powerful storms ever recorded. right now, supertyphoon haiyan is lashing the philippines. they are expecting catastrophic damage. here is francis coe. >> reporter: the typhoon slammed early friday. the central philippines are barrelling the front. drenching rains that made visibility virtually nonexistent. debris went through the air. the roads transformed into rapid moving rivers. storm surges are expected to reach 20 feet in some cities. about 1 million people are taking coverage in shelters in 20 provinces. because the country is made up of islands, there's fear residents have few options.

they are calling haiyan a perfect storm with a clear eye. the only positive, it's fast moving. that's little comfort for residents now bracing for the worst. >> nbcs bill karins will be more on the powerful storm in a few minutes. now to an nbc exclusive with president obama including an apology. chuck todd sat down with him and asked him about a promise he made to the american people that said if you like your health insurance, you can keep it, period. >> first of all, i meant what i said. we worked hard to try to make sure we implemented it. obviously, we didn't do a good enough job and i regret that. we are talking 5% of the population in the individual market, out there buying health insurance on their own. it only affected a small amount

of the population, it means a lot to them when they get this letter, canceled. i am deeply concerned about it. i assigned my team to see what can we do to close some of the holes and gaps in the law. >> do you feel like you owe these folks an apology? they feel misled. you have seen the anger out there. >> i regret, very much, that what we intended to do, which is to make sure that everybody is moving into better plans because they want them as opposed to they are forced into it, that we weren't as clear as we needed to be in terms of the changes that were taking place. i am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me. we have to work hard to make sure they know we hear them and we are going to do everything we

can to deal with folks who find themselves in a tough position as a consequence with this. >> also addressed the speculation in "double down" where authors report the obama campaign considers swapping joe biden out for hillary clinton on the 2012 presidential ticket. >> here is the one thing i can say for certain, that, if they had asked me, i would have said there is no way i'm not running again with joe biden. i genuinely believe he has been one of the best vice presidents in our history. he also happens to be a friend. he happens to be one of my most important advisers on domestic and foreign policy. i like him. when my back is up against the wall, he has my back. >> meanwhile, house speaker john boehner responsed to the remarks on obama care. what americans want to hear is the president is going keep his promise. the house will vote next week to

have any idea? >> there's senate democrats up for re-election in 2014 who would like to see him make sure this gets settled. senators put forth and talked to the white house, vice president biden saying wait a minute, let's think about delaying some of the deadlines beyond the march 31st deadline. i think that would be a bigger deal, betty, than the apology that president obama said yesterday. >> people want something tangling. we have to talk about the "time" magazine cover. it's calling chris christie the elephant in the room. some say it was in poor taste, could it actually work to his advantage? many americans struggle with weight loss as well. >> exactly. the day after the fda with their transfat ruling, now we have the new jersey governor and his weight. it is something that everyone can relate to, i think. beyond that, i have to tell you,
