challenged their commitment to free speech, they showed the other side of the western media, the people who see the true face of what's happening in gaza. since october 7th, 2023, with us support, israel did the most horrific things to the palestinian people. they also played the dirtiest game in the media. under the guise of freedom of speech, this is about the comments you don't come across, the posts you don't see, and the names you won't hear, this is about people who got silenced but kept fighting, this is about the voices of palestine, got some personal news to share, so global news fired me for speaking up about palestine and my social media accounts, being their only palestinian journal. is in the news room, i
10:04 am
thought my voice would matter the most to them during these times. this is zahrah al-ahras, a palestinian journalist in canada. she's talking about the termination of her contract 10 days after the start of the war. she was fired because of her support for palestine in social media. then she wrote on linkedin that she knows more colleagues who feel frustrated by, i was told to take down every posting comment with #freepalestine, gaza jonas. side and gaza under attack saying that my posts make me look unbalanced. i was told the problem is with me expressing my beliefs, my opposition for israel's genocide of my people. during that phone call, i repeatedly asked which post exactly are the problem, why are they the problem and so on. i was told that all over everything i have been posting gave the perception of bias that i as a journalist i'm not able to uh...

communicate in a balanced way about the situation according to their standards, but zahrah wasn't the only journalist who was punished for sharing her thoughts on social media. two days before zahra's termination, the bbc announced it had launched an urgent investigation into six journalists on bbc arabic for their posts on social media. at least two of them are still facing problems in their workplace and their melia. one of them got fired after 20. after years of working at the bbc, nada abdul samamed expected more respect and professionalism from the agency. يعني العنف ما ضروري يكون بالعنف الجسدي، في عنف في في نوع من ترهيب انه انا بتكه استغني عني وراح اتحول لتحقيق، والتحقيق يعني شو يعني تحقيق يعني. but this is
10:06 am
not the end of the list of journalists facing trouble for sharing honest opinions. jackson frank from philadelphia, the united states, is a sports journalist covering basketball. he was hired by felly voice, local media. on october 9th, his favorite basketball team announced in a post that they were supporting israel. jackson bluntly tweeted, "this post sucks free palestine." he was fired by philly boyce the following day. am adwan is a freelance journalist based in gaza. he's worked with many media outlets including al-jazera and the associated press. from the start of the war, he expressed his emotions and support for his compatriots. however, it didn't go down well with many people in other media companies who had strong ties with.
10:07 am
they forced ap to suspend their contract with him, these journalists lost their jobs because of the biased rules the western media is applying, they label journalists support the palestinian cause as terrorist supporters and dangerous, while reporters on the russia ukraine war reveal their stance on live television without worry. so many times, when war comes to a country, when refugees are created because some greedy despot wants to take something over. journalists covering the aggression on gaza are accused of bias with just the slightest expression of opinion. this. have issued such policy when it came to palestine and told journalists that despite your personal opinions, you're not allowed to say anything that could look unbalanced, and this is exactly what they have told me. however, when putin invaded ukraine, no such policy was shared. when i challenged the

senior leader who um, who i was on the phone call with about this, he actually told me that uh, he is not even aware of my posts online about... brain, which exactly proves my point, there is no supervision when it comes to other topics rather than israel, supervision and controlling of freedom of speech only comes up when you're criticizing israel, if you're criticizing putin, you're free to do so. this is the truth about freedom of speech in the western media, it will apply selectively, but journalists who are craving to tell the truth didn't give up. they chose other platforms. other than mainstream outlets, they go directly to their audience on social media and show them what the gaza war actually looks like. hey everyone, this is besam from gaza. i'm still alive. i'm surviving after the day three after h. social media played a significant
10:09 am
role this time for journalists and overall for informing about the palestinian genocide. some reporters shared their raw footage of genocide and war on people. in gaza the situation is just getting worse, there are literally no words to describe what's happening, he said like i literally have a little bit, a little a little little bit of internet, however censorship followed them on social media. on november 9th,
10:10 am
blustier's friend posted message saying that blastier's account was hacked and she couldn't access her account, ers tried to spread scam donation links through belestia's account. eventually she took back her account. it happened to more palestinian accounts. yara eid, another distinguished palestinian journalist, suggested that these incidents might be politically motivated cyber attacks, but there are other ways of censoring journalists on the internet, more automated ways, more vague ways, the corporate way. december 8th, ahmad shahabuddeen, an emi award winner, wrote on his x account that he lost his instagram account for the fifth time since october 7th. social media companies are actively trying to ban and suppress pro-palestinian content on
10:11 am
their platforms. in an article titled meter's broken promise, systemic censorship of palestine content on instagram and facebook, they made a list of ways they censor content. one, removing posts, stories, and comments. lot of pro- palestinian users and influencers have seen their content removed. two, suspending or permanently disabling accounts. i just went on tiktok and said, this is my new account. boom, three seconds. that's all all the time that it took, three seconds. three: restricting the ability to engage with content such as liking, commenting, sharing, and reposting on stories. four: restricting the ability to follow or tag other accounts. five: restricting the use of certain features such as instagram, facebook live, monetization and the recommendation of accounts. and six: shadow banning. what
10:12 am
exactly is shadow banning? shadow band. shadow banning is the newest, slickest, and most mysterious form of censorship on the internet. it's the latest tool for western countries to simultaneously censor and keep the freedom of speech facade. shadow banning is like normal ban, except that the user. not notice it. in normal ban, the user will be notified on the change in their account status. however, in shadow ban, the user will not be notified. in normal ban, the user's access to the service will be blocked, but in shadow ban, they let the user use the account and do all kinds of activities, like posts and comments, but after a while they'll find out that nobody is seeing their post. in traditional ban, "the corporation will take the responsibility, however, in shadow ban,
10:13 am
they don't see the need to explain what happened to the account, and just deny the existence of shadow ban. shadow ban is vague, you cannot prove that you are banned. it takes time to find out what's happening. it has so many faces and methods, and this is why people cannot describe it or prove it. matt tabi, an independent journalist, is one the few'. people who could find evidence of shadow banning between leaked twitter files. there were a whole bunch of us in this room. the first thing that we found out. um, i think the the first significant report had to do with um shadow banning, what they call visibility filtering at twitter. if you go back and look, you'll see in 2018, twitter actually released a a blog post. uh, i think it was called setting the record straight about shadow banning, and it said something
10:14 am
along the lines of people often ask, do we shadow ban, we do not, that's how it starts, and then it goes to kind of say in other words that yes, they do shadow band, but they never actually use the term. well, um, we found out pretty early on that not only do they shadow ben, but they have this unbelievably extensive toolbox. that they can apply that basically gives this company and pretty much every other social media company the ability to amplify any individual voice all the way up to seen by everybody and all the way down to not seen by anybody, even by people who are searching specifically for that name. shadow banning is one of the effective ways of censorship on the internet and they will use it again in the future. me while corporations like meta will never admit to bans and just call it a bug. it seems to

did you know that you're a hero for being here? did you know that? i did know. i'm telling you now there's people that are way older than you that was scared to be here. very proud of you. however, american social media companies are forced to censor more directly. according to forbes, israel's cyber. sent meta and other platforms 800 content takedown requests since october 7th, 2023. social media companies are complying more than ever, and israel is pushing more than ever, all under the ban of freedom of speech. the constant efforts of users and journalists in social media to inform the world about palestinian genocide makes them go direct. israel does heenous things and commits crime. times in daylight, like killing journalists, as of may 28, 105
10:17 am
journalists have been killed. this is the deadliest war in. mystery for people with blue vests. but only 120 km away from gaza in the occupied territories, israel is harassing journalists in another way that nobody seems to be talking about. hatem hamdan is a freelance journalist and photographer. on december 16th, israeli forces arrested him at the awarta checkpoint.
10:18 am
they seized his car and haven't freeed him yet. hartham is only. the journalists arrested in the west bank. israeli forces go door to door, terrify neighbors and arrest palestinian journalists. innepolis, samaya jawabra was arrested while she was seven months pregnant. she's a journalist, but with no phone, internet or access to the field. samiah was in her seventh month of pregnancy, so we were worried about her. we thought at first she's allowed to work from home, but then we were surprised to see the courts ruling, who lost his left eye in 2019 by israeli bullets, was detained for six months. you are speaking as a journalist who was who lost his eye, as the bullet is still resting in his skull, he is intentionally battered on
10:19 am
his head despite the fact that he is detained behind. and israeli bars and the list keeps going, these are all of the journalists arrested by israeli forces without apparent reason. 45 palestinian journalists behind israeli bars at the moment, more than 60 um arrested since october the 17th, and nobody's talking about this level of suppression in the west bank, because they won't let media agencies work freely. in the israeli regime's army, there is a unit called " israeli military censor. kobe mandelblitz is the current head of this unit. he sent this memo to all of the active news agencies in israel, saying that they should censor all these eight topics. in nutshell, news agencies cannot talk about israeli weapons, military aggressions and captives. they should submit
10:20 am
their pieces before publication to the military sensor unit. according to the memo, is... esaly media even those active in the west bank, cannot say anything about what the regime's army is doing in the war. they cannot talk about their war crimes, or say a word about their deliberate targeting of civilian areas. there is another point about this memo: it's written in english, not in hebrew or arabic. it means this memo is sent to all of the active news agencies, not just local ones. this is probably sent to offices of foreign

media agencies like ap, the bbc and the new york times. many of these companies are caving. into the israeli censorship while lecturing muslim journalists about impartiality. impartiality was one of the reasons that msnbc canceled three of its shows with muslim presenters. one of them was mehdi hassan. ladies and gentlemen, good evening. lovely to see you all here tonight. mehdi hassan is famous journalist in the united states known for heated debates, challenging questions, and supporting islamic views and muslims. "i do follow a religion in which 113 out of the 114 chapters of the quran begins by introducing the god of islam as a god of mercy and compassion. since october 7th, he's been defending palestinians and debunking israeli lies, but you've got dead garzans, the american government say maybe more than 11,00. you got a record number of journalists killed according to the cpj, a record number of un workers killed
10:22 am
according to the un. how many americans understand or even know about the israeli military center about how much information? was controlled, but this wasn't pleasant for nbc. they cancelled his show and announced he could no longer cover the israel palestine war. after that, maty parted ways with msnbc. tonight is not just my final episode of the made hassan show. it's my last day with msnbc, for one last time on this network. good night. he felt frustrated by the western media, and he wasn't the only one who felt frustrated. in germany there is a big media company called axel springer. a 22-year-old lebanese immigrant named kasim rad was hired. as a multimedia apprentice at excel springer early september. shortly after that, october 7th happened. kassem found himself in a
10:23 am
confusing situation. he had questions about the company stance on the conflict. he heard that they told journalists on some branches to downplay the palestinian deaths. the editorial team wrote an internal article that "we stand with israel". karsem questioned the company stance and the article. the feedback from his bosses was brutal. they shut his objection down quickly, but this didn't solve anything for him. he decided to do his investigations about headlines like decapitated babies that western media ran all day. he wanted to fight back, so he made a video and debunked the israeli propaganda on his personal youtube channel. wie erzeugt israel lügen? he fought back, like hassan,
10:24 am
zahra, nadar, jackson, and so many others. two days later, axel springer fired him. they didn't tolerate kasem's questioning, and this is something that has been repeated throughout history. israel is censoring the truth 24/7 and this is not the first time. the history of the israeli genocidal campaign does not date back to october 7th. they've been doing it for many decades. they assassinated qassan khanafani. on the 8th of july 1972. canafani and his niece were killed in a car bomb outside his home. they shot sheren abu aklar to death. breaking news overnight a reporter for the... network was shot and killed while covering an israeli rade in the west bank and silenced many more others, but this time it's different,
10:25 am
people in the west have risen up to support palestine more than any other time. they did their best to suppress them, but more people took to social media, to the streets and to college campuses to support palestine. college campuses around the world have ignited in a global uprising of students protesting israel's assault on gaza. police have issued a dispersal order on the usc campus. they've warned students that if they remain here, they will be arrested. all those
10:26 am
journalists kept fighting. zahrah is still trying to pursue her journalism on instagram and she's helping gazan refugees to settle in toronto. nadar is pursuing her case in court and sued the bbc for their unprofessionalism. jackson frank has more followers on ex social media platform and will continue to support palestine as long as he can. even though blessia is now outside of gaza, she's doing everything she can to narrate the stories of people in gaza in the media and universities. only in ghazza you sleep counting rockets rather than stars. you wake up if you woke up on the sounds of bombs rather than birds. mehdi hasan decided to found his own media company, zateo to, to beat censorship. i'm back with a whole new media company, in fact, my own. we're calling it zeteo, the ancient
10:27 am
greek word that goes back to socrates and plato, which means to seek out, to inquire, to get to the truth. despite all these efforts by the israeli regime and western media, to suppress the voices of palestine, something phenomenal happened. people have stood with palestine. and once again revealed how hollow the freedom of speech claim in western countries is in the darkest days for journalism, their voice was heard louder and clearer than ever. this irony can only have one reason: the voices of palestine cannot be silenced.
10:28 am
how designs come from across the world to palestine to occupy a land belonging to another nation, how do they form their secret army, hagana? how do they grab lands belonging to palestinians? how did they build? ban their illegal settlements. israel's former prime minister goldomir answers these and more questions in this documentary.

first of the headlines, hezbollah's rocket barages strike is bases and settlements, including major military intelligence base near tel aviv. this was indiscriminated strikes kill more women and children across gaza, raising the death doll from the regime's genocide to over 41,900. and the new report says the us has spent nearly $8 billion on military aid to israel,
