11:30 pm
now apparently those on the far right have nothing better to do this holiday season and to attack pop culture this time they've turned their eye or towards comic book characters the conservative side the astute bloggers they've got an issue with the latest batman out this month in the batman annual and detective comics annual they are just completely a live it about the latest storyline where bruce wayne travels to france recruits a muslim name knight rider to join the french outpost of his new batman a conglomerate and a new character knight rider would be the french version of batman but these two bloggers who says that they're dedicated to exposing left wing propaganda they are outraged the d.c. comics was bruce way of recruiting an algerian muslim who lives in france a muslim who are they want to know why he didn't hire a french boy or girl with a real sense of justice and stead of hiring a quote oppressed minority now the writer wonders out loud of bruce wayne is going next to the gaza strip to find a muslim who thinks of him or herself as oppressed by the israelis or to sweden to
11:31 pm
find a muslim living in mamo which has long had troubles of its own with suburban jihad is give me a break you guys my question for this blog is why do you a problem with muslims being superheroes do you only see them as terrorists and by the way it's a comic book character we have bigger issues in this country than comic book characters so the website of these two bloggers is tonight's tool time winner for being islamophobia first ready here fear and hate and especially doing all that we should be celebrating the holidays and fixing the economy. well a new gallup poll shedding light on america's religious beliefs according to the study forty percent of americans believe that god is fully responsible for creating humans that seems kind of shocking right it seems like our world is can we back or it's all progress has gone out the window but it turns out of this statistic is actually down from a similar study conducted two years ago now when this poll came out the internet was buzzing about it and frankly it seems like even news reports didn't know how to handle the study conservative web sites they spy it's as lot
11:32 pm
a losing believers some other sites are spinning it as human beings being straight up stupid with headlines that say things like seventy eight percent of americans doubt evolution seventy eight percent of americans believe creationist myth rather than science but what does this study really reveal about americans aside from showing that forty percent of americans believe in creationism the poll also shows that thirty eight percent of people are still on the fence saying that they do believe in evolution but they think that god did have a say in the overall process and here's where things get really interesting if we do a political breakdown of the poll while a mere thirty four percent of democrats and independents believe in creationism a whopping fifty two percent of republicans subscribe to it why am i not surprised at that just goes to show that this country is still very divided when it comes to the most basic of debates and the shock of the media is that sometimes we don't even know what to think of each other. last week the world saw a number of developments thanks to stem cell research
11:33 pm
a man living in journey germany who had both leukaemia and aids no longer has any detectable each of these cells in his blood following a stem cell transplant for is the kenya three years ago then scientists in germany successfully grew hair follicles from stem cells of animals hoping that that could lead to a possible cure for baldness both developments come with caution as well as off and they have some people asking if this means the embryonic stem cell research isn't needed since these recent developments have come without it or if it only proves that it's all the more important for finding cures in our future we're here to discuss that with me is sean tipton the director of public affairs at the american society for reproductive medicine and wendy wright president of concerned women for america and i thank you both for joining me now i by no means i have a stem cell research expert here but to me i mean this sounds incredible the fact that somebody no longer has hiv the fact that baldness might be cured some day with this that's a sign of things to come why don't we do more of this well i think it's
11:34 pm
a good question i think what the scientific community in this country is interested in is promoting all forms of stem cell research so we can get the answers to find out what is going to work and what won't work we don't know the answer that's why they call it research because you have to ask again and again and again and that's all the scientists in this country want to have our best scientists working with the best materials to get the quickest best answers for treatments for cures but at the same time stem cell research especially embryonic stem cell research are something that has been hotly debated in this country it was banned during the bush administration obama now would lifted that ban but a partial ban excuse me of i'm not quite sure you know why why it's such a debate i mean if we've seen the results of what some stem cell research can do then why don't care well first of all it wasn't a ban it had to do a little bonding but also look at when ever there's a new story of a great success with stem cells it's always adult stem cells it's never embryonic. research and what's fascinating is all the hype that went around embryonic stem cell research in the first several years and even now the claims that it would cure
11:35 pm
parkinson's and alzheimer's much of the michael j. fox said it said it would eliminate diseases senator arlen specter said it was the fountain of youth and get with guess what in their own timeframe five to ten years even with state funding of embryonic stem cell research federal funding of embryonic stem cell research they're still not even and you were close any kind of treatment or care all the treatments and cures that have come from stem cells have come from ethical adult stem cells not because that's true is that a reason that perhaps. using what's known as adult stem cells to treat things like leukemia for forty years the science that animals are earth that is fifty years old now stem cells are about cells or eleven or twelve years old meanwhile so we get opponents of some sort research so you don't have any cures but you can't do the research because you don't have any cures so it's a little difficult to come up with cures when you can't really do the research so important there are two trials of embryonic stem cell work one to deal with spinal
11:36 pm
cord injury one to deal with vision and vision loss that are in the final stages of if da trials to see what their efficacy and safety is in humans so the process is working its way through but it takes a while particularly when you have strong political opposition to it well i mean let me point out that actually animal and stem cell research has been around for over thirty years and the reason why there's such a problem with embryonic stem cell research but animal and human is because they tend to turn into tumors deadly tumors even the size of up to a football and that's why there's not been the research are going into human trials because they've proven to be so dangerous in animal trials with adult stem cells you don't have that problem they don't turn into tumors they're ethical they're efficacious and and when you compare that with embryonic. cells that are proven to be dangerous in animals and hand millions close to billions of dollars have been
11:37 pm
spent on embryonic stem cell research in california in two thousand and four the voters decided to spend three billion dollars on embryonic stem cell research six years later what do they have to show for it three hundred million dollars spent on luxurious buildings and nothing that's going toward actually helping patients so the problem is then that the embryonic stem cell research shows have used patients to push their own political agenda to get money for themselves but the patients are not the one seeing any benefits it's only those that have a political agenda that's in the benefit well it's interesting that the major scientists in this country and throughout the world and the major patient advocacy groups for conditions like diabetes parkinson's disease alzheimer's multiple sclerosis spinal cord who see this terrific benefit they want people who want to oppose the research do so out of a particular ethical construct that they have that they are welcome to we can accommodate this great privilege pluralistic nation of ours people who oppose blood transfusions for religious reasons they don't have to get them but they shouldn't
11:38 pm
stop me from getting people who oppose animal research for a moral reason they don't have to benefit from their research but they shouldn't keep my children from getting their diabetes cured. just because they are very close i think i have to ask the right because often in this country over many debates not just with stem cell research it's someone else's morals being applied on the general population even though perhaps we don't all have the same morals we don't all subscribe to this exact same religion so so then why should morals really be a part of what we're talking about human dignity and using human beings for experimentation there is universal agreement on that just look at the nuremberg trials that were done after the nazi tear and there is universal agreement that experimentation should should not be done that harms or kills a human being and would be the argument that you're making it's not only moral it's fiscal california that is now cutting billions of dollars from education and is
11:39 pm
cutting funding health care for over a million poor children are continue to fund their unethical embryonic stem cell research and as far away as any discussion because i feel like so many of the developments that we do see with stem cell research happen not in the u.s. right we are lot of times here about stories of things that are happening in germany both of these stories that i just came up with came from germany so are we falling behind the rest of the world because we're i don't know is it because we're not running away or is no question that there's a lot of excitement in the international scientific community about a mixture of so research there is no question the scientific advancements don't care about political powers and there is an economic question that we do stand to lose our economic we've built the world's greatest biomedical research and prize right here the united states our last fifty years and we're talking about get on the sidelines as we saw this with the advent of in vitro fertilization oppose in this country for reasons religious reasons the people who developed that were all over the world thirty years later we've gotten used to it and we give them
11:40 pm
a nobel prize so what you see in science again and again and again is this new idea frightens me therefore i think we ought to wait on it but then when the real benefits come in people say you know what if this is going to help my little girl with the. he was so why should america fall behind a century of as the rest of the world can cure hiv aids first with the rest of the world can cure parkinson's disease all cancers farce then why should we sit around let's remind them you are where the cures are coming from adult stem cell research which is happening in the united states and parkinson's and alzheimer's every disease that the advocates for embryonic stem cell research claim that research would provide some kind of miraculous cure they're already being treated with adult stem i don't know a lot of not knowing are going to. they're being senator senator there have been there's been some treatment but there's been none would ever accept or research let's point out that senator harkin on the same day that he said that we need to allow him to accept some research to for the provide promise for those with juvenile diabetes on that same day the journal for american medical association
11:41 pm
published the results of a study showing that adult stem cells have reversed juvenile diabetes so you know what i have a book here on famous hoaxes and scams throughout history and one day there's going to be a chapter in here for the embryonic stem cell great hoax and orally be that opponents go down is that the church when the officers. and to the people who were who invented the in vitro for the greys and i need to know what history many christian only time will tell of a clearly this is a heated debate here you know and it's something that we will have to watch and progress obviously takes time and it's being made in other places around the world thank you so much for being here. now still to come on tonight's show some u.s. senators say that they'll derail the start treaty because don't ask don't tell was passed over the weekend plugged in a moment on their very titled behavior and there is talk in britain of blocking porn on all computers and making everybody ask internet providers for access to it so is this a smart move to protect children or is this overstep what the government will

if. which brightened. soon from phones to impressions. from stunts on t.v. . i'd like to start my unplugged moment tonight by congratulating congress on voting to repeal don't ask don't tell this weekend that really is incredible it's a move that's been long overdue it no longer forces those men and women who willingly defend this country to hide their sexual orientation to do so this is a huge step for civil rights in america but as usual there are
11:45 pm
a few bitter members of congress who have their panties all up in a bunch the progress is being made that this is becoming a more just society and they're using that anger to oppose the new start treaty which is to be voted on in the senate tomorrow senator lindsey graham being the primary example after making numerous statements on how disappointed he was that don't ask don't tell was repealed he claimed he wasn't ready to debate the new start treaty because well he just didn't have the time to even think about it with all that hard work that congress have forced to do this week. in conclusion to my colleagues it's been a week from hell it's been a week over you dealing with a lot of big issues from taxes to funding the government to special interest politics and i've had some time to think about start but not a lot and it's really wearing on the body this is a major piece of it all this is really been the week from hell because you actually have to work don't forget last week we told you that congress only works one
11:46 pm
hundred and thirty seven days out of the entire year now let's also not forget that the new start treaty was signed by president obama and the gates of in april so you have had plenty of time to think about this one senator graham let's get down to what really bugs you the don't ask don't tell was repealed the gay members of the military no longer have to hide who they are or be discharged because of it and sort of the ground made that very clear the don't ask don't tell was his problem on c.b.s.'s face the nation that if you really want to have a chance of passing start you better start over and do it the next congress because this land has been poisoned yet poisoned did you hear that senator graham is so bitter that discrimination has become illegal in the military that he now wants to make democrats the obama administration all of the american people pay by not voting on start which he previously was going to vote on that's the best reason that is the only reason he has not to reduce the amount of nuclear weapons in this world that's just pathetic that's called cutting off the nose to spite the face
11:47 pm
that's called him a church or something you think that a u.s. senator would be about but once again sort of the gramm has proven that we have spoiled selfish babies that are trying to run this country. now the british government has a plan to block internet porn and set of using parental controls allowing people to opt out pornography sites will now be completely blocked if all goes as the government desires in order to access porn sites will have to opt in that is specifically request access from your i is p.c. for the specific website the you wish to visit because everybody loves sharing information like that right now this proposition has opened web advocates up in arms saying not only should this be something that parents manage rather than eyes because but also raising questions as to what will count as explicit content for the british government says that the entire plan is based on combating the sexualization of children as surveys have shown that one in three children aged ten
11:48 pm
in britain have viewed pornography on the internet but is this really the only way to protect kids out of the brits do it could america be next well joining me to discuss it is katherine manga ward senior editor of reason magazine and reason dot com and chris clapp logan with internet safety one o one or ladies thank you both for being here so much chris i'm going to start with you because i know this is definitely you know one of the issues that you focus on do you think that banning porn the blocking it on the internet essentially is really the best way to help children well i think that one thing should be clear this actually just creates a system in which adults need to opt in it doesn't block it it doesn't prevent adults who are legally able to access this content from accessing this concert but we know that you cited as well one out of three kids age ten are accessing pornography online what we know is that the u.k. is actually taking a comprehensive approach to preventing sexual violence against children and preventing sexual assault against children and also trying to look at this issue
11:49 pm
because we know that he has really become a mental health issue at this stage and so we think that this is a positive step on behalf of the government but what's wrong with i don't know parental controls with making parents you know monitor what their kids are. being on the internet rather than having the guy government monitor everything you do on the internet and having to ask permission to see a specific porn site it just seems like a really long road to get there i think that's exactly right and the words for the children almost always start you down a road that ends up restricting the behavior of adults and that's what we're talking about here i mean there's lots of ways to keep kids keep pouring out of the faces of kids including just the good old fashioned put the computer in the kitchen and turn it around so you can see what they're looking at all the way through really good solid technological approaches instead we've got the british government putting pressure and i think it's important to note here at this point it's voluntary and i think that's particularly offensive you're basically calling in a bunch of private companies you're saying if you don't do what we want now will make you do it later that sounds like what the us government does all the time but
11:50 pm
he still that's true and it's reprehensible here well i mean i think that the u.k. has actually done well job of making sure that kids are protected they did this when it comes with child pornography they put pressure on i asked piece to make sure that they weren't actively allowing individuals to access child pornography these are sexual abuse images of children i think in this instance as well they're bringing players to the table they're talking about you know ways that they can make sure that kids are not acts i see this constant it's not about censorship it's not about legislating morality it's about protecting children from harmful from harmful content and what we know is that so many kids are actually access and it's content and despite the fact that we've been saying for over a decade yes parents should use filtering technology they should use panel controls you know that there's been a huge increase in the amount of kids who are accessing acting out sexually there's been a huge spike in the amount of kids who are sexually abusing other kids because of
11:51 pm
the mis education they've had through internet pornography all due respect this is about legislating morality there's a big big difference between child porn and adult porn consumption and that's child porn is illegal it victimizes children adult porn. action is consenting adults voluntarily consuming but but for years we've had some very strong measures to protect kids from offline interaction with content that's harmful to them in the same way that you can't walk into a convenience store as a ten year old and act as violent i think that we should have the same measures when it comes to internet pornography that an adult should have easy access to that content but kids should not and what the government has found is that they need to actually take a step in this direction to protect kids because unfortunately it is cheap pervasive in their culture just brings up a lot of questions right as well who is going to decide what type of material kids are allowed to see and kids are what really constitutes pornography or what is explicit material and some people are saying that who knows maybe now your flicker account no longer accessible because of some pictures you may have posted online
11:52 pm
and you know i mean does this really open the door for some dangerous steps down the line who knows and maybe even t.v. shows because those are accessible to kids too they might see something that my friend the damage warped their young minds there was actually really embarrassing incident in the u.k. with child porn restrictions which again are operating on the same principle of restricting the content at the level for a while in the u.k. it was just a brief period but pedia was banned it was it was locked down under this list because the nonprofit group that keeps the list of banned sites decided that a single album cover in one entry of the millions of entries on wikipedia did qualify as child porn and lock the whole thing down not to say that wasn't fixable it was but it just demonstrates the danger of giving anyone but power to make about it later that evening in government and for let's say that for a moment something is blocked and then it's corrected because they've actually taken the appropriate measures to make sure that they're not displaying child pornography they're not you know putting forth images that are adult
11:53 pm
oriented or which are really only age appropriate for adults from our perspective that really is a preventive measure that we think is appropriate for him. it's really appropriate for the government to tell you what is age appropriate for you to be watching. because i mean it is like i would say that it's the job of your parents to do that at this point the government is asking the main players to come to the table they're asking also these individuals to actually rate their content to see whether or not it's age appropriate for whether it's you know a teenage audience or whether it's for a mature adult audience and we've seen that in the print and broadcast media for years and years and is it too much to ask for the online world we think not i think it is too much to ask and in particular i think again you have to say you're saying we're just asking people to come to the table we're just asking people to kind of contribute to this discussion it's all backed by the threat of legislation and
11:54 pm
government action is there any chance that we would see something like this happen in the u.s. i mean right now this is just the british government that's talking about it but i mean if we've seen the reaction of our government obviously this is a different case but i'm just saying in wiki leaks with things being out in the open they clearly want to take all the steps they can to to rein in the internet to be able to regulate in the interests of government is always going to be just to censor to the extent that they can and i think we have great safeguards here in the united states stronger ones in many cases than are in the u.k. doesn't mean it can't happen here and i think this is a perfect example of we start with child porn then we move to porn for adults consumed by adults you know there's other content down the line that governments find might find inconvenient or dangerous or threatening to the children for people to consume and there's a reason to draw a hard line and say none of it should be censored i mean from our organization perspective we really think that it is important to protect children as they develop healthily sexually and it is worth that extra step that it is taking in the
11:55 pm
u.k. potentially where don't have to opt into this type of content it's not about censorship it's not about blocking adults from this content out of the area because you have the right dear peeved please let me go to i want to know that you're going to do the right. you know the same everywhere you live there's actually passes they have it all for the children that's what they say thank you both for being here now before we go it's time for our tweet of the day where earlier i spoke about senate republicans trying to stall and delay the start treaty and just about everything else in this lame duck session so now democrats are asking what else might they try to delay how about tonight's litter eclipse there's just simply not enough time for debate is better republicans will hold up anything with a lame excuse that's it for tonight's show thanks for tuning in make sure you come back tomorrow is the senate actually going to vote to start treaty tomorrow we'll speak with max program from youth center for american progress about all the latest details in the meantime don't forget to become a fan of the a lot of show on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed any of tonight's show or any other night you can always catch it all the you tube dot com
