decided i'm just so enraged by these all these atheist displays in trying to push jesus to the back seat on christmas day but people like head humanist roy spec hard say they aren't trying to push jesus anywhere when they see these ads it does give them pause that it gives them a chance to think about the issue and the issues are plenty two wars record high unemployment and a budget crisis. but apparently the real group well the one atheist group is putting a new spin on the war on christmas if you listen to the media this is the truth we're trying to to take a shot at christmas they don't have any guts if they did so and so they go after the muslims. and vague he's referring to is the quote unquote other america the folks who want religion out of public life. and on the opposite side of humanity now with all the political correctness here in the

united states like the fact that you can't call it a christmas tree anymore you have to call a holiday tree you can't say merry christmas you have to say happy holidays some groups are taking action like this religious group here god and america's leaders dot com this is the web site they created you can log on and take a ten question waterville choice quiz about which founding father or politician said it which really just quote but with all that outrage and all the back and forth much of the rest of america thinks things private over politics right now we're focusing all. moral and religious issues instead of focusing on the actual things like the economy and the wars and these like badasses destructions but for those americans who want religion any time any place anywhere it isn't just a distraction there definitely has been a war on christmas for a long time and brian fisher is part of the countless conservative christian organizations that are formed to send this kind of message to single most inclusive thing that you can do this time of year is wish people a merry christmas we think it's appropriate to ask them to acknowledge that jesus

real problems that this country is facing we're here to discuss it with me from our studio in new york is christopher chambers georgetown university professor and author of the blog not turner's revenge chris thanks so much for joining us. if you're wearing a santa hat so i was so i don't know do you think a bear is a war on christmas going on here are you here to protect it or your christmas crusader. i am not a christmas crusader i am just full of the christmas spirit because christmas is in the heart. so no there was no war on christmas it's that is a you know what is going on here alone is basically it is not a war on christmas it is a war to get your books what they call the war on christmas either by media outlets ironically by outlets like news corp which is owned by fox or wal-mart or c yours or anything else or any there are people who advertise on media outlets is

a war for books christmas is a marketing but man it is about marketing so when somebody says happy holidays it's basically a way to be super inclusive to get everybody's books it's analogous to what was going on that conservatives were upset about you know spanish language being all over the place is that as if it was a conspiracy to kill conspiracy by liberals no it was a conspiracy by corporations to market this is panic americans to get their money i mean it has nothing to do with politics it's all about marketing we don't think that some people out there though that there's a little bit too much political correctness going on that you can't say merry christmas you have to say happy holidays that some people don't like it if you say that it's a christmas tree and you know i mean it's one thing to say well sure the more names that you give a holiday season the more items there and you can sell with that name but i mean there are people out there that you know do genuinely seem like they get offended. well i mean these these people are probably religious conservatives anyway they're

going to get offended by a lot of stuff what they should be offended about ironically is the secularization of christmas for marketing purposes i mean even the supreme court has basically a pint when you're talking about the tiffany scenes etc etc is that there is and intense secular tide. that americans have to christmas regardless of their religion which is separate from the religious context i mean even when you look at the religious context alone and it was a bunch of guys a bunch of dude's baby eight hundred years ago decided to put christmas on december twenty fifth so it would coincide with a pagan roman holiday same with easter i mean there is an earthly part of this holiday that you know is is basically a construct of convenience it is it is almost something that we've made up the

religious aspect of it should be something that's personal that's joyful and that's that you share with your family it's not a political issue but i mean it has become a secular marketing issue it's everywhere the the lobbies of buildings have christmas trees and nobody's saying you can't call it a christmas tree there might be some isolated moron yes every now and then it might be cloying to hear happy holidays but even on fox where you know there's you know you see the car commercials they're saying the holiday event they don't see the christmas event you don't hear rupert murdoch saying oh no no no we don't want your advertising dollars unless you say the word christmas that's an example of the hypocrisy and people probably need to tone it down a little bit why do you find it comical after you know that we have these these people they feel like they're so deeply religious and they act like christmas really is a deeply religious holiday for them we all know christmas isn't really jesus' birthday but i mean let's be honest it's america christmas is about presents way

when your son thinks of christmas does he think about jesus or is he thinking about what presents is going to get and every. every everybody every child has who is a christian thinks about jesus his birthday mean linus had to tell it to charlie brown but again you know it's almost a buyer for kid holiday people think about the gift giving the joy the lights even people who aren't christians i mean that's part of our secular culture but you know the courts in america have done that to basically separate the religious from the the cultural but i mean everybody who thinks about christmas and say is a christian is going to think about jesus christ but everybody regardless of whether they're christian or not is going to think about christian christmas secularly because it's about the gift giving it's about the christmas trees it's about rudolph the red nosed reindeer it's about frosty the snowman it has become its own self fulfilling prophecy we're billions upon billions of dollars are

exchanged even people who are unemployed are thinking about christmas whether they're christians or not i mean it's the time of the season so i think if you're a christian yes you think about jesus children think about jesus everybody thinks about jesus if they're they are a christian but there is a christmas identity a part of that and media outlets use that to to to you know basically sell product during the season i mean if they didn't then see everybody from c.n.n. to fox to the washington post would go out of business yeah well not so that's something the media is the lead toward whether you're a child thinking about what's going to happen on saturday morning or you're the c.e.o. not too far from here of you know corporation thinking about what's going to be my bottom line year in ghana saying not in not to mention the media use that as an excuse not to talk about the real wars this country is fighting we just ask that there's a war on christmas chris thanks so much for joining us. thank you it had

screaming about us forgetting christmas are kind of adding to the noise than and forgetting about jesus too well you know if what you want is high then ok we can get that i mean everyone should have their time you know i mean you know when the muslims have it's time to do something and you know. black americans have. and jewish people have their day and you know christian should be the same way but i but i think the religious aspect is becoming more and more foreign to the holiday itself we're all from different backgrounds so we have to honor the muslim faith and all the other faiths that are out there and just be one big happy family will be happy country is not really what it should be about this to be that's really what's christmas should be about it should be about loving by neighbor or whatever the neighbor wants to celebrate peace happiness joy and i want to wish you happy holiday all of you out there happy holiday season whether or not
