see that you know you only have to go to a twenty minute visit with a doctor to get a prescription so hey if i really wanted out are all that bad i could go and you know talk to a doctor and say oh i'm having trouble i'm being spacey in class and get a prescription so it's really not that big of a deal because five out of my ten friends have a prescription anyway so i might as well just buy a couple pills off them and get some work done i mean i would stephanie's care it's something that you know deserves more attention especially the fact that like you said that now ten percent of boys was over under told over ten over ten years old they're now for scribes some for form of pill i mean these are ten year old children they should not be forced to be on a daily medication you're just doesn't seem normal but it's definitely deserves attention for you thanks so much. we're taking a break was sort of come on tonight's show our tool time award tonight involves a rapper and a president stick around for that and newsweek has listed a top fifty list compiled of the most influential political figures based on their earnings for two thousand and ten so run down the media titans and ask whether money necessarily means influence but georgetown university professor christopher

12:33 am
who's in the top sport next on our city. well it's time for tonight's tool time award last night we told you that former president george w. bush said that a comment made by rapper kanye west was the lowest point in his presidency if you don't remember calling a lashed out of bush during a telethon was raising money for the victims of hurricane katrina and he spouted off this famous line the destruction of the spirit of the people so the louisiana mississippi you know being the most tragic loss of all george bush doesn't care about black people. he's called. now after hearing bush say that that comment was the lowest point in his presidency calling a semi apologized but not really you see he told a houston radio station that he and bush have a lot in common they've both been accused of being racists take a listen. you
12:34 am
know when i get here. you know kanye went on to say that both he and bush saw a lack of compassion for america he said the bush was treated badly after hurricane katrina hit and americans showed him no compassion after he ican the us i'm talking about cut someone off during their moment now if you are a member that someone was taylor swift to kanye so rudely interrupted at the v m a's last year when she had just won best video of the year he jumped on stage and into a microphone said the beyonce made the best video ever afterwards of course he was booed off the stage now he also took a lot of heat in the media obviously but now kanye thinks that america was just being racist towards you know kanye i'm sorry america wasn't being racist america buthe you because you acted like a spoiled brat when you walked on stage and act like an asshole during somebody
12:35 am
else's moment nobody accused you of being a racist i nobody should show you any compassion and that's why kanye west is tonight's tool time. are you a cash strapped college student looking for a way to make a few extra bucks that minimum wage coffee shop job just isn't cutting it anymore or perhaps doesn't even exist anymore well guys it's time to get entrepreneurial a group of czech students have john done just that they've started a company that provides nude cleaning services and it's called crazy cleaners they're even coed to men and women they can have their pick to feast their eyes on a nude man or a nude woman for only two hundred fifty dollars an hour now it's definitely not the first time it's been done in fact i'm pretty sure craigslist has about three hundred of these ads as we speak but maybe got me more since the tragic end of their adult services section but that's beside the point these students say that
12:36 am
it's working they're marketing their new cleaning service simply as a way to unwind after a long day at work one student says you know quite often the people asking for services are busy business people who just want to relax and watching someone clean your house and underwear is a nice way for them to relax right because the first thing i want to do as soon as i get on after a hard day of work is watch a half nude man clean my apart realize it down have a cocktail. how actually really does a sense of i think these kids are on to something. now for the first time newsweek released a power fifty list compiled of the most influential political figures based on their earnings for two thousand and ten so who tops it rush limbaugh glenn beck sean hannity and bill o'reilly jon stewart does committed number five limbaugh though made a whopping fifty eight point seven million dollars just in the last year where stewart pollie still high but pale in comparison fifteen will now why go by money
12:37 am
well newsweek explained that in the oversaturated hyper commodified media culture of two thousand and ten the most influential political figures are generally the ones who make the most money peddling their perspectives and that includes everything from earnings on t.v. radio print even internet positions book advances and royalties speaking fees even consulting income and according to their logic the not so distant past aspiring commentators and retired officials they entered the political media rina mainly seeking prestige but over the past decade well the public's ever expanding appetite for political chatter particularly that of polarizer of the polarizer right excuse me promoted by cable news and amplified by the internet let's transform the entire marketplace of ideas into an extremely lucrative place and i don't think anybody would argue with that but i guess the real question is what we make of this list here to discuss with me is christopher chambers georgetown university professor and
12:38 am
author of the blog not turns or french chris thanks so much for being here to tell me this first do you think that you can equate you know your income per year with your influence oh you know because this is the reward for delivering the demographic to the advertisers or to the political agenda if you do it in the terms of fox and to some extent innocent b. c it's true tory this is their reward you also. have to understand that this is there are no journalists in the top fifteen you know slots and here you don't see shepard smith or soledad o'brien these people for the most part whatever you want to say they are inter tamers well that's actually not and it's interesting you bring that out because newsweek included their thing that they did not include katie curry you know they didn't include diane sawyer brian williams because they serve as conduits for passing on the information they're not the merchants of ideas themselves even though they said that these people make plenty of money but they chose to leave them off the list but as i'm necessarily right you think that those
12:39 am
katie couric and the brian williams all how many in full advise oh i don't think so i don't think they do and i think that if you were to weight the list according to that influence and then have money as a factor it would come out like this i mean perhaps katie couric you know would be in there somewhere brian williams would be in there shepard smith to be in there somewhere it was still pretty much spill out like this because it literally is a current of all i mean keith henry who's a professor at university of california came up with that term it's a carnival it's ringling brothers rush limbaugh happens to be the head clown you pay him the most because people come to see him perform the other clowns get less the lion tamer might get a little less if his even though his job is more difficult jon stewart is a comedian and actor steven kull bear is a comedian and actor and he does he does pixar movies he played the president of the united states and aliens versus monsters or me yet these people are forming
12:40 am
opinions they are rehashing in and twerk churning opinions and you see the result on tuesday i don't care what people say this was a focusing of that energy particularly on fox on a certain demographic repeated messages boom boom boom boom boom boom boom it became almost a reality show and people came out that's what people respond to that and you realize that you know you know that's. just on t.v. this is on radio this isn't over and right i'm going to be as this is on the internet where these people are every are comparable you are right with that that we are saturated with it but of course i want to walk a sure screen here because i want to focus on the man that we're all ok for list like i said they were rush limbaugh and glenn beck number two sean hannity number three bill o'reilly never for jon stewart he did he did make it on there but i mean are you surprised are is that what does that mean to me that you know for a medium like radio this guy i mean he's pretty much saving radio you know in
12:41 am
certain circumstances i mean aside from listening the kanye worse of the west or taylor swift i mean this is what people tune into for this medium but when you look at these guys i mean none of them were trained journalists none of them you know what they were on t.v. there were other media that maybe might have been in the newspapers here and there but they're not true journalists and you know and all right i mean aside from jon stewart here these are all right wing conservative kind that he said is that shock you out of that snow there because this is this is the this is the graphic that is you know has been roiling in boiling for a long time and you want to deliver them to your advertisers you want to deliver them to the political agenda that you might serve and they're doing a very good job of it so they're being rewarded now i think right here this is probably causing a little friction gabriel stewart in new york magazine actually documented that this guy right here is a little upset that this guy is making more money than he is so there it's not
12:42 am
started there and i yeah no yes definitely some competition there of course you know if it's about personality obviously there are going to be personality of the class but if we look you know more at this list with the fact that there are only nine women on the entire list of the top fifty there are only seven nonwhite people running entire list of the top fifteen of course. so i was i tell you well i mean that mirrors society i mean. you're talking about you know the media where you're talking about journalism specifically or this big or weird universe is not the most diverse universe but you have people like sarah palin who has become a reality star and is using you know she's sarah palin incorporated just like as bill clinton incorporated his money is more in speaking fees but hers is being a reality t.v. star more or less yeah now she's got her own show one of the latter of those will appear they were led out of that so you know that's you know so she might creep up here and who knows if the democrats ever take back the house all those people can
12:43 am
go out and become reality stars this tell me this last thing because you know this is the first time that newsweek did it and maybe i missed some people we're not sure do you think if they could have done this in a different way perhaps not you know made it about income they could have picked people that they think are really influential that are actually have new ideas forward thinking progressive a target. newsweek is still a top flight magazine but that's still too nuanced for the average american i think this jumps right here for people and it also serves a purpose it makes conservatives happy and well i think that newsweek is too liberal so you can showcase the these dollar amounts it also expands out because you have people like jon stewart you have area on the huffington etc etc but again they should probably wait it more towards including the brian williams is and the shepard smith and the soledad o'brien's i get that i think that really freaks me out of the fact that rush limbaugh makes fifty eight point seven million dollars a year that's more than all of the senate salaries in
12:44 am
a year come but they pay attention and you gotta know they do pay attention and chris thinks that you care. all right still to come tonight the u.s. has been fighting a war in afghanistan for more than nine years and now the u.s. is about to drop another five hundred million dollars on the project there so doesn't sound like will be leaving anytime soon i want to tell you about that in a moment and you tube is now taking down the web videos to talk about a jihad against the west now due to pressure from governments around the world but is that actually do anything we're going to discuss that after the break. the news today. these are the images the world has been seeing from the streets of canada. showing operation to rule the day.

a report on. the russian would be soon which will brighten if you knew me. from funds to pressure. stunts on t.v. don't come. pretty soon children all over san francisco will be crying into their lunch boxes for the last symbol of american youth is under attack for the happy meal she along with a number of other ballot measures the rub her vote this tuesday included want to massachusetts which shamefully shot down female topless equality and then won in oklahoma which bansuri a la the happy mail hell has been banned in san francisco and has
12:47 am
a lot of people there particularly outraged the san francisco city board voted to ban high calorie meals that quote entice lou. children with what you know a toy but come on i think we all know who the exact target is here but don't worry because of the meals deemed healthy by the board it can still be packed with little toys healthy like fruits get it get it's a reverse enticement so as long as it's healthy it's totally ok to trick little kids and devise any way to meet the city's healthy standards a kid's meal must contain fewer than six hundred calories which by the way is still a lot of calories and also has to include the serving of the fruits or vegetables for some reason americans are having a really hard time figuring out that french fries are not vegetables well apparently not every parent is down in san francisco with the new rules and they say that they do not need the board of san francisco telling them what their kids can and cannot eat and i'm have to agree with those parents the issue isn't the kids or giving being given toys with their meals it's the fact that their parents
12:48 am
are taking them to mcdonald's five times a week i mean i know that i loved the meal as much as the next kid when i was a kid and i grew up fine because i them every once in a while not every single day so i think san francisco maybe should focus on other things like i don't know homelessness drug use maybe even parental responsibility before they quote issue a fatwa on happy meals as the website buoying buoying dot net put it today so san francisco let their kids have their toys for god's sakes it's an institution. now president obama keeps telling us that troops are going to begin withdrawing from afghanistan in two thousand and eleven but that doesn't mean that we are going to have a presence there for years and years and years to come case in point the obama white house announced a major expansion of the u.s. embassy in kabul this week they also released a sketch of what the new facilities going to look like when it's completed in two thousand or teen keep in mind that three years after the scheduled beginning of
12:49 am
withdrawal now for the record this is going to be the largest embassy in the world again everyone always is and we sure are going to get an ice big embassy to house all those americans and we're still there thirty years from now because that's how they're making it look and then i mention the price tag just five hundred eleven million dollars and you guys thought we were in a recession don't forget recessions they don't touch defense spending or hundreds of bases or embassies all over the world now is also quite a coincidence that they made this announcement on tuesday a day when all the media all the public when they were focused on elections here in the u.s. and they were not paying attention to any stories coming out of afghanistan or coming out about afghanistan or spending in afghanistan and if you think that this is the only place that the u.s. is splurging on a tricked out embassy during the recession think again don't forget a few months ago we told you about the new u.s.
12:50 am
embassy in london this one billion dollars project even has a moat around the experience of the building to prevent from terrorist attacks because we all know that terrorists can't swim but you know really it's nice to see our taxpayer dollars hard at work all americans are unemployed and losing their homes and nice to get a little bit of truth from the government in a very bad candid and sly manner that we're going to be in afghanistan for a long long time. yesterday youtube removed hundreds of videos from its web site featuring the american born muslim cleric anwar locky who's now believed to be in yet and this all came after pressure was put on google by both american and british officials now there are hundreds of videos of a lockie on the internet sermons which he gives in english about jihad against the west and they're easy accessibility is a serious concern when it comes to terrorist recruitment so last week a british official press the white house on the matter and new york congressman
12:51 am
anthony weiner even sent you tube a letter listing videos featuring a lockie now the complaints arose after british police discovered that her shiner a child a british student who recently stabbed a member of parliament to get revenge for the people of iraq as she said they found out that she had viewed dozens and hours of these videos of a lucky on the internet and of course there was also the foiled bomb plot believed to have come from al qaeda in yemen just last week and this isn't really a matter of free speech you tube has a specific set of guidelines against videos that depict bomb making violence and hate speech but the bigger questions we have to ask are why google made this decision now and whether it's really going to make any difference earlier from san francisco i caught up with sarah granger she's a fellow at the truman national security project and i first asked her why she thinks google decided to yank the videos now considering that many of them have
12:52 am
been available online for years. they review things when they come to their attention some of the time i mean i don't know exactly what their processes are but. i know that they had a lot of pressure but they did state explicitly that these were these videos were against their policies so probably they just had more ability to take a look at them and realize that they didn't fall within the guidelines the videos should be within the nerdist on their side yeah i mean it seems like they had a lot of pressure you know not only from british officials who are pressuring the white house who are then pressuring google and you know you have to wonder because yes they do have these specific guidelines saying that you know if it incites violence or hate speech that they will take it down but now they kind of open a door for themselves where you know the government can arm twist them whenever they want. well yes and no i think i think recently what happened with these new
12:53 am
bombs that they found that heightens the level of security awareness in general and it also could be that they were given more. classified information that we just don't know about in terms of what the g.o.p. has available that they can tell them so you know that could have been part of the decision as well but it sounds to me like it was a pretty clear policy decision and they seem to be sticking to their guns in terms of how their policies were. so i i would expect that they would try and stay as consistent as possible in the future with these things just you know stay on top of it because it does take a lot of monitoring by these things i mean there are millions i think billions of videos and on you tube now sort of incidents that takes a lot of effort by. you know that's all we have to wonder because clearly on line recruitment is a great concern for officials when it comes to terrorism but just because these videos have been taken off of you tube do you think about really makes a big difference or doesn't really make a big dent i mean there are still tons of other sites out there the taliban has its
12:54 am
own site where they upload their own videos you know so i mean what kind of you know what significance does this really bear in terms of the battle. well from what i've learned most terrorist recruitment takes place on the ground and through word of mouth however these things are good tools for any kind of recruitment or marketing or outreach i mean you know this it's the internet is is a huge tool for people so particularly the reaching out to arab americans i think that should be our real concern i was reading an article in the free press about this and you've got a huge arab american population there and so reducing some of their abilities to recruit there i mean that could make a small difference obviously they will find other places to close these they will always have work arounds they're always you know one step ahead in this you know. they are doing the same thing in terms of their taxes they are with their group and
12:55 am
they're going to try every possible technology that they can to make this happen now also i mean can it be a bit of a catch twenty two for you know for counterterrorism officials because oftentimes they'll use some of these sites they'll monitor those sites to try to see you know the different patterns of the networks to try to see who it is that's on them so they can then monitor those individuals so i mean they obviously can't take them all down to the do they also help them. well you know i don't think it helps. with helping them or you're going to the terrorist organization i'm sorry i mean i mean facials who then use them as a monitoring tool right right yeah well i mean those tools they've always got those at their disposal and they can always they've always got more information than we know about there are all kinds of ways the military can go about. searching this traffic and. they can do it globally through through different means so it's not just they're going to be out and you tube searching you know who's tweeting that
12:56 am
they're going to be looking at the back of traffic on the. internet so now how do you think obviously it has its own guidelines of people are saying that you know this isn't a matter of free speech and you tube has said the any videos that are explicitly about religion will remain out but you know that's obviously where the lines get blurry especially if you talk about cleric anwar lalaki because he often will just say things like defy defy the west you know it's not necessarily hate speech or inciting violence we actually have a clip of one of his videos to play. you might argue. with my neighbors sometimes person. my classmates or. co-workers who just. simply do not trust that is what he says so what do you know what do they do in that kind of scenario obviously google has to leave that out but
12:57 am
that also you know could be interpreted in whatever way into someone's mind who you know then chooses to follow that path. yeah there's a fine line there but you have to keep in mind that this person is an enemy of the united states and is on terrorist watch lists and would be arrested and that anyone found him so that you know. i believe got to be a consideration as well yeah i just wonder if you know it makes google kind of run into a little bit of murky you water there but for the moment they have taken down these hundreds of videos sara thank you so much for joining us thank you. all for we go we have our tweet of the day for you you know earlier we told you about the city of san francisco banning happy meals because they're high in fat and because they give toys to children we just wondered what would ronald big donald tweet we thought he'd say please don't take away the kitties i love them so you know
