a support the legalization of marijuana supporters of legalization which is on the california ballot in two thousand and ten are trying to place ads on the social networking site but they've run in to a little bit of a problem facebook initially accepted ads from the group just say now and ran them for about a week in which time the groups fan page grew to some six thousand members but then they were about abruptly removed facebook says that the ad was pulled because the ad had an image of a leaf now the company says it is partly as classified as a tobacco product so therefore it's unacceptable under their policies and the just say now campaign is arguing with facebook saying that their ad is for marijuana not tobacco and therefore should be allowed on the site you know without a doubt the ad being removed from facebook is a blow to the organization's efforts to get pot legalized in california the group was using this site to gather signatures on college can't college campuses and to register young people to vote so what i think is

a really interesting here is how and when facebook decides to be a progressive company when it comes to trampling on users' privacy well then facebook invokes its role of being on the cutting edge of privacy norms but then when it comes to allowing an ad for legalization or just say now calls at the end of probation with a marijuana leave in the logo a movement that is gaining a lot of traction in the quote mainstream america while that may just go back fifty years or so i think it's time to choose facebook what type of company you are are you modern are you cutting edge and progressive or are you a censoring old timer. now when it comes. the economy seems like all the news that we ever hear is negative u.s. home sales are at their lowest level in more than a decade wages are falling to the point that it's cheaper to hire americans for call centers and workers in india which i think might actually good thing and

c.n.n. money is warning of five more investing levels that are about to pop so should we be scared or should we just read between the lines and realize that perhaps american culture is changing to a more stable secure and smart way here to discuss it with me as anthony ran down as a director of economic research for the reason foundation anthony thanks for being here and let's start with a story actually that i did not bring up in this introduction which is the fact that john boehner today came out gave a speech and he called for obama to fire his economic advisers pacifically tim geithner and larry summers now do you agree with this you know what do you think of this call to get them next well it's it's a political it's a political speech to. the leader of the republicans in the house of representatives is probably going to be the speaker of the house coming up he's saying this from a political spectrum but i think that what is being objective being objective and not coming from the republican sort of talking points if you look at what's

happened with the economy since obama took over the ministration likes to blame any bad things on the bush administration but we are nineteen months in that we're about all the way through one full two years in the economy is starting to look even worse than it was before there were some uptick in thing every day pretty much every indicator is saying we've got some bad things coming up so what is it if if the economy is not looking good somebody is going to take the blame for it of course and that's why my question is is this really about tim geithner or is just about the fact that anybody who would be the treasury secretary at this moment probably you know would obviously get bad ratings and people would want to mount. i think i think that that's a fair percentage of the you know they want it. and i think it's absolutely fair that you can't put everything on tim geithner you can put everything on larry summers and christina romer but personally i think that their response has been completely wrong and what they have done is they put it like

a lot of short term growth in the first sort of first year of the obama administration to try to gain the p.r. and it hasn't worked out long term even if there's a lot of bad things that are not out that are outside of their control what tim geithner and larry summers and even ben bernanke have done to control the economy and to try and push this forward i think it's been a mistake. to say that he should be fired doesn't talk about who are going to replace him with i mean. tim geithner is not the worst person that could be in that job so they could fire him put him so now. i want to talk about the fact that like i said home sales are at their lowest level in more than a decade and this is despite the fact that right now home prices are down the market really is horrible to despite the fact that interest rates are incredibly incredibly low so why do you think that is that the home prices are still so we do have to take what came out was the numbers on existing home sales and they dropped

twenty five percent from last year at this point twenty seven percent from last month and it's the lowest point they've been fifteen years so that is a really really dismal market one of the reasons that it's like that is that there's been a lot of homes purchased in the past eighteen months because of the first time home buyers credit a number of other government subsidies that have tried to encourage people to buy homes but in the process of trying to encourage people to buy homes they've taken a lot of demand from the future and they've stuck it last year and they stuck it in january of this year and they stuck it in april of this year so prices kind of went up and now they're falling down no one's buying a home right now because everybody that was going to buy a home now it was going to buy a home for the rest of this year has already bought their house and so we basically juice the no. to try and show that the housing market is recovering and now we see that actually it's not recovery there's a lot of latency there's a lot of negative things that are going on in the housing market and it's going to it's going to be a problem but tell me this i mean is it really so bad that people aren't buying homes you know because you could say that in

a lot of ways the american lifestyle really was one that no longer subscribe to reality you know a lot of people would say the idea that every american family needs to own a home just isn't isn't realistic you know so so could we be now you know it look at these numbers and they're dismal maybe could this be you know starting some huge shift in the way that americans approach their living on their lifestyle that this could absolutely be a new normal and if that's the case i'm actually completely on board with that the problems with that r.'s that there's losses in the economy and it kind of drags out the recovery but if we're really to accept that as you just said we live in a new economy in the twenty first century we're more mobile the whole concept of home ownership in the value of what we thought it all of that stuff is being pushed away and it may not be the best thing for everybody to own a home now so it just may be that the new normal for the housing market is going to be much lower than it was before it's certainly going to be a lot lower than two thousand and five and two thousand and six when we were juicing the housing bubble with a lot of free money so if this is the new normal and that's what people's people

are really demanding i'm all for that and i think that's a good thing we just have to be willing to accept that market as american people and not complain that people are not buying homes it's bad enough and we can we can without government as you know i don't know i don't think it would be the worst thing either now you're thinking of bubbles you know the housing bubble. first a horrible example but these days you know there are we have all kinds of warnings there's a new report today that came out telling us about five new bubbles that investors should worry about and it covered everything from cotton to goal of to the entire chinese economy you know and i just what all of a sudden we are all so scared and we're constantly looking a bubbles you know is this a good thing to you because. you know we had this huge crashing it made before no one actually realized things couldn't be good for ever and eventually things are going to crash so you know is that a positive or is it a negative because now we're just always anticipating bubbles that may or may not pop well people have more people in the market have always even before this big

financial crash have there been always people pointing at this point to a bubble or this is this stock is too high we're using the language of bubbles now because it's sort of in the new lingua franca but people have always said ok well this stock is too high or the market's too high it's going to crash again but what is the average person is seeing this you know flash paper is every day it's it is now normal to be pessimistic it's safer to be pessimistic it's safer to say look you know gold has been rising continuously it's gonna fall at some point which is a safe bet because if it keeps going up nobody's going to come back to you and complain whereas if you say gold's going to go up for the next ten years in a crash is that everybody points at you so everybody kind of saw that it was a mistake for most of financial experts to not find housing bubble but here's the thing it is really really difficult to try and predict anything that's going on stocks and i was in college a professor who tried to make this point by putting up some slides on the screen and he showed a line input of dates on the base is this is the s. and p.

and it's going up and it stops at the edge of screen says now would you buy at this market or sell there but as well we would probably buy it's going up and then it puts the rest of the line it was actually the dot com bubble and then the rest of the chart kind of collapses around every now and then he puts up another chart with the lines going down and he says would you buy this and we said well no it's going down in the in the he puts up the rest of the chart it was wal-mart right at the beginning and it spikes appraiser earns five hundred percent over the next couple years. it's really difficult to try to predict these things so people are going to be they're going to be pessimistic right now there's some good reason to be pessimistic i think the chinese economy is going to fall apart so that's you know i think that's one of the i would agree with an addict ability is definitely you know it's not funny everything. so. about tonight's show my own kludged moment over equal rights for women when it comes to going topless in public and the tea party guide to surviving d.c. a male that's making headlines for telling tea baggers to avoid metro rail and to be careful because arabs and black people also happen to live in the district well

much time calling out this organizations idiocy all i can say is that this is going to encourage anyone who is on the fence about this issue to vote against the boneheads who think that a fetus suffers hardships like the slaves did campaign ad it failed. now moving on from that the tea party is coming to town thanks to glenn beck planning a massive event this weekend on the anniversary of martin luther king jr's i have a dream speech but it seems that the fearless tea party patriots are a little scared for their nation's capital not because of all the evils dalgleish of politicians but because of all the black people that's right there's been a guy distributed on line for the tea partiers to teach them about where in the city is safe to go what metro lines will keep them in the non scary parts and well for us d.c. residents it's kind of funny so i brought in someone who knows the city even better than myself to tell us exactly what they'll be avoiding by following these
