immediately. tornado warnings or watchings have been is upped in eight different states. this follows dozens of deadly twisters that slammed the region two days ago killing 13 people. more than 100 others were injured. what's the latest, bill? >> 81 degrees in memphis right now. it shouldn't be that warm. it's 40 in st. louis. that's where the cold air is rushing in behind. we've already been doing it about the last three hours. a little earlier than expected in northern alabama and around the athens area. let's look at some of the video. this is from the storm that went through athens, alabama. it struck three different parts of the city. 9,000 people still without power. this is unfortunately the same area that was hit last april from the horrendous tornado out breaks. the same location will be

reporting damage. that's that storm. we also had another one just outside northern portions of mississippi. we're continuing to watch the situation. so far 12 reports of tornadoes out there. notice the ones in northern alabama, northern georgia. notice around st. louis, a huge hailstorm went through. what are we going to deal with next? we're waiting to see the main show. that will be between 4:00 and 8:00 this evening. that includes southern areas of ohio and down into tennessee including nashville. from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that's the area for the long strach arm. close enough. let me zoom in to show where the tornado warning is. this is the area to the north. anyone in southern portions och illinois right now you need to be getting into your safe room

with your family. need to get into your basement or bathtub. the storm is headed right over you. very intense the just barely missing harrisburg which is just to the north of there. this happens about four or five times a year. a high risk of tornadoes. the area in red is under a moderate risk, but it's the white area which is a high risk of tornadoes. if you're in in location you need have safety plan in place right now for this afternoon and evening. it includes all of cities on this map. the biggest cities on that map. that's what we will be watching as we go throughout the afternoon. it's not waiting until the storms get there. the storms coming right now on the ohio river, all ready producing tornadoes. >> help us understand why are we seeing the severe tornadoes, this tornadic activity in the winter. we're expecting these in the spring. >> if you paid attention to this winter, there's no snow on the

ground. it's been usually warm. we don't have the snow pack on the the ground. winds are at 40 miles per hour in memphis. all that warm air from the south is heading north ward. look at the temperatures. right now in louisville, kentucky it's 73. look at kansas city on the backside. 36 degrees. that cold air is rushing in behind. it's just a classic set up for a big huge tornado out break. these temperatures are so warm. that's the energy for these storms. it's going to be quite an afternoon and advantage. it's very rare to get the high risks without fatalities. that's what we're hoping for, but it's very rare. it's going to be dangerous night. >> let me bring in mike bettis. he joins us where schools are ending class early. bill says this is a long night for people in that area. >> it's definitely going to be.

we're looking for that key area between 4:00 and 8:00 this evening. it's home to over four million people. we had the nashville flood a couple of years ago. we had three tornadoes came through downtown nashville. it's the first time in 20 years that major area had been hit. you can see the skyline there. there's an orange structure here with a wavy roof line to it. that's the brand new convention center that ri building. it's a huge structure. it's still under construction. the south facing walling of that have not been completely built. if wind gets under that, entire structure could go. it's very warm right now, very unstable air. temperatures are in the 70s right now. they are 20 degrees above average. they are letting out schools early. that's good. if you are at home, nowhere in

unemployment is way high in that state. it's a very, very conservative, socially conservative state. i was in ash wednesday service, and from the pulpit, thaip said during the prayers of the people, we have to pray for the attack by h.h.s. on our religious freedom. this isn't a college town. it's a conservative state, but unemployment numbers are high. santorum, i think at the end of the day, despite his shrillness and anger, i still think he's going to carry that state unless he imploeds between now and then. >> looks like santorum country. 79% of the people make less than $100,000. 27% did not go to college. mitt romney has been taking to people who make over $100,000. you look at the makeup of this state, 79% making less than

$100,000, what do you make of those numbers and how they fit into the profile? >> i think it's good news because it took place after february 28th. it show a slight bauns for romney out of michigan, but still santorum a working margin. he still has an opportunity there. i agree with jimmy's analysis. if you look at mitt romney's victories the, he consistently wins voters may recollecting over $100,000 a year, and loses those making less than that. make you can win a republican primary winning only voters making over $100,000 a year, but when we start bringing in inspe independents and democrats, if you can't win middle class americans, you're not winning a general election. >> rick santorum talked about religion and we know the criticism of j.f.k., do you think he will play the game differently. chris matthews made an excellent

point in that he lost michigan on his own with what he said and the way he handled himself in the interviews and not talking about the economy. do you think he will play a different game the next few days? >> absolutely. i think chris matthews is correct. i think he did surrender the high ground and talk about what his di tractors want to talk about and didn't turn the subject around to what should have worked for him. look at kent countimy. that hosts grand rapids, the second largest city in michigan. that's home to some of the most christian conservative county. he barely won kent county. he lost michigan more than mitt romney won it. >> the good old boy network. the party voted late yesterday

to give mitt romney 16-14 edge with the delegates there. he says it's dirty politics again. >> sounds like rick santorum's forgotten what happened to the building behind me where he served for two terms in the united states senate. i agree with rick santorum. that's a terrible way of going about doing business. the guy went there. he ran. he almost beat him. by the way, chris matthews is right. he lost that state by himself, by his actions. at the end of the day, let's be clear, if the goal posts are changed after you leave the field, then there's a problem there. is that going to happen in ohio? is that going to happen in utah, california, idaho? i can guarantee you that the tea party and christian conservatives will not tolerate that kind of action by the party elders. >> there's been a lot of craziness in iowa. steve, your home state. you had some votes not counted a a lot of what the first team

called snaffus. it says romney is ready to do whatever it takes. steve, i'll start off with you one of the things romney team is doing is they have this twitter hashtag. it's grandious newt. they have this digital slogan. rick went to washington and he never came back. the romney team that we saw in iowa willing to get down and dirty. the super pac putting up these vicious ads to take down anyone who is in his way. it seems that he's back, jimmy. >> this is politics. it's not for the light hearted. the mitt romney wants to go out and play this gain, that's perfectly fine. at least his super pac is out there doing this. if he's not doing that and the super pac is going dirty and

playing back politics, let them do that. if he wins the nomination and they go up against barack obama, they will get demoralized. the obama campaign team is on their ball. they know what they're doing. >> the romney campaign has a web video up going after president obama's economic leadership saying obama isn't working. where is newt gingrich? where is he going to make his final stand? >> i think if you start counting delegates in the south, there's about 600 delegates down there and the republican party is a southern party. newt clearly is banking on georgia, tennessee and oklahoma. these tactics of changing the rules in the middle of the game, this is a great way to lose a general election. they will really tick off grass root tea partiers and social conservatives with these antics and do this with a two delegate

welcome back. we continue to follow that breaking weather news. this is out of alabama. alabama is one of more than seven states with either tornado watches or warning in effect. this according to our meteorologist on the ground. they are keeping an eye on the midwest and the south after two days of really vicious weather for the folks in this part of

the country. jim is on the ground in indiana where he's watching the latest developments there. there's also reports of tornadoes touching down in illinois. we're working to confirm all of this. we know there's some dangerous weather on the horizon in several states. we'll keep you posted on what's happening there. also, students at the ohio school where three classmates were killed have almost finished their first day of class. it was an motional return for the students that attend chardon high. >> it was like surreal when i walked into the cafe like a wave just hit me. i just felt something. it wasn't like a spirit. i didn't feel anything like that. i just felt something. just a wave of emotion. i was like this is where it happened. >> prosecutors have charged 17-year-old t.j. lane as a

juvenile with three counts of murder. tomorrow a funeral will be held for 16-year-old daniel parmetor. a viewing is under way right now. kevin tibbles joins us now. describe this day for them. >> reporter: obviously, it's a very sad day and a sad time for this town and the school. they wanted the kids to get back to school as quickly as possible because counselors say that essentially helps speed up the healing process. they get a sense of normalcy back in their lives. just as a sign of solidarity, what's been going on here, last night there was a basketball game in which chardon played another school. everyone stood and cheered. everyone was wearing chardon colors and the posing team came out wearing chardon t-shirts. today when they went to school

kids from other schools came by and applauded the kids as they went back into their schools. here is what a girl from a neighboring school had to say. >> just to show chardon that we're supporting them and know what they're going through and tell them to stay positive even though negative things have happened. >> tomorrow is the funeral for one of the shooting victims. he died on the scene at the school. i'd also like to tell you that the other two victims who were taken to the hospital prior to dying actually managed to donate their organs and some 16 other people have now benefitted from this tremendous loss that has taken place here in this community. they' their legacy is going to continue and live on. thank you very much. i want to bring you back to the

breaking news. these tornadoes hammering the midwest as well as the south. jim joins me now. he's in jefferson, indiana. what are the conditions there? >> reporter: you can see louisville a landmark across the river from me here. we're watching tornadoes right now to our west back towards evansville. this line stretches down into south eastern missouri. that's the main event. that's the one that will be unfolding. those storms have not gotten into the most unstable air or the air that would make them most potential to produce long track and big tornadoes like we have seen over the past months in other parts of the country. things have gotten under way in northern alabama. we had tornadoes touch down there. it's the atmosphere's way of giving us an idea of what's to come as we go on in time. it's very windy here. winds are coming out of

evening. indiana is the worst of it pm numerous reports of tornadoes on the ground. one 300 yards wide. picture three football fields wide. also the nashville area into all portions of northern alabama and mississippi you're under a tornado watch right through this evening. as far as what we're dealing with out there with the storm system and areas of concern, the areas of greatest concern is what we will watch around the louisville and nashville area. we're going to zoom in a little closer on the storms. as far as the louisville area goes. looks like the worst of the storms will be there in southern portions of the state. not so much around indianapolis, but a little further there to the north. let me just back it back to where we're looking at the severe weather reports here. the worst of it is in southern indiana. this is southern indiana. we have two huge storms moving through the area. both of these are reporting

tornadoes on the ground. a little wider view shows where louisville is here. these storms will not head your way. tornadoes reported on the ground. that's the worth of it right now. it's a pretty rural area. at least the tornadoes aren't going through big cities, but those small farm town, heads up. one of rush limbaugh's advertisers is no longer willing to be associated with the talk show host. companies have been under fire to full ads after he viciously attacked a georgetown law student. he called sandra fluke a quote, prostitute and a quote, slut on his show. sleep train released this statement. we don't condone negative comments directed towards any group. during his live show today he continued his insults of sandra fluke. >> the woman comes forth with this, frank li hilarious claim

stable high employment manual labor and manufacturing society. we treat the past four years as this aberration. that we went off the rails and if we get our policies right we'll rejoin that particular train. i think we have to start accepting that that particular reality is no longer. >> does that mean we'll always see unemployment rate that's higher than what anyone would really like or does this mean, for example, what the president says regarding if you can't go to a four-year university, you need some technical training. >> it doesn't say anything about our future. our future is going to be whatever we make it. that book is open. i think we live in a society of greater fluidity of many. the contrast is not nearly as good as it used to be.

meaning we have our own issues. the idea we're going to have a heavy industry manufacturing base rather than what we have which is service and ideas. there's a lot going on that's brilliant and exciting in this particular economy, but it requires a real transition. it does mean that we're going to have a higher rate of unemployment or under employment during that transition. we should have an honest discussion about that and our policies should be designed to address that reality, not the fiction of government either cause unemployment or government is going to solve unemployment or somehow there's a moment in time in the past three years where everything went wrong. >> we will see the newest jobs report a week from today. i'm sure we'll have you onto discuss that. a cautionary question for all parents out there. anybody who cares about a kid. how well do you really know the people who are at the day care centers where you drop children off every day? a recent date line investigation

care. she pleaded no contest to criminal conspiracy after her day care center burned down. this woman who runs a center in florida. she served prison time for manslaughter. will they come clean when we ask about their pasts? >> child abuse, cruelty toward a child. >> i forgot about that one. >> i'm not showing you nothing. you can go and you can [ expletive ] . you're the evil one. you're the demon. >> he exploded after a long period of questioning and our people had been there to visit three times. his record has been clean since he got into trouble. you're talking about people we uncovered who shot and killed their spouse. they were involved in fires at their day care center.

take a listen. as you can imagine very scary to hear that. that is the same town where at least six people were killed and more than 100 others injured when a deadly tornado hit their early wednesday. harrisburg is about 100 milest southeast of st. louis. so far no tornado has hit. warning remains in effect there. let's go to the weather channel's jim. we're looking at that video. it's so ominous. when you think about the timing the, harrisburg was hit in the same region that you're looking at right now. >> yeah. i can't imagine what those people are going through. to know that lightning could strike twice within three days is an awful situation. we hope that storm weakens and goes to the south. there are other storms that are awful here.
