their faithful as president, i will follow a very different path than president obama. i will be a staunch defender of religious freedom. the obama -- [ applause ] this regulation from the obama care folks is not a threat and insult to only one religious group. it is a threat and insult to every religious group. and as president, i will abolish it. i don't think i have to tell you this but you know that like economic and religious freedoms, our personal freedoms have also been under attack. few things are more important to us than our health and our
3:01 pm
health care. the tenth amendment gives us the right to clues our own health care. specifically granted to the federal government by the constitution. it preserves those to the states and the people. obamacare violates the constitution and i'm counting on the supreme court to say exactly that. it is not just health care, of course. that this administration attacks. mike and chantel, did you hear this story? they've learn firsthand how the obama government interferes with personal freedom. they run a small business in idaho. they saved enough money to buy a piece of property and to build a home on it. but just a few days after they broke ground, an epa regulator told them to stop digging immediately. the epa said they were building on a wetland. but the property isn't on the wetlands register. as a matter of fact, it sits in a residential area.
3:02 pm
nevertheless, the epa will them, that was a final decision and it could not even be appealed. fortunately, the constitution confronted the obama administration again and the supreme court ruled unanimously for them and against the obama epa just like they should. this administration's attack on freedom extends even to rights explicitly guaranteed by the constitution. the right to bear arms is so plainly stated, so unambiguous, that liberals have a hard time challenging it directly. instead they've been employing every imaginable ruse and ploy to restrict it. and to defeat it. i applaud true conservationists like rob keck who worked to preserve herds for hunting. i applaud for the international
3:03 pm
efforts. i applaud congressman issa and senator grassley for exposing the fast and furious scandal. and of course i applaud the nra leadership for being among the first and most vocal in calling upon attorney general holder to resign or get fired. we need a president who will enforce current laws, that create new ones that only serve
3:04 pm
to burden lawful gun owners. president obama has not. i will. we need a president who will stand up for the rights of hunters and sportsmen and those who seek to protect their homes and families. president obama has not. i will. and if we're going to safeguard our second amendment, it is time to elect a president who will defend the rights president obama ignores or minimizes and i will protect the second amendment rights of american people. we've all seen enough of president obama over the last three years to know we don't want another four. in a second term, he would be unrestrained by the demands of
3:05 pm
re-election, as he told the russian president last month when he thought no one was listening, after a re-election, he would have a lot more, quote, flexibility to do just what he wants. not exactly sure what he meant by that but looking at his first three years, i got a pretty good idea. just consider the courts, for instance. he has an unusual view of the supreme court. and its responsibilities as he reminded us just the other day. he said this. he said i'm confident the supreme court will not take what would be an unprecedented extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected congress. of course, what president obama called extraordinary and unprecedented, the rest us recognize as judicial review. that concept has been the center piece of our constitutional system for hundreds of years. judicial review requires,
3:06 pm
requires, requires of the supreme court strike down any law that violates the constitution. and that's the founding document of our freedoms. that's what they've got to do. but president obama seems to believe court decisions are only legitimate when they rule in his favor. and they're illegitimate if they don't. he thinks our nation's highest court is to be revered and respected as long as it remains faithful to the original intent of barack obama. that's the problem with people who view the constitution as living and evolving. not timeless and defining. they never want to explain just who it is that will decide what the constitution means. and in what way they would have it evolve. in his first material, we've seen this president try to brow beat the supreme court.
3:07 pm
in his second term, he would remake it. our freedoms would be in the hands of an obama court. not just for four years but for the next 40. and we must not let that happen. as president, i'll uphold the rule of law and put america back on the path for the founders' vision. i don't want to transform america. i want to return america to the principles that made this nation great. our founders began with this great american experiment. they created a nation conceived in liberty, and then trusted with us the duty to preserve it and to defend it.
3:08 pm
in the generation since, more than a million americans have made the ultimate sacrifice. one day toward the end of my term as governor, my office got a call telling us that a soldier had been killed in iraq. his casket was on a u.s. airways flight back to massachusetts but his family hadn't been able to be notified in time to get to the airport to receive his remains. and so they asked if i would go to the airport in their stead. i said of course. we drove over to the airport out on to the tarmac. the jet came in and the people disembarked. and then the luggage began coming down the conveyor and after a little while, the casket appeared. on the conveyor. the state troopers who were there with me saluted. i put my hand on my heart. and then i happened to glance up at the terminal.
3:09 pm
and there in boston, there is a big wall of glass at the u.s. airways terminal right where the plane had come in. and it seems that the people coming off the plane had seen all the police cars out there on the tarmac so they stopped. and went up against the glass to see what was going on. then the people down the hall saw the people leaning up against the glass and so they came in behind them and stood behind them. there is a huge crowd of people. and as i look up there, i saw that every single person had their hand on their heart. when i think of our country, it is scenes like that that come to my mind. should i have the hop of serving as president, that's how i will seek to lead. not by pitting one group against another but by bringing us together as americans, patriotic, freedom loving americans. americans want a leader who will tell them the truth. who will live with integrity.
3:10 pm
who will preserve the nation and protect our constitution. we have a sacred duty to restore the promise of america and we will do it. we will do it because we believe in america. we'll stop the days of apologizing for the success at home and never again will we success successes, will we apologize for america abroad.
3:11 pm
there was a time not so long ago when each us could walk a little taller, stand a little straighter because we had a gift that no one else in the world shared. we're americans. that meant something different to each us but it meant something special tufl us. we knew it without question. and so did the world. those days are coming back. that is our destiny. we believe in america. we believe in ourselves. our greatest days are ahead. we are, after all, americans. join me in this great cause. let's take back our nation and defend our freedoms. god bless you. god bless the united states of america. thank you so much.
3:12 pm
>> good afternoon. it's friday, i am a the 13th. and mitt romney has just completed his address to the annual nra convention. in his remarks, he claimed that he represents freedom and that an america who once built the hoover dam cannot build a pipeline. a less than ingenious reference to the key stone pipeline. he also made an outright misrepresentation about the president's open mike moment with the russian president. amongst other things. let's bring in our panel now. with us from washington, political analyst and former dnc communications director karen finney, now columnist for the hill. and democratic strategist julian epstein. i have to get your reaction to that astonishing speech. try not to use an expletive. >> i won't, i won't. i promise. i've taken a deep breath. two thoughts. one, i can't wait to see all the fact checks coming out of dnc.
3:13 pm
the number of, i won't call them lies but misinformation that came out of mr. romney's mouth was stunning. the picture that he was painting of an america, restoring an america. i kept thinking it sounds like you want to go back to a time when women couldn't vote, blacks couldn't vote. it just didn't sound like this was the america that we all know. >> to be fair, karen, he didn't say. that he didn't say he wants to go back to a period before when african-americans couldn't vote, did he? he didn't say that. there were other even more astonishing statements, i thought in the speech. >> when he says things like i want to return america. i want to restore america. i guess the question, when he talked about the constitution not being a living document. should would say that because the constitution is a living document, we passed rights for african-americans to vote. we passed rights for women to vote because we recognize that
3:14 pm
we should expand the freedoms of the constitution. not restrict those freedoms. that's where i come up with that. >> julian, it is astonishing, i think, that he didn't once mention the case of trayvon martin in this speech. there he is speaking to the nra and he never once mentions the issue. >> i think that's exactly right. i think what's most interesting about the speech is what he didn't say. the purpose of the speech was to make peace with the nra. and him saying that he is a pro nra second amendment defender is like lindsay lohan saying she is a model citizen. the fact of the matter is the two biggest, the two biggest legislative fights of the nra in the past did he go aid have been assault weapons and background checks. mitt romney was for regulation to ban assault weapons. he was for background checks until 2004. his position didn't evolve. his position changed 180 degrees
3:15 pm
overnight biffle 2006 when he decided he wanted to run for president, he totally reversed his position. the number of his reversals, on so many positions really gets to be, i think, a serious, serious character issue for him in the general election. what was most interesting about the speech is that he didn't talk about the gun issues. he made only passing reference. he talked nothing but b the major legislative challenges of the nra. he was on exactly the opposite position for them for most of the last decade. >> i have to take issue with you going after listens eight lohan. she's done her service to society. she is trying to live a better life. i think that does a disservice to her quite frankly. >> i was referring to the probation. >> isn't it incredible that now this man is literally deteriorating in front of our very eyes to someone who krootdly and reflexively
3:16 pm
immediately champions whatever cause he needs to. yesterday it was mothers at home. today it is gun owners. who knows what it will be tomorrow? yet all the time what we're looking for is a continuing conviction. what are the policy convictions this man has? today it's guns, great, but what about tomorrow? >> i think his major conviction is a conviction to win the presidency at all costs. that's the clear message we get time and again. but speaking to the point julian made, he was right. he chose to talk about freedom in this broader sense that you hear a lot of times from the right instead of specific gun control issues. that may be because he is trying to firm up his positions given that he's been on the other side of these issues so many times. but that's the thing i thought was interesting. he tried to cloak it all in this idea of freedom.
3:17 pm
but freedom is a broad expansive idea that is supposed to include everybody. that means we balance our rights and freedoms and our liberty. the institution against the individual. not just the sort of very narrow focus that i felt like he was about. >> julian, mitt made what could be seen as a double panda when he brought ann out on stage first thing. take a listen. >> let me give a shout out to all moms that are working. and by the way, to all dads that are working. we love all of you. >> i'm not sure how many working mothers are actually watching that speech. but they are playing rosengate for all its worth, aren't they? >> i think that they are. it is a little absurd this has become a three-day story. hillary rosen has apologized and i would notice she is not associated with the dnc. she is not associated with the
3:18 pm
campaign and the campaign came out immediately and denounced that comments. that's in stark contrast to what mitt romney did when rush limbaugh called sandra fluke a word i would rather not repeat. he refused to stand up rebuke her immediately. i think at the end of the day, all of this mommy wars, if you will, is not going to hide the fact as to where the republican party has been on issues that really matter to women. and i think women are smart enough to figure that out at the end of the day. >> i absolutely agree. thank you both for joining us. >> we'll be right back. >> i have guns myself. i won't tell you where they are. i don't have them on myself either.
3:19 pm
>> really, mitt? okay. let's lock and load. >> i've been a hunler all my life. i never really shot anything terribly big. i used to hunt rabbits. >> he said i have a gun of my own. in fact he does not have a gun of his own. >> be very, very quiet. >> shooting rabbits single shot 22 is pretty hard. >> when it was later revealed he's only been hunting twice, he said he meant varmints. that ain't hunting. that's pest control. >> those small animals can be ferocious. he is struggling with the rising cost of gas. he has figured out a way to streamline deliveries all while trying to minimize price increases to his customers.

happened? my concern is that in order to show the north korean people that he is a tough guy, the new leader of north korea may say, okay, we'll have some short range ballistic missile technology shots or an underground nuclear test. that is of concern. i think that's what we should be concerned about. getting china, getting the six-party countries to pressure north korea to stop some of these altercations that have caused this. >> the administration has said, and i'm quoting, everyone will be watching closely to see how the government of north korea handles this first real test. there was some speculation as you know, that gym jong un might be prepared to have a warmer relationship with the west. but one now assumes this missile firing put pay to that.
