and we're going to begin this morning with the final countdown. with the election just two months away, the end of the democrats' national convention last night featuring an address by president obama marks a fresh starting point for the race for the white house, and nbc's tracie potts joins us from charlotte with details this morning. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. they're breaking down now, but this place was packed last night. the fire marshal declared it at capacity early in the evening, hours before president obama spoke. ♪ will it make it easier on you now ♪ >> reporter: after a final night of music, jokes -- >> i know it's an empty chair. it makes you nervous, doesn't it? >> reporter: and speeches, including the vice president's. >> this man has courage in his soul, compassion in his heart and a spine of steel! >> reporter: president obama laid out what he called the choice, not just between two candidates, but two visions.

he rallied against too much government. >> we don't want handouts for people who refuse to help themselves, and we certainly don't want bailouts for banks that break the rules. >> reporter: he took a few jabs at mitt romney. >> feel the cold coming on? take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call us in the morning. >> reporter: and he recounted make accomplishments. >> osama bin laden is dead. >> reporter: plus, the auto bailout, detroit building more cars. >> today they can't build them fast enough because we reinvented a dying auto industry that's back on the top of the world. >> reporter: the bulk of this speech aimed at the middle class. >> i refuse to ask middle class families to give up their deductions for owning a home or raising their kids just to pay for another millionaire's tax cut. >> reporter: the president called for a million new manufacturing jobs, cutting the growth of college tuition in half and reducing the deficit by $4 trillion. >> i ask you tonight for your vote.

>> reporter: if he gets another chance. today, it's back on the campaign trail to new hampshire. new hampshire's one of the eight battleground states where mitt romney's rolling out 15 new ads today. the conventions are now over, and as he says in that ad, the race is on. lynn? >> all right, tracie, thanks. last night on msnbc's special convention coverage, republican strategist steve schmidt told rachel maddow and the coverage team he thought president obama did very well in his speech but we'll have to wait and see about its effectiveness. >> i think their convention was a home run. now we have to wait for the verdict. did this convention move the numbers? did it change the dynamic in the race? did it close the economic numbers where he's been lagging behind mitt romney? did it give a booster shot, as chris has talked about, of optimism to a pessimistic electorate that thinks the country's on the wrong track? the president tonight attacked from positions which

heretoforehave been weaknesses. he went right after the republican ticket. it was an effective speech, as almost all of his speeches are, but we'll see over the next couple days how the country reacts to it. does he have a bounce out of this convention? is he able to open up a lead? >> and you don't want to miss rachel maddow's unique take on politics and all the day's stories. that's "the rachel maddow show" week nights at 9:00 p.m. eastern on msnbc, the place for politics. a 21-year-old charlotte man has been arrested by the secret service for allegedly posting threats to kill president obama on twitter. authorities said dante jamar sims was detained wednesday after posting messages, including one on monday, threatening to "assassinate president obama this evening." this was two days before obama arrived in charlotte for the democratic national convention. investigators say sims told them he hated the president and was high on marijuana when he made the posts. if convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

a new generation of the kennedy family is running for political office. joseph kennedy iii won the democratic primary yesterday to run for congress from massachusetts. the grandson of robert f. kennedy went to stanford and harvard law school and worked as a prosecutor. he hopes to win the house seat being given out by congressman barney frank, who is retiring. former illinois police sergeant drew peterson has been found guilty in the 2004 drowning of his third wife, kathleen savio. court sketches show a stone-face peterson and an emotional savio family as the judge read the guilty verdict. after just two days, the jury was won over by a largely circumstantial case that, according to one juror, hinged on hearsay testimony that originated from peterson's missing fourth wife, stacy, whose whereabouts are still unknown. sentencing is set for november 26th. peterson faces up to 60 years in prison. here's your first look at

other news going on around america today. in maryland, newly released video shows a big rig that hit a police car and seriously injured a trooper. unbelievable. the officer was performing a traffic stop when that truck slammed right into his vehicle and then in to him. the officer may lose the use of his right arm. authorities say this is exactly why drivers need to slow down or move over when emergency vehicles are stopped. well, in new york, a man was killed after this fight at a gas station. a customer allegedly attacked a gas station attendant, but it was the attendant who turned the tables and began hitting and kicking the customer, who later died. the attendant has been questioned but not charged. and finally, on a much lighter note, in des moines, it didn't take long for a pair of monkeys to make their pick for the winner of tomorrow's big annual football game between the iowa state cyclones and the university of iowa hawkeyes. they toppled the barrel with the hawkeyes logo. that means they picked iowa for the big one. and before you accuse these

monkeys of being biased, they beat the odds-makers last year. they went with iowa state. so, they must be right. now for a look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with your weather channel forecast. good morning, bill. >> i know you're excited. this weekend, right? >> absolutely! bring it on. >> a full slate of college football games on saturday and the full nfl schedule on sunday, too. >> right. i'll be right there in front of the tv all weekend, just waiting. >> you won't watch a game all season. >> i love when it's football season because you get to make fun of me for the entire season about how i don't watch football. >> there are a couple other people out there in america with you. we have good changes coming this weekend. we've been struggling with the heat and humidity through much of the country as we've gone throughout especially about the last two months, and now we're going to see the break. this is one of the first signs fall is on the way. temperatures will dip throughout the middle of the country first and eventually the east coast sunday into monday.

this morning changes are under way, and when you get the battlegrounds between the warm, humid air and dry, cooler air, you're going to get showers and thunderstorms and that's breaking out this morning, most of it across iowa where the drought conditions are. so it's good we're getting the drenching, but there will be some damage with thunderstorm warnings along interstate 80. that's the worst drive this morning from the quad cities back to des moines, and eventually, this will try to push into illinois. as far as the forecast goes, dry air is moving through the northern plains. it's still humid and sticky with dew points in the 60s and 70s all the way up the eastern seaboard, so the humid air is in place, but this weekend, the cool air surges down from the great lakes. it pushes all the way into texas. so, texas, if you can survive one more day today in the 100s, your relief will come over the weekend. for the eastern seaboard, we're going to have to wait until sunday. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. >> hey, bill, i'll take it. thank you so much. coming up, wall street roars, data shows job numbers

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry and here's some of the top stories making news this morning. "the new york times" reports today the white house may declare that the haqqani network is a terrorist organization. the group has been blamed for deadly attacks on american troops in afghanistan. the government in pakistan has ordered foreign staff members of the international aid group save the children to leave the country. the group helped facilitate meetings between the u.s. and a doctor who allegedly helped hunt down osama bin laden, a charge save the children denies. a texas man was the victim

of a birthday prank that caused him to be removed in handcuffs from a plane in philadelphia after a hoax phone tip that he was smuggling something. christopher schell's birthday nightmare worsened when texas kept him in custody for outstanding warrants. and following the death of astronaut neil armstrong, his gloves and visor from the 1969 moon walk will be on display for two weeks at a national air and space museum center in virginia. meanwhile, his family has announced that, according to his wishes, armstrong, a navy man to the end, will be buried at sea. and now, here's your first look at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics." with two months left before the election, here is a look at the 2012 campaign in the twitterverse. the twitter political index tracks enthusiasm levels, and above 50 is positive, below that is negative. so, president obama now leads, 52-9 over the gop candidate, mitt romney.

and twitter broke down the tweet totals for both party conventions. well, president obama's speech averaged more than 52,000 tweets per minute, and the whole democratic convention in charlotte averaged 9 million tweets per minute. mitt romney's speech last week averaged only 14,000 tweets per minute and the gop convention in tampa averaged 3 million tweets per minute. well, television ratings from former president bill clinton's speech wednesday night showed he was close to matching the numbers for the cowboys and giants in the nfl season opener, and that doesn't count current tv and pbs. at the democratic convention and outside the arena, there may have been almost as many t-shirts as tweets, including a very popular one showing the president's "this seat is taken" tweet from last week after clint eastwood's speech. and it turns out that as president obama was renominated, the mitt romney campaign tried out a twitter hashtag this week

that they're calling #areyoubetteroff, hoping to get complaints about obama. they got about 600 no responses in 24 hours, but in the same period there were three times as many yes responses. about 1,800 people tweeted they were better off than four years ago. and that's your morning dish of "scrambled politics." and now, here's your first look at how wall street's going to kick off the day. it was great yesterday. the dow closed at 13,292 after jumping 244 points yesterday. the s&p went up 28, the nasdaq surged 66. taking a look at overseas trading this morning. in tokyo, the nikkei shot up 191 points, while in hong kong, the hang seng skyrocketed 592. and stocks did sizzle thursday, and that's thanks to action on european debt and upbeat job data here at home. markets roared after the european central bank announced a bond-buying program without limit to cut the borrowing rates of the eurozone's most

debt-stacked countries. the program finally answers longstanding calls for concrete, aggressive plan. and the effect was immediate. borrowing costs for spain and italy hit their lowest levels since spring. gold also jumped, hitting six-month highs, settling above $1,700 an ounce. traders were also boosted by u.s. companies adding staff in august at the fastest clip in five months. service sector employment also jumped higher than expected. new weekly claims for jobless benefits fell to the lowest level in a month. all that was especially encouraging ahead of today's key august jobs report. the dow led by walt disney, closing at an all-time high, and the s&p 500 led by glassmaker owens illinois both soared to their highest levels in more than four years. the s&p is now up 14% for the year, the dow almost 9%. the nasdaq, led by sandisk and micron technology, finished at its highest level in a decade. the nasdaq now stands at 20% up for the year.

[ crowd cheering, mouse clicks ] welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. and in sports, three 8-inning homers last night by the baltimore orioles shot them back into first place with the new york yankees, a first-place tie. here's nbc's fred roggin. >> good morning! with less than a month to go in the season, there is no race closer than the a.l. east. orioles and yanks in a dead heat after mark reynolds unloaded in baltimore, smashed a pair of home runs. he was on an absolute tear, eight homers in the last seven games. orioles won it 10-6. push came to shove between the cubs and nationals. the coaches went after each other in the fifth. that was quickly broken up. then in the sixth, castillo almost hit bryce harper and here we go, the benches cleared.

after a few tense moments, things escalated at first base. the real punches thrown, jawing back and forth. we'll call it a draw. nats won the game 9-2. it is one of the easiest things to do in baseball, but the colorado rockies made it look difficult. taking on the braves, runner on third, the pitch, the problem is he took his eye off the ball. it's all right, it's only the second inning, we'll get it back. no you won't. it was the only run of the game and braves won 1-0. art modell passed away. he owned the browns and ravens for over four decades, held mold the nfl in the '60s and moved the browns to baltimore in '96. novak djokovic was all business last night. juan martin del potro played some of the best tennis of his life, but it wasn't enough. djokovic advances to the semis with a straight-set win.

finally, to the pitch. stoppage time between the dynamo and real salt lake. penalty kick for colin clark. he shoots, he scores and he's gone! sprints off the field and into the tunnel! colin clark has left the building. wait a minute, come back, colin, we have more soccer to play. that's one way to make an exit and an entrance all in one play. that's your first look at sports. have a terrific weekend. i'm fred roggin. now for another look at the weather, meteorologist bill karins has your forecast. good morning once again, bill. >> i could have picked any city in the eastern half of the country and showed the example of how we're going to go from the hot, warm, humid air to just a beautiful forecast as we head throughout the weekend. it's going to take a little bit. the transition's going to be a little slow, so we're going to have to deal with a hot and humid friday, and even saturday's going to be stormy, but look at washington, d.c. sunshine and temperatures low 80s, upper 70s and much lower humidity. and that's the forecast for so many areas across the country. so, for today, the cooler air from the northern plains, storms through missouri and illinois.

"the words," a romantic thriller starring bradley cooper and zoey saldana looks to have the best spot -- >> what happened to bradley cooper? >> -- to have a top spot. what do you mean?
