reporting the news is an exciting job, but reporting the news on the border between two forces fighting each other is more than exciting, it's perilleus, and to be fair, only few are ready to defy death and report from such flashpoint regions. in simple terms, you must have the guts to do it. this is soap, and i'm your host, hasantavico. ali shuaib is seasoned correspondent with the lebanese television station almanar. he's reported extensively from southern lebanon, in particular from the border with occupied palestine, where he's confronted israeli soldiers many times. he talks to us about how challenging it is to report from war zones where one should expect death any time.

welcome to the program, first of all i like to start by saying at what age did you become a journalist? when was it that you felt that i need to be a journalist? firstly, thank you for having me, it is worth mentioning that i have not stopped reporting from the border. with the occupied palestines since the confrontations erupted on october 7, not even for a single day. my home is located in a village just 30 km from the frontline and i used to go to my home just uh for few hours before returning to the frontline. it is my first time leaving the frontline upon invitation to the festival to complete the outside of my mission, which is reflecting what goes on at the and the importance of the operations. conducted by hazballah there in

support of gaza and the palestinian resistance. regarding your question, i was 13 when i felt that i need to be a journalist. in 1983, there was an israeli position near our home in the village. i was imagining myself a journalist filming and making a report on that position through a small window that lies above the house's door. since then uh my passion for filming began. when i was 18, i began training. to learn filming and i have continued ever since in 1993 i began working in journalism. initially i was working as cameraman, but since 1999 i have been working as cameraman and correspondent. i was feeling myself at the border area before the withdrawal of israeli forces from the occupied parts of south lebanon. in the year 2000, i was the first cameraman to accompany those who liberated south lebanon. i filmed. historic scenes that

show the resistance fighters and people storming the occupied areas and liberating from the israeli occupying forces and their agents. documented those moments with photos that have been used ever since. later began reporting from that area after live coverage was allowed following the eliberation of those villages. i'm still working as cameraman and correspondent at the border. it's very interesting to know that - we've always been on the front line of reporting in crisis regions, so that's that brings me to of my next question, which is um, did you study crisis management to do crisis reporting? during that period of time, this really army was launching a series of massive wars on south lebanon, including what the israeli regime calls operation accountability. i covered the aggression uh that was conducted on entire lebanon in july 1993. i also

covered a massive war launched by the israeli enemy in 1996 as well as the july 2006 war that destroyed vast parts of the lebanese areas. i was uh camping in a board. area during the uh 33-day war and never left it because i believe that as long as the resistance fighters are carrying their weapons, i also should fight alongside them using my camera. i also covered all the battles that took place in syria against daesh and anostra front in aleppo, alamun, hama, palmaira and the entire syrian desert as well as areas along the iraqi borders. moreover, i was also voiced of the people in lebanon. reflecting their suffering, i was reporting on their steadfastness against israely aggression, showing the suffering that they were grappling with because of the economic situation and reflecting their determination to stay on their land, despite these really strikes against their areas,

these years? initially, the operations conducted by the resistance group did not demonstrate significant strength against the israely enemy. day by day, the group be... began accumulating its military capabilities and his expertise and received the necessary weapons to confront this ruly enemy. the enemy doesn't possess what the resistance group does. the resistance fighters faith and jihadist spirit inspired by the battle of carbala in which imam hussein was martered motivated them to fight. with such spirit we defeat the israeli forces and force them to flee. when the resistance fighters shout allahu akbar and launch attack, the israeli soldiers... feel frightened and scattered like mice. the group possesses significant capabilities in technology, security, intelligence and overall military strength. since the confrontations erupted in gaza on october 7, clashes erupted in the northern front. when the enemy launches attack within

the conflict zone, hezbolah launches dozens of drones and missiles towards serious occupied golden heights and toward areas deep inside occupied palestine, including tabrias, is enforcing its rules on the israeli enemy, the israeli regime is exerting pressure to stop the operations that target is positions in... solidarity with gaza, but hazbolah continues to support gaza and target israely military positions, meanwhile the enemy doesn't there to launch attacks beyond the conflict zone. very interesting, so since october 7th onwards to this very day, it seems that you've literally been reporting from south lebanon every day. yes, i covered the situation in the water villages and never left them, as i mentioned before, in order to reveal the truth during the... this confrontation, the media warfare is essential because the camera has become a weapon ache

into the rifle and the missile used by the resistance fighters. when a resistance fighter targets a military position, it's crucial to publish a photo of the attack, while the war media bureau films the military operations, we also as media workers cover and report on these achievements. media coverage of the acts of resistance is vital to show the defeat of israel and the brutality of the israel. the army that targets some civilian areas triggering retaliatory operations, so we have a weapon and we are clinging to it, media is double-ed sword, and we should wield it carefully. indeed, rifles and cameras have become complementary weapons, we can't separate them. when the weapon is used, it scores military gain on the battlefield, but the camera allows people to witness those achievements, especially as the enemy employ similar strategies, so we also should adopt such an approach. to show the audience the real situation, the camera helps us as media workers to highlight the achievements made by

the resistance fighters. journalists are and the creators of those achievements, but our mission is to reflect them for the audiences in lebanon and across the world. and so reporting from such flashpoint regions uh, where do you get the courage and the the boldness to be able to report from such hazardous places? first the experience. plays an important role in this regard. i've been carrying camera and covering all these confrontations for more than 30 years. we feel a little nervous when we face dangers and that's normal, but we don't give up. some of us were even murtered and i personally was injured and lost my leg while i was covering border clashes, but received treatment and continued my work. it was just a short pause after which resume my work, as long as we know that the resistance fighters are stationed in their... position and ready to be martered, we are also ready to keep carrying our weapon and be martered defending

the same cause. our mission is motivated by our faith. indeed, we are media workers, but we have cause and are defending our land and homeland. other person who dies while defending his homeland and his faith is a morter. then when we took such decision, we considered all the dangers. thus, as long as the resistance fighter is carrying his weapon and is ready to be martered, i'll also carry... my weapon and be ready to be martered and i will never give up that weapon. was once injured, but i continued my mission, even if i am injured once again, i'll complete my mission. if i'll be martered, then that's the will of god the almighty. ask god for martterdom when my mission is accomplished. i think that i will continue to go on that path as long as i'm able to do so. and nothing can terrify me. i'm receiving many israely threats on social media accounts and even through phone calls where they threaten to kill me. i ignored those threats, but i respond. with my work and by reporting from battlefield, even work right at the border fence showing the

audience how the israeli's homes are being destroyed as they did with our homes and that the settlers are being displaced as our people were displaced. i feel from right at the border even after months of confrontation and that's part of my message that bear. okay so we're going to uh take a look at some pictures now, there's a picture here, we want to take a look at the picture, let's see it together, so an interesting picture. this is my son, hassan, it was 13 years old, i used to take him to the border, he has become a cameraman, i no longer film as he has become the cameraman for our reports and is accompanying me during all the coverages at the border, he is my only son and he chose this work by his own will, i didn't impose my decision on him, so you only have one son, yes, yes, my only son, very interesting, very interesting and... so um, speaking of family, um, whenever you want to go to the the the

front lines and do, crisis reporting and your life is in danger, as you said, you lost your leg uh during one of those report reportings, um, what is your family tell you? my family has been beside me during all these stages of my career, and they know me well, they share the same ideas i do, we also share the same culture, when my wife and i decided to start. family, we knew exactly what our life would be like, my wife knows that she may pay the price for her decision and i spend significant time away from home and face the risk of morting my family. also make sacrifices for the sake of the same cause, we are committed to the path of the resistance and the liberation of the land with the palestinian cause at the forefront. what's happening in gaza is humanitarian issue? do you think when my wife and children watch the tv and see the crimes committed in gaza such as the killing of children, women and the earlierly people, they will ask me to stay at

home and refrain from working in support of the gazins. i believe that they even encourage me to do this humanitarian work. what hezbollah is doing in support of gazans is not only a military mission, but also a humanitarian one. we express our solidarity with the people of gaza in every possible way. our resistance fighters and civilians have been murdered and injured as a ransom for them. hundreds of homes were also destroyed in our villages and their owners considered sacrifice for the sake of the people of gaza and palestine. tens of thousands of people were displaced from their villages. yet they view it as a ransom for palestine and the resistance and people of gaza, this is our culture, we don't accept oppression and always stand with the right side of the battle, we paid a price for supporting yemen and for backing syria against daesh and the nustra front. this is famous code by said hasan nasrulah that says, "we will be whatever we should be. indeed, we were present wherever we should have been,

and we'll continue to be present wherever our moral, religious and the humanitarian duty guides us to." has there been any instance uh where while reporting you've come close to death and said your last prayers you saying has there ever any ever been any incidents like that absolutely faced many dangers during my 30 year career during aleppo battle uh for example was in talal ace beside two iranian resistance fighters and two syrian fighters. as well as cameraman a nostra front fired the shelling that hit near me, the two syrians were murtered while the two iranians were injured. the cameraman was laid on the ground, but thankfully he was not harmed. i was in a shock shaking the dust on my clothes. that's one of such incidents and uh there are many other incidents like that. during the july war, there were times when i

would uh leave home only to find it destroyed immediately behind me because of an air strike that threw. away in one of the most serious incidents, the cameraman and i were in the desert of palmeira, and we mistakenly entered in area he held by daesh at 2 a.m. we had no phones and we were completely disconnected from the world. we were lost and our car ran out of fuel. moreover, two of the car's tires went flat. back then we surrendered to our fate and uh we're speaking to allah, the almighty. we thought that those would be our last. hours we saw vehicle uh heading towards us and we thought that will be captured, but allah the almighty sent us an unexpected thing a moment when we were reciting the shahada waiting for death, the vehicle was carrying to resistance fighters who were also lost, they had fuel and two tires and helped us before we completed our separate ways, that was a blessing from allah

the almighty during the july war faced many dangers and i recited the shahada many. times, i believe that my mission has yet to be accomplished, i hope that i deserve to be martered when my mission is accomplished, i aspire to become closer to allah, so i ask allah to bless me with marcherdom, and as my last question, um, as you said, you, you've trained your son to become your photographer, your cameraman, he's about 30 years old, you said, what would you tell new and aspiring journalists who would want to follow in your footsteps as as a journalist to? report on the frontlines and do crisis reporting and literally face danger, firstly i want to tell the journalists who want to report from the frontlines that they shouldn't go there in search of fame, instead they should bear a message and have cause to defend, because reporting from the frontline could cost them their life. they should understand that the camera and microphone are weapons used to

achieve noble goal. secondly, they should know where they will report from. so they should know the geography of that area, the nature of the confrontations and the battles taking place there, and how to avoid the strikes and how to deal with the injuries. they should also realize which information uh should be published and which information should be hidden during the wartime, as long as there is a confrontation with the israeli enemy. my speech is addressed to the journalists who are belonging to the access of resistance, as not all the filmed videos or the hurt information. could be published: firstly, the information must be true, and we shouldn't repeat unreliable information. first of all, we should obtain true information, whether through direct observation. or from three different sources. afterwards, we should see whether publishing such information will benefit the resistance fighters who are engaged in a battle with the

enemy or not, and consider their impact on the morale of their lebaniese society and that of the zionists. any journalist who is heading to the frontline should think of these things. people shouldn't go to the frontline to get followers and boost likes and become popular on social media. the correspondent. should be humble and god will exalt him. when the correspondent, the cameraman or the journalist does work for the sake of fame, they'll be marginalized by the people. what gain journalists fame is their sincerity and humility. when you become humble, allah the almighty will exalt you, and people will follow your reports because they trust you. people hate arrogant journalists, who are searching for fame. people follow the journalists that defends a cause. people love the cause. and not the person themselves, when people follow, they do so because he reports a specific cause that they care about, they don't care about the person themselves, but they care about
