12:33 am
one of five ships stranded in the frozen sea rushes follows coast between the waters. us finds that paying afghan when the show is to hold back taliban influence is not enough to buy their loyalty. as the u.s. ignores tera claims against iran it's put on trial for only minor charges or teen out in the spotlight on what barack handles people which it thinks are extremists. today i'm talking to courtney bush she's a paralegal for the human rights organization reprieve she looks into people detained in guantanamo bay and other cia detention facilities i'm talking to her on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the printing of guantanamo bay called me bush thanks very much for talking to us now you've recently come back from
12:34 am
guantanamo bay tell me a bit about what you saw there what the conditions were like unfortunately we no longer meet the prisoners in the camps so we don't see the conditions in the camps any longer what we do is meet them in a separate. holding camp whereby were brought in the detainees are brought in separately and we meet in trailers. so what we know is what we hear from the men of what the conditions are like. unfortunately there is a lot of building work going on in guantanamo right now which leads us to believe that it's nowhere near closing as obama would have promised back in two thousand and nine when he took office which is unfortunate but. the men say that everything has improved conditions have definitely improved since two thousand and five which was probably the worst year for the men there and what reason are you given for not being able to go inside the rules change every time you go to guantanamo every time we go there's a new
12:35 am
a new rule that we have to abide by or remeet them differently in different locations so while lawyers were previously meeting with their clients in the camps we were not told of a direct reason why but apparently this makes it easier to transport the men it makes it safer. they don't give us direct reasons i'm not someone who's interested in the prisons about prisoners' rights in general how do you feel about not being able to see the conditions in which they're living and you always want to see what your president or what your client is is subjected to so it's. it's very hard not to see i witness what they're going through they do tell us. again it's always nice to know for sure that there's no degree of exaggeration to what they're saying and that you can say with confidence what they're what they're it's objected to a lot of the details that we've heard about the treatment that terror suspects have been subjected to england have been truly shocking i'm told that waterboarding and other forms of torture have you met people who was subjected to these forms of
12:36 am
interrogation absolutely these these methods of interrogation the enhanced interrogation techniques as they're so referred are not are not the did not happen to the minority they happen to the majority so what happens is you get instructors who are interrogators and in the guards who are trained in these techniques that are actually used in military training. to help army men and women in resist interrogation being used on these men in guantanamo bay so the majority of our clients have had at least one of these techniques used on them. or legalities saw it rarely. what do we know about the effectiveness of the reliability of the information that's of taint under torture. well we know about you can't rely on this information you can almost get
12:37 am
a person say almost anything you want them to if you're torturing them and having them await forty eight hours seventy two hours. we know this from men and women who have undergone this training in the army we know this from men and men who have been held in p.o.w. camps in communist countries and say the vietnam war. you will say almost anything under torture just to have the torture and what does reprise make of these methods of interrogation from a legal perspective well they're illegal under the geneva conventions the geneva conventions afford you prisoners of war the right to be treated humanely and without degradation these treatments obviously do not do not. stand up to this standard of treatment. it is illegal but unfortunately in two thousand and two after the prison first opened george bush declared that these men were not prisoners of war they were enemy combatants and therefore did not fall
12:38 am
under the geneva conventions we still hold that this is a legal and if it's not illegal it's completely immoral anyways what's morale like among the prisoners that you've met recently the men who are still there are obviously tired they're depressed they're withdrawn we try to give them as many updates as possible about men who have been released. but sometimes it's only serves to make them realize what they're missing a lot of the men feel that their lives are passing them by while they're stuck in this prison but at the same time do not want to return back to their home countries because they're they fear prot persecution or torture so they are kind of in this this limbo where they don't want to go home but they don't want to be in want on him only more they've spent eight. nine long years there that's their life and so it's just passing them by the one hundred seventy three prisoners left in
12:39 am
guantanamo bay what are the stories give me some examples of what some of the most opposed to. a lot of them are ridiculous charges so a lot of our clients are facing a charge that is listed on their combatant status review tribunals in their administrative review boards as as for instance running away from the incoming northern alliance well that's because the northern alliance is bombing the cities they're in so obviously they're running away from the bombings in the conflict that of course is now being held against them as a charge and holding that up to say that they're terrorists. you have people who have lost their passports or are on forged passports for asylum reasons . and this is being held as as proof as they're terrorists so it's a lot of different charges you have associations which in in law is not supposed to convict you is not
12:40 am
a sign of guilt but it is in their cases what's the purpose of your work there and do you feel that you are able to sort of progress towards your goal to make a difference our goal is obviously to find a safe home for every man and get them released from guantanamo unfortunately we keep it we keep putting walls for instance. we've we've always held that people who won their hadiths cases about is people who have been declared by the courts that they've been held illegally that they would not be returned forcibly repatriated to countries that will persecutor torture them that they have a better chance of being resettled in a third country that will offer them a good new home unfortunately on thursday a far far he who is a winner was just forcibly repatriated to algeria so that's just another instance of a row. bloc that we continuously run up against closing guantanamo within a year was one of president obama's campaign promises to years of now paused and
12:41 am
it's still open why was this promise broken and can you see any signs of him making good on it is. the reason it was broken is political. obama to congress and. nobody you wanted. is brought to the states so there was the idea of opening a supermax prison in illinois that went for not part of the problem is that european countries are sick and tired of giving these men homes in the united states has done nothing to offer them the home considering that the united states is the ones who made the problem so obama's kind of ran into this problem where by the congress and the american people it by large do not want to get mowed detainees brought into the united states but without that he's got nothing to do.
12:42 am
as for the future of guantanamo it's looking less and less likely that it will be closed any time in the future. on thursday he signed a he signed the national defense authorization act which is for the fiscal year of two thousand and eleven which made it harder for detainees to prove brought to the united states for civil or for criminal cases and that's just another roadblock in his closing the camp it is a tricky issue there isn't it because a lot of these prisoners have literally nowhere else to go they fear of persecution if they're sent to their home countries and the country is on willing to welcome them is that an issue that's moving forwards or backwards it's going backwards unfortunately. a lot of the men do fear persecution and torture in their in their home countries. out of the european countries have offered homes to at least one of the men usually many more so they feel like they've done their part it is
12:43 am
a costly procedure to bring men to and to a new country and get them settled and give them language classes. without the united states doing so the european countries have decided that i have come to the realization that they have to be or all the responsibility the same national defense authorization act signed on thursday has made it that much harder to resettle. resettle men in their countries because it made the loops much smaller to jump through for the for the government to send them to different countries we talk a lot about closing guantanamo but at the same time it is at least a detention facility that we know about isn't there a fear that if it was closed detention secret detention would just go underground and that is a worry but that is a worry whether or not one tunnel remains open. united states has used underground prisons for years and we know of these. to transfer men to and from before they go
12:44 am
to guantanamo they're held in secret prisons. or only just finding out about some of these prisons and facts that were used years and years ago. and the united states of course is changing its its m.o. in secret detention it's doing proxy detention instead of instead of secret detention so you're always going to run into that whether or not kuantan a mole is open and we've been hearing more and more reports of secret cia facilities in eastern europe do you do you know about that. there are ongoing investigations in many of the eastern europe countries for instance in lithuania last year there was a parliamentary inquiry which found that there were two secret prisons in the country. that held that the secret prisons were probably not used however there is now a prosecutor prosecutorial in. that is still ongoing it started last year and it's still in the process in lithuania. we know of some secret prisons in poland so
12:45 am
there are definitely there has definitely been the use of secret prisons in eastern europe it is a current issue we're still investigating it we're working with the inquiries were doing our own investigations were doing our own litigation to to crack that open and find out the truth thank you very much thank you. we'll. bring you the latest in science and technology from around the world.

however michael vick's amazing year is over the fence paved the way for the green bay packers in philadelphia early in the game here the eagles offense completely and seeing while the packers opened up the two possession late our knowledge is escaping from the pocket and finding james jones in the end saying to make it fourteen zero and it's right there in the truck in for chad just managed to field goal before the break we came up with a different mindset for the second half i think dr dick a twenty four yard touchdown to jason to make the four point gain i the practice however i might the scoring cost of brandon jackson the remaining seventy yards the end zone to take the thing back to the trade center. the eagles have put off or keep coming back through the course of the season and they were close to the other one there is it takes it because it's just too far right and they got the full back with enough chance of winning but that's by me she's crying both prosecute the. intersection of the gang but it was just so i think the fact is on trial next up

to go through and. through. our margins are. good. friends. so you are. now finished with football of sorts where russia is one of the leading nations in beach soccer that's the name the game the country's largely cold climate hasn't stopped the russians from advancing in this sport is running costs are half reports . it started as a pastime when the sands of brazil's beautiful coastline but now beach soccer will the shell case to the world and that's when to sixteen summer olympics in rio de janeiro brazil is are naturally the kings of this sport but russians are not too far behind and there isn't a full bore russia has been actively involved in beach soccer since one thousand nine hundred five so we called some point early and have the time to train players

that could be competitive in european under global events and we began with building the infrastructure that's why beach football is one of the sports to to live russia to rank high in european and world competitions maxime is the president of f.c. city from st petersburg a club that's unique to russia in a few ways in terms of beach soccer they were the first ones to create a ladies' practice group along with a reserve squad for now the team success has been mostly local but it has plans to make it to the top nationally and internationally as well it's nice to have the we made a thorough selection and fields new players who showed promise all the banks are performing as a result of a new team and one missing petersburg championship we decided to transform ourselves into a serious speech soccer club that the russian national team has become one of the sports powerhouses international tournaments in the country attract huge crowds in the summer but the long winter in most sports limits players and fans to just

a few warm months per year it's helped the national team's global success could result in a surge in popularity of this and another fun version of football throughout russia by can you have we have proper infrastructure and with good stadiums it's not easy to stage a compander to attract fans but when it's done we'll have the pleasure of seeing the stands filled to capacity in brazil for example forty five thousand people may attend a league match and up to twelve to fourteen thousand when it's a national team match it's a show of prominent celebration something for us to learn from. well it's the city continues to learn and could probably teach their skills to others take a look at what it could be missing at your next beach soccer event.

he didn't like. even though advancement of beach football is far from ideal in russia the country's national team it's constantly ranked in europe's top three in two thousand and nine the team even became a euro the champions that's something the country's irregular national squad led by andre out of shoving and kompany could probably learn from rome on coffer of argentine st petersburg that is always spoke of fernando whether he's coming out. hungry for the full story we've got. the biggest issues get
