reduce the country's budget deficit even top pentagon officials acknowledge it as the country's most potent problem the biggest threat we have to our national security as are the federal government's debt now stands at thirteen point eight trillion dollars and it's projected to hit twenty trillion by the end of the coming decade we're not going to cut the budget half. the country's military budget now seven hundred twenty five billion dollars a price tag of epic and historic proportions the largest since world war two. it includes one hundred fifty nine billion dollars for america's wars in iraq and afghanistan the reality is this is what america does neil cons like robert kagan who urged war with iraq long before nine eleven helps keep this reality alive by equating military might to global leadership and world domination we intervene in

grenada nine hundred eighty three panama ninety nine iraq nine hundred ninety one somalia nine hundred ninety two haiti nine hundred ninety four bosnia one thousand nine hundred five cost of zero nine hundred ninety nine afghanistan two thousand and one in iraq two thousand and three. the united states spends nearly as much on military hardware fixtures and training as all other countries combined we see at a time when there's twenty five to thirty million people who are unemployed or underemployed where forty seven million americans can't go to a doctor when they're sick there's limitless funds limitless resources for the war budget the military budget is hardly ever questioned that town that is dominated by its industrial complex. advertisements lined the metro. commercials showcase the latest hardware and politicians cave into the lobbying campaigns and you can see it by the budget figures that the united states is in
12:06 am
fact a warfare state it's addicted to militarism its addicted to war spending and its addicted to war profits this is where the war profiteers are headquartered tearing over the pentagon this place is known as contractors row and it's from this clear point we see the revolving door through which employees from the defense contracting enterprise one job to the government and likewise a significant number of officials in the government the pentagon and the cia fly into jobs in the military industrial complex despite this military contractors spend close to thirty five million dollars lobbying congress according to the congressional research service defense contractors also dish out substantial amounts of money for campaign contributions in election years meanwhile a congressional watchdog group found in two thousand and eight over one hundred fifty members of congress had one hundred ninety six million dollars collectively invested in defense contractors and so as lawmakers scream louder too we need to

cut spending and federal spending for education health care and social services has been reduced cutting the military budget which makes up over twenty percent of the federal budget is not on washington's agenda jan hottest r. t. washington d.c. . the us government has spent more than eighty billion dollars on intelligence this year and that's three times more than the last figure it disclosed twelve years ago john young founder of whistleblowing website cryptome dot org says the american government trains those who leaked the information so they can justify spending billions on intelligence. there are schools to train people like bradley manning are doing just that on the internet it's at fort huachuca this is one of their training syllabuses that we publish as they. actually teach young people how to run the sting operations by leaking information to test the system build something called a team should be teams that do combat on the internet but leaking the stuff they part hackers to do that hackers in fact are

a favorite employees now of such groups no one knows more more conspiracy theory than spies do national security out of bravo's conspiracy theories all the time but they put out the story that is just conspiracy theory as always contemptible but in fact they're the ones who cook up the threads that are far more complex and bizarre than anything we ordinary people could ever cook up and they get billions to fight it i. would add if you watch the full interview in around twenty minutes time here on our team. now let's go back to our top story a moscow court is still to sentence for oil tycoon me harder kosky african victim him of embezzling meant we can all cross live tell a corresponding kind of of the following the case for us here in moscow and tell you the reading of the verdict is answering its third day now so is the judge any closer to giving the sentence. there is nothing unusual about the fact that it's taking so long to reach the verdict this is the way russian judicial system works
12:09 am
first the person is either found guilty or not guilty and then the judge goes into the details of the birth and in this case those three hundred they just were paperwork on the case of money laundering. i hope that of course the former business partner but then they do so it could still be a warlock sunday was found guilty of flops evasion leading the wording to new leads to still going to have to worry to some more thought it looks like more to find out what the sentence will be simply slightly better what. will this guy see or by my word that would. the court concluded that mikhail had that of course blood on the liberty of planned and carried out a complicated scheme of embezzling oil and money through dealings with three smaller subsidiaries of ucas some i don't have to guess you guns give to gas and all oil extracting companies each was forced into
12:10 am
a deal that was highly unprofitable for them but extremely profitable for you can they result thirty billion dollars worth of oil still and by that of course. through ucas here's how it worked the oil was bought from the companies that are nominal price set by ucas it was then sold at the same level to offshore trading companies secretly owned by her that skin liberty of when it was then resold at market price they pocketed the difference six billion dollars was moved offshore three times alone. so basically that all means that the prosecution claims that we got of course kennedy's former business partner plus the. still trying to seven billion u.s. dollars worth of oil. while the time to cost his case has triggered strong reaction both abroad and within russia so tell us more about that. will you there has been rather critical reaction to this from the west germany has said
12:11 am
that this verdict is a step back in the within the zation off russia washington has said that this case actually see really worsens the situation with human rights in the country with russia ignores all those problems as it claims that it is a domestic cases and domestic issue that has to be solved with the within the borders over the country and it's only russia's you show system that has to be involved in this russian foreign ministry has also expressed their concerns about the comments coming and criticism coming from the west saying that this should stay in russia. this issue rests with them over the british rule system of the russian federation. any of them exert pressure upon the floor or an acceptable. in his recent interview we would have still believe the russian t.v.

channels the russian pros the person on this court that nobody has the roy beginning to feel. worse over the course. meanwhile over there both these defense does not agree with the verdict they're saying that they are prepared to appeal to the russian president after the reading of the verdict is finished and if what it takes to prove a point is to appeal to the european court of human rights that they're also prepared to do so meanwhile here in central most of the outside the court yard where the verdict is being read will be free all the latest details and of course as soon as the sentence is announced it we will in for absolutely tie thanks very much indeed for the subject. and still have for us our here in our siberian military might the russian team takes the land of the cossacks to test the bravery of the marshall man. and an investigation is

12:16 am
they say the shady deal was so blatant it looked as if the former mayor took the money from the city budget wrapped it up for christmas christmas for it from his office and presented it to his wife in full view of the vote and. the price paid for the land also raises questions seven million dollars perhaps or of land on moscow's outskirts is astronomic experts say and there is no sign of any construction taking place all of these paths to the bad smell left behind by the former mayors acrimonious exit. will of the months instead of promoting himself and playing political games should have worked the city has a huge number of problems corruption is going through the roof and this is unheard of it's impossible to get anywhere through third competition who gets all the work contracts and tenders who is always one until recently as the mayor of moscow used

meal where he tells us about the history the cossacks originally came from lamb's far to the west of here but they proved a useful militia force conquering and securing siberia for the czars in return for grants of land. the idea was to create villages along the country's border so that people are bound to the land they're living on. the cossacks strong independent traditions were disliked by the communists they were suppressed and marginalized since the end of the soviet union they've been trying to rebuild their self-sufficient way of life especially when it comes to resisting the bad habits of the city. it's no easy matter living in the country of course but on the other hand we're protected from the harm of the city from drugs alcohol smoking would go. but tonight at least the elders of the village were allowing themselves a few liberties. with me to talk more about life in the siberian villages is alex

jude you've been here for a while now in russia and in arms and you've also told outside the big city so how would you compare life within the cities of russia and outside them. well i'd say the obs is quite a lot more provincial than. before. in the u.k. i'm from us a small town in the north of england so i'm used to the small town life but i've also been to two villages around on the skin in the region people though are much more down to earth they're tied to the landlord and have a lot most if not farm to keep animals their. fees lot more healthy than what we have in the big cities and supermarkets and so on it's all locally grown except say tea coffee and sugar. and i guess you could say the lifestyle is healthier except boyishly the drinking is the stereotype also people do that it just as they haven't got much else to do. but i say the people there are a lot closer to each other and they got close to close knit communities because
12:25 am
they rely on each other a lot more than say in a bigger city. ok so you've described a more close to lifestyle family values are going to great connection to where they're wrong how would you say that that helps people there to survive the greatest challenge that there is which is the ferocious russian winter i so that song which is current of all console russian culture in general. like the west where who are much more individualized take care take care of themselves i'd say that people here in russia and especially in the russian villages have to have to look out for each other just because you can't rely on number one all the time. and if there's something which which you are lacking. the material in terms of family care like child care and so on are the first people you'll turn to russia will be your family and your friends and neighbors and so on so something essential and so that's been a sea oil tactic in russia from the leave for the coming this time and ensuring the

country time differently so that's something which continues in prevails today. a view there from someone outside russia seeing life in the russian verges and it seems that those close knit ties and strong family values are enough to get people through even the worst of the russian weapons. the breeze up today here in our own time now for some business years with us don't go away. hello and a very warm welcome time to see what's going on in the world of business where the slow recovery in foreign investment russian banks have been helping business out here they increase the volume of lending to nonfinancial enterprises by ten percent to around thirty six billion dollars the average interest rate for long term loans
