the flames are threatening at least three communities, forcing thousands to flee. jay gray reports from near the fire line in haley, idaho. >> reporter: the fight against the beaver creek wildfire continues for a 13th day this morning in the idaho mountains. the massive blaze fanning out in several directions right now, pushed by strong winds and with no shortage of dried out brush for fuel. it's just an extended drought. it's been hot, it's been dry. the vegetation here is extremely dry. it's a perfect firestorm. >> reporter: 2,300 families have been evacuated and more than 7,000 now told to pack and be ready to leave in a moment's notice. >> it's a little unnerving, a little unsettling. >> reporter: an uneasy feeling thousands are dealing with across the west. more than 40 wildfires are burning out of control, more than 30 of those sparked by lightning in a region where they've seen at least 600 strikes in the last 24 hours.

>> the erratic conditions out here and the erratic fire behavior. >> reporter: unpredictable conditions, crews in the air and along the front line around the clock. jay gray, nbc news, haley, idaho. there's another fight brewing across the country. some congressional republicans are trying to ramp up national support to defund obamacare. there are town halls in at least nine states. melissa is live in washington with more. good morning. >> good morning to you, mara. nice to see you. nine cities in 11 days. some wondering if the tour is headed in the right direction. >> this is an urgent time to stop what we think is a very destructive law. >> after a kickoff last night in arkansas, the town hall road show rolls on. next stop, dallas.

>> there is no more important regulatory reform we can do than to reveal every single word of obamacare. >> senator cruz and the heritage foundation hoping to whip up enough support to gut president obama's affordable care act. >> the one unifying principal in the republican party is making sure that 30 million people don't have health care. >> this as a potential government shutdown looms, whether government funding and health care funding should be linked. will these town halls help republicans gain momentum? >> we're here, we're loud, we're proud and we're going to fight tooth and nail to make sure congress stops this. >> two groups are spreading the word in town halls and others are spreading the word in tv ads like this one. fears among some republicans that this could backfire, losing support for a republican party trying to rebuild itself.

>> shutdowns are not good a move at all. i think most americans are center right like we are and want limited government. >> now, after dallas, the tour mostly hits the eastern part of the country. it wraps up next week, next thursday in wilmington, delaware. now we turn to egypt where jailed ex-president hosni mubarak could be freed. prosecutors ordered his release. it's unclear when or if he would be set free after two years in detention. mubarak was ousted from power in the february 2011 revolution. he was found guilty last year of failing to stop the killing of some 900 protesters in the 18-day uprising. but he has secured a retrial for that conviction. this news comes on the heels of persistent and deadly clashes and word that the leader of the muslim brotherhood was arrested. defense secretary chuck hagel says the u.s. is reviewing every aspect of our relationship with

egypt. >> our ability to influence the outcome in egypt is limited. it's up to the egyptian people. and they are a large, great sovereign nation. an unprecedented move in pakistan. the former military dictator is facing murder charges stemming from a 2007 assassination of prime minister bhutto. prosecutors say musharraf committed terrorism by aiding in the killing. he's plead not guilty. bhutto was killed during a gun and bomb attack during a 2007 rally. prosecutes say musharraf failed to prevent her assassination. dick vandyke survived a close call monday. the 87-year-old actor was reportedly slumped over the

so ted cruz has announced that he'll renounce his canadian citizenship shortly after learning that he even had it because he released his birth certificate presumably to stoke the controversy. did it backfire on him? >> absolutely. it has an amateurism smell about it. the bigger problem is that he may have a legal challenge to his ability to be challenge. but he doesn't really have sxers. he's a freshman senator. she concentrate on his time in the senate, try to work up a record. and then run for president. rather than be using his first couple years to run for president. we already saw how badly that turned out when a young senator won in 2008. >> badly for your side. >> from high pmy perspective. >> chris christie is expected to win re-election. last time around, the gop had a little bit of trouble getting the conservatives behind mitt romney. are they facing the same kind of battle with christie?
