interview with veteran talk show host larry king. and washington lends itself in hot water after a new leak exposes its true colors opinions of a so-called corrupt raso raise questions over u.s. politicians and their stereotypical new. life from moscow if you're watching r t with me and he said no way it's four pm here in the russian capital two pm in zurich where voting on who will host the twenty eighteen and twenty twenty two football world cups has just kicked off in switzerland while russia's red for the first competition is believed to be a hot ticket well know who nets the world's top sporting events and billions of dollars of investment in about two hours let's not cross live to our correspondent paul. andrew farmer is for us sarah firth and you're in st petersburg and the city
8:02 am
is of course that would host games. where let's go to andrew for us of course has made the final presentation of its bed how did it go and. yeah that's right so well as you said the tension is building here because voting will start shortly but i think personally russia and england will be feeling quietly confident after their presentations in front of the feet executive committee the russians really tugging on the heartstrings of the committee members they started off with. distressing the point at least in europe never mind russia has never hosted a world cup before we also heard from the deputy prime minister igor she of all of you said that over the last hundred years russians have suffered greatly but there is now a new russia and if it was given the right to host the world cup it would trigger tens of billions of dollars of investment in the country we then heard from the double olympic pole vaulter champion isn't by she stressed that russia would help

the development women's football there and then there was the russian captain he told his life story he told how he started off as ennis and ended up playing for russia and hope that a world cup in russia might inspire others to follow in his footsteps. i wasn't the easiest get to manage when i was little my feel scorch so something can me something more than just a. football made me. it took me. to play. my coach believed in me but no one else did. and now we ask you to believe in us and culture a future of fresh. ok so the voting will start shortly and the process is relatively simple the winning

bid for the twenty eighteen and twenty twenty two world cups will need an absolute majority of twelve there are twenty two members on that thief executive committee it could mean in a final round of voting two teams are tied on eleven if that happens the fate of president sepp blatter will have the casting vote he has made positive noises about russia's bid over last few weeks and if russia did get through to that final round who knows he might push it russia's way but after winning the winning votes have been decided it's not clear but we do believe that the big teams will not know who's won but they aren't sure when we put into amber like sepp blatter will then head down head to the media center a make the announcements in front of the world media and we think that what happened around about four o'clock all right andrew fingers crossed of course let's go now to you go it was in cars on one of the cities which would host some of the match as if russia won you go or how's the russian bed being supported where you
8:05 am
are. while everybody here is. this football game this is absolutely the president of russia for lawsuits. which is a way to these two days of nonstop of. course but this is all going on since wednesday morning the supporters now five if i if you're going for national like going to war in support of russia's bid now it's a lot about why you have a city which is going to be your captain are here for the final decision is a mouse on which country is going to host the two thousand and eighteen world cup it's expected that over a thousand feet. maybe fifteen hundred sixteen hundred people are going to gather show to watch the final announcements on bad giant t.v. screen over there since you said if russia gets it is going to be one of the cities to close some of the matches so everybody's holding their finger or simply those
8:06 am
fingers crossed the understand that this is not only going to give a huge boost to the sport for sure not only. where the wine industry since always it already has a team which became the champions football championship she's going to get european champions league being understand that it's going to give a push to the school sports culture each time a country and it's going to help modernize the dozen cities in the country that's why it's really important everybody's you excited. right second largest city now there saraf earth is standing by how is st petersburg preparing for such a massive influx of people in case of success there are of course many avid football fans there. but we've seen a big focus on. the infrastructure and the transportation it's going to be very very important should the big twenty eighteen world cup be successful knows who waiting to find out who the successful bidding countries are here in st petersburg
8:07 am
construction is a need that is stadium is well underway that's in full swing and one such completed that would then qualify. the study finals of the world cup should russia be successful now it's just one of the new build stadiums planned this plenty of other cities where similar proposals are under way we've heard the russian bidding committee saying that they've made no secret of the work that still needs to be done they said that russia never said that it would be ready to. come twenty eighty this infrastructure and transportation upgrades will be in place and the transportation is another main focus it currently takes just three hours fourteen minutes to travel from st petersburg even less to gay from the capital to the city of mission no good and there are plans to link up many more cities to this express
8:08 am
railway network should the base be successful but very importantly we've heard much of these infrastructure transportation upgrades happening independently of the bits so regardless of the outcome these will be going ahead and they'll be plenty for it to fans to be looking forward to we are going to continue our coverage of russia has been throughout the day our correspondents placed around the world and the farmer in zurich sorry first in st petersburg and you go in thanks for that. well let's now get some expert analysis on russell's world cup and joining me in the studio is editor in chief of sports stars are you yvonne kalashnikovs thanks very much for being with us be frank to a brief frank with us is the finishing the finishing line of course is close is it too close to call who will win this bit. differently want russia to be the world cup host but as we so do in the presentation england's be very very strong. portugal and spain beat was impressive too but i bet on. the russian
8:09 am
race to the finish so i see fifty five percent chance to win forty five to russia my fourth start with you why do you think that is do you think that is because our star like back on was there what do you think makes the english bad stronger. no the main reason for to give the world cup to any nation to support the beat is the development of football infrastructure in the county england and spain and portugal already strong infrastructure stadiums. training places and russia we. actually have only one or two stadiums for the world cup and there is a long long road to the world cup so russia has the potential and it will feel that
8:10 am
would be the reason to give first of all how important would it be for russia to win this very important because we have to build this infrastructure build the stadiums actually. build all the roads build the high speed trains between the communications the hotels for such a big tournament so. it will be a major breakthrough for the russian now the two countries that you see as the front runners england and is going to host the next olympics but russia has never hosted a world cup do you think that in a way enhances its chances to win this but yes i think so and the russian delegation thought so in the morning because. they save the state of the fact that eastern europe never got the chance to host the world cup bot we know that. falls into twelve ukraine and poland will host europe and. i mean that
8:11 am
increases the chances to get the world cup i think. that's an important reason for russia to be in that used. which never the chance to host the tournament and that was of course one of the points made during the presentation well we certainly will be watching i'm sure you have your fingers crossed even on that kalashnikov from sport dot are you thank you very much for. something really. what you want to get down to. is on the. line when we sold looms on the international for a song for the future of the. world cup. final it will be hosting the world's largest sporting event on the. question.

coming up to twelve minutes past the hour here with artsy live from moscow now in an interview on u.s. prime time t.v. vladimir putin outlined the stark choice ahead on european defense either moscow becomes an equal partner or it will be forced to put more missiles on its borders and is going to you can reports now the russian prime minister also told larry king there will be no rivalry between him and to me in the upcoming presidential race. larry king started off with a question that is a big and make money not only in the west but also in russia will lead to nowhere to run for office in two thousand and twelve what then basically said they will figure something out with president medvedev sort of indicating that they are first of all partners with the current president and don't see each other as rivals took their eye actually larry king brought up the comical comparison with batman and robin that comparison that a u.s. diplomat gave to a russian leadership to the lot russian leadership in a classified cable hosted by weekly experience with the prime minister which is
8:13 am
that. you knew that mr medvedev and i were tackling the issue of future cooperation which is actually come on how we were going to build up our relations when deciding on how to design the election campaign the presidential election in two thousand and eight we fully realize that many would try to sue to school with you know a common approach is building the state of russia and economic development it's because of cooperation is a significant factor in the country's internal posi put frankly speaking we could not imagine that it was going to be done in such a bold pushy and impudent way such a claim is of course seem to be insulting us pride in provoking steps which would destroy the beneficial cooperation in managing the country i must say that we've got used to it already and i asked those who make such attempts to calm down. promise the ports and larry king certainly had their touch upon some major international headlines for example larry asked about prism a debate of three says they plan that that if washington then and nato don't figure

out a joint sort of even approach to the planned missile defense shield in europe it could trigger an arms race and puts and made it very clear that it is the last thing russia would want russia's actions will only be in reaction he said and russia will never be the one to provoke an arms race. but if we receive very negative to our suggestions and moreover if there's an additional threat in the form of a new missile shield new. russia will have to maintain its security by taking certain measures new missile strike systems against the new threats in your own borders and create new missiles it's not a choice we do not want it and it's not a threat in any way we're just talking about what it waiting for us in case we can't reach an agreement on collaboration and that's it i repeat we do not want this little or no little talking about president obama have a positive assessment of is there a national effort to say he was thankful. for you know softening kind of the

negative rather a cold wash ending practice for for the fact that he scrapped bush national missile defense planning in europe something that irritated washoe a lot. russian officials are brushing aside allegations released by whistle blowing web site wiki leaks the revealed secret u.s. diplomatic cables claimed the country is riddled with corruption and crime the documents are the latest in a growing list of leaks coming from american officials as our teams were in a port and i reports the bases have spilled over washington. a global partner in peace or paranoid super power hungry for secrets our diplomats are doing what diplomats do around the world every day which is build relationships negotiate advance our interests and work to find common solutions to complex problems that's what they do but according to documents released by wiki leaks in two thousand and nine u.s. diplomats around the world were in fact directed to gather saif i take details
8:16 am
including facial images fingerprints iris scans and even d.n.a. from u.n. officials among the targeted ambassadors from russia china france and britain even secretary-general ban ki moon many people didn't understand what that meant or that mean the diplomats do spying on the side of the order of operation allegedly came from u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton and as the u.s. assumes the presidency of the security council today that afternoon these revelations will probably be seen as an undesirable distraction but little more it seems only belgium openly criticized washington for mixing diplomatic work and outright espionage the united nations is not in a position to comment on the authenticity of the document purporting to request information gathering activities official reaction from the u.n. itself only went as far as reminding member states that international treaties per hit spying at the u.n. their response has been so weak to being spied on by the u.s.
8:17 am
in large part because the u.s. is just you know it's the behemoth of the u.n. they pay a lot of the bills but they also have the ability to veto a second term for ban ki-moon the u.s. is the u. . faddist financier set to contribute more than two and a half billion dollars in two thousand and eleven and this is not the first time the u.s. has been caught spying. back in two thousand and three in the lead up to the invasion of iraq the national security agency was reportedly conducting secret surveillance operation providing intelligence on the voting intentions of u.n. members this time around diplomats were asked to provide information on computer upgrade security measures passwords and personal encrypted and keys of their human colleagues the exhausting level of the details allegedly demanded about top u.s. officials has not only left the u.s. red faced but it's also caused some to question whether washington was ultimately
8:18 am
laying the groundwork for surveillance or hocking operations here at the world body had quarters for governments that are constantly talking about democracy the transparent see in poor or near them blah blah blah in the world and say that they're invading all sorts of countries in order to promote the new democratic spirit and then they behave this way i'm sorry but i think it's time for some outrage while washington repeatedly claims to be rebuilding and repairing relations around the world the image of the u.s. as big brother watching at the u.n. may be repairable what is the u.s. policy is this u.s. policy going forward and you know it was in the past will it be going forward and if so you know people better hold on to their wallets around here while the u.s. appears to be left holding the smoking gun. r.t. new york. talk more about the latest wiki leak we're now joined live from paris by
8:19 am
john laughlin director of the institute for democracy and cooperation thanks for being with us mr laughlin now the u.s. has been left red faced by the revelations but i want to talk about russia the latest leak cables allege the country is rife with corruption and crime something of course no arts country is free from but it's also not news to any russian people know this the president knows this so what kind of headlines do you think wiki leaks is trying to make here that's already something people know. well the allegation made by the american diplomats is not just that russia is a victim of corruption and crime but instead that the corruption and crime in russia is being controlled by the government in other words that russia as a matter of state those were the headlines this morning that ruf russia as a matter of state. gang at the head of which is of course led to mir putin that was the allegation. what wiki leaks is trying to do i don't think wiki leaks is trying to say anything about russia at all these are after all american documents all that
8:20 am
they tell us things about what american diplomats think they don't communicate any information or at least not much information about the world at large what they do tell us about is the mentality of american diplomats themselves and i don't think it's really news to hear that many american diplomats have an extremely negative view of russia that we knew already or themes that beliefs are in russia are very much in the headlines today and some of those documents detail alleged that scams were orchestrated by former moscow mayor yuri luzhkov he of course with sacked months ago what's the point of leaking site outdated known information. well again i don't think we can leaks itself has a policy on this i think they have obviously received a large amount of documents which they have leaked possibly without having read all of them after all there are an awful a large number of documents so i don't think that it makes sense to search for
8:21 am
a motive in this way i think that there is information contained within these documents that has been put online for no particular reason whatsoever instead i think what is interesting about them is the overall vision that they give of the united states and of its diplomatic surface service and i have to say that when one looks at these documents in the round one is overwhelmed and frankly disgusted by the impression one has of a political class in america which is fundamentally infantile what i mean by that is that they as we can see from these cables they have a very i would say retarded view of the world that what you just said about about the reaction to these cables how credible do you think they are which reaction the reaction of just being distasteful and outraged that this is happening that the u.s. diplomats are saying these kind of things. if you're asking
8:22 am
me i'm sorry i don't fully understand your question who's the reaction exactly regulate based on what i want to know is how credible you think these cables are do you think the information we got from the leaks is actually things that were said and written by u.s. diplomats as far as i know yes i don't haven't. as far as i know they're authentic my understanding of the reaction in washington is that there are various kinds of reaction but i'm not aware of people having called into question their authenticity on the contrary i thought that american officials have been told not to comment on them one way or the other. do you think that we can link could be serving someone's political interests. not really no i i noticed that mr putin made this speculation in his larry king interview yesterday i don't think that's a fruitful avenue of inquiry to go down my own view is that this really does lift
8:23 am
the curtain as i was saying a moment ago on the american mentality on america's fundamental intellectual incapacity to deal with the outside world in any other way than by dividing it up into good guys and bad guys this really for me is the message we're coming which comes across from these documents that there is an incredibly immature and frankly dangerous attitude on the part of american diplomats to categorize the world only in terms of whether people are friendly towards america and whether people whether countries want to be like america this shows i think the real intellectual floor at the heart of american foreign policy because it shows that america at least the state department at any rate is the victim of a sort of political autism in other words a political in the billeted to deal with the other to deal with other people with all the difficulty and differences that that implies so i don't think that there's a plot going on here i think that these documents have been obtained one way or the

other and we can leaks which has given itself this role of leaking information has done it and that's all there is to it that's my view anyway john mark then live from paris thank you very much for your input we're up to date now from the news desk business is next here on r t with you again stay with us. hungry for the full story we've got it for. the biggest issues get a human voice face to face with the news makers. would be soon which brightened if you knew in advance from funds to pressure.
