a brawl on monday let's cross live now to our three nazario and sean thomas for the details first to you covering what you are in the heart of moscow where this violence broke out the softer new st petersburg's been also marking this day which has descended into riots have the tensions cooled is everything under control now in the two cities. and he said as you can see right now everything is back to normal traffic is going down the city center and it's almost hard to imagine that just a few hours ago this place the very heart of moscow mine isn't a square just a few steps away from the kremlin was the scene of the extreme violence thousands of football fans were gathered here to protest and commemorate the death of one of their own a football fan i mean who was shot dead just over a week just a week ago just last week and the riots broke out at this own sanction meeting where protesters were throwing bottles of fireworks starting fires throwing rocks

at riot police who were trying to do their best to vent tame the violence to prevent it from spreading further we've heard police. asked to not give into provocations to not partake in the violence but still many people were injured we saw them covered in blood being taken away by ambulances to get treated a lot of people were detained after they clashed with riot police here in the heart of the capital it's all quiet right now but we do know that there is an increased police presence in the metro because a lot of those who were here actually left of the city center that way we also know that a group of people were here attacked a few people in the metro. health was offered and they were detained a number of other people were detained in the underground as well on this station up with a doubt metro station they were detained by riot police after they attempted to propagate them so it was a very tense day. it still seems that tensions are not completely over but at the

moment everything looks calm here in moscow where st petersburg was also this was a scene for violence where you get another commemorative rally was underway there the protesters also started throwing ice and bottles at riot police a lot more policemen were immediately deployed to the area over sixty people there detained as while bringing the total number of those detained in the riots today to over a hundred and twenty that's how many people have at least on the floor behind the the instigators of the violence but not many that morning to police sources not all of them were aggressors many just came to pay their respects but it quickly got out of hand when some people decided to play out on those are the clashes between protesters and riot police let's just take a second to listen to what the police chief of moscow had to say that led to meet her collect points and. some people have reacted very violently to the death of the

nationalist movements such as the movement against illegal immigration and various other nationalist movements made infiltrated this commemorative rally and started provoking people of course as the day grew and the cold set and they started drinking alcohol of course adding to the mix of tensions already running high and that is what we believe that what the officials here are what we heard them say that is what primarily instigated the violence here and in st petersburg. so on let's go back to you the actions of course the spark tack moscow fans have caused problems for russian special forces has affected the actual football team. well i mean so that is actually one of the unfortunate side effects of this entire situation yes is the short answer but on the wednesday there was a match in the champions league between spartak in slovakia and in that match fans actually rushed to the pitch twice in two separate incidents involved in violent

are from the christian science monitor thanks for being with us fred today's violence is it a reflection of anger at the founds death or is there something else behind this well you know that. the combination of football and nationalist passions is the one that causes sometimes the ups and violence all over europe and russia hasn't been a stranger to that sort of thing. and we know that in russia there are extremist groups though there are gangs of skinheads there are there is the movement against illegal immigration who mix with them and try to push. this in a certain way so we have had this quite a bit. however it seems to me that. we should also listen to the complaints a lot of them say and i don't think that all those one thousand people who are in the square today are racists. they complain that.

they don't trust the police to investigate the death of their friend there are reasons too they're just generic christians in russia not to trust the police and they have specific complaints about vista geishas what i found often because you know there are huge numbers of people from the caucasus living in moscow it's a very multinational city and there have been potential triggers to wars in chechnya have been cycles of terrorism just come here in moscow and there been horrific acts there was a war with georgia a couple of years ago there were things that could have set off ethnic tensions in this city and and did not do so russians seem to be pretty resilient and not receptive to racist appeals so i think that we shouldn't overblow this you know immediately leap to conclusion that you know you know that there's racist violence

running amok in moscow i think it's a really complicated but potentially dangerous situation that happened here several were injured in the clashes with police how do you think it escalated to that obviously people did gather to commemorate the death of this sparked talk found we did we do know that from our correspondents that there were racist slogans being chanted so do you think it's a mix yes i think i think there's no go that there are extremist groups we know that we know that i interviewed leaders of them and. football fans are natural constituency they were mixed with them. you know you can you get situations through large gatherings of people and you can turn them and i think that certainly is what's happened in the past you know and and that may help to explain why you did see clear ethnically motivated violence there in downtown moscow today do you think we'll see more large scale rallies. well and again i
