there is a general order trend here of. government and traditional journalism big media. to draw a circle around the first amendment and say that it only applies to big media and the common person just sitting in his home writing a blog some of it is no joy to see protections which i think is outrageous the constitution doesn't say anything about the new york times it just says everybody is free. well that is true and but in that case you know so far the new york times the washington post the main cable news channels are also supporting this shield law so it is that wrong should they not be in support of it are they throwing certain people under the bus or are they just taking what they can get right now the little pieces i think i think the latter interpretation is correct i think they're just they're just taking what they can get it is a climate of fear and they're not really willing to stand up and say that everybody enjoys protection but why do you think that is happening in this country and why is
11:31 pm
it these days that you have to take little pieces you know to enjoy your first amendment rights to have freedom of speech you have to nibble at what the government gives you. i think there's too much money on the line. when you go in with multibillion dollar corporations that are. publicly traded the obligation to the stockholder to lose or increase profits becomes more important then journalistic freedom at times at least. i also think it is just a perception that it's better to take a little bit there and get nothing at all have to lose the spirit none i don't think you can really compromise on these issues of principle but. yeah i'm definitely with you there you know it seems like a scary development these days that we have more and more examples yesterday we spoke about craigslist you yourself have written about craigslist an exam as an example that falls under this umbrella act also that falls under this that you know
11:32 pm
freedom of speech all of a sudden has become no longer a right but a privilege which thanks so much for joining us. thank you you thank. still to come on tonight's show obama was in the midwest today again calling for more spending to help the economy but can we spend our way out of this economic and economic nightmare i'll speak with business insider joe wiesenthal in just a minute. washington pilots are being hailed as heroes after managing to crash land a crippled passenger jet at a remote airfield in northwestern russia saving everyone on board as the aircraft flew at a height of ten thousand the fuel pump navigation and communication systems were suddenly paralyzed the crew glided the two one fifty four to a lower altitude and landed at this news strip the plane eventually came to a halt and would when the emergency services helped passengers to safety.

anyone serious about solving global problems such as nuclear proliferation knew that without russia and the united states working together little would be achieved u.s. secretary of state says russia is a vital partner when it comes to solving global problems speaking to the council on foreign relations in washington hillary clinton spoke about wanting to promote the lacings with russia and the rest of the world she stressed that only through partnership in issues like nuclear disarmament and global terrorism the result. britain's special envoy to afghanistan has stepped down from his position been speculation he was forced out sir share our calls was an outspoken critic of the military policy in the country advocating opening dialogue with the taliban responsible for coordinating strategy in the region he was well known for his strong criticism of the u.s. led surge in afghanistan. let's look at your headlines this hour in just thirty
11:34 pm
minutes our team is proud to bring you live coverage of the global policy forum in the russian city. but first we return to the only on the show to discover why your cell phone may not be as private as you think. it's time for my unplugged moment tonight and it has to deal with burn the koran day see pastor terry jones plans to hold international burn a koran days he's calling it this saturday september eleventh we've spoken about it at length on this show we've spoken to pastor terry jones himself and the move has obviously drawn our from the white house from the pentagon from religious leaders in america all the way over to the pope and general david petraeus who's leading u.s. troops in afghanistan says that this qur'an burning will only profit the cause of radical islam and put the lives of american troops in danger now over the weekend massive protests were held across afghanistan where as the g.'s
11:35 pm
a pastor jones were burned along with american flags you see just the talk of burning the koran led to these protests can you imagine what will happen if this actually takes place and here's the really scary part even pamela geller who's been interviewed on this show numerous times about her opposition to the so-called ground zero mosque even she says that burning the koran is wrong but here's the part of my unplugged moment that's got me fired up so u.s. general has said this stunt that's what it is it's just a stunt could cause harm to our troops so where the hell is the republican party on this issue why hasn't every single republican member of congress issued a news release condemning the pastor where is former president george w. bush on this issue they all tell you this all give bush credit after nine eleven attacks he kept his party in line he urged americans to treat all muslims living in this country with respect here's bush just fifteen days after the september
11:36 pm
eleventh attacks talking about the need for understanding of all faiths proud of the muslim leaders across america. and about all the issues of good america be strong but that america repeat the value should texted me to show you me different that you should respect. the freedom to worship the way you see fit. now bush also made sure to come out right after the attacks on nine eleven to call islam a religion of peace so as not to equate the entire religion with terrorism but where is bush now and for that matter where are other leaders in the g.o.p. i'm calling senator mitch mcconnell sarah pailin newt gingrich mitt romney might huckabee michael steele where are every single one of you your silence is very telling see during the height of the iraq war anybody who might have been the slightest bit critical of the bush white house face the wrath of the g.o.p.
11:37 pm
on the cable news channels they were called names they were say to not be patriotic for the fact that they didn't support our troops in a time of war so now you're just sitting back and watching a crazy pastor put soldiers' lives at risk and you have nothing to say shame on you you know finally today one leader in the republican party did condemn pastor jones. well listen i just think it's not wise to do this in the face of what our country really represents and over and that you know little wrangling to even get him to say that but when house minority leader john boehner becomes the voice of reason for your party that's just pathetic what happened to all of you boucle so-called patriots who believe in doing whatever it takes to keep america safe your silence makes your hypocrisy very very clear so i guess thank you for making it so easy for us to point out. now gearing up for the
11:38 pm
november midterm elections in which many are expecting democrats to get crushed barack obama sounded like he was back on the campaign trail today on veiling his new economic stimulus plan that includes fifty billion dollars to spend on infrastructure and it allows businesses to write off the full value of new equipment purchases he also made sure to point out the businesses are something that republicans always support so that if they oppose this plan it will be because of politics and the desire for him to fail pure and simple but you ask around and you know americans are really feeling the effects of the first stimulus bill so is another one really going to the economy out of the hole and politically is this speech this plan this attitude too little too late when joining me from our new york studio to discuss that is joe weisenthal deputy editor of the business insider joe thanks so much for joining me you know the first things first obama's new
11:39 pm
proposal they're not calling it a stimulus for some reason they're just too scared to use that word but i mean you know let's get it straight this is a stimulus is it not. it's really strange i guess the word stimulus has been so so lead by the failure of the first plan to actually turn the economy around that now the word but it's really hard to figure out what the difference is between this and what a stimulus would be there's a infrastructure bank there's infrastructure spending there are tax cuts there are sort of goodies for business isn't there so it's a stimulus i really don't know why what the big deal is and i don't think anyone is really going to be fooled this is kind of a mini version of the first of ok so if we may call it a stimulus then do you think it's going to work do you think putting fifty billion more towards infrastructure and giving businesses these these goodies as you call them is going to help the economy. no i think it's always better filling is trying hard to figure out what exactly he's going for it's too small to work even though
11:40 pm
a lot of his allies have been pushing for. more stimulus if you go on the biggest stimulus cheerleader of paul crewman just everyone thinks it's way too small to have any impact both on the tax cut side or the spending side and the other thing is it's doesn't even seem like it's all that good politics in the sense that it's not clear most americans don't really have a good sense of what's going on they won't feel like they're getting a tax cut right away or anything so it's not good economics and it's not good politics the only thing that kind of makes sense is that basically he wants to create a set of issues that will create a wage between him and john boehner he needs an enemy he needs someone he can fight with because when you can camp own campaign mode he's actually pretty good well it doesn't it sound like he was in campaign mode today i think that he personally attacked john boehner seven times you know during this one speech he went for the tan guy there but do you think that this is coming a little too like you know too little too late like i said i mean this is if you
11:41 pm
know congress even looks at this plan here they're only going to have three weeks to potentially get it passed before the elections so they can make any difference. no it's not going to get passed no one really thinks it does and it does seem like this whole obama versus boehner thing is pretty contrived it kind of came out of nowhere but it seems like it was just a decision that the white house has made that we really need and we need someone to run against and so they're going to make sure the focus of it it may be going to be some value in doing that but it did seem silly to mention boehner so many times john boehner isn't the reason that americans are so frustrated with the economy i don't i think it's going to be tough to pin it on him on the other you know and this is not going to have any effect before the november election i think probably the best hope is that this kind of starts the divide that will have the real battles which will begin after the november election after democrats sort of get wiped off the table and then for two years obama will run aggressively against
11:42 pm
speaker boehner with the hope that that will catapult him to reelection in two thousand and twelve now what do you make of his decision here with the tax cuts the fact that he is not going to extend or you know he doesn't plan on extending the tax cuts for the rich. it in my mind is kind of a non-issue i mean the fact is that his excuse for not wanting to extend the tax cut is something of a lie he says we can't afford the seven hundred billion over ten years there's actually no basis for that it's not that much seven hundred billion sounds like a lot but over ten years compared to how much debt we're in and how much we're spending it's really bad big of a deal so it's and then the other hand he's probably right that that money left in the hands of the wealthy probably wouldn't lead to that much economic activity it's a bit of a non issue but i actually begins a bad move politically i think people don't really people respond to simplicity you say we're going to keep tax cuts across the board we're going to cut taxes across
11:43 pm
the board people understand that and i think people like that you start talking about different where you fall over or do you make over two hundred fifty thousand you don't get them or you're a small business as soon as you start complicating the matters i think it falls politically i don't think obama's getting very good political advice right now to be honest yeah i mean it does seem like that would be really confusing for people because on one hand it's you know i thought the republicans were the ones that were writing this populist wave right now and yet they're still kind of cheering for the return not necessarily saying it should all be about the middle class and the lower class in america and yet obama the liberal elitist is it says oh it's definitely a political nightmare but let's talk about something else you know because. you know the truth is the economy can't be fixed overnight and the truth is that there need to be some types of long term plans long term projects put into this for example fifty billion that he's putting into infrastructure into creating new roads you know do you think that things like that don't get credit i mean these are things that america needs and those do create jobs they just don't create them
11:44 pm
instantly. i figure i think it's conceivable that if we identified some serious infrastructural problems whether it's with our energy system or the where cities are laid out or the highway system in general that really could be rebuilt in such a way that when it's over america is much more efficient and runs better i think it's definitely possible that pursuing those kind of projects could actually improve the economy sustainably on a long term basis fifty billion dollars isn't going to cut it it would have to be huge project i mean paul krugman had a column this last week of the new york times and it was a little scary because he basically called for a project as big as world war two to get us out of this slump and it's really disturbing to think that we would need some kind of war something of that effort to get us out of you know the situation we're in but i could see you know very seriously directed resources to a project that i think you would be this you would have to one employ
11:45 pm
a lot of people you know in fairly short term but to what it was over that would actually have be a more competitive more better functioning economy so i could see a huge infrastructure project maybe something about trains or the power grid something like that that not only put people to work but when it was done america was in a much better shape yeah i want to say that you know you would hope we wouldn't have to have an entire war to pull us out of this mess because don't forget we're fighting two of them right now. all right joe thanks so much for joining us. well still to come on tonight's show the tea party is going to school. teachers partiers are going to learn politics while what my only question is then these people learn civics in high school on have a little fun on the issue with sarah but in cars and distant.
11:46 pm
11:47 pm
would be so much brighter if you knew more about song from funniest impression in some. stunts on t.v. dot com. a federal court. has laid out a new ruling for law enforcement accessing cell phone data say up until recently police have had restricted access to your cellphone data but civil liberty organizations decided that they were going to take this case to court in hopes of finally putting restrictions on them being able to retrieve all that out of the belongs to you now the ruling on this case came down on tuesday and well the results are messy the court says that law enforcement can be required to obtain
11:48 pm
a warrant for mobile phone tracking but it does not have to uphold the fourth amendment of probable cause in the process of investigation let's break this down after the case went to the federal court the judges decided the police can but are not required to get a warrant for checking your cell phone and they don't need to have a probable cause to do so does that seem strange to anyone else but me here to the courts compared this decision to united states v miller where people's bank statements can be tracked because they go through a third party the banks so in this case people don't technically own the phone because they go through a cell phone carrier or a service provider who intercepts all of their information usually without the customer even knowing it so as this ruling comes down i think it's pretty obvious that the details are ambiguous but surely i hope it will be sent back to the courts because in the meantime make sure that you're using your cell phone wisely you may have thought it was yours but according to this really ruling it's not. the

power of twitter what can't it do keep you in the in the know about the latest in everything keep you connected with your friends and help you escape from a hostage situation you heard me right a japanese journalist was held as a prisoner in afghanistan for five months by a group who was posing as the taliban now after months of imprisonment a journalist in the oka found a glimmer of hope when one of the militants had trouble using a cell phone and then asked the prisoner for help but being the great journalist that he is so he ok introduced these people to twitter and took the opportunity to then tweet about where he was being held captive he tweeted i am still alive but in jail and then wrote another tweet about where that jail is located now i have to say i just love this story and i really wish that i had a more bad-ass type of ending but eventually they recognize of the journalist was
11:50 pm
a muslim and he was let go it wasn't the fact that you know he got saved thanks to his incredible wit but here's the part that does sparked my interest these militants ones are supposedly clever and use crafty techniques to take down the enemy they got duped by a prisoner journalist and i can only imagine how this journalist felt when that cell phone was just handed to him you know the u.s. should take note of this there are more stupid militants out there within these organizations like these guys we should be taking advantage of it maybe maybe this japanese journalist here has just discovered the key to taking down al qaeda and the taliban are some good old fashioned trickery and it. well today a new travel fee is going to be implemented but it's not for americans certain tourists from thirty six countries are going to be subject to a tourism promotion fee of fourteen dollars mellotron it system for travel authorisation but the stas fee only applies to those who are using of these
11:51 pm
a waiver program to enter the u.s. now four dollars of the feed goes to maintaining the system while the rest of the money goes to promoting the u.s. as a tourist destination and now by promotion we mean advertisements hooking up travel journalists who write five star reviews once visiting that country as you can imagine critics are complaining about this they're arguing that it just doesn't make any sense to charge people extra when they've already expressed interest in visiting your country so why would you push away your potential customers this is business what i want people use tactics and techniques to draw in visitors not push them out now recent travel reports show that the us had six hundred thousand fewer tourists in two thousand and eight in comparison to two thousand so if the tourism rates are declining why do we charge them more surely if any other country out there started implementing a travel tax on the us we'd be pretty angry too so i guess this is just another one
11:52 pm
of those hidden fees that tourists are going to encounter when they come to visit welcome travelers to the usa now you pay in cash or will that be credit. well the tea party is going to school now it's right over the past three months the tea party and over fifteen different states seems to have been trying to shed its amateur image and take part in training sentients get to the nitty gritty of community organizing get out the vote drives and even fund raising all of that rather than spending money on all the time a large rallies now this is a move that i must say should be applauded but if the tea party all of a sudden get smart my only question is what will sarah palin do when joining me from our new york studio to discuss it is blogger saravanan cost to sarah thanks so much for joining us you know you and i have talked about this before the fact that all of a sudden politicians like sarah pailin the sharing goals of the world they were just making a killing off of sounding stupid i mean you know you even had to translate for
11:53 pm
mason since you speak hail it big god but here if the tea partiers now educate themselves what will these people do. well alone not oh i don't know if you know this about me but i actually used to be a public high school teacher and as a former teacher i can say that the tea partiers don't really show that much potential i don't think we really have to worry about them rising too far above the less than mediocre level of intelligence that they have thus far demonstrated they're going to be learning propagandized versions of american history they're going to be basically speaking back to themselves and saying what they want to hear and their facts will usually be incorrect well that is a good point there you know who are their teachers are going to make me a little worried too but you know what i wonder is if their heads are just going to burst once they hear some truth you know i have an example from one training
11:54 pm
session that took place for the tea partiers where they had a charge of a few of the past presidents and on their you know they they they spoke about their deficit. and they gave figures and here they had to explain to them that presidents you lie like ronald reagan your god ran large deficits to do you think that that's just good of blow their minds. i think there are probably counselors that made available to help them deal with the aftermath of that revelation facts are very terrifying to these people and they really need to be sort of sued into the world of reality even just a teensy bit of reality i think it probably blew their minds all over their faces. well you know i have to say that you know their fund raising now perhaps they're putting some money into education they're doing these get out the vote drives which you know also can be commended but in november come november do you think that this is going to hurt republicans or help them because could they realize that all these
11:55 pm
tea party candidates are kind of the loony but you know if they do are they going to over publicans are they going to vote for democrats. you know i think that a lot of republicans are going to stay home quite frankly and those who do show up i think the tea partiers are going to show up and mass i really do i think they've done an excellent job of with being everyone up into a frenzy but i think that a lot of republicans are moderates they tend to be more fiscally conservative and socially moderate some are even socially liberal and i think that a lot of them are embarrassed by what this fringe wing of their party is doing so i think some of them might even in nevada you know they have a none of the above option and i can really see some moderate republicans voting not for angle and certainly not for reid but just selecting none of the above i wish we had none of the above option in every state in this country i like that but you know when you bring up a kind of a serious point and kind of i think as sad point where people just get completely
11:56 pm
disenchanted they become apathetic and you know even the tea partiers who essentially were created you know because they they started having these huge rallies and get togethers and there's so much passion involved even they're starting to realize that these rallies don't actually give you any results and they're giving up i mean if the tea partiers don't have passion anymore than who will. i don't know i think it's up to us alone no we need to start our own party that's just called the awesome brunettes party and i think we can sweep this thing i think we can make it a. let's do it let's obviously i'm being i'm being ridiculous but in reality i think that the tea partiers still do have their enthusiasm i think it will be carried through the november election but i think when their gains are less than they have expected some of them are going to be quite disappointed and that is going to lower morale quite a bit while i'm kind of with you there i do think that you and i should maybe hold a little rally in from the lincoln memorial we might have to wait until next august
11:57 pm
you know so the whole martin luther king anniversary can spector around but i have to ask. another question here this is something that i ranted about earlier because i was so angry which is where is the right to the patriots the do anything that it takes to protect this country why are none of them speaking out against this crazy pastor dr terry jones who wants to burn the koran because dr terry jones is saying what they would like to say but are afraid to say dr terry jones is using hateful invective that even many of the tea party members recognize does not play well in the national media terry is doing a great favor for them and i think that's why they're not addressing it i don't think ultimately they care all that much whether the burning of korans leads to uprising around the world in fact they might they might want that the might desire that because then they can say look these people these scary brown people who read
11:58 pm
the koran they are all out to get us they all are out to get us we must must must fund war military interventions so to speak in muslim countries why hope you're wrong you know i hope more people start pointing them out and calling them out for this very quickly eliot spitzer is going to have a new show on c.n.n. which i mean i don't know we didn't think he was going to be all that exciting and then we saw this clip let's take a look. the name of our show we have to name it something. you know what you're. talking about like this right. now i'm. what you got. states or anything parker's. just a few words for him you're here on a little sneak peek that we got is that really what's the big so is going to boost its ratings so. did you feel that chemistry alone it was all over the
11:59 pm
place i think a better name would have been spitzer i hardly knew or but that's just me you know spitzer i'm the one thing that i'm quite shocked about is that he selected a fair haired co-host because as we know he does have a thing for brunettes. you have a point there maybe you should have chosen you instead of thanks so much for joining us thank you thank you our before we go it's time for our tweeting tonight now the tea party starting a school to you know teach their followers politics got us thinking when we glenn beck tweet remember he had recently started beck university so we thought he'd say this what about my scam i meant university don't forget about me tea baggers that's it for tonight's show thanks for tuning in and make sure you come back tomorrow and the meantime don't forget to become a fan of the a lot of show on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed any of tonight's show or any other nights you can always catch it on youtube dot com slash the loner show where we now post the interview.
