post cover ups of the war in afghanistan the classified documents were handed to three newspapers by the whistle blowing web site wiki leaks they include reports about the deaths of hundreds of civilians increase taliban attacks as well as nato fears that pakistan and iran are backing the insurgency artie's laura emmott from london. this is essentially a detailed account of the last sixty six years of the war in afghanistan that begins at the beginning of two thousand and four and right at the end of two thousand and nine these ninety thousand documents many of them refer to the toll that the afghan war has taken on civilians that are hundred forty four details incidents of the deaths of civilians during this conflict some of them have been from controversial as strikes that we've already seen a lot of in the news in that the afghan government has complained about what some of them also with us from something as simple as troops. oh no i'm civilians on the streets are the drivers of cars over the drivers of motorcycles because they
1:02 pm
wrongly thought that they could be suicide bombers there's details in these reports of one hundred ninety five civilians killed and one hundred seventy four wounded but that's considered to be a massive underestimate that there are we assuming all that have not been revealed by these documents also something very worrying about pakistan or pakistan receives the billion dollars from the u.s. government actually supports the projects against afghan insurgency but what we're seeing from these documents is in fact that the pakistani spy service appears to be holding secret meetings with the taliban in order to organize the militant groups that are fighting u.s. soldiers that are just some of the things that we can see in these documents the real story of this material is that it's it's one thing after another.

insurgent. forces he said that he was expecting that people whose abuse he had exposed would come out and criticize him essentially shooting the messenger and he also denied the fact that these leaks would cool. is there any kind of operational insecurity or danger for the troops that are on the ground who said all the documents that he's really star seven months old and so have no real bearing on what's going on operationally in afghanistan at the moment he said that he had a whole minimization process that those were his words he also defended the reliability of these documents he said there are instructions on the wiki leaks websites about how to read these documents obviously we should exercise caution while reading them but he's confident that they are all accurate account. criticized by the white house which says the release of information threatens u.s. national security our correspondent in washington christine has the details. the
1:04 pm
white house today both criticizing and downplaying the release of these documents the national security adviser jim jones saying that anything that is published that would put the lives of americans and our partners in danger the white house condemns this but he's also downplaying the significance of it he says that these reports come from a period of time between january of two thousand and four and december of two thousand and nine. downplaying this this is of course been expected by the united states and officials here that wiki leaks would release this of course after just a few months ago we saw the release of that helicopter cockpit video that showed the shooting and in many cases the remorseful actions by some pilots from the united states army do you know officials here have known that this was going to be released and they said these documents ninety thousand of them have not only told
1:05 pm
us anything that we didn't know we knew that there were some situations in which case pakistan was working with the taliban but essentially they're sort of trying to downplay it as well i want to point out one other thing senator john kerry this is a long time senator from massachusetts here in the u.s. senate one time presidential candidate he is not taking the same view as the white house he's saying however illegally these documents were obtained or put off this should essentially be a wake up call he says this should teach us that we need to sort of up our ante up the effort to get the policy right and also make it more urgent. well to discuss the wiki leaks story joined by the stop the war coalition. is the information on wiki leaks. yes i said hoping you could hear because i don't think we've actually got the sun
1:06 pm
connection through to him more time mr brand can you hear me it's kevin out in moscow. oh you can great lovely stuff i'm glad we got liam food we got the line through to you i don't think you called a question just now of what i was asking you we've just seen the background to this story today i'm asking you how credible do you think this information is on wiki leaks. well i think it's very credible i think that this is a bombshell i think it's the equivalent of daniel ellsberg release of the pentagon papers in one thousand nine hundred ninety it's the beginning of the end this is a war that's already been lost the politicians know it's been lost what these documents reveal is that they've concealed that fact from the american people and they're sending more and more troops tens of thousands more troops to kill and to be to be killed in a war that they know can't be won and the reason they're doing it is that they don't want to take responsibility as nixon did not want to take responsibility in vietnam for a military setback and millions of people will be paying some kind of price in
1:07 pm
national treasure of course the blood loss for afghan civilians for american g.i.'s i think this will have an explosive effect on her on the american public which already has turned against the war well i guess i'm surprised as we heard just now the white house has accused wiki leaks of putting american soldiers who are currently in afghanistan in danger do you think that is justified after all this information is at least seven months old. well the obama administration's pronouncement is like an alice in wonderland turning reality upside down they are the ones who are putting american soldiers and afghans lives at risk and in fact taking those lives every day in a war that they know can't be won and yet when wiki leaks and people who are whistleblowers tell the truth then this sort of explanation from the white house is that these people who are telling the truth exposing the lies are the ones putting the people's lives and in danger i mean that is so ludicrous such nonsense but
1:08 pm
because of the tepid character of the the propaganda nature of the u.s. corporate media that line will be promulgated time and time again today and tomorrow and in the coming days but i don't think the american people will believe that is what i want to know the truth is really mall as you think of this theory been hearing today that maybe just maybe the american military could themselves be on this lead to further the military expansion into pakistan for instance. well we know in the antiwar movement that we're getting more and more support from people within the u.s. military of course mainly from enlisted people who know that the war is a lie they don't read the newspaper and learn about the war they're learning that day in and day out they know about the deaths of civilians they know about the fact that the country has turned against the nato u.s. occupation they know it's the mere presence of these troops that are the catalyst for a growing insurgency and so many of them are turning against the war could it be people from within the military undoubtedly just as happened during vietnam the military of the united states is split many you know that it's it's
1:09 pm
a lost cause it's unwinnable and the politicians both in uniform and outside of uniform who are refusing to take responsibility for the setback and sending these people to their death and so of course inside the military people are rising up against what i would like to do your views on the news channel. robert fisk the middle east correspondent for the british daily the independent uses the internet stepping on the toes of newspaper and t.v. journalism now. we've got all these expensive newspapers with huge investigative staffs watching the new york times in london in france and yet we didn't get this story it was the internet that got it this is the most important proof so far that in many ways newspaper journalism is retreating and going along with authority please can i be embedded i mean i'm not a baby but please can i be embedded can i go with the tenth mountain division can i be with the british army and these reporters are not getting the story and these

people this week leaks organization which i have some serious concerns they have managed to do it on a mass spoke scale we've never seen recently in modern newspaper journalism or television journalism this i think it's one of the lessons for us journalists. we got more on this story in the program ahead and also this hour. this is a baby box if a mother wanted to leave her child all shook up to do would be to pull of the handle and put the child inside it is designed they say to save infants lives but critics say it's encouraging women to give up their children report on that plus. our next story it is ten years since the international space station became suitable for crews to both live and work in new russian and american life support systems also made more research could be carried out at the i assess sean thomas went to witness some of the wonders of space engineering. it circles the globe
1:11 pm
about three hundred fifty kilometers from the earth's surface it is the largest construction in space it is a marvel of modern engineering which is approaching a crucial milestone one of the i assess is a major contemporary space project it has a huge mass of around three hundred eighty tons it involves a big number of program participants including the united states canada european countries belonging to the european space agency and japan and the station is being used as a big scientific laboratory. though it is a prime example of international cooperation now the roots of the station stem from the apollo soyuz program thirty five years ago when two rival space programs of the u.s. and soviet union integrated technology for the first time twenty years later russia and the u.s. expanded on that shared experience with the goal of creating a permanent space presence. we've done a lot with in the mir shuttle program which was the ancestor of the international
1:12 pm
space station we work hard to ride similes operation of both the mir orbital station and preparation for the. i remember those years the most interesting period of strenuous work which finally did to this great result during the link up there were no hiccups everything went smoothly. this is the mark up of the capsule which is where astronauts and cosmonauts come to train at star city who are traveling to the international space station and it is in here that you get a sense of the significance of this capsule in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight the zarya and the unity capsules war and watch but it wasn't until ten years ago when the capsule was attached that the space station became livable. i'd say was a foundation of sorts for the rest of the station if the module had failed then other systems work would be pointless since the module consisted largely of life support systems the module made it possible for their crew to stay in both the
1:13 pm
station would be impossible to build the station at the pace it was constructed at without the special part of the infrastructure was now in place it was up to the station's first crew to get everything in motion. the first two weeks were critical since a lot of the systems were being activated for the first time some russian system segments were merged with us systems those machines had never seen each other in earth and that was the first time they would work together there's dance ability was huge and that was why the crew had been composed of experienced cosmonauts. ten years on the i.s.o.'s is approaching the record for a structure being continuously inhabited in space and on are currently held by russia's mir project and while it was originally only supposed to be in service until two thousand and fifteen it looks like a bright future for the international space station. but in another i assess members decided to prolong the station's use until twenty twenty and possibly even longer if the technical state of the station is good for. ensuring
1:14 pm
a continued international presence in space for many more years to come john thomas r.t. moscow we've got greetings from the current crew of the i assess as well fyodor yurchikhin the russian flight engineer tells us earthlings about the advantages of life in space. we're glad to be working here in our space office is the best window view you know traffic jams on the way to work and although there are not many people around and space aliens haven't visited us yet we're never bored and luckily we are far away from the heat. abandoned babies are often found in strange and sad place and sometimes even discarded like rubbish and in the czech republic it has been five years since a special facility was set up for women to give away their newborn children the so-called baby box and sparked protests from clergymen and even doctors encourages mothers to abandon their babies. there all around the czech republic
1:15 pm
at first sight just nondescript metal doors on the sides of hospitals and government buildings but they've already helped to save dozens of lives this is a baby box if a mother wanted to leave her child or should have to do would be to pull on this handle and put the child inside now it doesn't just the metal container and infant would be able to survive here for several hours but usually they're rescued within several minutes by those on the other side the first one was placed in this private hospital it's still the most popular with nearly fifteen children left here in five years now so maybe books missing as the babies placed inside the door locks on the outside and in the army settle i remember running to the box for the first time to see the baby inside and showing it to the doctor to be examined by special i think it is an amazing invention. the baby books and learned is
1:16 pm
not a doctor but a writer and horse breeder but his idea was not immediately well received with protests from some clergyman and even doctors. though the baby books is high tech with three hundred twenty parts special places to leave unwanted children existed even in ancient times. but the government was wary of the baby books and didn't provide funding as if i was encouraging people to get rid of their children know the perception has changed. but it is life and christina have dated for two years and run a hostel in prague although they can have children of their own also like to adopt a baby box child. come from a big family of four brothers and three forty cousins. nephews who would be so willing to do they do not know where or when but sure enough it is a matter of time before someone doesn't want the child will become a welcome addition to their family. r.t.
