phone with us. these are incredible images to watch. not everybody getting to see this in person. the people in and around washington, d.c. are the lucky ones. it seems that they are extending the flyover here. >> they have been obviously. they did down here also before they took off from cape canaveral. they flew and people lined the beaches. and then off they went. as you reported they are over the rend of the run way here getting ready to put the gear down at -- we are seeing the pictures of the liftoff from the cape. you can-can see the water around there. it got ready and left. they are getting ready to touchdown for shuttle's final flight, the discovery's final flight. it will take its roost for retirement in the smithsonian air and space museum. >> it is amazing to see this modified 747 jet. a lot of people finally have
11:01 am
never seen this. they are getting a chance to witness history in the making. let's talk about discovery itself and why it was chosen to go to the smithsonian and then i want to pick your brain over endeavor and enterprise. >> well, the veteran is discovery. 39 missions out of the 135 flown by the space shuttle fleet. it had the reputation of being the most practical and also the most dependable shuttle. and everybody really enjoyed flying discovery. that's why it was chosen to go to the air and space museum for the smithsonian. they got the number one pick so they took discovery. and as you mentioned the endeavor will go to los angeles. and the intreped will be the enterprise. it was used for drop and landing
11:02 am
missions like you see right here drop from the top of this 747. it's been around for over 30 years, about 35 years. it's ferried a lot of shuttles back after they landed in california. it would ferry them just like it's ferrying discovery up to the smithsonian back from california across the country. and a lot of people got to see them come in and land down here. this is the first time that shuttle has been over a populated area like washington, d.c. and right now it's on the final approach as we see in this beautiful setting there. and i think that the most heart rendering event, if you will, this is going to be the last flight for shuttle discovery. now, it's a flight from here up there but it will go on display permanently in the smithsonian air and space museum which is
11:03 am
only three or four miles away from where it is landing here. >> we are watching the breaking news as the nasa space shuttle discovery which was flown out of kennedy space center atop a modified 747 jet. it's in route to dulles international airport. i have been talking to jay barber. we have been watching the final flight of discovery which has taken an extended time period on the final approach to get on the ground to give people there an opportunity to jump outside and see this. as you said down south in florida today they also made extra time once they took off so people could step outside and see discovery leaving. >> they sure did. they took about 20 or 30 minutes to fly around the area because people were lined up up and down the beaches. then they made one pass over discovery's launch pads at the kennedy space center.
11:04 am
then you can see them climb out and head for this landing there now making at the dulles international airport in virginia just outside of washington, d.c. we are watching it tazcomes in for its final approach. everything looks good. gear is down right where it should be. they should be touching down just any moment. you can see the houses underneath and everything is going perfectly for the final flight of discovery. it stayed 365, a full year in space. >> for so many people have that seen a launch and seen a return and a landing, they'll never forget it. i witnessed one when i was working as a reporter in florida and it was fantastic. what is it like for you to see where discovery is going today and knowing how many people are going to get to experience it now that it will have a home at t the smithsonian? >> it's tough to know that the
11:05 am
space shuttles will not fly anymore. the orion space craft will be arriving in a couple of months. it will be unmanned. it will fly in a year or two, late 2013 or early 2014. here comes the touchdown. they are over the end of the run way. you can see the smoke from the tires. the 747 is down now. the nose wheel is still up. here we go the final touchdown for discovery. it's new home at the air and space museum of the smithsonian institute in virginia. and you saw that p 38 aircraft in front of him, very low only 50 feet off the ground. it escorted the shuttle from the cape this morning, the kennedy space center to dulles in virginia. a good landing, thomas. >> a successful landing on a beautiful day there in washington, d.c. all of our viewers who may not remember this but you have been
11:06 am
there for every takeoff and every landal and helping guide us through our coverage. i appreciate you joining me. this is real history this morning. here it comes to its final stop. while i have you on the phone as we talk about the strategic placing of all of the shuttles, endeavor to the california science center, discovery in d.c. atlantis will remain at kennedy. e enter price coming here to d.c. >> i think that a lot of people were disappointed that houston mission control missed out on a shuttle but nasa was thinking head quarters in washington was where will the most people be able to see the shuttles. that's what dictated where the sites were being selected. now, they are getting out there
11:07 am
a shuttle called explorer which has been on display here for a long time. you can't tell it never flew. it's not a complete shuttle but at least they'll have that at the mission control center in houston. 135 spate shuttle flights. 31 before that. and now we are waiting for america to get another space craft. and that just may be when we do fly back astronauts from here that may be on a commercial space craft from the space exorganization or boeing company has one called the ct 100. orion will fly in late 2013 or early 2014 and it will go out 5,000 miles and come back in at 25,000 miles per hour to simulate a return from deep space. but right now that's the shuttle
11:08 am
at its new home towed over there. i don't know how long it will take them but it won't be too long and it will be at its permanent roost. the smithsonian air and space museum. >> we can see people out there on the field to welcome discovery to town. going to be making its way to its new home at the smithsonian. we have been watching the breaking news of the discovery landing there. nasa space shuttle discovery flown out of the kennedy space center to modified aircraft, modified 747 jet. they did nice flyovers in florida so people could step outside and see discovery leaving as they got to washington, d.c. ta took a couple of extra laps around the capit capitol. the space flight program has been so wrapped in the fabric of american pride. our leadership with space, the
11:09 am
american public has had such a fascination with our program here and now we see that the heralded discovery going to go on display at the smithsonian. how fast are they going to have this ready for the public? >> i don't know. it is ready for the public now but i don't know what they are going to be doing there at the smithsonian. it was prepared for the public before it left here. all of them are. it is process for seven or eight months. endeavor will go out of here in another 30 days or so. they are going 747. they'll take off discovery from here and then they'll bring enterprise over and lift it on top of the 747 and they'll fly enterprise to the intreped to you guyed in new york. >> i'm being handed a note about when this is going to go on
11:10 am
display at the smithsonian. the notice saying it will go on display thursday. so not too long for now for people to have an opportunity to get out there and see discovery in person for themselves when they come to the smithsonian. a perfect time for so many american families who the kids are going to be out from school soon and it is a great reason to come to the nation's capitol. a great reminder the museums are free to the american people and tla c they can visit with this fascinating piece of american history. >> it will be a great place for discovery and discovery has earned it. a total of 365 days in space without a mishap. what a champ. >> really is a champ. want to remind people that this veteran orbiter spent a year over the course of the 39 missions since 1984. i remind all of our viewers that you have been with discovery since that time. you have been seeing these
11:11 am
launches and all of these safe returns and watching the discovery going to its final place, how soon are you going to come visit? >> i'm coming back to see you guys. i'm still on the payroll. nbc kept me around. that's wonderful. we have a great network up there. it's been my honor and privilege to cover all of the missions, not just the 135. i covered the mercury and apollo missions. there have been 166 launched out of here from cape canaveral. i have been there for the liftoff skpp landing every time. it's wonderful that my help has held out. i'm 108 years old now. not quite. >> no, sir. how soon are you going to come up to the smithsonian to visit discovery? >> i was up there. i did the book "moon shot" with allen shepherd.
11:12 am
it was a new york times best seller. we updated it. i came up to the air and space museum a year or so ago and was signing books. i haven't been invited up there yet but if nbc wants me up there we'll come and would like to come up and see you guys in new york again. >> the bosses are listening. i'm sure the people at the smithsonian are listening, too. let's get jay an invitations. we are watching the breaking news of the discovery arriving at dulles international airport. it will make its final home at the smithsonian where it will be on display on thursday. this was a beautiful landing we witnessed. we have been watching this after it took off roughly after 7:00 a.m. nasa space shuttle discovery flown out on top that modified 747. just a reminder about what this shuttle has seen. it's the veteran orbiter of the
11:13 am
fleet more than a year in space over the course of the 39 missions that it saw since 1984. that's more than any other vehicle to launch and return from earth orbit. jay, as i have been talk toog you about where the other shuttles will go you say the special modified 747 next mission will be to bring the intersurprise straight up here to new york to its final home. >> correct. and then it will come back in a couple of months flying endeavor across country out to los angeles. and then that will do it because atlantis will go on display in the kennedy space center visitor's center. we get over 4 million tourists here a year. people don't realize it but florida is famous for disney world and the other attractions but the visitors center here at
11:14 am
the kennedy space center in florida is the fourth largest toured by tourists. people don't realize that but it really is. it has a lot of people here, has all the history of the apollo space craft out there. my old dear friend allen shepherd's apollo 14 is there. there is a lot to see. no one can compete when it comes to air and space with the smithsonian. they are fantastic. it was the smithsonian that i did -- i was talking about the book a while ago. i did the book live from cape canaveral. they printed it. that was fantastic. that was 50 years on the job. i'm in my 54th year by nbc. i was asked the other day you are on a new five-year contract with nbc. that will take you to october 2nd, 2016.
11:15 am
are you going to retire then? i said i'll be 82. that might be a great place to have a change in career. >> a change in career. it sounds like you need more sand under your toes. >> you got to keep going. >> so for all of our viewers watching what we're seeing here, a closer shot of discovery as its made its way to dulles landing moments ago. if we can get that shot back up. we had it while we were talking to jay. a beautiful shot of the discovery along the modified 747 over the nation's capitol. discovery flying its last of 149 million miles before landing at dulles. they opened up the air space over washington, d.c., the nation's capitol. you can see the aircraft there about 1,500 feet off the ground. and then it was there doing laps around washington, d.c. in a
11:16 am
salute to the nation's capitol. being welcomed by people who stepped outside to witness discovery coming to its new home at the smithsonian. coming to a complete stop. they will work on getting the successful separation from discovery and its piggyback ride on the modified 747. it is supposed to be on display by thursday there at the smithsonian. that is pretty quick turn around getting the aircraft from florida up to washington this morning and ready to go by thursday. again, this is the world's most travelled space ship. it has been in space roughly combined a year combining the 39 missions that it has seen since 1984. it really is amazing to think that it's the end of the program and now it's going to its final home at the smithsonian.
11:17 am
certainly this is a welcome sight for the people at the smithsonian that have been preparing to bring this shuttle to its final home. >> it sure is. this is the appropriate place for this shuttle for discovery. as we said it's the champ. it belongs in the smithsonian. >> starting to move now. they are probably going to take it into a hangar letting everyone get a really good beautiful look. a great beautiful look at discovery as it finally comes home to where it's going to be displayed for visitors for years and years to come at the smithsonian. great to talk to you this morning. thanks for your time. >> thanks for having me on, thomas. we're going to check in with cristin welker who was outside the white house during the flyover. i have been talking to jay. it is amazing for people like yourself who were outside on the
11:18 am
streets to see the discovery come to town. how many laps did they do? >> well, i have to make a concession. i was inside doing work but a lot of folks here were outside and watched the shuttle and said it was absolutely amazing, breath taking. just a lot of the reporters around town took a moment to step outside and watch the shuttle go over head. there is also a breaking developing story here with the secret service scandal so i was inside making phone calls about that. but i was quite anxious to hear the reaction of a lot of my colleagues who said it was an incredible sight. >> we forgive you for doing your work. you're also getting ready because i think you are in the rose garden right now because the president will be speaking here shortly, correct? >> that's absolutely right. he is going to announce a $52
11:19 am
million plan to basically increase federal oversight of the oil markets. the key thing here is he wants to call on congress to increase the penalties for manipulation of the markets. it's being dubbed a five point plan. i believe we have a graphic. i'll read you the highlights including requesting funding to put more "cops on the beat" to oversee markets. monitor energy market activity. and the big one i was talking to you about to basically increase civil and criminal penalties for manipulation of key energy markets. from one to ten million dollars. he is calling on congress to empower the trading commission to implement standards that would allow the commission to better address price volatility
11:20 am
and has an executive order to basically increase information sharing. the bottom line is he is trying to take action as we watch oil prices and the price of gas go up and down. we just held a conference call with administration officials and asked what would the impact be on the price of gas. they said they are not going to projthat. this administration doesn't like to project what the impact would be just in case it is not exactly what they say it will be. the republicans have called this a gimmick. speaker boehner saying that this really comes down to a problem with the president's energy policy. as we have been talking about this is a big election year issue. the republicans see high gas prices as really one of the president's weaknesses and have seized on this. this is in some way the president's way of addressing some of that criticism. >> we need to get in a break now before the president comes out. >> absolutely. we were told about ten minutes
11:21 am
about five minutes ago. we have about five minutes left. >> we will get back to you. thanks to all of you. we will go back to the president speaking live from the rose garden in a second. we have a lot on the agenda. coming up we will take you back to the president speaking as well as mitt romney's message to president obama to start packing. we'll have that and more after this. c'mon dad!

we are waiting for the president to speak on gas prices. we'll take you back there as soon as that happens. moving on to campaign politics now. a big endorsement from capitol hill today for mitt romney. it was a big morning for him after house speaker john boehner gave the pneumnee his stamp of
11:25 am
approval. >> it is clear that mitt romney will be our pnenominee. i believe he can put americans back to work and frankly contrast sharply with the failed economic policies of president obama. and i will be proud to support mitt romney and do everything i can to help him win. >> mitt romney wants the president to call the movers displaying the confidence of a presumptive republican nominee. >> that's what i like to say. the president i'm sure wants another four years but the first years didn't go so well. >> romney's swagger might be emboldened by a new poll that shows him holding a slim edge but other polls discount that result. the romney campaign continues to push forward while his team tries to minimize any damages by
11:26 am
the remarks. peter alexander joins me now. mitt romney made these remarks. how are senior campaign aides reacting to this info being reported? >> romney's advisors and supporters say he has hinted at these ideas in the past. they are ideas. that he is trying to flush out right now. none of these are hard and fast policies. it appears the romney campaign like the rest of us were watching the skies today as the shuttle went overhead. as soon as it handed they didn't waste time and put out an e-mail going back to the campaign specifically saying if americans think today's tax day is painful just wait until a second obama term. they put out a couple of surrogates who are attacking president obama trying to redirect for a policy that would
11:27 am
grow government and not jobs. >> peter alexander in washington. the president speaking live from the rose garden. >> but also produces more bio fuels and fuel efficient cars, more solar powered and wind power and other sources of clean renewable energy. this strategy is not just the right thing to do for long term economic growth but the way to reduce our dependence on foreign oil right now, it's the right way to put people to work right now and the right way to stop spikes in gas prices that we put up every year. obviously rising gas prices means a rough ride for a lot of families when you're trying to get to school, work, do some grocery shopping you have to be able to fill up that gas tank. there are families in certain
11:28 am
parts of the country that have no choice but to drive 50 or 60 miles to get to the job. so when gas prices go up it's like an additional tax that comes right out of your pocket. that's one of the reasons we passed the payroll tax cut and made sure it extended so the average american is getting the extra $40 in every paycheck right now. but i think everybody understands that there are no quick fixes to this problem. there are politicians who say if we drilled more than gas prices would come down right away but they don't say we have been drilling more. under my administration america is producing more oil than at any time in the past eight years. we have quadrupled the number of operating rigs to a record high. we have added enough new line to circle the earth and then some. the problem is we use more than
11:29 am
20% of the world's oil and we only have 2% of the proven oil reserves. if we drilled every square inch of this country right now we would still have to rely on other countries for their oil and that means we pay more in the pump every time there is instability in the middle east. that's what is happening right now. it's those global trends that are affecting gas prices. so even as we are tackling issues of supply and demand, as we are looking at the long term in terms of how we can-can structurally make ourselves less reliant on foreign oil we still need to work extra hard to protect consumers from factors that should not effect the price of a barrel of oil and that includes doing everything we can to ensure that an irresponsible few aren't able to hurt
11:30 am
consumers by illegally manipulating or rigging the energy markets for their own gain. we can't afford a situation where speculators artificially manipulate markets bye-b buying oil and driving prices higher. we can't afford a situation where some speculator kz reap millions while millions of american families get the short end of the stick. that's not the way the market should work. for anyone who thinks this cannot happen think back to how enron traders manipulated the price of electricity. the good news is my administration has taken several actions to step up oversight of oil markets and close dangerous loopholes that were allowing some traders to operate in the shadows. we closed the so-called enron
11:31 am
loop hole. in the wall street reform law we said for the first time that federal regulators will make sure no single trader can buy such a large position in oil that they could easily manipulate the market on their own. i point out that anybody pledging to roll back reform would also roll back this vital consumer protection along with it. i have asked attorney general holder to work with chairman of the federal trade commission and other enforcement agencies to make sure that acts of manipulation, fraud or other illegal activity are not behind increases in the price that consumers pay at the pump. so today we're announcing new steps to strengthen oversight of energy markets, things we can do
11:32 am
administratively we are doing. and i call on congress to pass a package of measures to crack down on illegal activity and hold accountable those who manipulate the market for private gain. and be specific. first, congress should provide immediate funding to put more cops on the beat to monitor activity in energy markets. this funding would upgrade technology so surveillance and enforcement officers aren't hand strung by tools the ones the traders are using. we should strengthen protection and not gut them. these markets have expanded significantly. chairman said imagine if the nfl quadrupled the number of teams but didn't increase the number of refs. you would end up with havoc on
11:33 am
the field and it would diminish the game. it wouldn't be fair. that's part of what is going on in a lot of these markets. so we have to properly resource enforcement. second, congress should increase the civil and criminal penalties for illegal energy market manipulation and other illegal activities. my plan would toughen ten fold and impose these penalties not just for violation but every day a violation occurs. third, congress should give the agency responsible for overseeing oil markets new authority to protect against volatility by making sure the traders can post appropriate margins which means that they have the money to make good on their trades. congress should do all of this right away. a few weeks ago congress had the chance to stand up for families paying an extra premium at the pump. congressional republicans voted
11:34 am
to keep spending billions of americans hard earned tax dollars on more unnecessary subsidies. here is a chance to actually do something that will protect consumers by increasing oversight of energy markets. that should be something that everybody no matter the party should agree with. in the meantime my administration will take no executive actions to better analyze and investigate trading activities in energy marketers and more quickly implement the tough consumer protections under wall street reform. let me close by saying none of these steps by themselves will bring gas prices down overnight. but it will prevent market manipulation and make sure we are looking out for american consumers. and in the meantime we are going to keep fur suing on the strategy for american energy to
11:35 am
break the cycle of price spikes. we are going to keep producing more fuel efficient cars. we are going to keep tapping into every source of american made energy. these steps have helped put america on a path to greater energy independence. our dependence on foreign oil has actually decreased each year i have been in office even as the economy has grown. america now imports less than half of the oil we use for the first time in more than a decade. we are less vulnerable than we were but still too vulnerable. we got to continue the hard sustained work on this issue. as long as i'm president we are going to keep placing our bets on america's future, america's workers, america's technology and american made energy. that's how we are going to solve this problem once and for all. thank you very much everybody.
11:36 am
>> did director sullivan resign? >> we have been listening to the president talking live from the rose garden getting a few questions shouting out to him. the reporters there in the rose garden. the president turned his back and left after laying out this five part plan. basically the president is saying to get a tighter strategy going forward with lowering the problem with our oil markets it would request immediate funding to put more cops on the beat overseeing world markets. substantially increasing civil and criminal penalties, empowering the cft to raise requirements and expand access to the data. cristin, we heard you yelling out to the president questions. he didn't answer you. we will talk about what the question was you wanted to get answered. this top five plan that the
11:37 am
president is talking about with the energy issue with the country, the gas prices president obama saying it is not a problem that was created overnight. this isn't something we can solve overnight but finger pointing directly to the energy speculators that are driving the gas numbers. >> you heard the president calling on congress to pass a series of measures that he believes would help get this problem with speculators under control. of course, every year when we see gas prices go up one of the biggest concerns is manipulation of the oil markets by speculators. this is an election year. so all of the things likely won't get passed. you have speaker boehner saying this is a gimmick and this is not going to do anything to basically lower the price of gas. as you know president obama has really been hammered by republicans for the high price of gas so in some ways he continues to answer that criticism by holding these types
11:38 am
of events. today coming up with this $52 million plan to try to increase federal oversight of the oil markets. it is very unlikely that we will see any of those proposals make their way through congress at least this year. >> the question you wanted to get answered? >> we asked if director sullivan of the secret service should resign. there is a huge scandal which involves prostitutes allegedly 11 members of the secret service and more than five members of the military. so this is something that has been on all of our minds right now particularly the american people. they want answers. they want to know how this could have happened. a lot of different agencies trying to getd to the bottom of this investigating this incident. one question is should director sullivan resign. this is not first problem we have seen with the secret service. in 2009 the reality tv couple
11:39 am
were allowed to gain entrance in a state dinner even though they didn't have an invitation. there were questions that arose about the management of this secret service. a lot of people today wondering if it's not time for some sort of change in management. representative peter king was asked about this earlier today. he is one of the people who will be starting an investigation into this matter. he said it's not time for that just yet. he did answer the question. as you saw president obama not answering those questions about director sullivan today. >> we will be talking more about that this hour. cristin welker on the rose garden lawn. i want to take you back to our conversation about mitt romney and his comments to president obama in an abc interview to start packing. mitt romney also picking up the endorsement of house speaker
11:40 am
bane k john boehner. my thanks to all three of you for your patience this morning. we have had a rock them sock them hour. i want to start with you. this message start packing. is this a more aggressive side of romney we may see more of? >> i think one of the things that governor romney wants to do is combat the impression that president obama is likely to win this election. we saw a poll out yesterday that showed about six in ten americans thought obama was likely to win. he wants to make sure people think it is going to be a competitive race. i think that is one of the reasons we heard that rather confident assertion on his part in that interview. >> it's not truly all doom and gloom as we look at a different set of political polls for the
11:41 am
president. we have the daily tracking poll that looks very tight. and then the other matchup from cnn and then this reuters poll giving the president good leads. what can the president do to counter attack? >> the fact of the matter is this is going to be a competitive race. i have said that for the last year that this is going to be a tight race and it's going to come down to doing what he has been doing which is to continue to fight for jobs in this country. it's going to come down to who the voters trust the most on helping the economy recover. if he keeps going in the direction he does i think he is doing a good job and will get reelected because they will trust him and not going back to the policies that created the mess he whose been getting us out of. >> of course there is the natural tightening. the comments, though, that mitt romney made concerning hud, the department of education on immigration coming from the
11:42 am
governor during what he thought was just for the ears of big donors only in florida. do you think he needs to be more transparent in big speeches because it is always about the economy. there are other issues. >> of course. i think that a lot of these positions will continue to evolve as time goes on. the governor knows there is a long distance between being a candidate for the president and introducing the policy. i think he is going to really talk to americans about how he is going to put them back to work. we have 12.7 of them who aren't working right now and millions more working in part time jobs without benefits. he is going to talk about how he is going to lower bas prices and have an energy policy to make it easier to go to the pump and not pay as much money. >> thanks for joining me. i appreciate it.

agents who are specially trained to repel attacks on presidential motorcades. they accompany all presidential motorcades and then three members of the counter sniper team, folks you see on buildings with rifles scouting for potential threats. so you have a mixture of uniform division and special agents involved. that ratchets this up and makes it more serious especially when you add in the supervisors. you throw in the military people and you have as many as 20 and possibly more who may have been involved in this. i should point out that i'm told this is a small fraction of the total secret service contingent down there in columbia. that may have been as many as 160 people. to have senior agent supervisors implicated is pretty serious. >> we are going to learn more and more as they continue to dig
11:49 am
deeper into this. nbc national correspondent, thank you. as i said we have a former secret service agent, former maryland senatorial candidate to talk more about this. i want to get this out there because nbc has obtained this memo sent to agents. this is an excerpt. it says our job, our responsibility is to the president, the american people and the individuals that we are entrusted to protect. it is imperative to always act personally and professionally in a matter that recognizes the seriousness and consequence of our mission. when you hear a statement like this and asking if the director should resign do you think sullivan should step down? >> that is not for me to say. he is saying we are guise, we take full responsibility. i'm actively as involved in this as everyone. a lot of folks are my friends, family members, in the scandal.
11:50 am
family is not involved in the prostitution component but assisting in the investigation. secret service has been my informal family for 12 year, up until i left for the senate run. i think right now he's doing the right things. >> is this something more indicative of a culture that exists in the secret service? you served with them for 12 years. there's a large contingent that went to enjoy themselves while in colombia. i think it would be naive of people to think this is the first time any advanced detail has gone out before in lieu of the president's arrival to blow off steam. what is the responsibility, what are you told about what your mission is when you go into an advanced detail like that, knowing that you're supposed to be there protecting the president but let something like this happen? how can that happen? >> my 12-year career i did 27 foreign presidential trips, three of which i was the lead
11:51 am
advance, in charge. it's never happened before. do the math, 200 people per trip, 27 trips. i have never seen this ever. i never had to send anyone home for this. i'm not saying it's never happened. i'm saying they've nevin been caught on my trip. i've never seen this as being an endemic problem. this is an embarrassment. i've said there's no way to square this circle. as being endemic of the secret service in general and a culture of partying, absolutely not. absolutely not. not the agency i knew. >> the pinnacle of service is to be on the president's detail. >> right. very few guys get there. very few. >> dan, thank you for waiting for us. you rolling with the punches here as well. former secret service agent, current maryland senatorial candidate. come here. congresswoman gabby giffords. one will face off june 12th. ron barber a former aide to gabby and injured in the shooting that nearly claimed her life. you've got a lot of financial support going into the contest. no challengers on the democratic side. blessing from the former congresswoman. does incumbency play an advantage for you in all of this? >> well, not for me personally, because i'm not an incumbent yet. but i hope to be an incumbent june 12th, after the general election. the main issue for me is to let the arizona and southern arizona voters know what i stand for, and the issues, as i go around the district, are about jobs, the economy, getting people back to work, helping them stay in their homes, preventing foreclosure. and i talked to a lot of seniors about medicare, social security, and they're very concerned about the proposals that have been made in congress that would devastate those programs, those safety net programs that they rely on. those are issues i'm batting on.
11:56 am
i believe whoever my republican opponent is going to be will have quite a different view on these matters. >> one thing that you have done personally is put out a call for civility within the contest moving forward. how is that going within the community itself? >> i think the community -- after the shooting january 8th came together in most incredible way. the unity was everywhere. compassion, kindness, goodwill and prayers surrounded all of us who were wounded and those who lost loved ones. that tone is very much present. that's the tone i believe people want to have set in this campaign. some people tell me i'm naive to think we can do this. we're going to take the high roading make sure we have a civil and respectful campaign, we're going to stick to issues, not going to personalize. we doesn't know what's going happen from the other side. already there have been negative, misleading attacks on me. we'll stick on the issues, social security, medicare, jobs,
