12:34 pm
today i'm talking to courtney bush she's a paralegal for the human rights organization reprieve she looks into people detained in guantanamo bay and other cia detention facilities i'm talking to her on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the printing of guantanamo bay bush thanks very much for talking to us now you've recently come back from guantanamo bay tell me a bit about what you saw there what the conditions were like unfortunately we no longer meet the prisoners in the camps so we don't see the conditions in the camps any longer what we do is meet them in a separate. holding camp whereby were brought in the detainees are brought in separately and mainly in trailers. so what we know is what we hear from them and what the conditions are like. unfortunately there is a lot of building work is going on in guantanamo right now which leads us to believe that it's nowhere near closing as obama would have promised back in two
12:35 pm
thousand and nine when he took office the fortunate. the men say that everything has improved conditions have definitely improved since two thousand and five which was probably the worst year for the men there and what reason are you given for not being able to go inside the column the rules change every time you go to guantanamo every time we go there's a new a new rule that we have to abide by or remeet them differently in different locations so while lawyers were previously meeting with their clients in the camps we were not told of a direct reason why but apparently this makes it easier to transport the men it makes it safer. they don't give us direct reasons imo someone who's interested in the prisons about prisoners' rights in general how do you feel about not being able to see the conditions in which they're living you always want to see what your president or what your client is is subjected to so it's. it's very hard not to see i witness what they're going through they do tell us. again it's always nice to
12:36 pm
know for sure that there is no degree of exaggeration to what they're saying and that you can say with confidence what they're what they're it's objected to a lot of the details that we've heard about the treatment that terror suspects have been subjected to in guantanamo bay has been truly shocking i'm told that waterboarding and other forms of talk have you met people who was subjected to these forms of interrogation absolutely these these methods of interrogation the enhanced interrogation techniques as they're so referred are not are not the did not happen to the minority they happen to the majority so what happens is you get instructors who are interrogators and guards for the training that in these techniques that are actually used in military training. to help army men and women resist interrogation being used on these men in guantanamo bay so the majority of our clients have have had at least one of these
12:37 pm
techniques used on them and legality is so. what do we know about the effectiveness of the reliability of the information that. well we know about you can't rely on this information you can almost get a person say almost anything you want them to do this you're torturing them and having a wait forty eight hours seventy two hours. we know this from men and women who have undergone this training in the army we know this from men and men who have been held in camps in communist countries and say the vietnam war. you will say almost anything under torture just to have the torture and what does reprise make of these methods of interrogation from a legal perspective while they're illegal under the geneva conventions the geneva conventions afford prisoners of war the right to be treated humanely and without
12:38 pm
degradation. these treatments obviously do not do not. stand up to this standard of treatment. it is illegal but unfortunately in two thousand and two after the prison first opened george bush declared that these men were not prisoners of war they were enemy combatants and therefore did not fall under the geneva conventions we still hold that this is a legal and if it's not illegal it's completely immoral anyways what's morale like among the prisoners that you've met recently the men who are still there are obviously tired they're depressed they're withdrawn. we try to give them as many updates as possible about men who have been released. but sometimes it's only serves to make them realize what they're missing a lot of the men feel that their lives are passing them by while they're stuck in this prison but at the same time do not want to return back to their home country
12:39 pm
because there's a persecution or so they are kind of in. this limbo where they don't want to go home but they don't want to be in want tom only more they've spent eight. nine long years there that's their life and so it's just passing them by their one hundred seventy three prisoners left in guantanamo bay what are the stories give me some examples of what some of the most opposed to. a lot of them are ridiculous charges so a lot of our clients are facing a charge that's listed on their combatant status review tribunals in their administrative review boards as as for instance running away from. the incoming northern alliance well that's because the northern alliance is bombing the cities they're in so obviously they're running away from the bombings and the conflict that of course is now being held against them as a charge and holding that up to say that they're terrorists. you have
12:40 pm
people who have lost their passports or are on forged passports for asylum reasons . and this is being held as as proof as they're terrorists so it's a lot of different charges you have associations which in in laws not supposed to convict you is not a sign of guilt but it is in their cases what's the purpose of your work there and do you feel that you are able to sort of progress towards your goal to make a difference our goal is obviously to find a safe home for every man and get them released from guantanamo. unfortunately we keep it we keep hitting walls for instance. we've we've always held that people who won their hadiths cases that is people who have been declared by the courts that they've been held illegally that they would not be returned forcibly retreated to countries that will persecuted torture them that they have a better chance of being resettled in a third country that will offer them
12:41 pm
a good new home unfortunately on thursday a far far he who is a devious winner was just forcibly repatriated to algeria so that's just another instance of a roadblock that we continuously run up against closing guantanamo within a year it was one of president obama's campaign promises two years it's now paused and it's still open why was this promise broken and can you see any signs of him making good on it. the reason it was broken is political. obama to congress and. nobody wanted. is brought to the states so there was the idea of opening a supermax prison in illinois that went for not part of the problem is that european countries are sick and tired of giving these men homes in the united
12:42 pm
states has done nothing to offer them. considering that the united states is the ones who made the problem so obama's kind of run into this problem where by. the congress and the american people by and large do not want to get mowed detainees brought into the united states but without that he's got nothing to do. as for the future of guantanamo it's looking less and less likely that it will be close in time in the future. on thursday he signed a he signed the national defense authorization act which is for the fiscal year two thousand and eleven which made it harder for detainees to group brought to the united states for civil order for criminal cases and that's just another roadblock in his closing the camp it is a tricky issue there isn't it because a lot of these prisoners have literally nowhere else to go they fear of persecution if they're sent their home countries and any country is on willing to welcome them
12:43 pm
is that an issue that's moving forwards or backwards it's going backwards unfortunately. a lot of the men do fear persecution and torture in their in their home countries a lot of the european countries have offered homes to at least one of the men usually many more so they feel like they've done their part it is a costly proceed here to bring men to and to a new country get them settled and give them language classes. without the united states doing so the european countries have decided that there have come to the realization that they have to be are all their responsibility the same national defense authorization act signed on thursday has made it. that much harder to resettle. resettle men in their countries because it made the loops much smaller to jump through for the for the government to send them to different countries we talk a lot about closing guantanamo but at the same time it is at least a detention facility that we know about isn't there
12:44 pm
a fear that if it was closed detention secret detention would just go underground that is a worry but that is a worry whether or not one tunnel remains open. united states has used underground prisons for years and we know of these. to transfer men to and from before they go to guantanamo they're held in secret prisons. or only just finding out about some of these prisons in fact that were used years and years ago. in the united states of course is changing it's it's m.-o. in secret detention it's doing proxy detention. instead of secret detention so you're always going to run into that whether or not kuantan a mode is open and we've been hearing more and more reports of secret cia facilities in europe do you know about that. there are ongoing investigations in many of the eastern europe countries for instance in lithuania last year there was
12:45 pm
a parliamentary inquiry which found that there were two secret prisons in the country. that held that the secret prisons were probably not used however there is now a prosecutor prosecutorial inquiry that is still ongoing it started last year and it's still in the process in lithuania. we know of some secret prisons in poland so there are definitely there has definitely been the use of secret prisons. it is a current issue we're still investigating it we're working with the inquiries were doing our own investigations were doing our own litigation to crack that open and find out the truth. thank you very much thank you. for the full story we've got. the biggest issues get

russia doesn't have much to boast about as far as taekwondo at the olympics are concerned i want to ask you about your plans for twenty years well but how is your team feeling head of the london games. we were very good to fight twenty two and was a very successful year for. our men's team won gold at the european cup instant petersburg and silver in the mixed event we haven't performed that well in a long time the youth olympics in singapore brought us one silver and one gold medal we want to gold and silver medal of december's world tour in moscow that's a great result we're already for twenty twelve. on a global level how hard do you think it would be for our fighters to stay in the maximum number of qualifying licenses for that's one to twelve olympics yet. i think we can get all four but our ultimate and immediate goal i think we'll collect all four. that would be great said the olympics are drawing closer and say you were

appointed to this position a fairly recently even though you have been involved with taekwondo for a long time what will your role be in the preparation for the games is this system created before you came need improving. of the system is constantly improving but the foundations have been laid we have great athletes and coaches but our work is in progress we constantly amend our training routines and competition shared tools at the same time we're making sure our athletes are on display i would even say we're making sure the world is afraid of our athletes it's important that our athletes are well known to boost their confidence is by. any say a few words about how taekwondo is developing in russia is that more popular in some regions that in others and has a promoted. you know shooting your yes of course some regions are better than others looking back at the last championship i would say those regions moscow and st petersburg naturally pakistan north or setia the urals chelyabinsk. is quite

popular nationwide really good so is it time for the union to start thinking about tracking the next generation is the sport popular among children and are there enough staff to train them. on marsalis is the thought and it's pretty popular probably not yet being talked about by everyone there. for interviews with t.v. reporters the most important because they introduce taekwondo not just to children but rather to their parents taekwondo not only prepares a sportsman she was a personality and a citizen i believe media exposure will help make this sport even more popular i think what can you say about the health of erath leads maybe some are weedy when they start doing sports and say you make them stronger what are the health levels like compared to say ten years ago. but different people get into this kind of sport and one of our time asks it's a make a person who's not physically strong enough into an athlete you may have noticed the taekwondo develops a person comprehensively which means not just raising healthy athlete but healthy
12:57 pm
people in general we've obviously seen certain progress in this area over the past ten years not least of all because of the growth of taekwondo popularity and to increasing skills among our coaches and other specialists but what's the role of fans in the generals the poor in the stands and how important are they just as is the case for every sports fan is the second most important person after the athlete you want if you found supported by screaming and waving flags it helps a great deal i can't say things are very bright though we try to solve this by issuing free tickets to our events and invite children from sports academies this is for example we had full stadiums of the latest world cup and the fans were mostly children which is extremely pleasant thank you very much for your time mr president and we wish you good luck in the nearest future and twentieth world lympics this was the presence of the russian.
