how do you convince people of that i mean people read these objects and they watch fox news and they listen and they think of this is the only way that it can be i mean are there not enough i don't know military officials veterans like yourself speaking out no they're not and when the reason there's none of people speaking out is because largely people don't understand the global situation they haven't traveled around over the last couple of years and i've traveled to something like forty something countries so i mean i've really been able to intrench myself and see some of the situations that we're dealing with the most the american people have in most american politicians don't they sit and defense analysts don't either they sit inside of office and read numbers and the other problem is that a huge parts of the american economy is wrapped up in jobs in building humvees and building weapons and this sort of thing there are congressional districts so if the economies of course and then the congress members can't dare try to shut these things down because they lose their constituents i mean it is this vicious military industrial complex you know we all like to call it what it is specifically i think really in terms because afghanistan is on the forefront of the national security
11:31 pm
but i think that everybody needs to just look at a new way forward this is done by the afghan study group this is a way to save something like sixty billion dollars in defense spending this is a way to rethink afghanistan strategy and specifically this policy is one of many policies out there that have realistic ways of keeping us safe and we are running out of time that something people are talking about jake thank you so much for being here are coming up tonight the former which turned senate candidate is telling everyone that she's just like you christine o'donnell earns tonight's tool time award for claiming that she is normal and will discuss sex and why that is so concerned about what happens inside your bedroom and i asked the question why is the party of personal freedom and responsibility so interested in restricting your sexual freedom.
11:32 pm
the family of the alleged russian illegal on the street or victor fears for his life if he's extradited to the u.s. court dismisses pressure charges by washington who could face life in prison if convicted in the state. the u.k. ministry of defense under fire for team leader leading records of its campaign in afghanistan making it impossible to investigate cases of misconduct by soldiers the m o d claims it's standard practice to delete some documents after deployment. and an ad campaign backfires badly on eco campaigners trying to cut carbon emissions a major backers have now pulled their support and expressed disappointment over the violent and bored. part two of the alone
11:33 pm
a show coming up next in an emergency dial nine one one but some people have to pay a fee beforehand or the fire service may let your house burn down find out why coming up here on r.t. . well it's time for tonight's tool time war we're giving it to christine oh donald the darling of the tea party is running for senate in delaware but her past is coming back to haunt her as she was revealed a few weeks ago that she dabbled in witchcraft in her teen years which i just found kind of funny but apparently it's a real problem for her christian followers so since that revelation she's been trying to backtrack and escape the media spotlight we're now christine has released her first t.v. ad take a look. i'm nothing you've heard i'm you. none of us are perfect but none of us can be happy with what we see all around us
11:34 pm
politicians who think spending trading favors and backroom deals are the ways to stay in office. i'll go to washington and do what you do i'm christine o'donnell and i approve this message i'm you. so christine see i'm not really sure that you are like me i mean let's take a look at some of the issues were telling the truth hasn't been your strong point christine air has been caught lying about her education several times she claimed to have attended oxford university which is false for years she talked about her degree which she finally earned just last month and she's also been caught stretching the truth on her resume about her career don there's also her stance on several social issues that has some people questioning her judgment she wants to ban everyone from premarital sex and she thinks that freak dancing could lead to rape and she thinks that handing out condoms in high school is just like legalizing
11:35 pm
drunk driving so christine claims to be just like everyone else well we decided to take to the streets of washington d.c. the nation's capital today to see if christine o'donnell really is the every woman i know i have never lied in the resume pledge occasional resume no no i've never lied be my one teacher was good about my job to get my job experience and yet have you ever lied about your education on a resume and i've never lied about my educational resume ok have your dabbled in any type of witchcraft. or not you know no never never no never never so i think there's a connection between pre-dates mistake great i think it can be connected in some form or fashion no i think if you need anything between please don't think that right now do you think that we should stop the whole country from having premarital sex. but i also married.
11:36 pm
so for example is that what i mean. i mean yeah i guess i would you would force that yourself to decide all the rest of the world do you think we should stop the country from having premarital sex and you can. good luck. secrecy not a lot of people out there are just like you so stop pretending and that's why you are tonight's tool time winner. now christine o'donnell is perhaps an extreme example clearly not everybody thinks that free dancing automatically leads to date rape but there is this tendency by conservatives to be obsessed with sex and i say odd because often these are the people that we hear crying the loudest about freedom and civil liberties in the government not telling you what to do at least that applies to their guns but for some reason with the topics which is to sex and then progress isn't to abortion and gay marriage well the average conservative will get this rabid look in there i need turning to
11:37 pm
a christian crusader they then do everything a sin talk about our country being founded under god and use that as an excuse to advocate for the government regulating your bedroom activities and to top it all off these so-called family values politicians are more often than the ones who get caught up in the steamy sex scandals so you might think well this is no big deal but these people make a law as they drive policy and they represent your country so why are conservatives soap's s for sex or joining me from san francisco to discuss it is tracey card glory from salon dot com tracy evenings for coming back on the show i don't know just basic question why do you think conservatives are so obsessed with sex. well i think it's fundamentally an issue of fear they're afraid of sex they're afraid of the power of sacks they're afraid of their own sexuality and so they feel that it's something that needs to be policed and i think their interest in other people's sex
11:38 pm
lives is primarily a factor of their their fear about sex and also the fact that if they are having any they don't want anyone else to be having it either well the thing is they are having sex and the figures i mean how often do we hear about conservative politicians that are the ones that end up being involved in sex scandals or these conservative politicians that vote anti-gay and then get involved you know. gay affair. quite a lot. i really yeah i mean i would love to see it an actual tally because it seems like it's every other day and it's not a surprise at all i think that when there is this tremendous amount of suppression it's inevitable that there will be these kind of explosions of scandal and you know it it makes perfect sense so then what do you what is it exactly that they
11:39 pm
fear so much that they find so scary about sex that that they themselves can't control their urges. well i think that it's wrapped up in a sense of shame about sex and that sex is something that's dirty and so they're afraid that they can't stop themselves that they won't be able to control their desires their impulses. and because sex is so tied for them to more ality and their worth and goodness as a human being there is a tremendous fear there because it holds so much power why why is that my problem why do they get to tell me the way that i can live and what i'm allowed to do with my body and who i'm allowed to marry you know i feel like if these people definitely have their way then segregated marriages would still be something that you know that is that is forced in this country let me ask you about senator jim de mint's latest comments where he decided that single female teachers if they are
11:40 pm
pregnant should not be allowed to teach because. you know weird way that means that they're condoning premarital sex. and he sees that as an engine on on his religious rights and and his freedom. which is a really creative interesting interpretation you know he he believes that these people existing these people being allowed to be in the schools the that it is somehow an attack on his beliefs you know it's a really interesting. viewpoint it's not one that i think makes a whole lot of sense yeah but the problem is that the majority of the american people don't necessarily hold his viewpoint don't feel exactly like him but these are the people that get to drive policy and the for some reason seem to be the most successful the most vocal about these very heated debates why do you think it works
11:41 pm
so well for them. gosh i don't know why it works so well for them and i and i wish that i did know because i would i would love to kind of turn that around on the. it's it's really unfortunate and it's also i think that i mean i think that part of their success is is using basically fear mongering scare tactics you know like sex can be an awfully scary thing not just for conservatives but there is just inherently a lot of power there and and and so i think that they really exploit that territory does that make you i mean and we were talking about this is morning and we were saying how we just feel awkward that these are people that represent our country that this is how the rest of the world views the united states in this completely puritanical way does it make you feel awkward or maybe a better word to use when i say it's absolutely embarrassing it's awful you know i
11:42 pm
mean for quite a long while now i've had experience of going out of the country and and being kind of embarrassed you know especially when bush was in power being embarrassed about you know the world's view of america and. i would love to get the feeling of embarrassment. i am with you there we should not be embarrassed or scared of sex aren't three thanks so much for joining me thanks for having me. our coming up tonight my unplugged moment and how rogue stock traders overseas are facing charges all here in the u.s. well we mostly just reward them with bonuses stick around for that and when your house on fire you expect the fire department to arrive and put out the blaze a fire in tennessee was not put out because the homeowner didn't pay a fee so tonight we'll ask the question should some public services be turned over to private contractors a debate on the topic in just a moment. imagine your life
11:43 pm
11:44 pm
not cheap. showbiz that entertainment value of insults really spreads. high production costs baskets graphics of music all of this is a way to sort of focus people's attention by using techniques that are associated with it seemed to come out during this war we had millions of military entertainment. and the first sign.
11:45 pm
the. line in motion would be soon which brightened if you knew about the sun from finest impressionists. screen stunts on t.v. don't come. cheap. to add like to highlight a little trend we're seeing across europe and that trend is punishing the people who were directly involved and setting off a global financial crisis holding them accountable like all other criminals see just today rogue trader jerome kerviel responsible for one of the biggest bank frauds ever was sentenced to at least three years in prison and ordered to pay back the nearly seven billion dollars that he lost his bank this sentence was looked up
11:46 pm
by some peoples an extraordinarily harsh one but it does make a point it's intended to be a stern message to french banks and traders that irresponsible and risky trading and financial regulator irregularities wow that was our will not be tolerated now back in may iceland took similar measures the former chief executive of the collapsed. was the first high profile banker to be detained in the wake of their financial meltdown in october of two thousand and eight the special prosecutor investigating said that mr sigurdsson was suspected of falsifying documents and breaking laws on stock trading for personal gain and you know it here in america how many bankers have we arrested or not even gone that far but investigated questioned treated like everyone else and not elites that are for some reason untouchable can you guys name any yeah that's what i thought you see here the bankers just get bailed out get rewarded with larger bonuses and they did before the crash and even get to stand up the president of the united states because of
11:47 pm
a little inclement weather and make him settle for a conference call it's not that hard to get from new york to d.c. people give me a break but seriously we're not holding anybody accountable not making an example of them when bank c.e.o.'s made it to capitol hill lawmakers could not have been sweeter so maybe we should take a page out of europe's handling of the crisis book and punish the guilty parties it's fair it's right and it's necessary. now a reality show out called prank house opens up a whole new chapter when it comes to reality t.v. the website actually dubbed it an online interactive video game with real people's characters and here's how it works forty people have been chosen to live in a house with thirty five cameras that are streaming their constant moves to the web to viewers can go online purchase tokens and then they can decide what to do to the
11:48 pm
contestants take a look at the trailer for the show. now that chair is just one area in the house where viewers can inflict pain or pleasure on the contestants other options include a food ball table where you can literally shock people and a room where you can fire a paint ball gun at the contestants now for any of you out there who have never been hit with a paint ball gun believe me it hurts now i guess that you could see this sick show as a form of social commentary and it's pretty telling because so far it seems like the viewers actually prefer hurting the contestants every video that we've seen shows them getting shot or having objects hurled at that now i don't know why anyone would sign up to be on the show to begin with but if this is proof of the direction
11:49 pm
the reality t.v. is heading in i worry for this world how we've become so desensitized that torture is something that we like to watch and inflict on other people with the click of a mouse and think of it as again you know the sad thing is i'm sure that this is going to be a hit and i just don't get. it now if your house catches on fire in america the natural assumption is that you can call nine one one and the fire departments going to come because these are government services but your to. payer dollars automatically go towards no options there but what if you do have the option what if your city doesn't have its own fire department and relies on the services of a nearby city with the catch that you can choose to pay seventy five dollars if you want that fire protection want to get the situation in obiang county tennessee last week one residence property caught on fire he called by one and they promptly informed him that the fire department when come because he didn't pay the fee the
11:50 pm
man and his wife pleaded with the operator saying that they would pay whatever necessary if they would just respond but they were told that it was too late so the fire department stood by watched the property burn and didn't take any action until it had spread to the neighboring property whose owners actually did pay the fee so did the family here deserve it or should the firefighters have interfered those are the media questions being asked but we have to wonder if we expand this story what it means for americans to be able to pick and choose and for public services to become private when joining me to discuss it is katherine manga ward senior editor of reason magazine and reason dot com and mike elk labor journalist and contributing editor for in these times hey guys thanks for being here and now this is kind of just a sad sad story i guess first give me your take do you think that the firefighters did the right thing by just standing by you know it's actually an interesting story because. it's all about the context there's
11:51 pm
a couple things going on here one this family actually had the exact same circumstance happen to them three years ago no way i didn't know that they forgot to pay the fee forgot to pay the fee they had a chimney fire the firefighters came they put out the fire and the family paid the fee the next day. so i think it's not that surprising to suddenly discover that they forgot to pay that here you have absolutely no mercy for these people. you know i think that it's a question of of free riders it's you know we're used to the firefighters being so that's paid for in our taxes. but when they're not there are all kinds of incentives for people to wait and hope they can get away with it later on this is an example of why that's not a great strategy but that's laziness and i actually like this was one of the most absurd things i've ever heard in my life this argument. i can't believe anybody actually believes that i don't believe that you actually believe that i believe the reason you're seeing that is so that you say hey let's have privatized fire services so that we becomes your say let's not have social security let's not have these other things because then not having the firefighters come and my roommate
11:52 pm
cop and we were talking about this earlier today and he said you know when i go arrest somebody i don't go do a collection on the walk to make sure everybody pays their fee you arrest somebody it's a public good it's you know people well that's what this country is about and and anybody who says anything like that i mean you must have some other agenda some laws i fear corporate lack of corporate regulation agenda underneath that because i don't believe that you're actually saying well you know my latest mission is that you're taking my position on face value that really means a lot to me thanks. kid i do a really be my guest. my question here really quickly because you know what if there had been somebody inside the house that was about to burn you know then is it still you know well you didn't pay the fee this is about you know a private business and we should let that person die as it happens we have a perfect parallel to that example. but with those who have problems like that where you know you know one hundred thirty but that's actually not how it happens at all of course what happens is that it's
11:53 pm
a twenty thousand and then there's some system to work out how they pay now because it's so unusual to have fire service is not automatically included in the taxes we don't have a great system for right now but the fact is that if that were a more widespread phenomenon there would be a way where you could say i'm going to be hit by more widespread phenomenon you think that people should be able to pick and choose whether they want to you know be able to have the fire department or the ambulance come and pick them up i actually do because this is a perfect example where people should be allowed to take their own risks this family says. you know what we're not not worth it for us to pay the seventy five bucks i think that if someone had been in that house there was no danger to any human beings in the course of this fire which i think is very important to know what the critical the proper could have been there could have been but i think if there had been the firefighters would have made a moral decision to go in and help out why they didn't get the food though i mean beggars are you going to have to do you have a lot of freedom to take your own risks in this country but i mean my to you isn't the government you know if they have
11:54 pm
a fundamental role it's not necessarily to to run the country like it's a business but it's to make sure that things actually go smoothly and to provide basic services for their citizens to make sure that if need be they will keep them safe that's why we have a military and if need be welcome pick it up and take it to the hospital i mean under this line of approach you know if you don't pay your money for the highway should you not get food that's brought in on the highways i mean and i mean is this the argument you're looking at the argument all the argument is these people didn't pay taxes for this so how do you know how do you know these folks might not be poor i'm going to be able to seventy five dollars is not a lot of money and they say it's really five dollars is a lot of money if you know living below the poverty they didn't say we couldn't pay they said we forgot about what about another family they can't afford a mystery five books of them on actually another thing that this story illustrates is how there are lots of private ways that people help each other out after the fire the local thrift shop said you know what come in here take anything you want we'd love to help you do the local fish out of. our lot in the in the event that
11:55 pm
this this field were needed some was being able to do what i think this is their other example of what the right wing does is that they make this position of firetrucks not coming seem reasonable so that that it becomes all this is the right wing position and this is the left wing position this is a position that like less than point one percent of americans whole believe me i've already pulling on this issue but i guarantee you it's probably over ninety percent if i were trying to make my position seem reasonable i would not be going that sometimes you gotta let people's houses burn down i think this is a matter of principle my question is what's next ok so let's say that we start privatizing. fire departments an ambulance. ambulance companies and everything then i mean what's next some people are going to pick and choose you might somehow you know have some kind of preexisting condition as to whether your house you know should be able to be responded to by the fire department if you have a kind of wood that burns more easily it just puts everything up in the air though it does mean that if you have a house that's more flammable you might have to pay more that's a completely reasonable for this and that's how health insurance auto insurance work they tell you i want to make everything
11:56 pm
a matter of insurance actually yes i think that would be a terrible way where things like caring for your neighbor not allowed to know your neighbors people care for years emergency people really are about caring for people and neighbors of this house i guarantee you were lovely people who did care and in fact we know that they helped out after the fire they probably helped out during the fire and you know what else is not about this this is about the role of government and people paying for government services you know what else you know all those people in the gulf they should have gotten the b.p. oil spill insurance that we have b.p. did it you know because they should have been able to control that i mean you know they shouldn't live close to the shore members argue it is absurd b.p. was at fault in that case and had to pay this is a complete because there wasn't enough money to. his own property there wasn't enough money to regulate b.p. which is what you're about starving government so that you can drown it in the bathtubs in the words of your political godfather grover norquist but let's talk about this mean you know there are a lot of cities right now that can't afford to keep fire departments they can't
11:57 pm
afford to keep a police department really running either so what do you do you do you just keep those services going no matter what the cost no matter how high the deficits get well let's let's talk about something let's talk about the real free riders in the society the rich warren buffett right now pays a lower tax rate than his secretary the way the tax rates are set up in this country is the rich often pay less than the poor for example exxon mobil g.e. none of these companies paid corporate taxes last year no the big wall street banks paid corporate taxes they all used write offs and loopholes to get around it so. the reason why recording the services isn't because people weren't paying enough money out of pocket is because the rich have found ways to get to work around it and the trying to buy democracy in the trying to put ridiculous talking points. that we found a point of agreement i would love to institute a flat tax or the same i do it to me it's the richer or poorer the basic argument here is that if your house is on fire i would expect the fire department to go there and to help you and i would run and help too but the basic argument here is
11:58 pm
also about what that means to have done in the first place right this is actually not about the firefighters it's not about the firefighting company this rural municipality chose not to make firefighting fees part of the services that the town provides once that happens it has to be a private from who else is going to do it so i'm not sure there's a this is a question of somehow like private enterprise vs government this town made the decision not all of those there and that's why you know i just think that it should be mandatory and no questions asked federally nationally would you want to call it that. thank you so much for being here all right it's time for our tweet of the day before we go c n n's new a.p.m. show parker and spitzer made its debut last night talk about its best critics called it awful and during the show they had a segment called what's your guilty pleasure and spitzer answered nascar wrong below to show is going to tweet spitzer's real guilty pleasure and protected sex with a high priced call girl while wearing black socks i still can't believe that client
11:59 pm
