crude comments he made about sandra fluke. >> the apology to her over the weekend was sincere. it was simply for using inappropriate words in a way i never do. >> has the man who once rallied the right hurt the party with women voters and independents? romney's old words coming back to haunt him again. santorum and others piling on after romney op-ad supporting an individual mandate is back in the headlines and now some conservatives admit if romney is the nominee they won't be able to fight president obama on health care. another cruel turn of events, snow covering parts of the country. the heartbreaking news of a toddler pulled from the rubble after losing her entire family has died. >> i was holder her hand seconds before they died. plus, they are no saints.

2:03 pm
>> he's barack obama's best friend. that's the irony in all of this. i think his words have gone to great measure to help president barack obama. just the same way from senator santorum is playing so poorly with independents. rush can get away the gop base. with the base he can do no word but with those that hold the cards to the 2012 election, it's devastating. >> we're looking at how devastating this could be beyond rush limbaugh. could this be the end of this radio titan as he's referred to? let's talk about the impact he's having on the gop. i can't tell you how much people expressed discontent that he wouchbts have used this type of language what we all witnessed from rush limbaugh. >> he and santorum went to some

lengths to distance themselves from the comments without picking a fight with limbaugh. for people, particularly women in the political center and on the left, that's never going to be enough. i think it might bring some discomfort to women across the spectrum. both the candidates were in a tough position. for them to pick a fight with rush limbaugh and make that ta main news story instead of hoping the spotlight would stay on rush, would be a tough call. it's obviously on rush with the advertiser leaving. >> is it picking a fight when you are standing up for what is clearly right, and what is standing up for what is clearly wrong here? that doesn't sound like you're picking a fight. it's doing the right thing. >> rush initiated it. i don't think you're picking a fight. the reality is many americans perceive rush limbaugh as the face of the republican party, as the face of the conservative movement. the gop today will be quick to
2:05 pm
say he wasn't elected anything. his name is not going to appear on a ballot box. people perceive him in that leadership role. it's only when he causes trouble that the gop will distinguish him in any degree from what they are trying to do. fp they want him in good time, they have to take him in bad. >> let me bring in an online advocacy organization. thank you for your time. our knew nbc poll shows that the debate over social issues is hurting the republicans among suburban women. 48% say the democrats krould control congress versus 39 percent. how does rush limbaugh continue to hurt the republican party with what's happening now? >> yeah. his apology was a nonapology. top republican, advertisers and
2:06 pm
sandra fluke said it wasn't enough. what's really shocking is he spent, i think he did maybe 53 separate statement oefrs the course of three days last week attacking her. what that tells us is this isn't a one off thing. the top republicans who are standing with him are saying that they are very happy to engage in this war against women. i think it's going to hurt them in the long run. >> ann, let me bring you back in. does rush limbaugh continue to hurt them. the numbers show social vu issues are hurting the republicans with suburban women. these advertising companies bail for a reason and i believe it's because of the female voices out there and men that were offended by this. there's a lot of female bloggers and writers who were on the forefront as well. does this continue to factor into the conversation and hurt the overall party? >> michael is absolutely right. the republicans have handed the democrats and the white house an opening they didn't automatically have.
2:07 pm
in 2010, there was no gender gap. women broke evenly for democrats and republicans. democrats traditionally and in this election need women to favor them much more heavily in that. now you're starting to see that break happen. i think it wasn't a given it was going to be that way but the republican reaction, the words have been used during this contraception fight and on social issues. it's not just contraception and not just rush. you're talking about ultrasounds near pregnancy, all kinds of social issues. that's where the opening has happened. >> let me go back to shanna here. you're organization and others not willing to accept this apology, this new version of it. nine advertisers out. what are you looking for next? >> we're going to continue to push the remaining advertisers who are rewarding rush limbaugh with his attacks on women. we've had over 100,000 people sign a petition asking the remaining advertisers to pull their funding.
2:08 pm
we're going to continue reminding people who is on the side of women and who isn't. >> michael, i want to talk about this romney opt ad. you heard limbaugh say he's becoming like the people on the other side. basically still weaving in that language rather than standing on an apology, he brings in the other side and that his behavior mocks or mimic what is they do. >> i think it lacks credibility. when the defense becomes i'm at their level, i think it's completely lacking in credibility. it will be interesting to see whether he is suspend frd the air waves which there been any number of instances is that people have said things inappropriate and that's usually the punishment that follows. let's see if it happens here. >> you mention people who will have been punished. don imus commented, coming down hard on rush limbaugh. we know don knows to be in this territory. he's been there many times. let me switch over.

rick santorum says this disqualified him or makes him unqualified to fight president obama in the op-ed. first we establish incentives for those uninsured to buy snur insurance or tax credits encouraging free riders to take spojts for themselves rather than pass their medical cost onto others. this is 2009, op-ed from romney. how does he fight against it isn't the how does he call for it to be removed or repealed at this point? >> this isn't news. obviously this is something that romney said a couple of years ago but it's been out thereto in public. the big question is how will he square what he did in massachusetts with what president obama has done at the federal level. in a general election would they be able to run against ooeeach
2:10 pm
other. we've seen romney make the case over and over again that you dwounts at the federal level what they did at the state level. if only president obama called him, he could have told him not to do that. romney is going to have to go back to this topic as he has over the course of the primary. >> it's not news. we heard this from him. what i do believe is the news, it seem romney supporters have no, ma'am come up with a solid defense to it. i point to this. eric cantor on "morning joe" asked about this op-ed. let me let you hear their explanation. let's play both. >> if the process he's gone through and arrived at the conclusion that what we felt was appropriate massachusetts is not now appropriate for the federal level, i take him as word on that. >> the only good news is he shifted on that and running against a guy who passed it into
2:11 pm
law. >> that doesn't get you out of hot water does it, ann? >> certainly not. those are two different explanations right there. also, if you're being accused of shifting on a position, and you're mitt romney, that's not good news either. the idea that he's flip-flopped is not a welcome one to them. i suspect they have had some other things to worry about. it's the economy, his remarks on wealth. i expect once we get through super tuesday, if he picks up momentum, they will turn back to answering that question once again. >> all right. thank you very much. ann, michael, shanna, great pleasure. the "news nation" is following developing news over israel's nuclear stand off with iran. right now president obama and prime minister benjamin

netanyahu are in closed doors. both leaders are appearing unified. >> even as we will continue on the diplomatic front, we will continue to fighten pressure when it comes to sanctions. i reserve all options. >> i rsrael must have the abili to defend itself, by itself against any threat. when it comes to israel's security, israel has the right, the right to make its own decision. s >> let's bring in correspondent, mark. as we wait to hear reaction, the reality here is you've got headlines talking about these

two men having not the best relationship, but they know this is high stakes and they both cannot come up short here. >> yeah, that's right. you saw both of them try very hard in their remarks before the meeting to say that israel and the united states are standing shoulder to shoulder with president obama saying that the u.s. is committed to defending israel. also importantly for prime minister netanyahu that the u.s. recognizes that israel has a right to defend itself. that's the piece of president obama speech that prime minister netanyahu zeroed in on. the reason he did that is because israelis want a signal from the united states that if they judge it's important to carry out a military strike on i ran that the u.s. won't stand in the way. they will allow israel to take the steps it deems necessary. that will be a large part of the substance of the conversation between the two men. >> let me play a bit of what the

president said this weekend. >> already there's too much loose talk of war. over the last few weeks such talk has only benefitted iranian government. now is not the time for bluster. now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and to sustain the brood international coalition we have built. >> mark, let me ask you, the president is looking at this globally. we're talking about even the price of oil being filtered into this conversation while obviously, and i believe you mentioned this as well, israel is looking at its safety in this region. how do those differing goals, if they're different at this point affect the conversations today? >> israel and the u.s. approach iran from what different perspective. while both countries don't iran to get a nuclear weapon, israel believes it faces a much more
2:15 pm
immediate threat and the israelis have judged they feel like they have less time to make a decision about when to go ahead with the military strike. president obama, as he said in that excerpt has spent a lot of time marshaling economic sanction, building up support around the world, and he believes there's enough time in space to let the sanctions bite and to sfee they force the ir iranian regime to change course. they could find themselves in the position where the iranians are in position of nuclear weapons which they have threatened to use already against israel. >> all right. thank you. we know that the gop candidates will address apec on tuesday. we know this filters into presidential politics as well. thank you.

now back to politics and just how much president obama is benefitting from the bruising gop battle that could grow even more intense if super tuesday does not present clear result os on a front-runner. we heard before that a number of the gop establish have been quite concern with the primary, now with social issues at the fore front. we're seeing the president is benefitting to some degree. >> this is why a lot of people on the republican side want this race over with after super tuesday. we've seen clear evidence since our last poll in january, this poll that's out today, that this race has really hurt the republican brand. we've seen that in this poll. we've seen it in where president obama stands with mitt romney and how people view mitt romney.
