we have the author of the latest little blue bill. and melissa harris joins me as well. hi, everybody. happy friday to you. i'm thomas robertson. before we get to the agenda, breaking news to start off with, taking you to washington, d.c., where moments ago hollywood actor and activist george clooney was arrested. he was protesting outside the pseudothese embassy along with his father nick clooney, who you see there. clooney was joined by several congressmen as well as martin luther king iii. clooney spoke just before the arrest. take a listen. >> the second thing is a very simple thing. it's for the government to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. stop rating them. stop starving them. clooney has been in washington since wednesday. he spoke with president obama at

the white house yesterday. well, keeping them honest in illinois. the land of lincoln, the next big prize in the republican primary battle. the top two hopefuls vying for lincoln's party. ahead of next week's crucial clash. in it he said it could be and honest and goodness fight to the finish. they put romney and rick santorum in a dead heat. they are acknowledging it might be anything but inevitable. >> an aid said it will take an act of god for rick santorum to get the nominee. >> anybody has a chance to become the nominee. >> joining me is pat, a romney supporter. as we talk about illinois and what's taking place in the state, rick santorum's momentum is meeting romney's cash, doing so in a big way. the romney campaign and his

super pac have spent a come pined $2.6 million. that means romney is outspending santorum by a ratio of 5-1. with that much money invested, why is this race neck and neck with the people of illinois? it's not that close. it's an economic message. this state is on the verge of going off a financial cliff. the people in the state want some change. 70% of the vote is north of i-80. it fits governor romney perfectly. senator santorum is not on the ballot in the congressional districts. he can only get at most 44 delegates. i think he's going to win and he'll continue to win after illinois. it will be a big decisive state for him. >> you talk about rick santorum

only has one paid staffer, 400 volunteers. they would tell you he is waging a real battle there. and his super pac spent 300,000 attacking romney in illinois. >> meet the real mitt romney. supported the wall street bailout. raised fees by $700 million. leaving massachusetts over a billion in debt. his health care takeover, the blueprint for obama care. >> pat, a sharp message coming from the santorum campaign. one of the sharpest attacks yet. so what's the response to such an aggressive attack on romney's record? >> i'm not sure if the attacks are effective at all. the people are concerned with getting job creation going again. so at this point in the campaign, we've seen so much.

people want to vote for somebody who can turn the economy around. and an equally large story in the scheme of presidential politics is is the evaporation of support for barack obama in the state of illinois. he said, despite calls for supporters and pundits to let mitt be mitt. it's clear mitt already is being mitt. that's part of the problem. is that his major hangup. and that is the hangup. >> the hangup, he has as many delegateses the rest of them combined. at this point, the democrats went through the same process four years ago about senator clinton and barack obama. it's all going to shake out. he's got a great campaign and great structure. the people were fairly

politically savvy. and mitt romney is the guy to do it. i live and work here. i'm familiar with every inch of the state. mitt romney is going to have a great day on tuesday. thanks for joining me. >> thanks for having me. >> rick santorum trying to stop the fire storm of his comments. he's backtracking on a suggestion he made to a newspaper making english the officialling waj could further the territory's cause. so peter, what sort of reaction are these comments getg from the people in puerto rico? >> rick santorum left puerto rico. he left a fire storm behind him, trying to repair the damage after making a comment on wednesday to local newspapers. he claimed that he was maliciously misquoted.

one of the conditions would be that english become the principle language. that obviously upset a lot of people in the community here, including his supporters. one of whom said he wanted his name removed as a delegate on the ballot. santorum tried to backtrack. here's a little bit of what he said yesterday. >> i said, english that has to be learned as a language. english is widely spoken and used. this needs to be a li lingual country. not just a spanish speaking country. some people have said while it may have an impact, it could have a positive impact elsewhere mainland among tea party supporters specifically, who

director. it's great to see you all this morning. the obama-biden duo in full campaign mode now. it's clear mitt romney is going to be nominee. flst no point in waiting. we can't wait. >> so we can't wait. is the campaign if full mode right now? or is this jv strategy? or are we seeing vs. today strategy? >> this is let's getting the machinery rolling publicly. they're doing grass roots organizing in each of the states. there's been a lot of activity going on behind the scenes. so this is starting to move that out a little bit more out front

and a little bit more publicly. he lumped romney into santorum and the whole pack. it sort of diminishes his status, another what way to beat him up a little bit. in the age of a 24-hour news cycle, how will that play out? >> when that came out, i thought, this is something you normally see in the summer before an election. thuf positive message about the candidate. normally this section of the campaign is defining the other guys. they're doing both simultaneously, which shows you they understand the void that republicans are leading with the public for the regular guy. so they give you joe biden. for the positive, optimistic guy, barack obama. >> doug, a new pew poll shows the longer the race goes on the higher the president's favorables increase while

romney's december kree. 20% of supporters would switch sides and vote for obama if romney becomes the nominee. >> do you believe that? >> certainly not at all. a lot of hillary clinton supporters were upset in the convention. they unified behind barack obama. republicans have a great unifier in barack obama as well. that's why we seegistering vote. iowa went from 110,000 deficit for republican voters to now 11,000 in iowa for republican voters. we have real key opportunities. >> so final question, lightning round for all of you. the new poll showing the gop image fairing best with white voters. those making more than $75,000. it's not fairing well with key demographic groups, women, african-american voters, and voters between the ages of 18

a senior defense official says the soldier aused of gunning down 16 afghan civilians could be flown to a military prison later today. the move doesn't necessarily mean formal charges against the suspect will be handed out right away. the name of the suspect has not been made public. his lawyer says he served three tours in iraq. >> the general has been mild mannered. he was told the tours were over.

and then literally overnight that changed. >> nbc's jim miklaszewski joins with more on this. we learned about the suspect and the alleged atrocities that took police. >> first, the kuwaiti government has also confirmed that he in fact left there and is on his way back to the united states to ft. levinsworth, kansas. the best place for a long-term incourse ration while awaiting possible charges and any criminal actions. the civilian lawyer said he kept the conversations very brief over the telephone. he's concerns military officials would be eavesdropping. that's a good assumption. in civilian cases we see the

conversations end up as evidence during a trial. the lawyer did release a few more details about what may have happened leading up to that incident last weekend. he is telling reporters another soldier had his leg shot off the day before. at the same time while this soldier, the suspect. did have three combat tours in iraq. was seriously injured twice. including a traumatic brain injury. he was reluctant to go back, on a fourth combat tour to afghanistan. you almost see the makings of a defense being mounted before we know who the suspect is. >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon for us. thank you. back to politics and mitt romney and the fact he can't stop being dogged by an issue that no other candidates have had to deal with. the infamous story of the former

nths governor strapping his dog to the roof of his car. it made the front page of the "washington post" this week. the "new yorker" used the story in the most recent cover. remember this? the website, dogs against romney sells bumper stickers that say i ride inside. and with 37% of american households, that's 43 million households owning dogs, the question is, will this story have a real political impact? ann kornlut is the editor and joins me this morning. why does this story continue to have legs? it's a weird one. >> because there's so many dog owners in the country. we see it all the time. a small story gets blown out of proportion. it's an event that took place a number of years ago. it happened in 1983.

it was described later by one of romney's own sons. it's taken on a life of its own. it's an unbelievable image. in part because it could reinforce the image some people have of romney as being unfeeling, uncaring, not quite like everybody else. he didn't strap the dog to the roof of the car. the dog was in a crate. it's not familiar. it's not the normal way to travel with a dog. >> so how do they pivot the branding issue that is about his image and whether or not hoe can be compassionate and kinds dog loving dag. but hoe does he turn the image around? is there a way to do it? >> it's tough. it's been frustrating for him. romney spoke, as we did in our story, he told other people about his compassion towards

dog, about delivering puppies, saying he's a dog lover and it's got to be painful if he does consider himself to have the story repeated over and over again. now that it's taken on a life of it's own. it's been repeated in epic proportions. gayle collins has mentioned this in about 50 columns. for people predisposed not to support romney, it's tough for them to turn this around. >> it's been rough. get it? actor george clooney arrested along with his father and other activists at the top of the hour. this outside the sudanese embassy. the group held a sign that said, sudan, stop weapons of mass starvation. we'll have more details coming up. just when you thought your kids might finally move out and you could have the empty nest syndrome, think again. many are happy just where they are. follow the wings.

welcome back now, everybody. we do understand that the jury is coming back with the verdict in the dharun ravi case. this is the rutgers case basically. and the jury has reached a verdict after three days of deliberations, basically looking into whether or not dhuran ravi should face criminal charges for the fact that tyler clementi ultimately killed himself. he's accused of setting up a spy camera in the room, which caught an intimate account with tyler clementi and another man. 20-year-old ravi faces 15 criminal charges. conviction on the most serious,

70% of them 30 to 34 live at home. is this a common number or is this a sign of rough years in the job market or people doing what they need to do to get by and survive? >> well, we don't have a necessarily a trend on this. we can see the share of young adults are in multigenerational households have increased significantly and have continued to go up since the recession ended. >> where do you think we are in the observation of this? do you think it's peaked? have we gotten that far yet? >> it's hard to tell. we do know that young people have been enrolling in college at record rates. hopefully they're, even if they're at home they're studying and getting additional training. they'll be prepared to get jobs in the economy when the jobs

how do you think that changes the dialogue? we do from the contraceptive rights, which the pill does a lot of things for a woman and her body, not just birth control, where viagra is for the sexual function of a man, and that's it. >> i love these bills and they're funny. they're pushing back and suging if we're going to legislate women's body's, we should legislate men. the problem is, i think you're making a false equivalency. contraception is not just about sex. and things like waiting periods or heartbeat bills is really

about the state being evasively in a constitutionally protected right of women to seek certain kinds of medical treatments, and it's just not quite the same thing. >> let's go over this specifically. we have pennsylvania, new hampshire, arizona, regulating abortion or women's rights. the arizona bill allows employers to deny coverage for contraceptives on religious grounds m and if a woman needs birth control pills pr medical purposes, she has to prove this claim and evidence to her employer or insurer. does this go too far? >> it goes too far. let's take the word woman out. it goes too far in asking citizens to tell their employers anything about their health. if the real false choices being made by conservatives who say

talk about this. there was a hoard of cameras there to capture this. how do you think that's going to change the dynamic of the conversation? >> well, i think he thinks he's being per sued by cameras everywhere he goes. we may as well use the cameras to shine a like on pple who need it more. this is an area, not in south sudan. food is not getting in, aid is not getting in. it's bombed regularly. clooney was just there. i hope it works in bringing more tension attention and putting pressure on sudan. >> it certainly brings in the cameras. it's getting us talking about ichlt he said if action is not

taken, we'll have a humanitarian disaster. how can people push to get something done? our government realizing they want them to get involved? >> well, there are a couple of pressure points. one is sudan unpressured, made some concessions to outside pressure. and there's some possibility it could be embarrassed into allowing food into the mountains, for example. if that doesn't happen, then we are, as clooney says, going to face a famine in about two months. maybe three months. then the question will be, do we have air drops of food. do we send food to the border to get it in? this attention will lead outside countries to be more forceful and robust to get them in.

the consistent finding by the jury in that they found the defendant here guilty of the bias crime of intimidation against tyler cla menty but not against the man that was in the room when the spying was occurred. the bias charges were coupled with the lesser invasion of privacy charges which means he could not have been found guilty of the more serious charges without having been first found guilty of the lesser charges, so the jury came back, in fact with if you take a look at the counts and the findings on them, they found that the defendant was guilty of invasion of privacy and tamperring with evidence and in addition to that he was found guilty of doing so with the intent of intimidating tyler clementi because he was gay but
