says there are fears the new order forms will not be implemented after republicans took over in the midterm elections. and one looking and smelling good can turn out bad russians allured by fake cosmetics can end up paying a big prize from here according to the ministry of internal affairs some thirty percent of all cosmetics in the country are cowards and. now one of the lawyers who is taking up iraqi cases against techniques used during the british campaign in the country speaks to our next sil shiner explains what his clients went through and why they demand a public inquiry. today i'm talking to fellow shina who is a human rights lawyer and the head of public interest lawyers there representing a group of iraqis who allege that coalition forces abused them during the occupation of iraq they'll sign a thank you very much for talking to r.t.
2:31 am
now you're taking a case to the high court representing one hundred forty two iraq tell me what that's all about. of these iraqi clients complain that over a period of time the whole time that we've been in iraq actually from march two thousand and three to december two thousand and eight. they complain of sense of deprivation with hordes or blocked out goggles or in months all sorts of sexual matters of various techniques designed to intimidate people and coerce including harshing where threats and insults of the shouted directly into people's faces. a whole range of issues is a male rape. all sorts of very troubling aspects of the yukos interrogation policy none of which has been fully explored and that is that there's a sort of odd sexual element to a lot of these claims isn't that sexualized nature of it is a lot to do with nakedness some accusations of pornography having been used yes
2:32 am
well it's clear that the interrogation policy included a directive to all use of. strip that the iraqi internal needs force make us and keep them naked if they wouldn't cooperate. now this nakedness was to take place often in front of a group of soldiers who would be laughing and and sometimes when so some of our clients refused to strip so force was used to. strip that the iraqis and then shades into other matters so for example one of our clients complains that one of the soldiers straddled his back and masturbated on his on his back when he was naked that kind of. kind of abuse can often follow from that struggle to strip clients but there are other aspects as well for example many
2:33 am
of our clients complain that they were played loud hardcore pornography all night sometime in june ramadan obviously they were intended to render themselves unclean or poor marks were left in the showers and the toilets and they'd be observed to see how they reacted to the. female and male soldiers and guards were having sex in front of our clients masturbating in front of a whole range. of sexual matters which are very troubling and no one has got the beginning of an explanation as to what on earth was going on this is all taking place within a secret compound. which is where the joint forward interrogation team was operating and they were a compound within a compound on support not to the military chain of command but to london and no one
2:34 am
seems to go anywhere near them by design. we're not aware that the red cross every inspected the the area that was the joint for interrogation team so they seemed to be able to do what they wanted. and one of the. interrogators in the bahamas inquiry gave evidence on the twenty sixth of april of this year saying the only limits to coercion were with the limits the stretches of one's imagination and you can see that very clearly in all of the the complaints that are being made. but these are hugely serious allegations are made against british troops what kind of evidence is being provided. should say against british soldiers and guards for sure but a lot of these are being made against interrogators. in terms the evidence war the evidence is that this is the signed witness statements of all of these clients and
2:35 am
i have to say that not one of our clients has been found by any court or inquiry to be embellishing the truth let alone lying and there's actually no reason why that would make this up. because it's a matter of gross humiliation for a male muslim to be subjected to these matters are i myself have no doubt that what they're saying is the truth and it is a pattern for example. in august two thousand and six maim divisional internment facility scheiber logistics base there were two incidents where interrogators of superimposed our points photographs on two horrific paedophilic images of one. a man having sex with a young girl and another is a man having sex with. a ten year old boy our client is sure it's
2:36 am
a ten year old boy and they've superimposed points of photographs on those images print them out said well if you don't tell us what we want to know then we're going to distribute these to your commune to your family it's easy to imagine that these kinds of abuses could have been perpetrated by rogue elements in the armed forces but in fact your thinking to prove that this ill treatment is systemic in the armed forces there's no doubt that this is systemic within the interrogation. policy because we have those documents from the bar inquiry so we know for example that there was a policy of getting them naked get the make you keep them naked if they don't cooperate the way in which there was to be searched the harshing we have video. the training video of this on the bomb mission quite a website these are clearly systemic issues and it's absolute nonsense to suggest
2:37 am
this is a few but. that's the interrogation policy needs to be exposed and we need to ensure that we never go into theater again with with an interrogation policy which is blatantly i'm all for. what kinds of people are these iraqis that are making these allegations tell me tell me a couple of their stories how they came to be arrested or what happened. but by and large they're in their homes usually sleep with their wives usually one o'clock two o'clock in the morning and the door is exploded open twenty soldiers rushin. they're abused caffe often rifle but sometimes hooded sometimes the women and children are abused in two of our cases pregnant women have miscarriages because they've been so badly abused. our clients are iraqis and civilians they don't know what they've done they're never told their never charged and after days weeks
2:38 am
months years they're venture released but not before they've been subjected to all of this abuse kept in solitary confinement deprived of food and water deprived to sleep etc etc. but they all seem to be by and large iraqi civilians who are going about their lawful business and they've no idea what they've done wrong and they still don't know what they've done wrong because no one ever told them oh you're going to be charged with x. y. and said allied forces they must be operating in a hugely difficult situation in that they were trying to eradicate an insurgency obviously unpleasant means had to be used but did they not contribute towards an end which was desirable what i wouldn't accept that for a minute this isn't the heat of battle this is the occupation. we're supposed to be . running iraq we are the local and central administration we are the police we are
2:39 am
training the judiciary we are one in the country if we take iraqi civilians into our custody and then over a period of weeks months subject them to that kind of treatment there's no excuse for that whatsoever. unless you're suggesting that torture is not actually an absolute prohibition sometimes it's ok to use a bit of torture which is just plainly on acceptable and it's completely contrary to international law what's the objective of the case that you're bringing this week we want a single inquiry into the u.k.'s detention and interrogation policies in iraq across the board get it over with get it dealt with in public before judge. find out exactly what was going wrong who was responsible which policies and practices need to be trained out. and rewritten and so we can all move on and
2:40 am
on all be assured that next time if there is a next time. where we go into a theatre like iraq. our armed forces and our interrogators want to scrapes the nation by behaving in this way. we the u.k. is becoming known for length and expensive inquiries i'm thinking of the bloody sunday inquiry which took twelve years the choke out inquiry which is still ongoing is there a chance that this if you get what you want could turn into one of the. i doubt very much the the bad news inquiry the oral hearings commenced in september two thousand and nine and it's all over in less than a year as absolute no reason why something like this should become anything like a bloody sunday enquiry the the various sets of laws need to cooperate. which needs to have a sensible approach to how long each. party is going to be heard in the by recent
2:41 am
corrie the chair so william gage allowed us and others fifteen minutes only and when you got to the end of the fifteen minutes that was that. there's no reason why with some common sense and discipline this needs to take anything longer than a couple of years or so it hasn't been plain sailing to get this far to bring this case you face quite a lot of opposition over a number of. in the past i've had death threats powers and all sorts of things sent through the post and the image is deliberately and systematically stirred that are getting right wing press to write horror stories you know shock horror shina x. for people who've murdered. u.k. soldiers if it was all cut and dried and these using legal aid etc etc but i think it's not got anywhere because people can see that there's something gone badly wrong here and slowly some elements of the press have turned away from the minister
2:42 am
of defense and started taking a more objective approach is a long way to go because we live action quite a a right wing society with quite a right wing press and a lot of the press just follow the government line but i think the penny's beginning to drop and that people in high places within the ministry of defense i think of begin to realize that the game's up they're just not going to get away with this cover up for much longer you are the public interests lawyer do you think it's in the public's interest to spend public money proving that there is systemic corruption inside our armed forces i think it's in the public interest that if we go into a place like iraq. supposed to enforce the rule of law and principles of democracy fantasy and justice good old fashioned british principles that we the high youth in accordance with and we haven't done and i think it's in the public

weren't able so i'm very very it was this is a very very good team and it's a challenge for us to kind of measure ourselves and see how we compare against the best team from from the east so i guess if you look at it. maybe there will be more more of it tonight kind of proves that we were boring at that. time else because someday i'm going to be looking at you cross sixty one home ice and it's all about you live with surprisingly strong also sixty's by far east atlanta sort of after the least for one defending champions x. boss came from three goals down to a full three top lead of scots in petersburg also fought back to win three one time just a bit. thrashed nefesh make seven two instruments even issues has to defeat the chants . and finally coaling is a forty new sport for russians but the country's sports bosses are king for it to dominate the next winter games in sochi so the national olympic committee has

turned to canada for help as more was girling is traditionally popular in countries like canada us were. serlin sweden and denmark to name just a few and it's been that way there for hundreds of years however in russia which has had the same with it vereker this as those countries all along the sport of curling has somehow failed to reach the masses a fact which has been considered and major disadvantage especially head of the next whole winter olympics but russians force authorities are aiming for nothing less than to defy the odds of the next winter games and have formed an experimental national team which includes a coach and players from canada i think what has to happen here is you have to get fresh on the forefront perhaps you can have a real competition and that even after the woman question i think eleven said instead of having it all to the requests for women girls to start playing feeling

so i think that has since creation with them and if we can get the men where they qualified for the role of the european championships playing at the world level and start showing some results at the world level it will def take the sport up that it will probably be a long while before the russians can embrace curling as a favorite sport or even pastime as has happened with bowling for example but first things first the country's national squads need to stake a claim on the international curling circuit while the ladies scene has already started making a name for itself the men's side is definitely lacking both in results and recognition it was hoped they invited canadian curlers would raise the level of russia's domestic competitions and that's already happening according to tiny woodbridge but the players themselves are ready to go the extra mile for the team and become naturalized citizens of russia to realize they're in big dreams if we're fortunate enough to go and help pinnacle i mean we'd be all too willing to make if

it works make it happen you know when you're on a team you spend so much time training other and then you know together with and with aleck's you know xander we know it would mean the world to them to get to you know represent by fan a international competition. if we can help do that that one down now for us human resources is just one of the it's the goals that needs to be overcome in roots in a big lorry suitable infrastructure for curling is the next hurdle which will bit sacral head on by russia sport bosses and according to hans woodbridge the chief icemaker of the vancouver olympics now hired by the russian olympic committee the success of curling is possible in russia the sport will get more popular ask us time goes on you know like in canada we have over one million up difference. that's just going to grow the more it's going to grow you can have steak could even have wheelchair curling you can have all kinds of things that are new so you you will have to be just meet some of these and maybe they sneak through so many people that
