can lawmakers find a way on columbus day to compromise as the deadline to raise the debt ceiling looms on thursday. this is "way too early." hey, everybody, good morning, i'm thomas roberts. we're going to tell you about a cyclone that tore through india over the weekend and the florida woman, get this, whose home was infested with at least 20,000 bees. it's a lot of honey, the kind you don't want. we begin in washington with day 14 of the federal government shutdown but even more pressing is the looming threat of default sui now just three days away. global leaders expressing concern if the u.s. is unable to meet expectations it will have an impact well beyond their borders. any hope to re-open the government lies within the senate and talks between democrats and republicans are now focused around spending and how long sequestration cuts

should remain in tact. democrats reportedly want those to last through november. but republicans are looking for a stretch. a little longer on that deal. over the weekend democrats rejected a plan by senator susan collins to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for repealing the tax on medical devices included in obama care and yesterday senator john mccain warned about the dangers of their strategy. >> we should be sitting down and the president should be engaged and democrats, they better understand something, what goes around comes around and if they try to humiliate republicans, things change in american politics and i know what it's like to be in the majority and in the minority. it won't be forecast gotten. now is the time to be magazi magnanimous and get it done. >> meanwhile, senator mccain's running mate was in washington over the weekend from 2008 joined by senator ted cruz for a profession over the shutdown and

obama care. >> we are here to honor our vets. you look around, though, and you see these barricades and, you have to ask yourself, is this any way that a commander in chief would show his respect, his gratitude to our military? >> why is the federal government spending money to erect barricades to keep veterans out of this memorial? there are 14 bills sitting on harry reid's desk to fund vital government functions, to fund the v.a. the senate won't even vote to fund the v.a. >> all right, so the world war ii memorial along with national monuments and parks have been closed since october 1st. the business and how it's

impa impacting others. geoff? >> the markets will be open here even though it is a federal holiday. >> absolutely, and this is a chance for the markets to give their response to what they see as a political failure even as the clock is ticking down here and end of last week the markets were up on the expectation that negotiations were getting serious and there would be a deal announced over the weekend. that has not happened as we know so you're getting the markets selling down here and the indications are at the moment that the dow could be off about 100 points at the open. european markets are just treading water at this stage. one bright spot i guess for those out there who want to see the fed continuing to juice these markets, this debt ceiling story is pushing back expectations on whether the fed might actually start its tapering program. that is reducing this $85 billion that is spent every

month buying bonds. now the talk that we may go december or january for tapering to begin which would reflect a normalization of the central bank's interest rate policy. but, of course, as long as the shutdown continues to damage the economy, then tapering is potentially pushed back. >> now is the point we can track the ripple effect in terms of uncertainty in spending for everyday americans. >> yeah, this is fascinating. a survey done in the washington region indicating savings have increased both deposits from companies and individuals are going up and on the face of it that's a good news story, people are being cautious. but the other side of that story is that is money that is not being spent on goods and services to grease the wheels of the economy so you can see how concerns are creating cautiousness over the shutdown and that is going to have an

impact on the spending that takes place on the economy. so it is not a good story for those who are running businesses in the usa at the moment. back to. >> you geoff cutmore. thanks. we turn to syria where a dozen were killed in the latest in a string of car bombings. this comes as seven red cross workers were kidnapped at gunpoint and those responsible may have ties to al qaeda. syria says the gunmen opened fire on the red cross convoy while traveling to damascus. the free syrian army is trying to negotiate their release and after the abducts multiple the explosions rocked syria's capital. one was a double car bombing that left two security guards dead and knocked a state tv channel off the air. the explosion was two miles away from the hotel where chemical weapons inspectors are staying. another insider attack inside afghanistan. an american soldier was killed. the gunman was wearing an afghan

security uniform and this happened in the eastern part of the country near the office of the governor. at least 15 coalition service members have been killed in ten insider attacks this year. at least 17 people are dead in india after a cyclone phailin pummeled the coastline. with communication crippled and water and debris everywhere the search for survivors is slow going. 250,000 homes believed destroyed in one district alone but there is a real sense tragedy was averted. in 1995 another cyclone of similar strength killed some 10,000 people. but this time as many as 1 million people were evacuated from their homes ahead of that storm. so the case of who killed baby hope had been scold for more than two decades. now the young girl's cousin confessed to the brutal murder. for years police had little to go on to figure out who killed the child found in a cooler on the side of a new york city highway in 1991. well now after all that time the girl's cousin admitted to

sexually abusing and murdering the girl just 4 years old. conrado juarez says he killed her while staying with his sister and enlisted his sister's help with disposing of the body. police said they would always catch the killer and identify that young girl who many thought of as one of their own die sprite his confession he pleaded not guilty in the murder. michael douglas revealed that his bout with throat cancer was contracted shall we say through a sexual act but now he's changing hills story on what kind of cancer he really had. in an interview he said he learned his diagnosis was tongue cancer while he was promoting the sequel to the movie "wall street." if we do have to have the surgery it's not going to be pretty. you'll lose part of your jaw and tongue and all of that stuff. survival rate for tongue cancer is 85%.
