at domodedovo airport and the impact it's having on the russian capital and indeed the global impact this is having because after all this is a major international airport it's moscow's largest with twenty two million passengers a year seventy seven airlines use this airport both russian of course and foreign and many european flights would be coming in at that time the airport itself is twenty two kilometers southeast of moscow making the situation more difficult for the emergency services because the bomb went off at the rush hour time moscow's notorious for its traffic in the city and about all accounts the emergency services have managed to cope very well with the road traffic conditions and managed to get . the injured to the hospitals to be treated vladimir putin has announced that they will provide the government will provide financial help to all those affected we're getting reaction analysis from around the world and indeed we're getting reports from our correspondent normally at domodedovo airport but other airports and transportation hubs around the city center now peter power he's a u.k.
1:31 pm
based crisis management specialist from visa consultants he told me a little earlier that keeping things moving following a terrorist attack is essential. the first thing to realize that it won't be just moscow airport where tightening up you are twenty million passengers flying through that airport which actually is a lot less heathrow but nonetheless it's a major part of the world but other question i've already heard in the last few minutes is was that the real target could something have happened here with a bomb exploded on route to somewhere else for example if a bomb detonated in an area in very very near any airport you're going to show it to a wider area it could be detonated by a mobile phone providing it's at low level so there's a chance that the target might have been somewhere else this is the first attack in moscow since march of last year. two female suicide bombers blew themselves up and if you go back to two thousand and four. again two female suicide bombers which is
1:32 pm
almost unique blew up an aircraft in the air to separate aircraft through a photo. of a head of security that you actually detain women but then let them on so light think that the security is being tightened he said believe me right now all major airports around the world are looking into this and asking themselves these sorts of questions it's not just moscow one of the questions you're going to ask is well who are the perpetrators mean all these events go into three stages there's always a sort of mayhem and then as a mastermind and as a manhunt the mayhem is where we are now the dust is hardly circled could it be juco you know who's already talked about bringing threats of terrorism to the streets of russia he is probably going to be the number one suspect here but it's too early to point the blame when now to what's happening now i'm sure as it will be in any country is gathering the evidence and finding out where is a cause and most importantly could something happen in the next hour the next day
1:33 pm
the next week this is the beginning of a campaign and so far as far as i'm aware we haven't got anybody admit to the crime one of the rules with dealing with terrorism in the twenty first century is not to stop everything if you can possibly keep things going it is a judgment of moscow airport that they can allow some flights well that's their call you have to remember that terrorism doesn't actually were lie on the bank they were lies on the fear of the bank and so yes we've got a kick the shit catastrophe and by the sound of it many deaths today which is a tragedy but overall actually you are probably a lot more likely to be hit by lightning than ever be to be killed by a terrorist bomb it is just the random nature of terrorism so if we can carry on business as usual as quick as we can so much the better i mean there are companies all around the world like take for example one in the u.k. called the anvil company who actually followed that line through satellite navigation around russia and so on and they're busily now trying to give them advice. they go to the airport over there they stay behind and so on that's my
1:34 pm
point about a lot of people affected beyond this but the issue is gather that intelligence as most important make sure your security is good is it reason we can be and remember we're talking about weapons of mass effect here not weapons of mass destruction so we still don't know who did it whether it's an affiliate of al qaeda we simply don't know yet. peter power talking to be a little earlier from the u.k. will security has been increased in all of the capitals at ports in response to what has happened. and artie's. business and. security where you are no noticeable. it absolutely is yes you can see that they've increased on the ground in the airport taking going through the check in and having your luggage checked that's taking a lot longer now as a measure of being you've also seen patrol staff around the airport grounds with
1:35 pm
dogs so it is noticeable you can see we've spoken to the security staff and they said that they've got the highest security level in place all the stuff on high alert they've been extra vigilant checking the luggage and they've got people monitoring the c.c.t.v. extremely closely that's obviously monitored usually anyway. but it's actually placed with the. top of the domodedovo and we've been speaking to people on the ground in the airport trying to get a feel there's certainly no panic at the moment but people who are traveling today extremely anxious about what's happening i wanting to know as much information as possible certainly about their safety in the circles as well the impact very we understand that despite planes still leaving and arriving at domodedovo there are indeed planes being diverted to the tippett so what's the impact there on they'd be able to cope with that extra capacity. we had shown much of that today saying that they were ready to take the extra flights are they going to be diverted from dover
1:36 pm
dative or no it's actually spoken with press service just a little while ago though what they told us was that actually there weren't that many flights diverted to share much of those about a thirty minute gap when flights were restricted from coming into domodedovo airport and that's actually now according to show that the president has been listed so the for. flights are returning to normal at the in the dead of a kid they said that was they will find something new can ever see some of these diverted flights as well as st petersburg airports and you know of course to the people who were expecting to land in most gate today and now landing quite far out of the city and they'll be looking not to face the four hour train ride they've got the high rolling this cool some destruction chair match but as we said ready to take on the extra capacity the extra people if necessary but what we're hearing at the moment is it looks like they start to flies perhaps wait be necessary and he will. tell us what's the atmosphere there amongst passengers there because
1:37 pm
clearly the capitol is in a state of alert can you sense any nervousness tension there or almost people like we saw over a year ago after the most here metro bombings getting on with life as usual what is the situation there the feeling. of people understandably nervous anxious when they hear this nice they actually start from the ground have done a really great job every assuring people as best they can and keeping them as informed as they possibly can of what's going on and we actually think that some of the people in the apple some of them knew what was happening some of them were just finding out as we were talking to the so we could hear some of their reactions and . the most important thing is people safety i'm a little scared but there's nothing i can do have to go in there there's no other way home. you know what happened when we have been i really want to
1:38 pm
know what happened and they want to talk to my parents now because i think they're very worried now bert i don't they keep going to change. coming to school. i was supposed to fly from should me to go but no i'm leaving from goma did or airport i'm not scared here and i don't have any other troops. what has been interesting to note in the comparison as well to the following last year was the real resilience of people they're not going to be terrorized by these people by these attacks they're getting on with things as best as they can is he said the stuff that we try to keep things running is effectively and smoothly and emphasizing that the main priority at the moment is continuing to ensure that they've got every measure in place to ensure the safety of the passengers coming in and out of these sort of reporting there from moscow's sheremetyevo airport thanks very much indeed for that update.
1:39 pm
we're going to reports that an italian and a french person have been caught up in this incident they have been reported to be among the casualties so far thirty five have been confirmed dead and one hundred thirty have been injured we're bringing you the latest developments our breaking news story here at live from the russian capital now at least sixty people have been taken to hospitals across the russian capital many of them are in a critical condition and. is outside one of those hospitals and joins me now so. presumably that hospital way at the moment is one of many casualties still arriving . well not at the moment we did see some. arriving just
1:40 pm
some time ago but this is still changing the figures are still changing. at least sixty people have been hospitalized to hospitals and medical clinics across moscow including these. advanced hospitals in the city some of the. two hospitals in the moscow region but we've also heard that they may be transferred to. federal hospitals in the city also out of these. around sixty people which have been hospitalized at least twenty five of them are reported to be in critical condition the doctors are really working to help them but apart from physical assistance there's also psychological help because this was definitely a shock to hundreds of people not only to those who actually witnessed this explosion everybody who was at the airport. at that time were also also getting
1:41 pm
reports that some of the the killed in this blast were foreign citizens reporting the french a british. citizen and their bodies are going to be sent back home as soon as on tuesday also another point is that this blast happened at half past four pm which means that the ambulances really got into the beginning of the evening rush hour in moscow and police escorted these ambulances to hospitals to be able to get these injured to medical help as soon as possible the situation is still developing of course we will be monitoring on how it's going and from what you're seeing so far no you only have one of the hospitals. is it generally regarded that the emergency services responded quickly on time and efficiently. yes from the at the moment the media is feel filled with reports from eyewitnesses who are in the
1:42 pm
airport at the time either meeting their relatives or actually arriving and everybody says the faster the ambulances stream really quickly and were able to deliver the injured to medical help partially this was because of this the police assistance assistance to show i told you about police corps just this quarter these ambulances. moscow traffic jam which is as you probably know is one of the most difficult ones in the world it's quite difficult to get these people quickly to hospitals and nevertheless according to the reports from witnesses this everything was done on time there was no panic even though some of these witnesses they do say they do describe some quite disturbing pictures of the law and even body parts that many of them had to witness well and then talk here of just that you say that psychological help is on. way but is that clear to the people who've been caught up
1:43 pm
in all of this i mean if they haven't been physically hurt many may just by the go home or back to a hotel or whatever and be traumatized not aware that obviously there is some help now which the russian authorities have provided. absolutely this time these types of events they need cause psychological trauma as which may actually. turn up not only just on the after the first minute or first hour even on the first day or even the first several days some people may realize that they've been traumatized still week or even several weeks after the incident and stuff and to be authorities have opened hotlines to psychological hotlines for people just to call the professionals who may help them in this type of situation because like i said much more people than just who were in that area where this blast happened were affected and witnessed in this whole last hour reports of people who work in the airport on
1:44 pm
the totally opposite side of the building on a different floor and they see that the felt this explosion while being so far away so it me be that more people may actually help for me ask for help as time as time comes in just a day or two even several weeks to go thanks very much indeed that's our tease you know has been of reporting from outside one of moscow's hospitals. this is a lot to live here in moscow is just coming up to a quarter to ten in the evening here just to remind you a bomb has blown a suicide bomb a suspected suicide bomb has blown up in moscow's main airport coming out of at four thirty pm g.m.t. four thirty pm moscow time that's one thirty pm a g. and c.
1:45 pm
there's been international condemnation to this attack from the u.s. germany and france among others we understand that the french italian and possibly a british national have been caught up in this bomb blast we're now going to get more from. in washington now that we're learning that thirty five dead so far one hundred thirty been injured what kind of reaction have we been hearing from around the world. tarbell president obama's came down the blast they called it an outrageous act of terrorism and as the russian people we have a quiet also expressed condolences of course to the families of the victims we have a clip of the white house spokesperson robert gibbs for you take a listen. i strongly condemn the start regis act of terrorism against the russian people at the dome of you out of the airport i want to express the solidarity of the american people with the russian people in the aftermath of this premeditated attack against innocent civilians michelle and i
1:46 pm
offer our deepest condolences to the russian people who have suffered greatly the hands of terrorism we share your sorrow in a resolve to stand with you in our common fight against those who used terrorism for their political goals their thoughts are with the families of the victims and we are praying for a successful recovery for all those who were injured. you know many world leaders have done the same they express their condolences their solidarity we also have a statement from the nato secretary general who said he will shocked by this attack he says terrorism is a common threat in the international community has to fight it together you know all of the leaders are saying that and indeed it is it is a common thread if you think about it the attacked an international airport and those behind those that that attack clearly knew that they are not going to be only
1:47 pm
washington nationals involved and as you mentioned a british if you mention italian french nationals who are among those who got caught up in this in this incident in this tragic tragic terror attack all it's really shocking to most people here is this blast in context of the previous ones russia suffered from a succession of cool rain this terrorist attacks of the last year i know how there were in the moscow metro suicide bombings last march that was the attack on the passenger train a little little bit over a year ago also russia is really falling victim to terrorism on the basis and only recently has the united states and the west in general started to sort of knowledge that this is part of the international terrorism. and it's not just washes domestic issues or has been saying for years that there has to be a global effort to provide it it's not russia's responsibility although it is in many ways much more vulnerable to terrorism then so you other western states.
1:48 pm
the security was lapse so. this is an international problem is and fix fix the international community but what are security experts saying about the nature of this explosion the way it happened. well obviously this was clearly message a message that the monsters have said have tried to say security experts point out that they could be staging the attacks to raise funds from international terrorist networks to show that they can actually pull this off and in what shape it is not as difficult to pull it off was say in the united states and using suicide bombers they sort of make their message even more graphic russian security officials believe that terrorist groups operating in russia do get funding from brought some of the members are actually known to have been trained abroad so really to stop
1:49 pm
this there has to be an international effort not just finally we've seen obviously relations improving between washington we've had a message as you've already mentioned from the white house from president obama do you see this in some ways uniting the to. some ways this could help improve relations even further. it's really actually when you look at what the presidents have been saying for for the last couple of years the message. unit is sort of sort of being take gather in this fight against terror has been there for quite a while so so it's not like it's not going to start from now on they're going to take gather they have been. there with the nato russia actually cooperate with the international community to to fight against terrorism and to actually track those people down and to to find those who are very importantly fund
1:50 pm
terrorists who all believe so they have been in it together for for a quite some time it's not like they're going to start now they're gone i will leave it there for the moment more reaction from you a little later in washington in the meantime thanks very much cohen reporting there well fred we're from the christian science monitor terrorist target points and so he personally experience poor security at domodedovo airport just a few weeks ago. you know i think that we will we know that is the gate way to the north caucasus as far as russian domestic airports go from moscow that may be a reason. but i think it's all so fact that. over the past few years we see terrorists striking in moscow most memorably less than a year ago when two suicide bombers hit the moscow metro. i think they find
1:51 pm
vulnerable points i think they notice that security is lax and and they select these places for for max impact and i know since i went through that will just go weeks ago their security measures had really fallen off i suppose it was because of the blackout that they had on december twenty sixth the airport was shut down and and they had all these problems i'm sure introduced may have made them speed up made them perhaps less more careless i don't know what are the reasons and we're speculating here but i think that one thing you have to understand about terrorists are people who want to inflict maximum damage and get maximum attention for it and they study these things and they select their targets it's the see is the way and it is the way everywhere not just in russia but i have noticed
1:52 pm
particularly here that when bad things happen there's a few weeks there's a period in which everybody is striving to change their ways and and plug those holes of whatever that were identified as as contributing to that and then after some time they become more relaxed and careless and after some time after that they've forgotten all about it and i fear this is yet another example of them. for when from the christian science monitor. spoke to political analyst dimitri babich and talk host political commentator piece of though it is not easy to intimidate russia through attacks like these. people getting back to doing their daily lives here unfortunately we do have these kind of attacks but people are not intimidated by them life will go on as tragic as this event is today number two russian afghanistan warmed up relations in the last few days soon don't discount that if
1:53 pm
somebody sending a signal because you know they've been very good at getting rid of the coalition of the willing america's willing partners in afghanistan russia has made them as was a little baby step there to work on the drugs trade but you know it's you know that could be a doctor we could be connecting at my point is this is outside funding these are people outside funding these people training people in many cases or training people to train other people and outside and it's extremely well documented western media doesn't like to that angle because it makes russia look like it can't deal with the north caucuses and all that yes all our problems down there who would want to have to deal with that kind of a social breakdown that we've had in many cases and we need investment there's unemployment there's actually discrimination poor governance i would say in many ways but there is an initiative and has been initiative to deal with that issue but still we have this why did they come to the world capital why to send a message to keep the training going and keep the money coming in from the outside and this is something that russia is very well aware of and i agree with demons he
1:54 pm
started out here there's still a lot of loopholes here if you look around you know they still have a lot of work to do to stop this kind of activity some loopholes perhaps but certainly security when you when you see it at the metro the airport security is always a far as i'm concerned very impressive but you draw you draw the focus down to the north caucuses here dimitri is peter do you think it's corrected enjoy pointing the finger of blame at that area well if i said the news that that terrorist attack was committed by a. confirmed and obviously. will be the first. one travel investigation since it's such a huge city you just cannot bring it to a standstill even by a major terrorist. but i would get you on what peter has said before you know and then see if. the terrorist. source is. i think the western audience should step to let the states or the european union
1:55 pm
we're not can see the russia part of the west what for us when this terrorist russia is a possible. terrorism is when how do you have terrorism so it's not just a domestic issue it's a global issue. it's like the weakest link. in the west and it's dangerous and difficult to strike at israel israel's security it's very difficult to strike the united states it's a bit easier to strike in europe but europe gets very easily but in russia because it's such a it's basically a new state and it's a porous border these are very porous and they're all sort of communities here so it's just easier to strike a treasure but the problem with russia for these people the terrorist is that russia is not so easily intimidated for example spain in spain the terrorist immediately had a positive effect on their actions in russia because of its political system and
1:56 pm
because of all the many reasons they can strike again if it came it became there's no result and if we have a north caucuses connection here too we have very huge immigrant communities from central asia i mean we have a people mixed in here very easily in very strong communities right here it's very good coverage here because they're not they're not wiretapping the technology isn't really they're not no he's dropping i mean of course you could find individuals and groups and in clans that could be very dangerous but there is so again. security wise as so many people would think it would think that russia is all about russia's very very many francs and its easy place to blend in and to organize these types of terrorist attacks. if you just joined us breaking news this hour here on r.t. a bomb has gone off at moscow's main airport domodedovo earlier today at four thirty pm moscow time so far we understand that thirty five have been killed and one
1:57 pm
hundred thirty have been injured sixty have been admitted to hospitals and the russian government on this opinion has said he will provide financial help to all those affected also had word from the white house spokesman speaking on behalf of president obama who has condemned the outrage and has sent condolences to the russian people. the airport itself is certainly the biggest and busiest here in moscow one of three airports it's home to something like seventy seven airlines from around the world who i should say home as such but it's a destination for seventy seven. russian and international who come to dominate the vote today was a very busy time and it speculated that it was a suicide bomb that went off in the arrivals area of moscow's domodedovo airport to begin with it was speculated that it was in the baggage reclaim area but just
1:58 pm
through from that area is the arrivals hall the waiting area where many people from outside of the airport can wait for passengers coming off their planes where they can meet and greet those who are waiting for them and many security experts are saying this sort of set up is typical of most airports around the world and that clearly any member of the public can make their way into that area without any security measures whatsoever and it's now speculated and almost certainly agreed by the investigators there but a suicide bomb was detonated in that waiting area and this is r t bringing the latest developments and reaction here in the russian capital and from around the world the news continues stay with us. the book.
