marco rubio fueling speculation of a mitt-marco bumper sticker for president. >> looking forward to help in any way i can to let the american people the choice they have between the way we're going now and the way we should be going. >> the man romney and his eventual vp pick will be vicing in november, president obama, is expected to lock up his own party's nomination today. joining me for the political power panel, jenn soccy, former deputy communications director for president obama, amanda turkell and the former communications director for rick santorum and advise tore to the bush cheney campaign. after all the intros i want to start with you. the question today not whether mitt romney wins but how he wins and the nature of this victory. >> i would be shocked if mitt romney doesn't sweep the states
11:01 am
today. it is interesting that tonight he will be giving a speech not in any of those five states but in new hampshire where he is expected to try to kick off the general election and move beyond the primary now that rick santorum has dropped out and newt gingrich really isn't doing much, more than $4 million in debt and so he is turning his eyes towards the ultimate prize which is in november in defeating barack obama. >> so as we take a look at a poll from new hampshire, take a peek at the numbers as you talk about that, amanda. we can show everybody exactly how people are faring with barack obama against mitt romney with president obama leading 51%. robert, i want to lead to you. as amanda points out, romney, moving on basically, not doing any work in the states that are voting today. that work is already done. delivering the speech in new hampshire titled a better america begins tomorrow, and a new wmur poll as we just showed you there shows the president leading in new hampshire, so with all of this coming together, is it signaling a bad start for romney when he was not
11:02 am
leading in the neighboring state to massachusetts? >> well, i am not too sure about that. let's remember, the election is still roughly about four or five months away. governor romney still has a lot of ground to make up and the question becomes whether or not this race will tighten after labor day and i have every sneaking suspicion it will and too many reasons why. number one, the economy is still the number one driving issue on voter's minds regardless of whether it is new hampshire or not and secondly with all the due respect to new hampshire, new hampshire is not going to decide who the next president is going to be. it really is going to be the battle ground states of ohio, pennsylvania, florida, michigan and even to a certain degree colorado and maybe even virginia. that's where we need to take a look and focus whether or not the romney campaign is going to be able to make up ground with the two key constituents that i mentioned, women and hispanics, and i think he will. >> you bring up women and h hispani hispanics.
11:03 am
is mitt romney stumping with marco rubio, the florida senator, we see him in pennsylvania and when he was asked about rubio and his experience, enough to not vice president, here is how he answered. >> i don't think i have any comments on qualifications for individuals to serve in various positions in government at this stage. that's something that we're going to be considering down the road as we consider various potential vice presidential nominees. >> marco rubio stepped up and said he won't talk about it further than he had before. the rubio politician himself, is he the dynamic, kacharismatic h needs or potentially a soft target and doesn't have the experience necessary for the job people say he needs some. >> as you touched on, every four years we have this dramatic flir station with the vice presidential contenders, how do they look at each other and interact and even though the american people history shows cares most about what people
11:04 am
stand for at the top of the ticket. if you delve deep you are into marco rubio's record and recent statements, what you will find is he has been a champ i don't know of the alternative to the dream act which the "new york times" says is the dream act without the dream. he recently said that george w. bush was a fantastic president and polls have shown that he may even hurt mitt romney in florida, so we have awhile to go. we all know we're going to be following this closely and talking about it for the upcoming months, but there are a few interesting facts when you delve deeper in. >> it is a parlor game and people like to pick it out who will be number 2. president obama expected to clinch his party's nod, the re-election and the super pac supporting him are poised to air the new tv ads in three swing states. is this the first big move, the big major move in stepping up the efforts to compete with the gop super pacs and the ad war taking place in. >> no question about it. this is the obama and the democrats testing the waters if you will. number one, testing the waters to see what message will
11:05 am
resonate with the american people and testing the organizational skills in terms of ex be cuting this big campaign buy. this is the things almost like exercising and warming up for the big day. there is no question about it that the super pacs on the republicans side are better organized, better funded and this is the president's re-election team's way of testing the waters to see what works and what doesn't work. >> the president will be in north carolina today talking about student loans. both sides trying to get them while they're young and going to talk about money and the fact of the matter is student loans are out of control in this country as well as the cost of college tuition. however, the republican national committee released this ad ahead of the president's arrival. take a look at this. >> a critical election and the democratic party's director resigned because of the growing rumor that he harassed a co-worker and that the party covered it up. >> so the gop clearly depicting the president trying to paint him as a commander in chief, not
11:06 am
effectively controlling his own party and tying scandals to him. can republicans successfully put a president who is known for offensive moves on the defense instead? >> well, look, thomas, i think this strikes me as grasping at straws a bit. i think what the people of north carolina care about is how they're going to be able to afford to send their kids to college, how we're going to take care of military families which is also an issue the president has spoken about repeatedly in north carolina, and i just don't think that anyone there is sitting at their kitchen table talking about the state party director. they want to know what he is going to do to help middle class families prosper and flourish. >> great to see all three of you today. thank you. >> thank you. >> we'll move on this morning and take our discussion now with hogan gidly, the national communications director for the santorum campaign and a lot of people want to know when is rick santorum going to come out and endorse and is the person going to be mitt romney? do you have any answers for us? >> well, i i can say that the
11:07 am
two have worked together to try to come up with a time to meet and have the conversation. no guarantee in endorsements coming out of that meeting. i know that rick santorum wants to have a conversation with governor romney and have a frank and honest discussion about where the country needs to go and the issues that need to be pushed in this campaign and the general election, and we'll see what comes out of it. it is all in due time. there is a long way to go before any endorsement will be given out, but they have to have a frank and honest discussion and figure out where we go from there. >> obviously mitt romney would like to get that endorsement, the senator since spending the campaign has nothing but time on his hands. for the two not to fit their schedules together, at least mitt romney to find out how he can meet with the senator, would lead people to believe there is still a lot of bad blood that exists there. >> it is not that. any campaign ends. have you a lot of loopholes to close, and rick santorum has been just about as busy off the
11:08 am
campaign trail as he was when he was on it and mitt romney is out there running in all of these states still so he has a busy schedule, too, but we work to get them together and they will have a meeting. they will have a discussion. we'll see what comes out of it. >> is this the potential because newt gingrich offered or asked rick santorum to drop out back in january, and throw his endorsement behind him, is this all in an effort to continue to be a thorn in mitt romney's side, the eventual number that he needs is 1,144 and he is well on his way there and newt gingrich doesn't have a chance. is this just a way to continue to needle at mitt romney? >> absolutely not. this whole process from the get go is about one thing, accomplishing one goal, and that was to defeating barack obama. rick santorum has pledged to do that, to work as hard as he could, get behind the nominee, and push, push president obama out of the white house and elect a republican to the office. this is in no way an effort to needle mitt romney at all.
11:09 am
obviously rick santorum and newt gingrich are frenlds. they have been friends for a long time, but that's not what's going on here. they need to meet and have a conversation and rick santorum finished this campaign with virtually zero debt, so he is not beholden to anybody and doesn't need money to pop around out there. he doesn't have to come in grofling and say please retire my debt and let me do this and i will do this for you. he doesn't need that. that's not the kind of guy he is. he is principled and going to stand on those principles and convictions and push forth the message that folks in 11 states voted for and he will have to have that conversation and they will have it and i am sure they will have a meeting of the minds and come out with something after that. in the meantime, you know, governor romney is doing his thing and campaigning and rick santorum is doing his, and working on building coalitions at the grassroots level and we'll need that if we want to beat barack obama in the fall and that's something rick santorum is working on every
11:10 am
day. >> hogan, great to see you this morning. thank you. >> thanks. you, too. >> absolutely. the city of sanford is in limbo after city commissioner voted to reject bill lee's resignation. he is the man that did not charge george zimmerman after the murder of unarmed teen trayvon martin. commissioners say they're waiting on the results of a federal investigation and that could take months. >> a man who is a medal of valor winner. this is the chief that would take a bullet for anyone in this room. i don't think we have people sitting up here with that i understand could of character. >> kerry sanders joins me from florida with more of the details. explain the detailed logic behind the fact they did not want to accept this resignation and the new developments about the reaction of trayvon martin's paem and the people in sanford to the fact that bill lee would potentially still be on the job. >> those who saw bill lee
11:11 am
handing in his resignation say this was not just a resignation but rather a forced resignation and that the city manager here had told him either you resign or you're going to be fired. there was supposed to be an independent investigation requested by the city commission here. they thought there was going to be a long drawn out process here. yet they were told to come to the commission chambers and they were being told he was handing in his resignation. they did not like that and surprisingly some of those that supported his suspension, remember, he that be on suspension about a month, stepping down, had a big turn around and said no way are we going to accept this resignation so the vote was 3-2 he would not be resigning. they just decided they're not going to accept it. so it was an interesting turn of events while at the same time there were those who believed that it is the police department here that botched the whole initial investigation in this and led to the protest that is
11:12 am
led to the special prosecutor and then ultimately led to the charges. natalie jackson is one of the attorneys representing the trayvon martin family. this is what she had to say about the decision yesterday not to accept the resignation of the police chief here. >> i think he should lose his job because there has to be strong leader sh ip in sanford. it has to be strong leadership that people trust. >> so here we go, a waiting game for the city commissioner because now they say they're going to wait for the federal investigation. there is a civil rights investigation that's under way. that will take a long time. back to you. >> kerry, george zimmerman free on bail. what do we know about where he is and what he is doing now? >> george zimmerman came out of jail. he was wearing a bullet proof vest. his attorney and his family felt that was the best to do because he has had death threats and since he has been released so many more. he posted the $150,000 bond with the help of his family, and he

is now in hiding. while the authorities, the local law enforcement with the sheriff's department can track his every movement because they have a gps ankle monitor on him, he will remain in hiding according to his lawyer until there is a trial and that could be more than a year away. >> kerry sanders in sanford. thank you. another member of the military tied to the secret service scandal in columbia and an agent connected to the white house. plus, a couple of lawmakers want a meeting with wal-mart's ceo about the bribery allegations in mexico. congressman elijah cummings is one of them and joins me next to talk about both investigations. that's straight ahead. c'mon dad!

prostitutes at the center of the secret service scandal actually sue the agents. a lawyer for one of the alleged prostitutes in the case telling columbian radio his client is not only willing to cooperate with u.s. officials but that a lawsuit is possible. this is a 12th member of the military now tied to the scandal, defense secretary leon panetta says all accused personnel are under review. >> if the investigators find there have been violations, violations of the code of military justice, violation of the standards i just talked about by those individuals will be held accountable. >> the white house it says it it spoke to team members in columbia before the president's arrival and found no wrongdoing. >> there is no indication that any member of the white house advance team engaged in any improper or conduct or behavior. >> however, the top republican on the senate judiciary committee wants more detail and has a roster of unanswered questions.
11:18 am
democratic congressman elijah cummings joins me now and talk about the news one of the prostitutes is considering suing. do you feel this is going to get a lot worse before it gets better? >> it is hard to say. certainly the laws are what they are, and if columbia has laws that says that folks can be sued under certain circumstances as these, then there is not very much we can do about that. we'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it. >> sir, among the questions that senator chuck grassley wants the white house to answer now is how long did this review take in reference to the internal inhouse review that the white house did? was the pentagon involved? were hotel records reviewed? he wants these answered by thursday. the white house is saying that none of their staffers have been found of any wrongdoing, so is that the case closed answer from the white house and will there be a sense of an unwillingness to share information that puts the white house even a rock and a hard place? >> i don't know exactly what the white house will do or won't do.
11:19 am
what we do know is that their preliminary investigations had made it clear that no white house folks were involved in these kind of activities and the secret service has confirmed they have gotten no credible evidence to that extent, so i would think that maybe this is like sort of a fishing expedition but certainly if the information comes out counter so what i just said, i am sure it will be properly addressed not only by senator grassley but our committee, but i don't anticipate that just based on what we know so far. >> my colleague asked chicago mayor and former white house chief of staff rahmy man he will is he was confident about this being handled correctly. this was his answer. >> am i confidentiality, yes, i am confident because already heads rolled that needed to and i also want you to remember there are good men and women in the secret service. don't you in the media paint a broad brush. good people there.
11:20 am
they're going to hold people that did wrong accountable as they should. built to ask real questions as it relates to the president's security and the professionalism as their operation. >> sir, so he is saying don't paint this with a broad brush. is there concern, though, this scandal will taint the white house and the democrats when they put together that with the gsa spending scandal again not trying to paint with a broad brush, but having these specific scandals back-to-back they're going to add up does the mud stick? >> no, i don't see any mud, and i don't see any sticking. the fact is i think we had some bad actors in both instances, certainly with the secret service we're going to find out by may 1st, but all indications are so far that we had some bad actors, but rahm emanuel is absolutely right. i know a number of our secret service folks. i have dealt with them for years. i can tell you they are some of the best folk that is we have
11:21 am
working for us, and i think we have to be very careful that we don't judge anybody by any group by its weakest link. these folks are very proud. they're very professional. they're outstanding at what they do. i think we will again as the secret service is going to be harder on itself than we could ever be, and they're doing a thorough investigation and i don't know what more they can do with regard to investigating this matter. >> sir, while i have you here, i want to ask you about the allegations right now against wall plart and the fact it may have bribes to speed the he is pangs prsz and you want a face-to-face meeting with the ceo michael duke about the "new york times" and its report. what specifically do you want to ask him and why do you want to do that face-to-face? >> well, we want to know exactly what the company's position was with regard to all of this. as you know, after quite a few years and subsequent to investigations by the times,
11:22 am
"new york times," they then decided that they were going to self report which basically self reported criminal activity. we want to know exactly who was involved in this and why, and keep in mind they also are responsible for reporting information to the sec because the shareholders are involved, so it is our business to look into it. of course we'll be looking working very closely with justices so that we don't interfere with what they're doing. the congress has a did you it i and we'll look into it as we should. >> thank you so much for joining me. i appreciate it. >> thank you. >> the pentagon is beefing up the spy ranks with a new intelligence agency. it is the defense clandestine service expected to focus on iran and china as the iraq and afghan wars wrap up. the dcs would make use of existing agents and assets and work closely with the cia to track emerging threats overseas.

11:34 am
to keep the rates low. this is what we think congress should do now. it will cost them an extra $1,000 over the life of the loan if congress fails to act so the president is out there because this is the people's business. we need to get this done. >> let's talk about the numbers again. the white house estimates the 7.4 million students affected, given how arj the younger voting population played in the president's 2008 win, how important is it to the president's swing state tour today and tomorrow and also, cecilia, to remind the students they invested with the president then they need to stick with him, especially when so many kids are having trouble finding their first job out of college? >> the approach here is really about students and about our economic future as a nation. we want to be competitive in this new global economy. we have jobs online and created jobs for 25 straight months and we have to make sure they're prepared for the jobs coming online. this is about their future, the family's economic future and the country's economic future.
