11:30 pm
as for cotton cultivation devastated the once rich remove cost of the sea to disappear. well those were your headlines now is to decide and part of the old you want to show that's coming up next. it's time for tonight's tool time ward and it's also that time of year here in washington christmas lights are starting to appear there's a chill in the air and the g.o.p. hypocrites are out in full force take arizona senator jon kyl for example he said earlier this year that he would vote for the start treaty during the lame duck session of congress but of course last week he flip flopped on the issue and tonight we've got yet another example of senator kyl's saying one thing and doing just the opposite just last week he pled should join other g.o.p. lawmakers on banning earmarks and then only three days later the number two senate republican slipped a whopping two hundred million dollar earmark into
11:31 pm
a bill that passed in congress now the money is going to be used to settle an arizona indian tribes water rights claim against the government and so for that reason call his office say that this was an earmark but interestingly enough most government watchdogs disagree the best part is that for years kyle has railed against earmarks on t.v. while making millions of earmarks for the state of arizona take a look at this clip from a fox news interview back in two thousand and nine. well over a year was not was not the time to be here marking a lot of this money people don't mind paying taxes of the interest of the government needs to run but they hate to see their body wasted so that's a second reason for opposing. senator kyl so hard to take you seriously when you say one thing on t.v. i mean you do the exact opposite now to quote david weigel over at slate he said it's not an earmark if you close your eyes and wish really really hard but senator john kyl it is an earmark and you are a liar and that's why you are tonight to
11:32 pm
a time where. now this last week everywhere you turned there was a story about sarah palin she's got a new book out which of course means a book tour and she's on t.v. picking fights with everyone from president obama to katie couric well tonight the residents lori harf and as new yorkers can sarah palin really be elected president . sarah palin has a reality show her daughter is on a reality show and she has a new book coming out with all this promotion it seems like she might be gearing up to run in two thousand and twelve do you think she's a viable candidate for president of the united states this week let's talk about that i think absolutely she could not be president. i don't think that she has the smarts i don't think if she has the political backing i think that she's made a career out of being. a t.v. personality and i think that when it comes to the brass tacks the republicans will
11:33 pm
not nominate her so you don't even think she'll get that far when it comes to the nomination no idea stranger things could happen but she's not getting my vote do you think she'll get enough votes. possibly possibly how do you feel about that. let's america if she gets the vote she can run but i'll be voting and not for her i don't think she'll go for it i think i think a lot of people i think that's why they were elected in the first place i think if they took her seriously or whatever they might have liked it or mccain. so maybe obama is actually hoping she does run against him i would say. why are we giving her so much attention if she doesn't have the support out there do you think because the media is very good at giving attention to someone who's good at making a stunt of themselves so is that all it is but when it comes to election day if she actually was running you don't think that she would get in i'd hope that we had the foresight as voters in this country to realize that no she should not be elected
11:34 pm
president of the united states of america how do people take her seriously for him is all about nor was the party that is if people are supporting the g.o.p. they were difficult no more no more was there and i like her then i go g.o.p. that was. before me she's not really someone in the present a party that is someone better someone is the. really good winter read before she say anything think about it before she seems if she does become president how will you feel oh i'm moving to england their home offspring if she does become president of the us what do you think the reaction will be in the u.k. . this. is my friend. whether or not you think sarah palin is presidential material the bottom line is seems like she's planning on running so at the very least it looks like we'll have an entertaining election come two thousand and twelve.
11:35 pm
well there is more of a shake up for the global economy today students are back on the streets protesting tuitions hikes in the u.k. fears are rising the ireland's bailout won't be the only one and china and russia have decided to quit the dollar so what does all mean well here to discuss it with me is our chief financial correspondent lauren lyster lauren thanks for being here now let's start of course with this announcement today basically that china and russia said that they are recounting the dollar at least when it comes to buy lateral trade deals they're only going to use their own currencies that sounds like a kind of big step i mean is this the first step you know of a move away from the dollar is the reserve currency literally a continuation of something that we're seeing that absolutely does call into question the u.s. dollar as a reserve currency according to many of the economists that i've been speaking to i mean this is something that countries have been doing for a while now you know we've seen this happen in brazil where where brazil is kind of
11:36 pm
spearheading trade among latin american countries and their own currency currencies where we've seen china spearhead a lot of these deals and the deal between china and russia now is just one further example of countries circumventing the dollar and trading in their own currencies of course the u.s. dollar is the reserve currency for a very long time this was the only currency that people traded in and so this is a definitely a big shift and it's a step away from really the u.s. dollar as the reserve currency it could definitely affect the u.s. as status as that is something that many people been talking about for a while but you're seeing more and more of these bilateral agreements and of course the u.s. being the reserve currency and that's what gives the u.s. the privilege to run these deficits run up the debt print money inflate its way out of debt of course the u.s. wants that privilege i mean it's one of the bridges of being the reserve currency and it's something that you're seeing the shift away from i mean even i have economists that i talk to that say the u.s. dollar is becoming not the reserve currency but the pariah currency countries want to move away from they don't. i want to be required to hold these large reserves of
11:37 pm
u.s. dollars because the u.s. is running up debt so you know it's kind of a continuation of this argument we've heard over currency wars quantitative easing and its impact on the rest of the world and then the reactions you're seeing from other countries that matter emerging countries that have money to spend that are growing economies such as russia such as china that are that are going a different course but then what do you say about yesterday's developments you know because of course we had the tension between north and south korea you had ireland's bailout and so the what happened is people started buying up u.s. treasuries the dollar value went up and so then a lot of people are saying you know that's proof that if there's any kind of global uncertainty people still run to the dollar there's proof that the u.s. dollar is still the reserve currency at the end of the day that still is the situation so anytime there's political unrest like we saw in north and south korea or like you're pointing out in ireland yes there's a flight to safety that continues and that flight to safety is considered a flight to the u.s. dollar because at the end of the day it's still the reserve currency it's still a convertible currency the euro is obviously under pressure with what's going on in
11:38 pm
ireland and that sort of thing so you are going to see this as long as it is the reserve currency just. yeah does that mean that these other bailout bilateral agreements these other moves to circumvent the dollar don't have an impact no absolutely not i mean this is a continuation of something that does matter and is a shift markedly in the world in the world economy and politically now if i want to bring up ireland you know they announced they're going to have an eighty five billion euro bailout and now there are a lot of fears that ireland is going to be the only country that perhaps spain perhaps portugal need to be bailed out as well if it goes that far then what's going to happen with it with the global economy how will it affect it well i mean if you're talking about specifically you know let's start in europe before we get to the global economy i mean portugal is a very small economy if they needed to be bailed out the eurozone would be able to support that with its fund is what i'm told by people that study and work in this field spain is a different situations fane is the fifth largest economy in your. it's the ninth
11:39 pm
largest economy in the world if spain was facing a situation like that the eurozone wouldn't be able to bail them out spain may face default if that was a situation they couldn't stay in the euro zone so all of all of this threatens the eurozone which then threatens the euro we've seen the euro take a dive on this news and what it all amounts to when you look at the bigger picture is that these are countries and this is a bloc an economic bloc that fuels exports from the u.s. exports from china so if you see a decay there if you see a breakdown there and these situations where a country like spain faced a fall that would absolutely have an impact on the broader global economy with you know china and the u.s. and other countries that rely on the eurozone for their exports you know one of the interesting things is the u.s. is no stranger to essentially an economic crisis at the moment itself but the contrast is so stark from what we see here and from what you saw on the streets you know during the nato summit in lisbon yeah i mean absolutely the difference i mean you have countries in europe that are making tough decisions with austerity because
11:40 pm
they have to they're all on the euro they don't have the ability to influence their currency influence a valuation of it because they're all on the euro they can't do what the u.s. does with the dollar and just print more money in order to have the effect that they want to you know run up their debt and to to deal with their problems in the spending that they need so you have two really different situations and you see people on the streets in europe in a way that you don't in the united states even though everybody is facing you know financial hardship the u.s. is definitely not out of the boat i mean unemployment is high we are running up the debt and yet you don't see people's lives affected extent because the u.s. hasn't had to take these austerity measures in europe where you see them you know making these tough choices making these tough cuts you see people on the streets you see activism surrounding it because it's affecting their lives and you know it's affecting their lives directly and so they notice something like my country's continuing to maintain funding to nato to finance these wars in afghanistan and these other missions and who we want this money to be spent on social services that
11:41 pm
we. are facing cuts because of our government's financial problems whereas the us isn't in that situation it doesn't affect people's lives directly it's definitely a different picture on the streets but not financially learned thanks so much thank you well we've got one more segment ahead on tonight's show there is a website for just about everything these days including one for flashers we're going to tell you more about the site where flushers share their stories and their tips in just a moment and as a rubber revolution taking place in d.c. the city's trying to promote safe sex and they're using an unusual web site complete with a condom quiz to get their message across to our teens christine for sal give us that report when we come back. going to be soon which brightened if you only bounce from phones to the christian.

well looks like hollywood superstar leonardo di caprio has got a new fan it's a russian prime minister vladimir putin it turns out that both of these men have a soft spot for tigers and that's what brought leo to meet putin in the first place both are scheduled to attend a tiger summit in st petersburg but unfortunately leo was on a flight to moscow that was grounded at j.f.k. due to a wing of the plane and catching on fire almost keeping him from making it there on time however leo persevered and finally made it to the summit despite his second flight being held up by severely heavy winds so when putin was addressing the crowd during the summit caprio in the stands and went off on a little tangent addressing leo successful trip and that he respected that he did not let it keep him away from st petersburg but here's the best part who want as
11:45 pm
far as calling to gaboriau which is russian for a really manly man of course it helps that a gaboriau is very close to the cars it has donated a million dollars to the world life wild to save the world wildlife fund to save the tigers excuse me let me tell you this i'm with putin on that one go leo it sounds like these two are destined to be best buddies lee or veal to putin that he has to late grandparents who are russian and he's always had an interest in seeing st petersburg which happens to be whose hometown so wow talk about a small world i just can't wait until leo starts showing up shirtless and pictures of putin because those will be some great out lines and just simply you know great times. well this next story will surely give you something to talk about at the table tomorrow did you know that there's a website out there dedicated entirely to flashers yet i mean the flashers who expose themselves in public to get a rise out of random women or just plain old brain of strangers but this website
11:46 pm
called digg flashers dot com offers a forum for flashers around the world to come together and share their stories and fantasies about baring all now the form gives flushers options to share their experiences tips and even some erotic fantasies and hopes of helping other aspiring flashers get their kicks now while we did not subscribe to the page we did pick up a few pointers part of my part the forums demonstrate how to hide your genitals until you quote peacock it also teaches you how to photograph people while watching you flash and it even offers tips for example one flasher explains how he purposefully will wear a hoodie with an opening in the lower part of his shirt to make whipping it out that much easier and that is just skimming the surface believe me the website literally offers details on every single aspect of what it is to be a flasher now subscribers share experiences about flashing guys and females but
11:47 pm
mostly females are the target for flashers desires that includes everybody from teenage girls to hotel maids to mother in laws and there are polls and testimonials as well from flashers who've been incarcerated for showing off the family jewels in public trust me we really could talk in-depth about every inch of his web page but we decided to spare you those shall we say disappointing photos as far as i'm concerned this just proves one thing that there really is a need for just about everything disturbing as it may be. now in attempts to fight a staggering aids epidemic here in d.c. there is one website that's trying to spread the word about the use of condoms well this. child inspired by the seventy's in an online quiz this organization hopes to teach the public that using condoms shouldn't be so taboo as artie's christine for alex blames their effort to destroy condoms culminates with one very important question what kind of condom are you. it's
11:48 pm
a simple question really sir what kind of condom are you i'm sorry what kind of condom are you were asking everyone today on them. to be i've no idea. what it what kind of condom are you. that's kind of person. the washington d.c. department of health is trying to make it well not so personal so they've launched a campaign they're calling the rubber revolution through her hear the word revolution they think change. in the city were three percent of people are hiv positive higher rate than any other city in the country doctor none to come on to elias says change is needed we're having ads on t.v. on the radio media mixed media facebook twitter on the side of buses we have text messaging people can text and ask where free condoms are they can go get it their website uses bold in your face seventy's style lettering you can even take the quiz
11:49 pm
to see what kind of condom you are that is if you don't already know what kind of condom are you. small one sir what kind of what kind of condom are you on them. before he would take because. you know but as the washington d.c. health department urges people to have as many condoms as possible the police department here well there are different story several accounts of people arrested for being fact workers in the city police told them they simply aren't true many of these on their person to be just another average person looking to get lucky. in the city with the big phallic symbol in the sky at its center many here are just far too awkward to talk about sex and condoms and what kind of condom are you. but some have already submitted videos that have been posted on the website.
11:50 pm
so why then when everyone knows why people should have safe sex aren't they people think that they're too big companies will be tight and we're just thing that people think that of the moment and our ads address that as well people think that it shows that they don't trust their partner and we try to address that as well this is the fact remains when the situation gets dire as it has here local government hopes a few of these will make all the difference in washington christine freezone r t. now while some are hailing the robber revolution program as a much needed jump into reality abstinence groups couldn't disagree more they say the condom signs on the matter are not only offensive but they send the message that casual sex is a ok as long as you wrap it up so what we say is making condoms cool a good step or is it a little too casual or joining me from our studio in new york to discuss it is
11:51 pm
samantha daniels upscale matchmaker and the founder and president of samantha's table by coastal matchmaking service samantha thanks so much for joining us i have a interesting question because i know that you're a matchmaker and you know is this one of the things that you run into that people are a little shy talking about condoms talking about safe sex. i think at this point in our society people are ok talking about condoms and talking about safe sex i mean it's out in the forefront people are having sex so they talk about condoms they use condoms they don't use them but it's out there and people talk about it amy at least in my world they do but you know one of the interesting things is recently a study came out from indiana university because you know these groups are that are so up in arms are worried that this is going to rub off on children and send them the wrong signals that casual sex is ok i had it turns out that teenagers are actually much more likely to have save sex to use protection of than adults are why do you think that is well first of all kids are having sex i mean maybe we don't
11:52 pm
want them to have sex maybe we want them to wait longer but they are having sex so if they're having sex then they need to know about this message use a condom practice safe sex i think that kids are trying to be more and more aware these days and i think that with adults they feel like they're adults they can do what they want they want to use a condom they don't want to use a condom sometimes adults think that they're smarter than everyone else but you need to practice safe sex that's important or you're going to get in trouble do you feel like there's any kind of a double standard you know that men are the ones that are expected to to purchase the condoms and to you know carry on them on them all at all times or to have them you know in their drawer next to their bed in their apartment and that women kind of you know step back from that responsibility. i think it used to be that way but now i think that modern women working women they have condoms themselves i think that if a man is trying to have sex on a certain night he might have it in his wallet whereas the met the woman wouldn't
11:53 pm
have it in her handbag but i think that if two people are getting involved with each other they're going away for a week and they're starting to date i think that a modern woman will have a condom in our apartment just the same as a man would now we have a speaking of modern something that the catholic church isn't really best known for but this week we've had some interesting developments with the pope giving an interview where he essentially said that condom use is ok for male prostitutes and then the next day added also for people female prostitutes but you know only in the case because this is now a moral issue and you are morally obligated not to knowingly infect the other person and yet the catholic church still doesn't agree with the use of condoms in terms of as a method of birth control how do you think those confusing messages affect people i mean there are one billion catholics in this world. i mean i think that this is major mixed messages and we just don't want to hear those things i mean people want
11:54 pm
to know exactly what the catholic church thinks and i think that it's time for us to move into the modern century i think it's great that he says that it's ok sometimes but why not say that it's great to practice safe sex all the time why not get behind that because if you think about it when you're involved in prostitution he's saying be safer because you don't really know who you're going to be us and so it's more of a moral obligation but sometimes the people that we think we know the best are the ones that are the leaves least safe for us to have sex with so it's just the same thing and i think just take a stance make a strong message now the last thing i want to ask you is you know some of the critics of this rep or evolution program are saying that well in the instead of really teaching about you know health and about the need for condoms they're just trying to make condoms look cool you know by having people take a condom quiz asking what kind of condom you are without really offering information on the side or how to properly use them so i mean is there any danger in saying that condoms really are simply cool instead of you know safe and
11:55 pm
effective. i think that the reason why they're doing this condom quiz and all the little kind of kitschy cool things they're doing is because they're just trying to get people to look for more information when people are surfing the internet when they hit the web site when they take the quiz for that five minutes or those seven minutes condoms are on their mind there's advertisements all over there you can click on other things it just gets people to be thinking more about it for condoms to be on the tip of the tongue and that's helpful because then people are thinking i want to practice safe sex i want to use a condom so i think that they're loring people in with the cool kitschy fun quiz but at the end of the day it really is giving in to a message and it really is helping them get more information because the information is there for the taking on the internet you just have to get them somehow and then let them see what they can buy and it's especially important a city like d.c. that has the highest hiv rate in the country to samantha thanks so much for joining
