absolutely there are really great examples of that one really recent one from last week fox news actually reported that the l.a.p.d. purchased one billion dollars of jet packs these are these things that fly like sixty six miles per hour into the air and are going to save all the citizens of l.a. when in reality the l.a.p.d. hasn't even bought new squad cars into yours do you think that some fact checkers sitting there at fox fox news would say this doesn't sound right but they found it on some obscure blog instead of fact checking and figuring out of the story was true or not no they just went right ahead i don't want to make you question the credibility of news dallas this day i mean that is definitely not the first time the fox news has made something up but you can see with the internet age with twitter if people are tweeting every single second that you have to desperately find some way to compete and you know unfortunately i think you're right that it's definitely desensitizing us all thanks so much. all right so to come tonight our tool time award winners involved hateful comments made against stick around to find out who made our list tonight and he was just trying to do his job but he wound up
11:31 pm
in handcuffs at a senate candidates public event for the people who detained him have no powers to arrest anyone and they're calling him irrational i'm going to ask sam seeder political satire just and commentator about that story in just a moment. more news today. these are the images the world has been seeing from the streets of canada. showing corporations rule today.

seven thirty am in moscow good to have you with us here on our t.v. easier headlines russians demand equal justice as the spotlight falls on paces of influential figures using their connections worldwide prosecution a fatal car accident involving the eighteen year old daughter of a local government official prompting widespread public condemnation when she was let off with his bended sentence. with the u.k. braced for deep public spending cuts economists warn of more financial hardship on the horizon they say policymakers are applying outdated principles to the complex money problems facing the country financier's claim that central banks and governments are leading countries to an even bigger crisis. and heroes of the state russian russia honors the agents deported from the u.s. in the biggest spy swap since the cold war they were exchanged in vienna this summer for spies held by moscow and chapman who became the public face of the ring

11:34 pm
the was right means we're traveling. well it's time for tonight's jewel time award and we have a two for republican senate candidate ken buck as a colorado tea party or he's in a very close race for the senate seat held by michael bennet and over the weekend he took part in a debate on and he sees meet the press but his comments about don't ask don't tell and being gay while they have caused quite the uproar take a look. life style choices do you believe that being gay is a choice i do based on what based on what yeah well i believe that. i guess if you can you can choose who your partner is you know i think it's i mean that determined at birth i think that birth has an influence over like alcoholism and
11:35 pm
some other things but i think that basically you know you have a choice to put him. so being gay is like alcoholism and you have a choice i hate to burst your bubble can but psychological studies study after study in fact well they disagree with you. most of found the gay people are born that way and to declare that being gay is like alcoholism is not only insulting it's just degrading nearly everybody has condemned this comment including the human rights campaign now h.r. sees a d.c. based grassroots group that works for equal rights to lesbian gay bisexual and transgender people and here's where the two for in tonight's tool time comes it seemed last week white house senior adviser valerie jarrett made some comments to the washington post about the bullying that takes place here in the u.s. gay teens she called homosexuality a lifestyle choice do you think the h.r. c. would jump on her for those comments but guess what not
11:36 pm
a peep right total silence in fact and earlier this month here in d.c. valerie jarrett was the headline speaker at the national h r c dinner so why the double standard there would it kill you guys to speak out against the obama white house you know many in the gay community feel that obama's white house has taken their money and their votes but they don't see any results on the issues they care about and that's why tonight we have to tool time winners ken buck for his comments that being gay is a choice and h.r. see her being hypocrites when you choose to criticize a republican a lot of democrats get a free pass so shame on you. did you know that bloggers are dangerous per the i was and where the problem but if you watch our mainstream media all they seem pretty convinced. it's that have some kind of a bodyguard or a security person with them and in part it's about a new atmosphere there are so many more people who are bloggers or aggressive reporters or members of the public who are really coming at candidates in
11:37 pm
a very personal way that we just did not see before now in this book. and you see that same mainstream media well they're making it easier for political wannabes like joe miller to get away with unconstitutional acts yes believe it or not the alaskan tea party candidate who apparently has a private security detail surrounding him while he had his guards handcuffed and illegally arrest the editor of the website alaska dispatch now the incident took place at central middle school in anchorage where miller hosted that's how hall which he billed as a chance for voters to quote hear miller speak for himself well apparently when the dispatch out of there tony hopfinger trying to pursue miller in the hall with a handheld camera prodding him to answer some questions somebody got pushed miller ran away and hope finger got handcuffed so the anchorage police later showed up on handcuffed the man saying that they would leave it to the d.a.'s office to decide whether to prosecute but despite this a blatant lack of respect for the first amendment perhaps the most interesting part
11:38 pm
of the story is that the miller campaign later released a statement entitled liberal blogger loses a town hall meeting and described the man as an irrational blogger so now we've got a new book the men in this vicious campaign season and the mainstream media well they've jumped right on that bandwagon but are bloggers really the problem where earlier from our studio in new york i caught up with sam seeder political satire s. and commentator and i first asked him what kind of a world we live in where candidates like joe miller need a security detail to be with them at all times as protection from an aggressive media as if that's really a threat. right well i mean there's no accounting for paranoia but you've got to remember this is a guy who's running on the notion that we're not living up to the the principles of the constitution and he is having his private i don't know paramilitary or police force arrest journalists who are trying to ask him questions about his past which
11:39 pm
he has said he refuses to answer about until after the election i mean this is the type of thing that you would read in the onion you wouldn't expect this on the campaign trail so it's a very bizarre world indeed but the thing is what makes it even more bizarre is that joe miller isn't the only one that's doing it right could say christine o'donnell also doesn't want to talk to the press sharon angle doesn't want to talk to the press and the thing that really freaks me out is that especially in the case of sharon angle i mean this woman is actually doing well in the polls she might take harry reid seat and how is that that people are still willing to you know perhaps vote for these candidates who refuse to talk to the media and actually tell people what they're all about. well i mean we have a very polarized electorate and one that's very frustrated with frankly what's going on with the economy right now and they're looking for some way to vent and so it's i think for a lot of these voters who are going to pull the lever for someone like sharron angle or for joe miller or donna christine o'donnell i think it's really less about
11:40 pm
who they're voting for and more about who they're voting against it's their way to vent so you know short of something completely way out of bounds i don't know that there's anything some of these candidates can do to turn off their voters. with that said you know someone like sharron angle who is just caught on videotape basically telling in a bizarre speech. a speech to students that a roomful of hispanic youth that they looked asian to her and that she was one of the first asian legislators from nevada or joe miller. and cuffing a journalist or christine o'donnell would just about anything that she says i just don't think that voters are really taking that into consideration they're voting against somebody yeah not to mention also that her illegal immigrants and one of the ads actually could be bad guys from canada i am with you there it's actually it's freaking me out because i feel like no matter how crazy you are as long as
11:41 pm
you're running under this anti-establishment banner that then voters will go if anything but it's not just the voters it's also the mainstream media that is playing into this you know i mean we've seen clips of them saying that oh the rational blogger these bloggers they can't be trusted they're irresponsible these are not credible journalists why do you think that the mainstream media is going after i mean because i have two theories i think one could be maybe a little bit of jealousy because they're starting to take. viewers or the audience away from them another one is fear because these people actually touch the stories that the mainstream media doesn't. yeah i think it's both those things and you know just to clarify the the irrational blogger that joe miller arrested on his own is in fact a journalist for newsweek and bloomberg but in the main you're right i think you know what we're seeing and this was a this is a far worse phenomenon two or three or four or five years ago but now we're starting to see blogs go mainstream people like howard fineman people like howard
11:42 pm
kurtz kurtz who would be the last people you would think who would become sort of digital journalists have entered into this fray and what you're seeing is these sort of the growing pains in the pains of an industry that's dying you know just say a rational blogger is like saying in a rational person who uses a telephone i mean it's a medium and this distinction is becoming less and less relevant people are being measured by the reporting they do whether they do it in a blog or. paper it doesn't matter and so yeah i think it's a combination of a jerk. industry that is afraid with the changes that are happening and i also think it's a certain amount or is it that these people are out hustling them in certain instances but do you think we have to start perhaps questioning those people that are left on t.v. because as you mentioned we have a lot of very notable journalists that are now leaving print leaving t.v.
11:43 pm
and heading towards blogs and at the same time i mean you have people like this brian kilmeade thing on fox and friends absolutely drives me mad that he went on t.v. and he said all terrorists are muslim and then today he gave his half assed apology where he said ok sorry if i offended anybody but that's a we're not going to see any reparations no one from fox is going to go out there and try to tell the truth try to. i guess cover his wrongs and change that statement and that's why we're supposed to watch as credible journalism compared to irrational bloggers. well i got to be honest with you i don't know too many people who have perceived fox particularly fox and friends as credible journalism for years. you know simply like it easily the late night talk show host but simply not as entertaining so but i think in general you know the issues less about necessarily questioning someone because they're on t.v. but it's more about questioning everyone and allowing their reporting or allowing
11:44 pm
their commentary or allowing their ability to back up what they say as being the final arbiter and i think you know that's the one thing that blogs have grown out of this whole new movement that credentialism is not enough to carry the day anymore you need to show your work you need to be open to criticism and you need to address it a guy like brian kilmeade he stays there because fox is essentially a a. public relations department of the republican party and it's a partisan outfit and and frankly there are a bunch of like carnival buskers with no no offense meant to economies you have to . it's good to well you know i am with you there but i definitely think i think bloggers are good for journalists because they make us start asking questions and they force people even the mainstream media to you know put shine some light on the issues that they really have absolutely no interest or the people that are paying them have absolutely no interest in touching sampling so much for joining us my
11:45 pm
pleasure. you know the freedom of speech to be little things but good lord sometimes you really wish you didn't have to see and hear what people put out there let me introduce you to a certain fringe candidate here in washington d.c. she's running against eleanor norton holmes and this new candidates name is missy smith and missy is anti-abortion or pro-life as they like to call it despite the fact that she's had two abortions herself and she tells us that her new excruciating lee graphic political ad that you can see on your local t.v. i killed two of my b. by abortion i was told it's not a they lied to me they exploited me then i learned the truth and i've suffered for years and believe. well we have to stop the ad right there because the rest of the video is outright disgusting it's graphic to the point we have to cover your eyes and you want to vomit and that's exactly what missy was aiming for shock value and
11:46 pm
thanks to federal laws t.v. stations have no other option but to play her horrific ad like i said thanks to the freedom of speech only there's one problem you see you can have whatever views you want on abortion but it's one thing to make valid arguments against it which i don't really feel like there are a lot of but anyway it's another thing entirely to fearmonger and blatantly lie all the disgusting graphic images of dead babies and misses that well those aren't your typical aborted the eighty eight percent of abortions are done in a very early stage when there's nothing more your stomach but a ball of cells and that's what it looks like as a ball of freaking cells the missi here is decided to take pictures of kids that are nearly full term which means that the only reason they have those pictures is because these babies weren't going to live means they were missing crucial organs they had deformities that wouldn't have allowed for them to survive perhaps even die in the womb these are not with the majority of abortions look like so resorting to scare tactics like this that's just sick what you want the opposition to do you
11:47 pm
are going to show pictures of dead women laying on the ground because of all the back alley abortions performed when it was illegal i've got news for you missy you complained that you were lied to well how about you stop being a hypocrite and you stop lying to everybody else and stop abusing our freedoms to serve your sick fantasies as if any of you out there are dying to see this entire ad i warn you it's incredibly shockingly graphic you can find it online. still to come tonight the catholic church is trying to change its image by declaring an animated cartoon family one of that nice try guys all explain that in a moment and comic con brings out the nerve to openly express their love for comic books and superheroes but can superheroes really protect the people from problems in the real world like a double dip recession artie correspond with your chicken that went to the about new york to find out over a book. it's
11:48 pm
the secret incursion into the country. it's the invasion by means of. tradition language tell you this deep deep beat the beat. culture. the had the germans are still on aware of what's going on and there are still asking like you. i don't know but. the great. every month we give you the future we help you understand how we'll get there and what tomorrow brings the best in science and technology from across russia and
11:49 pm
around the world. join our technology update on our jeep. in recent years the catholic church has struggled with were paid at sex scandals involving priests and children which you can imagine it hasn't really helped them appeal to a younger and more progressive population but fear not because the vatican has come up with a brilliant new plan to change their image and get on with the use of the world they declare homer marge bart lisa and maggie simpson as catholics yes this is an attempt by the church to appear hip and cool because of the simpsons are countless then you show totally should be to let me give you some background over the weekend the vatican's official newspaper said that despite his efforts to hide it homer simpson is indeed a catholic and i'm actually not making this up this is a real story homer simpson perhaps one of the most profane characters one of the worst fathers ever to headline a t.v.
11:50 pm
sitcom while the catholic church has decided to claim and there's a reason they're embracing the simpsons apparently the show is one of the few in american t.v. that take religion seriously enough for the vatican the simpsons say grace before meals in the vatican claims that in their own weird way they even touch about the afterlife i mean check out homer has even prayed before. you don't know do you have three kids if you read there please leave me. the whole homer was very to superman is that a god but i think you got the idea he's still praying right good enough for the vatican now this isn't the first time the catholic church is pathetically trying to connect to the youth last year the song changes from the late rapper tupac sure was included as part of the vatican's official my space music playlist never mind of course that most of two box other songs were about smoking drinking jail time banging girls or the fact that he was killed in
11:51 pm
a shooting back in one thousand nine hundred six or the vatican still uses my space maybe that's why they're not cool now the vatican writer says the simpsons is one of a very few t.v. shows. for kids that speak of christian faith religion and the question of god is a recurring theme honestly i'm not even sure if a this guy's ever watched the show or b. if he's joking he must be i mean first of all the simpsons is not meant for young children and i think the trying to claim of the simpson family is catholic is just a very bizarre and few tile attempt to swill the catholic church is dwindling and aging numbers so perhaps a real apology or full cooperation with police looking into the sexual abuse cases around the world maybe that would help not trying to use the simpsons to improve your image well delaware resident and crazy senate candidate christine o'donnell she's done everything in her power to try to separate herself from all the we can joke surrounding her and there's doll of her in a witch outfit she's even released
11:52 pm
a political ad to dispel the witch rumors which basically has backfired. i know. i'm nothing you've heard i mean you. none of us are perfect but none of us can be happy with what we see all around us. or any of you know that. it's really just you. now apparently o'donnell really is doing her part to shed light on a growing religion in the us the chicago tribune just wrote an entire article about how wiccans and even more so pagans are becoming a war widely accepted religion in this country i'm sorry but i just do not buy that they claim that pagans become more popular due in large part of the faiths interested in protecting the environment and the way that embraces feminism and
11:53 pm
also doesn't restrict followers to one doctrine or belief and the braces the ideas of technology and scientific advancement now look i'm all for the tenets of paganism you could say that i'm a fan of feminist and i love the environment but i grew up in los angeles i went to college probably at the biggest hippie school in the country and i can tell you from personal experience but i have no clue where pagans are becoming more widely accepted if not in those places and i certainly never witnessed any sort of that widespread acceptance now just because we have a nutcase politician who dabbled in witchcraft and her even nuttier followers who are actually upset about it and think that a wiccan or pagans or threats but doesn't mean that their main street but nice try chicago tribune. comic-con one of the fastest growing shows to travel the country in cities all over the us people come out to see the latest in comics and many dressed as their favorite superhero and now we know that superheroes they can
11:54 pm
protect people from villains but what's the villain is the threat of a double dip recession. has the story. for two years now the world economy in the us has turned into an ocean of horror from many how do you scape your fears by saying employed what if you get fired what are you going to do i'm screwed while some have been choosing humor to fight off the frightening reality or you're afraid of a double dip recession sounds good others ways a little less legal are you afraid of the economy. what do you do to escape reality . i sit in my room and i smoke a lot of weed but many are choosing something completely different as millions of americans are very frightened of the state of the u.s. economy more and more u.s. citizens are trying to escape into the world of fantasy welcome to comic con the world's biggest gathering of comic book fans and side fi lovers do you feel like this costume protects you from the wounds of the u.s.
11:55 pm
economy yes a little pockets of my money inside somebody's country archie tried on the gear to test its super powers. we do feel very protected from everything can't we see it much but you would say several thousand people gathered on a weekday most of these people i think it was the unemployment office with computer games some dancing. and imaginary battles it's easier to forget that an economic crisis is spread across the country where all of these people doing here i mean last i checked today is a work day. it's like. two pm i don't say how are we turning in. a superhero for a day what is your main. weapon. i'm power girl i've got big hand. and enjoying feeling like a child i'd be everyone had believed it me a great b.
11:56 pm
and so i am kind of crazy with the possibility of a double dip recession just around the corner it could seem trickier to lure comic book shoppers it. but the world of fantasy is far from scared of losing its customer what are the most expensive and the cheapest comic books you're selling today well i have some three dollars to take that number thirty seven is. the last batman before robin came along sixty eight hundred dollars but it could take spider-man and superman with some more help from his girl to pull the u.s. economy out of its recession so that affording something like that would not just seem like magic to most americans and party new york. well joining me with more from our studio in new york is artie's honest i see a chicken and now and i said this is something that's you know really popular comic-con happens every year across the u.s. but since the recession hit has it become more or less popular you know i want to
11:57 pm
we were very surprised to see that the number of people who are ready to come out and participate in comic-con has really not gone down you've seen those crowds in the story it's literally thousands and thousands of people and this was a workday like we pointed out in the story which was all the more surprising to see all of those people come well that's what i'm wondering you're asking them you know it's two pm on a friday don't you have somewhere else to be or some of these people unemployed we were there excuses. you know well of course we talked to tons of people over there and some really didn't have a job others were students some like the guy in the road we saw i just got laid off so he had nothing else to do than come to comic-con you know it's different stories for everybody but it's interesting to me that tickets for comic-con for an entire weekend three day event are an entire sixty five dollars so you know these people must be getting their money somewhere in order to be able to attend now and that's definitely not cheap but for a lot of people this is this is a passion for them so when you went up and you have asked them whether this also is
11:58 pm
a way of just escaping reality and their current you know economic depression then how do they react to the offended by or did they kind of admit. you know i don't know this this particular shoot was very fun for us because we thought that some people would be offended that they wouldn't really understand the question because they've loved comic books their entire lives but it's interesting that all of these people were willing to really joke around with us and have a laugh and they were saying that they are in fact you know comic book or not concerned with the state of the economy and for some it is a way to escape others just you know have loved it their entire lives and are going to continue attending every single year now and just really quick. how is the how is the comic book business going you're asking that guy if perhaps that had been affected by the recession that's what one of the things that was very interesting for us to find out because this guy said that he has a book on sale that cost sixty eight hundred dollars a comic book that's an enormous amount of money if you're a comic book lover or for somebody to be able to know just throw it away in
11:59 pm
a book and he told us that he is definitely not worried that he thinks the comic book market is going to continue doing as well as ever especially in this economy and that's maybe one of the conclusions why we thought that this is a way of escaping from reality these comic books now i guess whatever does it for you and i think you. all right before we go it's time for our tweet of the day tea party candidate sharron angle she's opened her mouth and insulted another group of nevada voters she told a group of hispanic students you all look more asian to me so what would we like to tweets nevada thanks voters i don't support sharon as a politician but as a comedian she is just tacked with entertainment value so if she wins it's going to be a great six years for me and late night talk show host that's it for tonight's show thanks for tuning in to make sure you guys come back on wednesday will be will be off tomorrow for scheduled maintenance so sadly you're going to have to live without its butt in the meantime don't forget to become a fan of the show on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed any of tonight's show or any other nights you.
