11:00 am
pawlenty, the former minnesota governor joining mitt romney. appeared that they had a good chemistry and rob portman who spent time here with his wife and ann romney and governor romney and seeing paul ryan, scott walker. and we have seen ron johnson, the senator of this state, as well, spending some time with governor romney, too. thomas? >> certainly star power in wisconsin this morning. we'll check in later. peter alexander, thanks so much. want to bring in our political power panel. we have april ryan and white house correspondent for american urban radio. david goodfriend, a democratic strategist and former staffer to president clinton. david, scott walker has said that romney should pick paul ryan as a running mate. interesting there, though, as peter was pointing out that the governor did the introductions there. do you think, though, that he is going to be potentially in a run now? i mean, walker considered potentially this rising star.
11:01 am
do you think he should be somebody in the romney camp's contention for vp? >> i think a lot of people vying for that position. but you know, i grew up and went to school a few miles from where mr. romney is standing right now in wisconsin and i can tell you that the closing of the gm plant outside of janesville was devastating to that part of the state and the problem that mitt romney and governor walker and paul ryan all have in upper midwest is they all were against the bailout of the american automakers that turned out to be a huge success up and down the supply chain in places like wisconsin and ohio and michigan. and so, what they're trying to do is make this an argument about whether or not president obama can lead us in to the future when in reality people in that part of the world including voters in wisconsin who prefer president obama over mitt romney are saying that actually they fared better under president obama's policies. that's the challenge that these guys face. now, i'll only point out one
11:02 am
other thing which is in ohio where the very same policies put to a vote, same policies to recall scott walker, voters in ohio voted to overturn the policies. so if you look at what people prefer in terms of policy, not so much the person walker versus barrett, that seems to be favoring democrats and the president in the upper midwest. >> april, we want to welcome in hogi ridley joining the conversation. hogan, talking about wisconsin today, romney's campaign with a new web video using the president's words to hit him on the economy just like this morning in wisconsin. take a listen. >> of course the economy isn't where it needs to be. >> okay.
11:03 am
so as we have been talking about janesville which is where mitt romney is today, an unemployment rate higher than the average in wisconsin, but as david just pointed out, hogan, this is an area greatly improved from a high of unemployment of 16% in '09. just remind everybody the state did not vote for a republican since '84 so for voters there, why rock the boat? what does mitt romney have to offer them? >> that's a great question and polling shows right now as you alluded to i think in the tease that voters vote to keep walker in place and those same voters also overwhelmingly said they would support president obama in the presidential and mitt romney can't get too tied in a lost cause state. there's time to figure it out and people to talk to but he has the right crowd around him right now and if the recent election with governor walker and the
11:04 am
support of the folks from the contiguous states don't buoy him, cut bait and go to another state. >> it remains to see how it plays out. april, let's switch gears to immigration and "the new york times" reporting mitt romney was expected to roll out the immigration platform on thursday and preempted by the president. has the president finally found an issue to put romney on the defensive and put himself back on the offensive line coming to campaign conversation? >> well, i'm going to say this. mitt romney according to one of your competitor networks, they came out with a poll saying that mitt romney fared better on immigration than president obama but obama beat in almost everything else but the economy but you have to remember. for especially these last ten, 12 years immigration is a major issue and it's been a big problem so this is an issue that they -- that both sides of the aisle have to deal with but to be honest with you, it's to bring in the immigration debate
11:05 am
right now, it's very political to pull the hispanic vote to either side. >> all right. so remind everybody what mitt romney had to say. he has been asked by this reporters peppering him since the announcement by the president. and mitt romney was asked yesterday whether he would repeal the president's executive order in and for young illegal immigrants. take a listen to his response. >> would you repeal this order if you became president? >> well, let's step back and look at the issue. >> would you repeal this? >> well, it would be overtaken by events, if you will, by virtue of a long-term solution. >> would you leave this in place while you worked out a long-term solution or would you just repeal it? >> we'll look at that setting as we reach that. >> all right. bob schieffer there doing the very best to get an answer. >> good reporter. >> hogan, i'll ask it of david, as well, should he give a straight yes or no?
11:06 am
>> he should or at least begin to give more details in to what he would do and bob did a pretty good job there of trying to pin him down on that. it was a brilliant move by the president the past week putting mitt romney in a box. if he says, of course, yes, that i stand with the president on this, he is going to alienate the conservative base. saying he's opposed to it, he loses the hispanic vote and maybe forever for the republican party. that's a serious issue to face. i think eventually both these candidates, barack obama and mitt romney begin to have to lay out some more specifics in to what they would do in this arena and of course immigration reform is a serious issue. very complex. even back when reagan was president and then mitt romney didn't have to answer that except i'm going to secure the border. now the president one upped him and mitt romney has to come up with a comprehensive plan that doesn't alienate the base. right now not sure if the
11:07 am
president is on strong footing relates to the naturalization of a mass group of citizens. >> david, let's get you on the record. yes or no. romney should have a straightforward answer on that and then your take on the president can combat the time of his campaign. >> yes. mitt romney should have a straight answer on this. it's a basic issue in this campaign. as for the president's actions, he's acting within the bound of law and frustrated with congress that simply will not tackle the problem and he's doing the best he can exec by executive order under existing law. president reagan, he negotiated with democrats and came up with an immigration reform plan that republican party in power today is not willing to compromise and driving them straight off a cliff. >> april, really quickly, though, as we talk about how it could push not only mitt romney to get on record about specifics as hogan points out for what he needs to state as a campaign specific on immigration, does it
11:08 am
also put him in a position to see marco rubio as that much higher on the short list for vice president? >> well, there are a lot of people on the short list for vice president. marco -- you know, marco rubio i think would be great but you have to look at the vice presidential picture as a whole. someone who's not just a single issue person and historically governors have been great for becoming presidents. this nation we have seen that. but you also have to remember there are other issues and, yes, ef the immigration issue and security issues. economic issues. but you have other people out there like portman who can -- who's touched almost every facet of government. and he's been in government. he's been in congress. he's been in the -- you have got several people who are just as appealing and not just because of the immigration issue but rubio is a good looking candidate, though, it were just on immigration.
11:09 am
>> thanks to all three of you for this today. mitt romney wrapped up in wisconsin a moment ago and traveling on to ohio with his bus tour. late they are hour, i'll speak to a young woman impacted by the president's new policy and ask you to stick around for that. president obama is in mexico right now for the g-20 summit. big meetings on the president's agenda and talk about the fiscal crisis in europe and the fate of greece after yesterday's historic elections there. a live report coming your way next. plus, the prosecution wrapping um its case in the jerry sandusky sexual abuse trial today. why one charge was dropped and a possible new strategy for the defense. wait until you hear this. are s, you'll get lost in an all-beef hot dog world. what was i supposed to wish for? why am i wearing a bow-tie? where did i leave my bicycle? after all, when you're enjoying the beefiest,

the u.s. is holding up relatively well come paired with the rest of the world even than china. europe as you said dodged a bullet. the least worst results in the election. they run out of cash roughly in july. spain is an epicenter with borrowing rates above 7%. the real issue is can the europeans as a continent carve out a deal in which they become more tightly knit, not just in monetary terms but political and fiscal terms? that is the big question and the only solution that drives them towards some resolution of this crisis. >> and again, people here at home need to understand this impact because of the euro zone being our largest trading partner. i think people are surprised to know that the eu and gdp is larger than that. >> collectively, yes. >> of the states but that obviously has a big effect and tie to the domestic economy
11:15 am
here. >> china is more dependent upon europe than we are. we have mexico and canada, all of asia. i wouldn't say we're immune to their problems. i think we may be slightly less vulnerable but if we had a catastrop catastrophe, if the euro were to break up completely, that would be like us in 2008. so this is big. this is important. right now they're limping along. >> right. >> the g-20, you will talk about that in a minute, trying to carve out a language to talk about solutions but they need to get far more aggressive to deal with the problem. some form of austerity to stem the tide here because we're by no means out of the woods here. >> talking about the g-20, the president is expected to speak with german chancellor angela merkle and their role and that's going to continue to be their role, to have the broadest shoulders, right?
11:16 am
>> they're the strongest economy in europe. everybody is considerably weaker. they have more money than anybody in europe. do german citizens want to finance what has been the southern europe, the peripheral states of portugal, greece, and ireland and may need another bailout. so the german people have to decide how much integration they want and willing to pay for it. remember when the soviet union dissolved, west germany effectively bought out east germany and they paid for that for over a decade so it's hard to know whether the germans having done it with the brethren will be willing to do it with everybody else on the continent. >> thanks so much, ron. >> thanks. in an hour, president obama meeting face to face with russian president vladimir putin. ahead of the g-20 summit. this is for the first time that they'll come face to face since putin regained the presidency. at issue, rush why's role in the ongoing crisis in syria. nbc chief white house

11:18 am
playing to putin's ego. it is tough and clearly putin trying to send a message by putt ougt that announcement before this bilateral even takes place so, you know, i think expectations are rather low for what can get accomplished at this first face to face. >> the expectations are low but if there's a cold shoulder maybe from putin putting it toward the administration, does president obama then say, because, you know, everybody that watches the u.n. and follows it knows that russia and china are large obstacles. does the president say forget russia and china? >> well, i don't think they're ready to fully throw the russians and the chinese aside on this, considering first of all with china how important of an economic partner they are and with russia, you know, i think one of the pieces of leverage which could be interesting here is does putin want to deal with this american president or the
11:19 am
next american president? thinking about the rhetoric of mitt romney used about russia and putin in particular. so, that might be interesting there, how much of that is behind the scenes leverage for this president to say to putin, you know, hey, you need to give a little bit on this or you're going to make it easier for the world to sort of rise up against you, even in american politics where you have had two straight presidents try really hard to work with putin. thinking back to former president bush and this president of working with this current russian regime of putin and medvedev. i'm not sure if that's leverage but the other big issue is what's happened in europe and the president has added a one on one meeting with german chancellor angela merkle for this afternoon and that could be the message of stability is very important as far as the president's concerned for his own domestic politics. >> great to see you. thank you, sir. appreciate it. coming up jailhouse phone calls that put george zimmerman

paypal account on a website. so as the money is growing, they're discussing some of that money and, of course, discussing some other things, as well. the process here is that the prosecutors say that these recorded conversations reveal a conspiracy between the two of them to lie to the court about their assets. because the judge has to know how much money they have to set the bond. in this case, he set bond for $150,000. but after not revealing that they had more than $135,000 in this account but then later discovering it, judge was like, wait a second. you can't lie to the court. brought george zimmerman back in. who's still in jail and now brought, well, the prosecutors have brought shelly zimmerman, his wife, up on perjury charges. she was in and out of jail in about 37 minutes. but these phone calls all go to the heart of that. we're listening to them trying to put them in context, trying to look at what's really the most important part.

wendy, great to have you here. according to the national institutes for health, because i want more of the personality disorder and what they're talking about as john reports will come up in court, so this disorder is a condition where people react in a very emotional or dramatic way that draws attention to themselves. in your attention, how do you think sandusky's lawyers intend to make that defense work given the severity of the charges in this case? >> well, i think the short answer is it's not going to work, thomas. you know, the point that you made that this is a recent contrivance i think is going to immediately cause the jury to be at least dubious about it. in addition, you know, they're really suggesting this is a guy sending love letters to his victims wasn't necessarily abusing them but was ill, in order to have a disorder like this, you really have to behave like that toward all sorts of
11:34 am
people and you can't just send letters like that to little boys. so i don't think the jury is likely to take this in as serious evidence. i think the defense is desperate. this comes across as desperate and i think the jury will think, hey, they have an expert willing to testify to this for money. that's how it feels, why. >> in your experience, has this ever been through profiles of sexual profiles and ever come up in your experience in court before? >> what a good question because, indeed, when you see this kind of behavior, number one, it is typically connected to females, seeing the root word. it's typically tied to woman and it is widely disfavored as offensive to women as a class. that said, when you see sexually aggressive behavior, if you look in the manual, it's not just that you seek attention but
11:35 am
sexualized attention and the defense is going to make a point of that. the problem is you tend to see it from girls who have been sexually victimized as children. if they start acting out for the purpose of gaining attention as teenagers and adults you often see them diagnosed with this disorder because it's an expression of their suffering that they seek affection in all the wrong ways because they have been victimized. i have never seen it used to explain the violent behavior of an offender, never. >> day one of the defense. see how it plays out. attorney and former prosecutor, wendy murphy. thank you for your time. i appreciate it. >> you're welcome. here's other stories. this morning a coroner will perform an autopsy on the body of rodney king. he was found dead sunday at the bottom of his swimming pool in california. in 1991 you recall remember four police officers caught on videotape beating king. the acquittals of the police officers led to the nation's worse race riots.
