jinah kim has more. >> reporter: after waiting in ago any for much of the week, hundreds of evacuated families in colorado springs learned they no longer have homes. >> we have preliminarily, 346 residents that have been destroyed. >> today, we are going to be incredibly aggressive on this fire. we have the first break in the weather that we've had since we've been here. >> reporter: fire crews now numbering near 1500. >> seven officers with crews ready to go. >> reporter: switched from defense to offense for the first time in four days. >> as far as what's happening up in the forest or the areas we can't get to, it is going to be difficult. it is going to take time. there is going to be smoke and fire for quite some time. >> reporter: for evacuees like stephanie kaufman, this has been an emotional and physical roller coaster. >> we evacuated a couple of days ago due to the smoke. we came back and had to mandatory evac again, came to monument and now monument is on preevacuation.

>> reporter: the waldo canyon fire is one of nine major wildfires burning throughout colorado. there are dozens of other fires burning in other western states. here is your first look at other stories making news. in new york city, police have released dramatic video of a gunman opening fire in what's being described as a random attack. investigators say the man walked up to two people and just started shooting. the victims are wounded but are now in the hospital recovering. the gunman is still on the loose. in texas, tragedy at a construction site where a worer was killed after becoming trapped in theç collapse of a crane north of houston. the crane was hoisting the wall of a new store when the accident happened. the cause is under investigation. finally, in ohio, it is okay to envy these kids. look at them. they were able to beat the heat and have fun doing it after the mayor of columbus ordered a small group of fire hydrants opened under supervision. something normally forbidden but

allowed under the city's operation cooldown. that guy is having fun. the hydrants will likely be turned on again today as the thermometer inches closer to the triple digit mark. i love it. now, for your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist, bill karins, not just heat making headlines thunderstorms rolling through populated, dense areas. if you are getting ready to leave your house from new jersey, greater new york city, connecticut, baltimore, philadelphia, thunderstorms are rolling through this morning. even a few in update new york. from syracuse, just got hit, now heading for albany and upstate. as far as we are going to deal with the worst of it appears to be down around philadelphia and baltimore. we see severe thunderstorm warnings all over the delaware valley. looks like the strongest of those storms is rolling through downtown philadelphia. they will roll through pretty quickly. it looks like baltimore, you have just avoided the worst of it in the downto area.

north of the city is where we are seeing a stronger storm. as far as the new york city area goes, we are not looking at severe storms. a pretty strong line of storms is going to roll through. it looks like it is intensifying as it is over stat continue island. if you are traveling anywhere from new york city north wards including çconnecticut, it loo like over the next half hour, these storms will roll through and the rest of the morning commute should be just fine. another line up here near utica, new york. those will head around interstate 88, albany area. the heat wave is the big story. yesterday, four major cities had their all-time hottest june temperatures, indianapolis, louisville, 103-104, st. louis, 108, little rock, 107. the heat wave is heading east. we are going to see the heat starting to peak in areas of the southeast. what's been different is it wasn't all that humid in areas of the midwt. the heat index is going to be
