diplomacy seems vital and impossible. sometimes it seems like the world's best idea overall. tomorrow is a big, big day. ♪ good tuesday morning. right now on "first look," reports of a huge and loud explosion at the shopping mall inside kenya where terrorists had been holding hostages since saturday. is the united states about to engage in talks with iran for the first time in over 30 years? former president bill clinton up close and personal on nairobi terror, sir yoo and putin. plus, burger king is shaking up the french fry world. the thing president obama fears the most when it comes to smoking. and america's spirit comes smoking in. about an hour ago a huge

explosion rocked the westgate mall in nairobi, kenya. it is the fourth day in the standoff marked by even more bursts of gunfire. they battled al shabaab late overnight. it left 60 dead. nearly 200 injured including americans. the government there says it is in charge of the mall but the associated press says twitter messages from al shabaab says its militants are still holding their ground. not clear how many hostages were freed. the government says more than ten are arrested for questioning and the president there is expected to address the nation today. and back here at home, will they or won't they? a day of high stakes at the united nations. all eyes are on whether president obama will meet with iran's new leader face to face.

tracie, good morning. it would be the first of its kind in three decades. do we think it's going to happen? >> reporter: analysts think we vent see a formal sit-down but at this point any contact between the american president and new iranian president is going to make headlines if it's a hello in the hallway, if it's a handshake, if it's a brief conversation between meetings because as you noted, this is not happening over three decades. president carter was the last when he met with the shah of iran so this will be big news, as big as the president's speech before the 200-nation general assembly later today of the president likely to talk about the middle east and peace prospects there and also about the situation in syria. we're watching to see what, if any, interaction there may be between the united states and russia. they brokered this deal for them to turn over chemical weapons but the u.s. is still pushing

burden of chemical weapons, i think that would be great. if he got in the habit of doing it and we switched to a peace process even better. on the heels of his wife hillary clinton she might run in 2016 -- >> if she is running to your knowledge, blink twice. >> i blinked once. now to the latest on that looming government shutdown. the back and forth continues and there's news of a break in the republican ranks. senate gop leader mitch mcconnell is back ago way from ted cruz. the plan is for republicans to filibuster a house bill that denupdzs obama care and keeps the government running. democrats have vowed to remove the health care provision and hold a simple majority vote on the budget. cruz says keeping the bill off the floor is worth closing the government. but in a new cnbc poll nearly 60% of americans say defunding obama care is not worth a government shutdown, just 19%

favor linking negotiations of the health care law and the federal budget. vice president joe biden says devastation is devastation. he toured the flood damage over the big thompson river and on monday a 79-year-old woman was found bringing the death toll up to eight. six are still missing and biden vows the relief effort won't seize even if there is a government shutdown. >> i don't want folks here in shelters or watching on tv seeing the dysfunction of congress thinking all the relief efforts that they're not benefiting from now or likely to continue to benefit from will shut down. they will not shut down. >> and the second day of autumn felt more like winter. up to 4 inches of snow fell in the high country. several highways including i-70 near vail were closed briefly because of traffic accidents. bill karins is here now with a

less wintry forecast. >> snow, huh? >> unless you're i skier. >> die-hards can't wait for the first ski resorts to open and montana will get snow in the higher elevations. big buzz this morning, new information has come in from the european weather computer. remember back to hurricane sandy, two big weather computers, one in the united states and one in europe that gives us long-range forecasts and this one is hinting at a long duration, large wave and gusty wind event on the east coast of the united states. possibly starting thursday night or friday morning. what's interesting is that the european computer unlike our american computer actually brings this storm closer to the coast as we go through the weekend and brings it right along the jersey shore by sunday into monday. so that's a part of this country that doesn't need a large beach erosion event. it could be the first significant storm in the east coast in a while. not talking a hurricane, more of like a nor'easter-type storm. heavy rain in tampa today. if we're going to have airport

mayweather said manziel, quote, may not be able to make money off himself but i can. he won 200 grand. the astros game against cleveland on sunday drew an official television rating of zero in houston. the astros lost to the indians, 9-2. none of the 581 randomly selected houston households were tuned in. ouch. in texas the rangers rios hit for the cycle with the double in the first inning and single in the third. then he smacked a home run in the fourth inning and hit a triple to the gap in right center field. okay. don't try this at home, kids. a soccer player dives head first into an oncoming player with the ball. well, it doesn't end well. he gets kicked in the mouth by the oncoming opponent and loses three teeth in the process. yikes.

kevin cirilli is just ahead. american presidents love golf. in last president obama played. some say it's out of touch or recommend better ways for presidents to spend their time. former president george w. bush on the golf channel defended president obama's frequent trips to the golf course. >> i know what it's like to be in the bubble and i know the pressures of the job and to be able to get outside and play golf with some of your pals is important for the president. it does give you an outlet. >> it's a good release then. >> i think it is and i think it's good for him to play golf. lawmakers in new jersey will vote to override governor chris chris at the's veto of same-sex marriage. it is expected over november's general election. supporters need a handful of

grandfathered in. that's going to do it for your morning dish of "scrambled politics." joining me now from washington with this morning's first look at politics politico reporter kevin cirilli. >> thanks for having me. >> of course. so the president, kevin, speaking before the u.n. general assembly today, the big question on everybody's minds will the u.s. be meeting with iran. >> well, you know, i think that's something we'll have to wait to see. but the top lawmakers on both sides of the aisle including senator mccain as well as senator chuck schumer have urged the president to tread cautiously and to make sure that any messages that are sent to iran include the message the united states will not settle for an iran nuclear weapons program. >> and let's go ahead and continue with the foreign policy, kevin. earlier in the show we were looking at video of bill clinton on "letterman" last night talking about russia and syria

and whether or not his wife will run in 2016. could he be more any more vague here when it comes to hillary in 2016? >> you know, everybody wants to know will hillary clinton run and so i think she has a lot of questions. what's interesting, though, the former president as well as president obama, they're joining together to -- as this obama carrollout, you know, and crisscrossing the country trying to get this obama care off to a successful start because, you know, i think that there is an interesting nexus. if you think all the way back to 2008 during that epic primary battle, it was hillary care and so i think that it's beneficial to the clintons if obama care is implemented. >> quickly, what could you make of his comments regarding putin and syria? >> well, you know, i think that with regards to putin and syria, i think that we're starting to see people moving forward. but clearly the president -- the former president is supporting obama and it's going to be interesting to see how their relationship evolves over these
