nor is it clear that the republicans haven't already done. we have the 5:00 p.m. deadline. gop leaders are eyeing that. after that, it gets more complicated. you have to get a court involved. so far, he does not sound like a candidate to bow to pressure from the establishment. you wonder if he can embrace the idea he is the anti-establishment candidate and rally the far right in missouri. >> that's part of the he indication here and you cover congress now tied apparently in the race for senate. he had been ahead. give us perspective about how important this race to the republican establishment. how worried are there? >> they are very worried. republicans have looked at the gimme. the race they could win.

she was considered a santorum. her poll numbers were just that bad. a word of caution. sometimes it takes voters a couple of days to digest what is going on. the poll was out last night. i would be interested to see what more polling data shows and what voters are familiar with this and what akin. >> and the impact on the wider race for president. let me play for you an ad and we just literally got this in. we will play an interview on mccaskill. >> to stage three cancer. >> america has got the equivalent of stage three cancer of socialism.

>> that is todd akin. abolish the minimum wage and get rid of federal student loans. >> so, nia-malika, it provides the bigger opening at a time when mitt romney had a problem with the gender gap. what do you think the impact will be on the presidential race? >> you see so far efforts from democrats to tie the bottom of the ticket, paul ryan, to todd ak akin. democrats are happy to have todd akin around. todd akin is mccaskell's friend. it gives them issues around abortion and planned parenthood. they have a 22--point lead in fav favorability among women.

you have leaders in tampa deciding on the language on the platform. they will have the language in the platform that bans abortion in the case of rape. you hope they have todd akin to kick around in the race. >> that bill would redefine rape. they call it forceable rape. i wonder, shira, what is the likelihood this is going to stick or hurt paul ryan? >> i don't know it will hurt paul ryan that much in the long term. a lot of republican members signed on to the bill you just mentioned. >> only one is running for vice president. >> that is absolutely a good point. very true. i think when people think of paul ryan, they think of his budget. it is no secret that paul ryan is a pro-life candidate. this timing right after the ryan pick is also very inconvenient for republicans and right into

the convention. they are discussing their platform. the timing could not be worse. one month from now, i don't think we will be ties todd akin to paul ryan on this one bill. >> let's bring in donna edwards. good morning. >> good morning. >> you are somebody who worked with him. are you surprised he said this or is this the kind of thing you expected from him? >> he represents the extreme views of the republican party. we have seen it from todd akin and across the board. it wasn't a surprise. this is a team that doesn't believe in bynuynuu biology and. you can't separate that from the broad policy agenda. his remarks are in the policy agenda of the republican party. >> do you see him as the guy who will succomb to the pressure to

step down? it is not like he is beholden to the establishment of republicans. does he have anything to lose if he stays in the race? >> there are a number of members of the republican party that have not been beholden to the party establishment and the mainstream what is now the extreme of the republican party. they are quite independent of their leadership. it would not surprise me at all that he would stay in the race. particularly since he did not enjoy all of their support from the beginning. why would he count on it now. it does seem to me whether or not he stays in the race, the policies he espoused, they are in lock step with paul ryan and the republican party. they may separate. it has stood against women's interests across the board.

>> i know there is a petition to remove akin from the science commission for the obvious reasons from his statement. it was interesting in "the huffington post" this morning. it is part of a reactionary to modernity. it is a war on facts and it's a war on critical thinking. is there a bigger picture that the democrats can highlight that will make a difference not just in this race, but other races. other senate races and in the presidential race? >> i think it is really clear that the republican agenda has actually fought what has been accepted science across the board. whether we're talking about the science behind climate change or the science behind pregnancy as we see in todd akin's remarks. it is a broader reflection of the republican agenda. i think that republicans can't run away from this.

frankly people like paul ryan who have attached themselves to the agenda whether it is through co-sponsorships or a voting record -- when you are standing shoulder to shoulder on this agenda, you can't run away from it even though you are part of a national ticket. >> it may be a difficult question, but he has said he misspoke. do you think he meant what he said? >> i do. if you look, for example, of the fact of changing the idea of rape, forceable rape, it brings good rape and bad rape and good victims and bad victims. that has been true in legislation. that has been proposed and signed on to by many republicans, not just this one and not just paul ryan. it is part of the republican agen agenda. you can say you misspoke, but it doesn't change what you said. it certainly doesn't change the

policy. >> congress member donna edwards, thank you so much. let me bring back in the panelists. part of the problem for the mainstream republicans trying to get todd akin out of the race, they are dealing with the party with the more conservative candidates. i'm talking about ted cruz and ted yoho. the most extreme view of the republican party. is this the new republican party, shira? there is one that is very far to the right and one that is more moderate? what are we looking at? >> you are looking at very specific case where is you have a conservative electorate. if you look at the entire congressional map, this doesn't consider every house. members are being elected across

the board. republicans and democrats. these are conservative places. in missouri, the republicans are very conservative. i would not call it a widespread problem. the republican party is fractured right now. >> will this have an affect on fund raising, do you think, nia-malika? we have seen the web site by mccaskell. she is trying to raise money off it. i think congress member akin thinks the money has dried up and other supporters will bring money in. what is the impact on the money? >> you have seen mccaskell trying to fund raise off this and generate enthusiasm among women who oppose these sorts of laws. i'm not sure how it will play in terms of missouri and in terms of his ability to raise money. i think you do see him attempting to try to become a poster boy of a certain wing of the party. you had some people come out to

president obama is now on the stump in two key battle ground states. in 20 minutes, he touches down in ohio. then to nevada and reno and north vegas. he is heading there under fire. 12% unemployment. a new attack ad by the romney camp about how he wants to get rid of welfare reform. >> i think the problem with that is there has been so many success stories with the welfare reform of the '90s. families may have stayed in the cycle of dependency. they saw a light at the end of the tunnel. >> joining me now is john ralston.

>> hi, chris. >> that ad accuses the president of gutting welfare reform. it is airing heavily there. the third since may. what does that tell us about the strategy there and the two campaigns feel is important there now? >> the welfare reform ad has been debunked. the president has not stripped the work requirement outline of welfare. it is really about the economy here for the romney campaign. they want to refocus attention on the economy. we have the highest unemployment in the country. it ticked up to 12%. that is down a little from a year ago. the epicenter of the foreclosure crisis in the country. the housing market is in very bad shape. >> it seems like they have not been able to seize it.

cnbc says 1 in 115 households are in foreclosure. what is the dynamic there? >> it is really startling, chris, in the sense we have the terrible economy. there have been almost no public polls that show president obama behind. what accounts for that? i think there are a couple of things. the democratic registration edge in the state is helping him. the democratic machine here is helping him. also, i just think that the fact is that the republicans here are not organized and independent voters here, while they are not that thrilled with the president's performance, have yet to really focus on blaming him for the economy. i don't think the romney message is getting through yet. i still think the state leans slightly toward obama, but it is still an opportunity for romney. >> there is disorganization on the republican side. it has been a couple of years since i covered an election there. it has been a couple of years

since the republican leadership has been disorganized. >> you have not missed much, chris. republicans are disorganized as ever. there is still factionalism. i had the chairman of the biggest party on my program in the state from clarke county. she said she doesn't trust mitt romney on the abortion issue. you have a parallel organization set up called team nevada. they are hoping every day and praying every day that the republican party here doesn't hurt them. >> decent size mormon population there. could that be critical if that is a very tight race, jon? or is it not a given they will vote for mitt romney? >> i think it is a given the mormons will vote 90% to 95% for

mitt romney. they are not that big percentage of a vote. if the race is close, it could make a difference. i think there is more of a focus on other populations, especially the hispanic population here, one of the fastest growing in the country. they could be as much as 17% or 18% of the electorate. the romney campaign is trying to do outreach. there is national and local efforts. that community is more important. >> how much do you show of nadel? >> his checkbook is bottomless. being spent publicly as we know to some extent in the presidential race. it is widely believed he is giving to crossroads gps. the c-4 where money doesn't have to be disclosed. they are on television here constantly attacking the

important? >> there are many people in the party that have those exceptions. i will tell you we're proud of the fact we're pro-life. i will tell you that paul and mitt are pro-life. as far as the details of some of these things like exception of rape or life of the mother, these are not uncommon differences that candidates have and don't share some of the detail on those exceptions. as far as our platform is concerned, this is the platform of the republican party. it's not the platform of rmitt romn romney. that all being said, these guys are proud pro-life candidates and we're a proud party. >> you can disagree with me on this, but it caused the gender gap in the latest poll which is 15%. you add in the comments and

platform. how concerned are you about the gender gap? what's your take? >> i don't buy the fact that the pro-abortion stance means you are pro-women. i don't happen to believe that most women -- i believe most women are pro-life. i know surveys bear that out. i think the pro-life position is a positive with us with women. not a negative. you have to be careful not to make a logical leap that you suffer with women is not true. >> i want to make sure we're on the same page about this. the polls i have seen show most people may say personally that they would not choose abortion and they believe it is a woman's right to choose, which is different than what the republican platform is. >> there are very -- first of all, i believe in the surveys we have seen number one is that most women are pro-life.

you take your example, most women who aren't pro-life, don't vote on that single one issue. i think it's a lot of analysis over something that isn't going to drive the election. first of all, we happen to believe that life begins at conception. i believe that is the morally correct position. i will tell you that in the end, this election will come down to a couple of things. i'm not going to go into a diatribe, don't worry. it will come down to whether or not barack obama fulfilled his promises to the american people. whether this is in the place it out to be and the promises he made and whether or not the republicans have the vision for the economy that squares with the people. those are the things that matter. >> this is about leadership, mr. chairman. you said that todd akin should drop out of the race.

said. we have been talking about this campaign as an economy. obviously reince priebus still thinks this is what it is going to be, but does this resonate with voters? kiki? >> i'm sorry. i thought you would go into the sound byte. what resonates with voters is the word we are hearing about today which is stupid. this is stupid. it is not about a woman's event or economic issue. it is about how stupid can you be? this is like somebody telling you the world is flat in the 21st century. we don't want these people in powerful positions in government trying to move us forward. it is not just for women. it is for men, too. it is for everyone to look up and say we are not going to take this anymore. you can't explain your way out of it. it was intentional. you may be educated today, but you believed it yesterday.
