raising the retirement age and slashing pensions and they all say that's not much slashing jobs jobs in the public sector that's what they're trying to prevent and that's true in an effort to reduce the debt these countries have run up or stalled budget discipline and of course small competence in the year eight but this comes a certain respected economists say that it's time to get rid of the year it's time to go back and let countries like the peg go back to managing their. finances and drop out of the. german economy told me after listening to that. if we allow those countries to set their own economic policy again and to be sovereign in their currencies we would do europe a service we're doing europe a disservice by having this artificial currency imposed on it it can only lead to political tensions like in greece where the greece population greek population now has to suffer the taxpayers germany has to suffer the only ones that didn't suffer in greece were the banks because they were fully rescued so that's to me is
9:01 am
a deal that is not quiet equitable all over europe really we've seen quite extraordinary scenes from spain as well where there's been a general strike to cloud and this is the first general strike in spain since two thousand and two and it marks a split really between the unions and the socialist government which have also been always been quite cozy previously and that's because spain now has an unemployment rate of twenty percent so we seem transport workers go out on strike so nobody can get to work they're just wasting aimlessly at bus stops in the metro newspapers prepared for it by going on strike when she's day so there's no wednesday edition being published in a quite a damning. notice to the government refuse to workers have gone out on strike so no rubbish is being collected nearly one hundred percent of steel workers have walked out and the car industry in spain is almost ground to a halt in dublin there's been a demonstration there is a demonstration going on. now and that's been particularly timed to coincide with
9:02 am
the members of the irish parliament coming back from their summer recess to start work again economic figures from ireland really released last week really terrible it looks like ireland is certainly going the way of greece someone drove a truck into the irish parliament building in dublin earlier today in anger there also protests going on in portugal in italy latvia lithuania cyprus serbia rumania poland and france say this is really a europe wide day of action of course that biggest march taking place in brussels. i met there now let's get some more analysis on this with f. william endo who is live for us in frankfurt he is the author of gods of money wall street and the death of the american century hello to you so we are seeing some a massive demonstrations but is this just the start i mean could the protests like this get even bigger and perhaps more frequent well it's certainly possible the
9:03 am
what's not yet clear is these are largely organized by public service workers trade unions across europe and they have been one of the unions in the last twenty thirty years that have grown in membership unlike the industrial unions so they have a little political clout the question is whether other sectors of the economy will join in these. protests and that right now remains to be seen whether they are able to pick up public support and of course the mainstream media tries to isolate them down by the numbers demonstrating and so forth but i think this is a significant political signal now certainly brings me to my next point here do you think these demonstrations and strikes actually have the power to change you policy and see any relaxation of the austerity measures. i certainly think they have the potential power to change e.u. austerity policies the the way that this crisis has been handled since it first
9:04 am
broke in the summer of two thousand and seven from the part of the e.u. governments and the european commission in brussels has been catastrophic to put it mildly. by no means is as disastrous as the wall street bailout that the bush and obama administrations of facilitated but it did certainly ranks up there in the same direction so what we're seeing right now across europe is a realization among ordinary voters that they are having to foot the bill for the corruption of the big international banks that made this problem in the first place and they don't like that now is there a way to avoid the public spending cuts considering the massive debts european countries have started with. that is a very political question at this point in europe highly political question the point is the governments in berlin and paris and elsewhere are are extending the
9:05 am
the age of retirement or cutting down on the salaries of public workers government workers and so forth and all of those measures really have a negative impact as you saw in germany in one nine hundred thirty one under the brooding austerity that to pave the way for the entree of the third reich a platform of jobs for all so i think this is a very very tricky tightrope that the governments of the e.u. with are walking right now i think there are other ways to do it but you would have to have a real shake up of the political vested interests in the e.u. all right let's look at the broader scope could these strikes in riots undermine the existence of the euro or even of the e.u. itself. the e.u. i rather doubt it i think it would have to escalate quite dramatically over the coming months to weaken the euro we saw in greece since the beginning of this year that the greek trade union tradition is a very very activist tradition despite very very vigorous general strikes and
9:06 am
protests and so forth the greek government the pop andreea government has more or less stuck to its austerity guns. and that hasn't brought the situation to a standstill in greece so i don't see a strong militant to do it tradition in the post-war western european countries so unless there's something that that sparks a change in that they the tradition of the last fifteen years has been unions making concession after concession after concession as the jobs go to non-unionized countries either in eastern europe former warsaw pact countries or in asia. right after william and author and economic research thank you for joining us live thank you well the ousted mayor of moscow is planning to challenge the decision to sack him in russia supreme court that's according to

9:08 am
i have to say he really is quite a controversial figure since this man stayed in power as law schools mayor for eighteen years that is quite a lot of time that's why his sacking caused quite a mixed reaction of quite so many people supported liskov for his policies on pension years since the average pension in moscow is higher than in other russian cities a lot of people said that it was because of. course for that to moscow received a new modern look however there are also many of those who accuse you will score for failing to resolve the traffic problems in the city or failing to protect many buildings and morals which were all cultural heritage not only to the city but to be entire nation and were destroyed as moscow was getting this and also there is quite a lot of speculation around. why i feel about the who is thought to be russia's richest and most successful businesswoman and maybe people do see that it was
