he's going where the other guy can't go and he's scored politically. let's bring in chris cillizza and maria. nailing down your base going for the reachables, taking positions that he's kept himself waway frm by the commitments he's made so far. your thoughts, chris. >> well, look, i think on immigration certainly, chris, what you saw was president obama taking advantage of the power of his office. mitt romney can't do something like this. whether we debate whether he would or not, seems like he wouldn't, but we would not, could not. president obama can. hispanics are clearly a pillar of the base. young people. those are and affluent whites are really kind of the three big pillars of the base. his p hispanics have become a little dispirited because the dream act, the dream act didn't pass.
5:01 pm
you could argue president obama didn't focus add much on their priorities as he would have liked. i'm not suggesting it was done for only political reasons, but the calculation behind this twouz say i am your guy and mitt romney -- it boxes mitt romney in. makes it hard for him to take a position. >> i think the safe assumption since june of 2012, it has something to do with politics. they quote obama's strategists see this election as a block by block knife fight to be fought in fewer than a dozen states and decided by a slim majority. this isn't 2008. a top obama campaign adviser said. we just think people are looking at the race the wrong way. the right way, the expansion of the electorate is our base. african-american, hispanics, young people and women. again, my point, you start with the people you think are going to vote for you. you make sure they do. don't let the other guy poach any by taking strong positions.
5:02 pm
they can't be pro-choice cht romney won't go for it because he's locked in with the business crowd. he can't go for marriage equality because he's in with the religious right. i like this kind of politics. >> he is. we'll have to see what he says. there's a major speech that obama and romney will give on friday to a hispanic group so we'll have to see what he says on that. he's also romney trying to make moves into reaching out u to americans. talking to the naacp, he's been meeting with top african-american journalists, so he is trying tmake some move in that. >> that's the middle of the road republicans who are white. >> a tolerant person who want to see somebody who they feel like is tolerant and open. we talked to republicans about this. they are about mitt romney sort of nonposition so far on immigration.
5:03 pm

5:04 pm
of my putting in place a long-term solution. >> would you leave this in place while you worked out a long-term solution or would yu just repeal it? >> we'll look at that setting as we reach that. >> chris cillizza, he just grabs on you like in a cowboy movie and hangs on and won't let go of the guy. he'll well on day three of me being a prosecutor say i will bring the congress a comprehensive immigration. that's the answer. >> well, i think the answer broadly is that they don't want to talk about immigration. they want to talk about the economy and he will pivot as quickly as he can to talking not object immigration and the way you do that if you're mitt romney is you say you know, look, president obama has done what he's done. he basically said what marco rubio said on friday. this is a short-term solution. president obama should have addressed this earlier, but he is not going to dedicate any realtime in talking about
5:05 pm
immigration. i would say, chris, yes, this clearly will help president obama bolster turnout among mispanic, but undecided voters, that 7 to 12% of the people who have not gone one way or the other given how partisan the country is at this point, those folks are not voting on immigration. they are voting if you look at exit polling, the state of the economy. that's who romney is trying to get to. i think that's a short-term calculation because if republic republican. >> if he points out, i would come back with a bit of hisry, the emancipation got us to the 13th, 14th amendment, let's look at a congressman with a tough

primary fight. he's in arizona running against ben quyale, son of dan quyale. he said wait and see what governor romney has to say on this issue. meanwhile, anthorizona republic david swiper released a statement, quote, last week, the president decided to grant amnesty and hand out work permits to illegal immigrants, while 23 million americans remain unemployed. amounts to the duty of american people struggling in the economy while president obama asks to look the other way, i asked him to respect the world law. nice fry. go to the far right. and apparently, boehner's now promised to bring this bill up.

>> move iing off of what he was going to try to do. you see mitch mcconnell sort of throw the ball to mitt romney and say you're the leader of the party. let's figure out where we want to go. it's a hot potato issue, but obviously mitt romney wants to focus on the economy, but the problem is that oftentimes, latinos are just more in line with democratic policies in how they see the government, tax reform and health care. >> this is the old $64,000 question, chris cillizza. he's going after hispanics, gay people, women. the largest group there are in the country. women. just cross cut all females. what's he going to do for white men? the president? >> you know, chris -- >> does he have something in his bag for them? >> it's always been his most difficult demographic group, specifically down scale white men. tolt extent of something, i think it's selling that the

economy is slowly getting better. women, men, hispanics. we'll see. he was not going to win the white vote. >> he needs 40. >> if you think he's going to win, then yes. i don't know the answer to that. it's the $64,000 question. can barack obama in this undecided role, white men, suburban women, that they have a positive answer to are you better off than you were four years ago. that to me is the next five months in the election. >> back to my tough guy question because i was thinking and it's a tough one. i said the ones are your people, the threes -- the hardest people to get. it could be if he would just go to a russ belt thing and biden can help a lot. talk about the fact that the other guys are free markets
