opening ceremonies, what was the biggest thing that stood out to you? what was most exciting to see? >> reporter: it was incredible. it's hard to believe this was four hours longs, it had the hollywood pace that each segment didn't seem to last that long. talk about something for everyone, alex. yes, there were live farm animals, they were at the beginning, make the most low key the ceremony actually. then we had elements of james bond, harry potter, mary poppins, mr. bean, all of these touching at times and other times hilarious aspects of british culture and history. i don't know too many people who watched the ceremony that weren't misty eyed at some points. in fact when the camera would focus on certain people in the audience, you would see them too obviously feeling the same way. i think camilla and charles at one point, you could see them with tears in their eyes.

the queen even looked like sheefs tearing up at one point. for me at least and for many, seeing the queen involved in this film they made was jaw dropping. we've never seen anything like that before. brief though it was and i must say very tastefully done as we expected. then there was the music, incorporating the beatles, pink floyd, the young athletes and the fact that a group of young athletes lit the cauldron exposed of copper leaves. it was spectacular is the best word for it. a lot of people were thinking after beijing and the cast of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands, how could you really top that? and there was some worry that maybe this one would be a little bit disappointing after beijing. but it was incredible to see that it wasn't any of that. it really did in many ways you could say top beijing.
6:03 am
it was extremely touching, alex. >> i absolutely agree. i think the good thing is they didn't try to repeat what they did in beijing, they did their own thing and that's what made it so memorable. one of my favorite moments, those gold rings when they lit up and you had gold sparks, it gave me chills, it was beautiful. thanks for recapping it all, have a good one. domestics politics, that's gone overseas, first lady michelle obama is in london. and mitt romney may be happy to leave london behind. duncan, good morning to you. >> good morning, alex, the overriding aim for mits romney will be to show he's a good friend to israel though he probably won't see why he's overseas, the message he'll be a better friend and staunchal lie than president obama.

it's no secret it's been a difficult relationship between president obama and prime minister netanyahu. mitt romney has repeatedly criticized obama for putting too much pressure on israel and being too weak on iran. those are both messages israeli government wants to hear. the white house would point out that yesterday the president signed off on $17 million of military aid for israel. back to mitt romney, there is a personal relationship between him and netanyahu, they first met when they worked at the boston consulting group. barring any missteps will ensure he has a smoother ride in israel than he did here in london. >> we'll wait to see about that. first off though, duncan, what can you tell us about first lady's meeting with samantha cameron. what's scheduled on that front? >> well, i actually have little

thanks for getting up early. >> thanks for having me. >> the white house released its revised budget late yesterday and came on a friday. mid summer, usually when you want to bury some news. is that because it readvised downward its previous forecast? >> alex, a couple of interesting numbers. yes, the headline is that over this year and next year the budget deficit will be about a trillion dollars, this year more than that. that's assuming next year that congress goes ahead and acts the policies that the president is asking for will increase short-term spending. that is not something a lot of people want to hear, a big number like a trillion dollars. another interesting number is that the white house is predicting unemployment to drop to under 8% by around the election time. i'm not sure economists see that the same way. that's sort of a magic number getting below 8%, something the president promised back pushing for the stimulus, if that happens, it could be good news.
