they have in previous years as of yet, do you think the president can count on the blue collar vote? >> i think it's the change that we have seen, when you look at mitt romney's problems and the structural change of the mid woe west, it looked like a problem for the president, but it does not look that way. but there's still a problem with him connecting on a cultural level with some of the voters, but you know, i think that when it comes to if it's a -- it's a one issue referendum and it's the auto bailout, that is a trump card. >> you look at -- >> 62% of michigan residents support this. >> 42% of republicans. >> and 42% of republicans. >> you look at the event he just had, moments ago, cheering audiences, campaigner in chief is back. he is connecting, the shouts

from the audience, you are mitt romney and look where you are at in michigan and the comments about the trees being the right height and so on and so forth -- >> the republicans will not take this state in november. which is pretty important and what is also important, chuck has been following this, is the "reagan democrats" are coming back to the democratic party and that is important. part of that has to do with the over reach we have seen in states like wisconsin, and ohio, where you may see a govern, govern scott walker recalled because millions people do not like how he is bashing workers in a tough economy. >> not to be the debbie downer, you are correct, game on, the jury is still out as to whether or not he will win re-election or not because the economy is still the number one issue, unemployment is still at record levels. you are correct, the last republican to win michigan was george h.w.bush and there's a good point that the president

will probably win again. but can he win florida and ohio ? we don't know yet. >> let's bring in rick santorum. santorum is out there sort of with robocalls, his campaign has funded the calls trying get democrats out and -- in an effort to shore up his support in michigan, mitt romney's campaign has come out and said these are dirt tricks. let's play sound from the romney camp on the santorum robocalls. >> i think republicans have to recognize there's a real effort to kidnap our primary process and if we want republicans to nominate the republican who takes on barack obama, i need republicans to get out and vote and say no to the dirty tricks of a desperate campaign. >> say no to the dirty tricks of a desperate campaign. steve, where does that fall? this, again, of course is mitt romney he of the super pac ad

that trashed gingrich all over florida. >> it has echos of what george w. bush did against mccain. mccain won michigan because he went out and got democratic votes. it's a dispartity how bush and mccain did and this. bush walked away and said i won in the michigan primary, because it was mischiefous. what is interesting to me, santorum's message, it's something that republicans may want to think about. he is playing on kplclass ident, mitt romney's 1% image has brought independent voters support down to a new lows. is he well under 40%, that is a

serious problem. santorum is running on the same economic message but his identity and roots are middle class. if question for the republicans is, if you have a top 1% message, do you want a bottom 99% messager? >> don't you think the santorum has lost the support of the social conservativconservativis? the talks about snobs, you were talking about the playing to the class resentment. okay, do that, but when you talk about higher education as something for snobs, i think you lose a lot of people who believe in the american dream and education tied up with that in the mobility of education for millions. >> if there's a wasted opportunity, santorum may win tonight and this could be the best thing that happens to his career. if there's a wasted opportunity for him and a warning design going forward is this, the opportunity to be the middle

class candidate has been there for him, because he got side tracked in the social issues, how many conservative republicans came to santorum's camp in the last two weeks. i can think of dewine and the congressman from alabama. >> don't you think the question is, what type of the blue collar republican is raiesonating with santorum. now, having said that, we have to remember, he is speaking to a very conservative primary base right now. that message does not resonate in the general election, but to your point, i guess to address your point, i'm not sure that santorum is think background th -- think backgrouing about that, ik background the nra voter that may vote for him. >> i was talking to a veteran republican consultant and he said the most active chapter of right to life is in the state of michigan.

nra has been strong in both primaries but michigan is the place where white working class voters vote their pocket book in november. but in primaries they respond to the culture arguments. >> yet, chuck, mitt romney has gone on record, calling union leaders stooges and getting some part of the blue collar vote. >> i do not understand, when you have highs of union membership has voted 40% republican in some elections. i think there's -- it goes to katrina's point. the anger at public sector unions verses the trade unions has bled over and fired up i think some of the trade unions in a way that -- >> that we have not seen. >> president obama has never been the labor guy and people forget it. >> and his coalition -- >> he has not been that and all of a sudden they have drawn him

and then over the weekend. there was a weird sense yesterday in which he might have been stabilizing and the ppp polls overnight indicate that he may be regaining some momentum. and, you know, there's one or two other data factors. i think the sense that i got at mitt romney's event last night talking to some of his advisers and some of his aides was a little bit of unease, and i'm also hearing that there's a lot of e-mail going out and state republican officials, folks like sual, a former state party chair, really appreciapressurin state operatives saying let's get out the vote and make sure it's maximized. there's hints of anxiety on the romney side of how it will turn out. >> john, in terms of voters,

there's been so much back and forth, you said that santorum may have the big momentum. he has spent a lot of time with the social issues. on the ground in michigan, how much were people paying attention to the snobbery and wanting to send your kids to four-year colleges and so forth. >> there's maybe a couple of levels of folks that pay attention to that. the core activist base of the party, you know, goes online and reads through and parses and understanding, you know, basically the message that santorum is trying delivery to them, and a lot of them agree with it. the people it's a problem for are those that are reading the headlines and paying attention and getting their information that way. so, i think it's maybe not a huge problem for the primary but something he will have to confront in the general, that said, it's not going help him

with a large section of the primary voter population. we are just not sure how big that population is, i think. sgli sglipt -- i'm curious what chuck thinks. >> as am i. it's a tricky electorate, it's possible to win the popular vote. >> it's win or take all by congressional district and most of the delegates are distributed that way. 28 of the 30 will be distributed that way and two will be split statewide. you have to get 15%, but we know that santorum and romney will be the top two. it's frankly likely that santorum, romney's strength is around the suburbs, and places where he grew up, where santorum will do well is in the basically the rest of the state. you would assume -- but that is not the story tonight. the story is win or lose in that

popular vote. you know, this is santorum, this is about mitt romney. you cannot close the deal the horrible way that santorum has finished, it is -- you know, i don't think that we can over state the importance of this. it will be like a bomb went off inside the republican party establishment if romney blows this. do we see a new candidate? i doubt it because you wonder if the well is too poisoned, but i don't know if romney is the nominee. i really don't think we know. >> do you think that santorum will be let to be the nominee? >> who is let them? you have donor that are going rethink their money that they send to romney. they will have to feed the donors some sort of head. they will to quote, fire somebody, do something to

flamess give me time folks. romney has to win tonight and we saw signs with romney back track ago -- tracking a bit. the campaign is hedging its bets, let's listen to what romney has been saying. >> about two weeks ago, i was down 15 points in michigan and right now it looks like it's too close to call. i don't think that the pollsters know what will happen and i don't think that we can be 100% sure. but the fact that we have made up 15 points in two weeks is extraordinary. >> meanwhile, rick santorum is hedging his bets in his own way, obviously the pressure is not as great. he said yet, when asked about winning michigan, i don't even have dreams about that. the fact that we are in this like we are is a win for us already. robert, let's talk about mitt romney hedging his bets. is there anything that he can do at this point that will mitigate a loss tomorrow? >> no, no, the only thing he can do is wait and see.

i want go back to what chuck said, do you think there's a high probability of a contested convention in tampa? >> it not get that far simply because of the calendar. we have looked at it a million different ways. if you do it, and somebody else gets in, what you have to do is get a beach head of delegates. march 23rd is the biggest filing deadline. that's california, new jersey, and texas where filing deadlines have not passed. you go to the state conventions, go do it that way. you get a beach head of 700 or 800 delegate and you say have to cut a deal with santorum. it means kristi santorum. >> but honestly -- >> is anybody going to do anything unless romney pulls out of the race. >> mitt romney has been running for seven years, he will not get out easily. >> and i think it may ab romney santorum ticket. here is why.

santorum cannot win the state of pennsylvania. no question he cannot win the state. what he brings is socially to the table. that is what mitt romney needs right now. he needs somebody to close did deal, like sarah palin, not in the context of intellect and so forth, but what i'm talking about is the lack of passion that romney does not bring to the table. >> do you understand how extreme he is? he rejects the separation of church and state. satan is going to attack us, and higher four year community colleges are damaging to america. >> i do not buy that santorum has passion, what the passion is against romney here. it would bring more passion from the right on the ticket than santorum. >> as author -- he is authenti. thank you to chuck todd, don't

b there are thousands of people that resonate to that message and thousands more people, and maybe millions more -- >> and you are betsing that the people of michigan are those people that it raise nates well. steve kornacki, where do you go? >> three bets, the votes that are cast today, santorum wins, convincingly. but early voting favored romney, so i'm going say you factor in the early voting, and mitt romney gets a small victory. but my third bet, totally impossible to prove, but the win for mitt romney does not matter. we go into next week and everyone said he safed his campaign tonight, but he loses georgia and tennessee and oklahoma and he loses ohio next week. >> you have anything katrina? >> i don't bet. >> but she just stole my money.

times" today saying first they went after the rockefellor republican but i was not one, and then they went after the mainstream conservatives and there was no one left to speak for me. this is strong rhetoric from david brooks. >> their people like jennifer rubin, who was in the last week talking about rick santorum as an extremist reactionary, not a conservative. there's a need for a powerful conservative strand but rick santorum is bringing into the mainstream of this republican primary ideas that are truly fringe. i mean, when you listen to him talk about president kennedy's important hallooed 1960s speech on the separation of church and state, one of the great chi achievements of this country. and he says it makes him sick.

the way they think of their lives is different. they do not say, why do i care who you marry? this dog whistle politics does not appeal to them. the republican party, i guess i put it back to you, and i do not mean to make you speak for them, that is the way of the world, that is the way the country is going, i see a smaller and smaller group of people clinging and holding on to a 1950s re reality that is gone, and not accept thanksgiving you have to change -- accepting that you have to change with the times. >> i'm black, i'm gay and i'm out. for someone -- >> and what seat do you have at the republican party table? >> for someone to look like me and or not look like me and speak for me is uncomfortable.

for people like me who do not believe some of the things that our party leaders say, the only thing we can do is continue to speak out and say, with all do respect, you had your time, and thus in the process we will change. the question is, i do not live in michigan, arizona, tennessee or georgia,vy to respect the fact that people that do not look like me are voting in these primaries and thus in the process they are voting for -- or at least the polls suggest they are votesing for someone like santorum. i do like it? no, but i have to respect that there are individuals that are more conservative than i am on this issue. >> fears and anxiety of a country they no longer recognize are slipping away. >> rather than trying to -- the question is, robert, how long do you stay seated at that table?

one student is dead and another has been declared brain dead after a 17-year-old opened fire yesterday at a high school in ohio. nearly five years ago, a shooting spree at virginia tech claimed 32 victims, colin goddard survived four gun shots that day, he is part of a new documentary called living for 32. >> i was one of a group of students that survived. people tell me that god was looking after me that day. that is why i'm here. i just got lucky. >> here with us is colin, thanks

the virginia tech shooting, the virginia governor has considered signing a bill that would allow people to purchase more than one gun at a time. does it surprise you that the bar may be moving backwards? >> it's frustrating, but i'm not the only person frustrated. it's just a mess. people agree with that. our focus is to mobilize the american people t ones who are literally being killed, burying their neighbors and plofed ones and the ones that have to confront the issue on a daily basis. >> according to the brady center, today, there were -- sorry, thus far this year, 15,799 people were shot this year and 139 people shot today. these are staggering statistics. i want to open it up to the panel. we talk about the political
