"first look" is up next. good friday morning. right now on "first look," stocks rocket over 300 points. does wall street see success in washington before the rest of us? and overwhelming number of americans are pretty steamed about the shutdown. the paws of war, the creatures that have an amazing effect on veterans trying to shake the pains of war. plus an american hero who took great pleasure in conquering fear has passed away. also, pitching ace justin verlander does it again. and will captain phillips rule the weekend? good morning, everyone. i'm betty nguyen. day 11 of the american shutdown and americans are frustrated about it.

a new poll says a majority want members of congress fired. chuck todd has more on the new wall street journal numbers. >> in our brand news wall street journal poll, 65% believe the shutdown is doing quite a bit of harm to the economy. and one in three said it has directly impacted their own lives. politically, republicans are the losers by a 53-31 margin. more folks blame congressional republicans for the shutdown than the president. 70% of all respondents believe congressional republicans are putting their own political agenda ahead of what's good for the country. just 51% say the same thing of president obama. and the political damage to the gop brand doesn't end there. 53% of a negative view of the party in this survey, the worst rating for republicans in this poll's nearly 25-year history. and that's given democrats a boost. they lead the gop by eight points on the question of which party should control congress.

their largest lead since 2009. >> and that was nbc's chuck todd reporting. while poll numbers continue to plummet, they don't seem to be helping congress and the president broker a deal. the government shutdown is approaching its third week, but there was caution opt limb from house republicans after a meeting at the white house last night. after weeks of icy receptions, relations are starting to fall. and it looks like the two sides could be inching closer to an agreement. tracie potts is joining us live from washington. good morning, happy friday. can it be possible that we might see a deal before the weekend? >> reporter: it's possible, betty. they sat down and talked as they said they wanted to do. and now it looks like there may be at least be some movement here toward some sort of deal that would, number one, end the government shutdown and get people back to work. and also present this historic default that the government says could happen as early as next thursday. here's where we are, after an hour and a half meeting at the white house, president obama and

top republicans, it looks like they may be inching closer toward something that would temporarily raise the debt ceiling, but in exchange republicans want six weeks to negotiate over the budget. that's something senate democrats said they're not going to do, that the government needs to reopen first. but here is what republicans had to say after that meeting about where they're headed next. >> it's gone on too long. we hope that the president will choose negotiation over crisis. leadership over inaction. and dialogue over silence. >> what we want to do is offer the president today the ability to move a temporary increase in the debt ceiling in agreement to go to conference on the budget for his willingness to sit down and discuss with us. >> reporter: one key republican was in that meeting said that they are working on a deal, possibly to open the government,

reopen the government as soon as monday. betty? >> we'll be watching very closely. thank you, tracie. meanwhile in statehouses across the nation, governors are taking action and leaders want permission to reopen national parks. this morning the obama administration has green-lighted the idea but says those four states, colorado, south dakota, utah and wyoming, must use their own money. parks slated to reopen include mount rushmore and bryce canyon in utah. the closings are costing them hundred of thousands of dollars each and every day. also this morning, the senate's famed ohio clock has ticked its last tock, at least for now. workers in charge of winding the 200-year-old time piece were furloughed. two rabbis are being held without bail in a plot to kidnap and torture jewish men to force them to give their wives religious divorces. the fbi staged raids in brooklyn and upstate new york. the rabbis and eight others were

charged with kidnapping in the scheme, which they bragged about using cattle prods and plastic bags over the victims' heads. the group was allegedly involved in more than 20 kidnappings over two decades with the wives who couldn't get divorces paying up to $60,000, including money for tough guy enforcers. the prosecutors said they beat them up, tied them up, shocked them with tasers and stun guns until they got what they want. he said the defendants were motivated by money and not faith. u.s. soldiers in real life "iron men" suits may be here sooner than you think. tony start's "iron man" suit shoots missiles and can fly. but this armor doesn't fly, but it has better baalyic protection and gives soldiers better human strength. researchers in the u.s. army are creating an exoskeleton suit to

detect and heal injuries. that's incredible. it also gives soldiers a 360 view of the battlefield. and they expect to have a prototype ready next year. we'll keep you posted on that. all right. we do have some breaking news to tell you about. this out of sweden, the winner of this year's nobel peace prize has been announced. the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons has won this year's prize. now for a look at your business news today, we turn to cnbc's hampton pearson. good morning, hampton. >> hi, betty. futures are lower after stocks spiked big time on thursday on hope for a deal to end the government shutdown. the dow posting the second best gape of the year up 323 points. and a new study warns if the white house and congress fail to raise the debt ceiling, that could cut americans retirement savings by more than 20% or $2 trillion. the study was conducted by the american society of pension professionals and act wares.

a quick look at the business headlines. betty, back to you. all right, have a great friday. and on one of the best stories of the day, that involves an indiana waitress who not only got stiffed on a $44 check, but the customer left her a nasty note using the n-word on the receipt. the waitress posted a picture on facebook and someone from california saw it and started a campaign called tips for toni. well, jenkins was just presented almost $11,000. good for her! that is some tip. and some payback, indeed. we'll get the latest in sports from richard lui. good friday to you. it was a cake walk in the american league series last night. i'll take you to the fourth inning with miguel cabrera with a two-run homer. justin verlander had a no-hitter but then the single for oakland, but that was it. the tigers win 3-0. off to the championship series

low as 60 feet forced drivers to pull over and boats to float aimlessly in the harbor. surprisingly, a lack of visibility did not seem to deter those driving on scooters. why? we still don't know. you think they would, of all people, would want to stop. >> they are more daring. what about weather, what's the worst driving weather you want to be in? >> i would say a blizzard, with all the snow coming down. >> that's a little scary. if you get stuck in a blizzard and your car can't move -- >> you could freeze to death. >> i'll give you that one. you win. as far as the morning forecast goes, we are still watching a little rain for philadelphia. the areas in storm number one on the right screen. number two with high winds near new mexico yesterday. the strong wind gusts are going through nebraska and through the dakotas. so there's two storms, the one on the east coast has been well advertised. it hasn't rained that much from new york city northward, but down along the new jersey shore to maryland, harrisburg, pennsylvania, got four inches of rain yesterday. so some areas are getting a lot of rain. and philadelphia, looks like a

batch of heavy rain over you as i speak. that will be exiting shortly. there's more showery weather coming ashore, so it won't end any time soon. that's where the focus of the rain is. north of trenton, don't expect much, but south of trenton near wilmington, delaware, that's where the heaviest rain is. the weekend forecast shows wet weather near the philly and d.c. area with storms moving from the midwest to the great lakes and then texas on sunday. so there's not a lot of bad weather out there. the storm in the midatlantic should be gone by sunday. >> that's a good sign for the weekend, not a lot of bad weather. we'll take it. thank you. a former president has tough words for lawmakers in washington. and there's a new way to voice your frustration over the gridlock. we'll tell you all about it. ♪

to replace every single member of congress. are these dismal poll numbers having any kind of effect on the gridlock? >> well, a lot of the lawmaker that is i've been speaking with this week say that they're aware of these polls, but i don't really think it is. i think this is just the new normal, if you will. >> don't say that. >> well, that being said, we do have rumors of a temporary six-week deal that could happen any day now. >> well, let's talk about it for just a second, they are talking about the six-week deal, is that really just going to delay what inevitably is going to have to happen, them coming to some sort of agreement. if it gets approved, we'll see this another six weeks down the road? >> yeah, just in time for the holidays we'll have all this madness all over again. if you are the republicans, you look at this and you see that perhaps they might interpret this that their tactics in some ways worked because nothing really will be settled. so i think you're going to be

seeing a lot of people declaring victory, including senator ted cruz, because i think that the stall and delay tactic is just going to carry us right into december and then after december it's just in time for the midterm elections of 2014. >> well, you mentioned victories, the dow was up 320 points yesterday, the second best performance percentagewise this year, so does wall street know something that maybe main street doesn't? >> well, so right yesterday early in the morning when we saw that bounce on wall street, just like ten minutes later it was the rumor circulating that speaker john boehner was open to a shorter term deal. so i think that wall street is eyeing this and the analysts i spoke with yesterday all seem to be coming to a consensus that the six-week deal, especially for that debt limit on october 17th, is in the works. >> okay, kevin, as always, thank you for your insight. we appreciate it. >> thank you for having me.
