losses in georgia, tennessee and oklahoma. romney was under heavy fire today from rick santorum. >> obama care is in fact the death nail for freedom. that's why it must be repealed. the eventual nominee is singularly the worst person to make that case to the american people. >> santorum is about to hold a second campaign vent in alabama while his camp tries to pressure newt gingrich to drop out. newt gingrich ain't budging. let's bring in our panel. it's great to have you here. let's start right out of the gate on this one. how important is it for mitt romney to get a victory in a

competitive southern contest. we're talking about the hospitality of the south. >> i think it's critically important. i think the crux of the issue is religion. i don't think it's idealogoy alone. the fact that he can't get to 30% is there's some lingering bias toward the lds church. i think he has to con front that head on. i think he could have done it in the midst of the contraception debate. it was the opportunity to offer a j.f.k. kind of speech especially when santorum took on the j.f.k. speech of 1960. >> i think you're hitting on a good point one that people aren't willing to expose. i think his religion is hang up for him. his spokesman calling on those states as must win to remain viable.

do you expect him to drop out o or do you think newt gingrich tries to stay in this until the convention? >> he looks like he's having fun describing his opponents as bunny rabbits and him as the r tortoise. i think the two races down south are critical for him to have a strong showing down there. i also think he is in danger if he wins the contests. he's in danger of becoming a r.j. nam candidate. he won in georgia, his home state. i think you see santorum starting to make this argument. he's making this argument that newt gingrich doesn't have much legs, many leg, many legs outside of the south. >> chip, i was to get your reaction when asked if any of

the gop candidates should drop out. >> i would be asking others to get into the race. i'd still be asking jeb bush, chris christie. >> is there the possibility that when asked, any of these candidates should be dropping out. santorum trying to slyly, at least in front of the cameras say that newt gingrich should get out. do you think there are bigger conversations happening behind the scenes. >> i've been flp a crowded primary and i prefer all my opponents to drop out. it's a will the easier to win. i think at the end of the day, nobody is going to drop out because there's not a reason to. i think newt gingrich got what he wanted. then there's louisiana behind that. in the world of super pacs, you no longer need the momentum to raise money. presidential campaigns don't lose. sglo is it more about ego. romney saying it will take an

act of god for santorum or gingrich to get enough delegates. >> i think god is probably smart enough to stay out of the primary process. i think it is about ego. he's having a great time. he's talking about his issues. we're talking about him today. he's in the process. he's making a difference talking about the issues. i don't think there's any reason for him to get out. somebody involved four years ago in race we didn't get out until john mccain has enough delegates to win. i'm not going to ask anybody to get out until they have enough delegates to win the nomination. >> there are certain voices out there including george will arguing that president obama is unbeatable. republicans should focus on the congressional elections this fall and just consider this something that they need to put on hold until 2016. what do you say to that? >> i think it was a remarkable piece that he wrote last sunday. i think there's some merit to it. who would have believed that the

fortunes of the gop would have shifted so dramatically since the 2010 midterm election in which that tea party support allowed a retacking of the house. it doesn't look good. thomas, my view is politics is a football. you have no idea which way it's going to bounce. we have a situation in iran. we have gas prices that could escalate and we have a supreme court decision coming on health care. i don't think it's over. i thought it was creative argument for him to make. >> chip, michael brings up great point about 2010. what does it mean that in just a short period of time they look scattered and off brand, off message? >> i think the one thing we know for certain is change is certain. after the 2008 campaign, the republican party was dead. we were going to be the minority party for a generation a 2010, we were back in charge of the house. we won the governor race and obama was a for sure one termer.

fast forward a year from now, it looks better for him. i think we will see this ebb and flow continue to ebb and flow. i think we can beat him in november. we have to get our act together and make a case. >> what about the fact that the president is out there and this new documentary, but the word on the street about how that is being received? >> i think a lot of things that george column gets at is there's this ongoing fight and mitt romney is unable to consolidate his base. he hasn't been able to make a good argument for a mitt romney presidency. i think that's you're starting to see from the obama campaign and they get their message together. we'll see more of it and talk about it with there video that's hitting the streets and the trailer out today. >> i was in wedding this week and this woman looked at me and said that's the good hair with all those problems, right? it kind of summed it up right

country. >> is it rewriting history if you don't talk about it? >> i think that is what this video will try to do. i think they will try to put their spin on it. it's a smart thing to do. it begins he's going to start spending it with his version on the last three years. i think the american people and the republican candidates will disagree with their history writing. >> it includes the auto bailout, that decision to tackle health care. the republican candidates have been hitting hard on those fronts. take a listen to this. >> if we don't do this now, it will be a generation before 30 million people have health insurance. >> if the auto industry goes down, what happens to america's manufacturing base? what happens to jobs in america? what happens to the whole

midwest? >> is this to the romney campaign a reminder of the message let detroit fail over and over again and the obama administration saved the auto industry and now it's rebounding better than it ever has? >> absolutely. i think it's a point you will see the administration make over and over again in those big midwestern states that are so depen dent on the auto industry. places like michigan. we saw that editorial from mitt romney hurt him in some ways in that michigan fight he won barely against santorum. i think this is a way -- it reminds me of october 2008 when obama campaign, as he was running for president, released that 30 minute ad that ran on the different networks except abc. here is an administration that understands the power of media, the power of story. in some ways they are making up for the fact that over the last

three years and half seen a lot of messaging, a lot of the narrative and a lot of the arkt to republicans. here again, you see the president bringing in some big guns, tom hanks, and folks that americans are familiar with. i think he is on the one hand reminding people of where he came from in terms of a lot of the problems that were left on his plate when he took office, but also the movement that was the obama campaign. >> chip, it's really doubtful that obama re-election team is discounting any of the contenders on the right. they probably have their sights more focused on mitt romney, seeing him as the venal republican nominee. in an interview yesterday romney talked about the campaign against him. >> they're going to go after me on a personal base and try to make me into something i'm not. we're going to talk about the president's record. we're going to ask people are

you happy with what's happened in terms of job creation? are you happen with the trillion dollars of additional debt every year. >> personal basis. what do you think he's eluding too? what do you think he means there by personal? >> i think he knows the obama administration and the campaign and the democratic national committee have been thinking he's going to be the nominee. i think he's saying he's expecting the kitchen sink to comes flying when this campaign gets started if he's the nominee. he knows it's going to be a tough campaign. the obama folks know how to run campaigns. they are very good at it. he's saying i'm going to be ready for whatever they have to throw at me. >> great to see you today. >> thank you. if you go out and deliver a conservative victory for us on tuesday, this race will become a two person race.

rerouted. it's great to have you here. your reaction to the storm so far and our coverage of it. >> this is an incredible storm. it's the largest storm we have seen of this type of quite some time. this is really indicative of the kind of activity we find on the sun as the sun makes its way to its upcoming sun spot. that will be next year. we can expect to see lots of these kinds of veevents. >> tell us if this solar material penetrates the earth, earth's meganettic field, what would be the worst case scenario? >> here is what's going to happen. these mass ejections blast the particles out into the solar system if it happens to be the sun is in direct line, these particles come down creating the

aora borialis. we get disruptions in power systems and can cause rerouting of air flights. >> how does this effect the northern lights and the show that some people can see on the planet? >> the more the intense the solar storm is, the more intense the northern and southern lights. the more intense they are, the farther south they can. that's the really important effect about this is that most people living in the northern portions of the extreme southern portions may get to see these on a regular basis. for those of us that live toward the middle latitudes, this is rare opportunity for us to see these kinds of events. if the weather is clear in your area, it's a good idea to go out in the evening to see if you can see the beautiful coloring lights of the atmosphere toward

the north. >> correct me if i'm wrong, this is part of the sun's 11-year sickle? >> that's right. >> is it true this type of activity could reach its peak next year? >> yes. the way the sun works for this particular star is there's a sickle of activity that runs over the course of 11 years and we'll be reaching the peek about next year. as we continue to work our way toward the peak, thomas, we'll be seeing increasing activity of this kientds we can't predict exactly when it's going to happen. it comes and goes. we can expect that on the whole though we should expect to see this kind of activity on the increase. >> all right. obviously, the solar flare is not disrupting the happy birds in hawaii in. >> things are pretty good right here. the sky is clear. it's nice and sunny. i'll be going up to the summit later this week. hopefully the weather will hold for that.

in if he wants to stay in. why the mixed messaging. why not come out and say newt gingrich, you need to back out of this and let me run with the ball because i have more momentum than you do at this point? >> i don't think the former speaker is going to get out of the race, but i think really that anybody who votes in alabama, mississippi,fully of the upcoming primaries need to consider who the conservative is in the race. it's down to two people. it's either governor romney or rick santorum. i'll give you an interesting statistic. if newt gingrich had not been in the ohio race and if his supporters had broken just 60% toward santorum and 40% toward romney, santorum would have carried the state by better than 25,000 votes. you can see what this does to d divide up the conservative vote.

romney's hope is they continue to split their vote. if it ever gets down to one-on-one, romney is going to lose. >> he only lost ohio by 10,000 votes. if he can't zoom past mitt romney to grab that magic number, might there be a deal cut for santorum to be romney's running meat. santorum very popular with conservatives and especially on super tuesday. >> he is very popular, but the head of the ticket is the most important thing. what we saw in ohio is that governor romney does not have appeal to middle class or lower middle class, blue collar workers. there's a real division in the race between the upper level income and everybody else. he doesn't have that appeal. he spent $12 million in the state of ohio and still it was a very, very close race. i think rick santorum's message today is right on point.

that is this race is now down to two people. voters in any upcoming primary state need to keep that in mind. >> santorum's campaign is saying it's not planning to take part in anymore debates. newt gingrich is calling for more debates. even one before next tuesday's primary. if santorum wants to drive home that two-person race theme, why not go head to head and try to outshine them both? >> i think we've had more debates this time than we've had in the history of the country. we've had dozens of debate, town hall meetings, everything else. it's not that people have not had chance to see them go head to head. i think rick's point is he has to carry on his own campaign. i think he driving home the message that he is the true conservative with the real track record and romney is not. >> you endorsed mitt romney back in october of 2011 and switched

to rick santorum last month. has he fulfilled your expectations? >> he has. his campaign gets better and better. i think he gets better and better as a candidate. i think the thing people is noticing is the more they see santorum, the more they like him. governor romney's campaign is pretty steady. it's not getting any better and he's not making appeal to the people we're going to need in the fall and that's the blue collar workers. that's the average person. >> thank you, sir. great to see you today. >> thank you. now to developing news on capitol hill. john boehner is giving in and announcing that the house will take up the senate's $109 billion transportation bill. i'll show you live pictures. they just began voting on amendments to talk about that bill. speaker boehner spent much of yesterday to get the support needed for the house version which runs about $260 billion. it fell short.

>> we're going to continue to have conversations with members about a longer term approach which most of our members want. at this point in time, the plan is to bring up the senate bill. >> luke russert joins me now. is this just a threat to house republicans or something more? >> that's the big question on cap poitol hill. he's telling members of his own house gop conference because we can't find an agreement, we can't come together to put our brand on something, we're going to end uptaking the senate bill. this could almost be like a parent saying to their unruly children, if you can't figure it out, we're going to do it my way. that's what you have seen john boehner do on this transportation bill. he wants to have it. there's a lot of division. some said the cost too much. others said they didn't like the

cuts to transit funding and major cities. the senate has a two-year bill that cost about $109 billion. it's a bipartisan bill. it's very popular with democrats over in the house. if that bill sees a vote on the house floor, it will pass and be the law of the land within the next two weeks. >> the house bill or the house passing its job act earlier today, why did nancy pelosi seem to diss this earlier? >> very interesting. it was a bill endorsed by president obama. the house majority leader came up with it. things about filing with the scc and whatnot. listen to what she had to say about it. >> it's because it's so meager. trumpet, here comes the little ki king. let's not mistake it for what we

need to do for a real serious jobs bill for our country. >> nancy pelosi calling the bill the little king, trumpeted it into congress. this has been very popular amongst members of both parties. it's moving forward. democrats would like to see more. when you have such a partisan house gop conference, it's not like any of the big bills put forward by the president. this is the best thing they can get and tlaheir talking it. the prosecution has finished calling witnesses in the spying trial. that tops our look. he's accused of using a web cam during an intimate encounter he had with another man. his defense team will call its own witnesses on friday. his lawyers say they haven't

ruled out robbie from facing the stand. he faces up to ten years in prison on a hate crime charge. the veterans affairs department said it found more missing headstones. the total number of incorrectly marked graves stand at 249 after problems were discovered back in january. family members of the deceased will be notified while they fix the issues. a new bill allowing people in oklahoma to carry their firearms openly on their hip or in a shoulder holster has cleared the state house. it's headed to the state senate committee for full review. the bill prohibits people from openly carrying guns into government offices, schools or professional sporting arenas. you must also show a permit if asked by a police officer. if you just found a great deal on an airline ticket out there, consider yourself to be one of the lucky ones. we should expect air fares to stay high for at least the next

eight years. the faa says the reason, kompb tigs or rather the lack of it. tom costello covers the aviation industry. this is not good news for people and even for those people that are looking for the airline industry to rebound, this has got to hurt. >> i think that the airline industry is rebounding. the biggest problem it has is that jet fuel right now is just out of control. it's up about 260% in ten years. air fares up about 6.7% over ten years and the airlines are g getting squeezed on that. airlines are full. look at the mergers that we have seen in just the last few years. there are fewer players vying for your dollars. we've had united and continental merge. we had delta and northwest merge. southwest and airtran merge. as a result, there are fewer carriers and not as much

competition. air fares are going up. we had a dozen rate hikes last year alone. i'm not so sure i buy the idea that we're going to see 1.2 billion people travel in 20 years. that may be a bit of a stretch, i think. i'm not sure that all the people who can fly, come up with the money to do so over the next 20 years will decide they are going to fly. we may have high speed rail. there may be other alternatives. we'll see how that goes. i think it is true don't look for air fares to come down. if you factor in the cost of inflation they haven't budged much over the last 20 years. you have to consider you're paying for your bags and all your drinks and everything else or leg room. that's not going to change. the airlines tell me that's not going to change. it's likely that air fares will go up. >> with a lot of these companies that have merged offering less flight, being less competitive, if there is that prediction with the amount of people traveling over the next 20 years going up,

doesn't it make sense for most of the companies that have recoiled in that merjer interaction could look at how to hedge their bets properly to move forward and expand? >> the argument all along has been that if the airlines don't consolidate, if they don't come together and merge then one or more is going to die. they came together out of necessity. american airlines has a weak balance sheet. a they merge and went through bankruptcy they became stronger. might other competitors decide to jump in. that's always a possibility. a lot of airline execs say it's the worst possible business to be in because it seems from 50, 60 years they have struggled to make a profit. there's be too many carriers and now there are fewer of them, they're able to raise fares. >> nice to see you. thank you.
