a football team spartak moscow where both gatherings got violent let's cross live now to our t.v. you can. and sean thomas who are following these latest developments sean let's go to you first fans are now moving towards a court building what is that like where you are what's happening. well right now it seems that everything is quiet so far but there is a significant police presence that has gathered here in anticipation of a possible group moving here from the square that's what we have been told right now in fact we are in front of the courthouse where chair is being the proceedings against him are being held he is the person who is suspected of killing you go to the very last monday in a brawl after a soccer match that's a little bit of the background this is not the first time with the groups have gathered in protest of this event. spartak fans as well as other soccer fans from

around russia have staged several incidents in st petersburg and here in moscow as well also in that wednesday at a. soccer match there was an incident where soccer fans rushed the field they rushed the pitch they also interrupted the game this is actually a little bit of the background of what's happening here and so we're waiting here to see if these fans will come here to this spot and make their presence known here as well in front of the courthouse. i got three now of course is on yes and they are square where the violence broke out first of all what is happening there and also is this violence all about football. and you say it seems that everything has quieted down so far we have heard reports that the people are moving away from here and towards my colleague john hughes outside of moscow for a house and we have seen a lot of people leaving so far it is quiet but there are still as you can see behind me a heavy police presence here in the heart of the. russian capital of course the

russian kremlin is just a few steps away and the violence that broke out here earlier is not was not all caused by football fans according to what we have managed to see there were a lot of people here shouting out racist slogans. various throwing bottles lighting flares and generally instigating violence and we do believe that some of those instigators were not actually involved in a football fan club or actually football fans at all there are members of groups such as the movement against illegal immigration various other nationalist organizations who protest. and choose a gathering such as these to instigate violence to propagate their nationalist ideas and soul of those that were detained that we've seen detained a lot of them do seem to be belonging to a new nationalist movement as opposed to actual football fan clubs but of course
9:05 am
the violence that broke right here was quite significant and there were a lot of people injured because bottles were being thrown people got hit on the head in the face we know that a lot of the protesters actually clashed with riot police they were detained and dragged off to a police vans and taken into custody driven off to various police stations and it is a quite a frightening sight it was because this of course is the heart of the capital and just before christmas time it is all very beautifully decorated a huge christmas tree stands on money isn't a square that fell victim to all of the violence as well a lot of the christmas tree decorations were broken off and hurled at riot police so it looks to be quite a mess right now but it has quieted down and perhaps this will be the end of the violence today. sean a good got your core theory of a chain of violence as it's not going to have any effect on the team itself. largely believe or. it does in fact on wednesday during the euro police. well
9:06 am
actually during a champions league match there were some incidents where fans rushed pitched e.c. bakiyev and. this is the the way for the actual governing body of this says that they couldn't disqualify spartak from the europa league championship as well so it does actually have a negative effect u.a.e. for governing body are going to make their verdict on december sixteenth whether the fans and their actions will have an effect on the team so it is harming the image of the team even though the team itself has nothing to do with these incidents. get three now we're hearing there's also been violence in st petersburg of course another commemoration was being held there for this what exactly do we know about what's happening in the northern capital. and you said despite the fact that it is very called both in moscow and in st petersburg tensions were running high in both cities and st petersburg earlier there was also

a rally commemorating you go to seed of the football fan who was murdered last week but that turned violent as well there was quite a small rally of course not a one of such magnitude as the one here in my new years in esquire and so therefore not a lot of police presence was at the scene but football fans started throwing ice. at the police starting to blocks of ice lighting flares setting off fires that turned violent as well a lot more police officers were immediately deployed to the scene we know that some people have also been detained in st petersburg as well as in moscow so it does seem that these tensions are spreading are no longer located to just moscow but to st petersburg as well where yet another commemorative rally turned violent just a few hours ago all right catherine thomas following these latest developments for us in moscow thank you. and other news the u.s. can. promoting human rights worldwide
