i

10:38 am
of course, if you're shot, you could try to get yourself out of that same area, too. but it appears that for whatever the reason, chased out by a teacher or whatever, the student exited was running, walking from the area and, again, really didn't have a plan, it appears, what he was going to do afterwards. and was either apprehended by law enforcement or turned hirms in. but, of course, this chaos is still on going and it is going to be on going for a while until law enforcement ensures itself that they can account for all of the activities, all the vac tims and all of the conspirators. >> let's talk about this report that he had somehow tweeted that something was going to happen at this school today. let me ask you, generically, rather than specifically since we don't have that tweet nor do we have it absolutely confirmed, about the warning signs, clint.
