2:30 pm
clearly suggest that terrorists don't really care about nationality that they're they're just killing machines what's really shocking here to malta is this blast in context of the previous wars russia has suffered from a succession of horrendous terrorist attacks over the last year and a lot and their health there were the moscow metro suicide bombings last month last march there was the attack on the passenger train a little over a year ago also russia is falling victim to terrorism on a regular basis and only recently has the united states and the west in general started to sort of knowledge that this is part of national carries and not just washes the mass they get shoes russia has been saying for years that there has to be a global effort to fight it it's not sold the russians responsibility although russia is in many ways much more vulnerable to terrorism than other western states about the security aspect. is a more. efficient. similar situation that you see and many
2:31 pm
other airports where it was in the area where people who came in from public areas and people who come in all flights know that's similar to so many airports around the world so what is security experts saying about this is this something that you have to learn more about now and they've been told to listen about the port. well you know there are many speculations on the issue but what right now remains an enigma still like the people people are trying to track down the route of who who is behind it security experts point out that these monsters could be actually you know and because the purpose of those attacks you know many people are just asking themselves why why is this happening and there is an opinion that they could be staging the attacks to raise funds from international terrorist networks you know to sort of hold that they can pull it off when they're in a wash it is not as difficult to pull. pull it off as i say in the united states
2:32 pm
for using suicide bombers they sort of make their message even more graphic and more about this message we talked a while and far as the security experts take a listen. there are tool important notes here for international observers number one is that this attack against moskos airport which was bloody this is a massacre it is also a message to the entire international community that the terrorists have been able to discover more areas where governments in general in moscow and particular but any other airports around the world will have to pay attention to these are areas not protected by security measures so that is something that now the international community would have to look at very seriously i think that in the next few weeks there would be a important push both in washington in brussels the european capital and of course
2:33 pm
in moscow to sit down together and think of a proposal that the united nations should have an agency that would go after those who are in fighting for violence worldwide across the borders. well also russian security experts security officials believe that terrorist groups operating in russia and do get funding from abroad some of the members are actually known to have been trained abroad so really to stop this there has to be an international effort going to washington as you've already reported this being a message of condolence from the president we're seeing a developing resetting of relations improve relations between washington and moscow do you think something like this could unite the countries together even more. you know bill and isn't is like this are just supposed to bring countries together because after all it's a common goal to prevent things like this from happening now everybody here is talking about terrorism as a common threat that the international community has to fight it together but they
2:34 pm
were at a rate hasn't always been like this for a long time the west would see the terrible things that terrorist had done in russia some sort of rebel movement some separatist or whatever they used to call them but now it's very much clear to everyone that these thugs are a threat to the whole of the international community and their actions cannot be justified by anything but again it took the west a while to realize this thanks very much indeed for the moment. throughout the day . in washington. just remind you we're reporting on the incident the bomb explosion that went off at moscow's main airport earlier today four thirty pm moscow time so far thirty five people confirmed dead one hundred thirty injured and at least sixty people have been taken to hospitals across the russian capital many of them in a critical condition. outside one of the joys of life so.
2:35 pm
tell us more what do we know about those who are now in hospital. while it's reported that here around half of all the hospitalized people are in critical condition in total it's thought that at least one hundred thirty people were injured and over sixty people have been hospitalized altogether the injuries. most of them have been cause it's reported that they have been caused by shrapnel from this explosive device so the blast happened at around four thirty pm which means that the ambulance ambulances who are delivering these people to hospitals be had a difficult time moving through the traffic this was the beginning of the evening rush hour so police had to be scored many of these ambulances to be able to get the injured people to proper medical treatment as soon as possible the injured were sent to various hospitals across the city to several hospitals in moscow region but
2:36 pm
we're getting reports from the authorities that they may be transferred to larger federal medical centers in order to provide in order to provide proper medical assistance especially if they have severe severe injuries there are also reports that are foreign citizens who are caught up in this attack as well for example an italian citizen and a french citizen reportedly were injured in this blast and there are also unconfirmed reports that. a british citizen may have been killed in this attack but the british embassy is currently checking these reports hotlines have also been opened both for psychological help and board transfer because. such numbers of the both feet and of the injured especially the injured it is quite likely that many donors will be needed to transfer for fresh blood to help them.
2:37 pm
we heard reports that people there involved in this incident were actually helping emergency services push those who were injured or indeed those were killed outside of the airport baggage trolleys helping the emergency services who was the general impression they did despite the problems of about the rush hour traffic did the emergency services respond quickly and efficiently. clearly the media is filled with reports from eyewitnesses on the internet radio people are calling everybody sharing information and data and so for most of the witnesses it's not everybody said that ambulances did really come very quickly and were able to transport the dangers to hospitals across the city was still psychologist teams of psychologists are still working at the airport at the moment they're also working to the various medical centers across the city because definitely this attack
2:38 pm
obviously came on expected but it is involved in affected so many people it was definitely a shock not only to those who were injured in this in this blast but to everybody at the airport at that time you know has been offered porting from outside one of moscow's hospitals thanks very much indeed for that update more from you later here . for more reaction i'm joined by ivan eland he's a political analyst from the independent institute he joins us live from washington d.c. so what were the terrorists trying to achieve here by carrying out this attack at an international airport where both russians and foreigners would be affected. well i think you know the terrorists usually try for shock value. on nine eleven in the united states for instance they had a tremendous shock waves they try to destabilize the society create fear that's why
2:39 pm
they call it terrorism it to induce terror and it's usually to kill civilians for political purposes and in this case given russia's past history could possibly be the work of groups from the north caucasus chechnya but of course we don't know that yet so and i think basically there's a danger and this applies to any government whether in the european union russia the united states. the they must be cautioned not to overreact to this because sometimes terrorism. is used to deliberately make the stronger party the government over react with draconian measures and this only aggravates things and of course that helps the terrorists because they get more funding the more support from whatever. ethnic or sectarian group they represent so and this is a phenomenon that terrorists use that worldwide and. i think whether no matter
2:40 pm
where you are the government should be measured in its reaction to this was the most has been a victim of a similar incident not long ago last month with a mosque in metro bombings more security measures have been introduced of course since then now we see another terrible attack happening today is it really possible to prevent these sort of attacks especially bearing in mind that people are prepared to kill themselves in the process. well that's the problem with suicide bombers is that they're willing to die and that gives them. you know they don't have to escape so they can just walk into a crowd and the problem with airports is you can tighten up security and i think. the russian president has taken the right approach to to keeping the airport open instead of closing it down adding more security because these places have to have some public access or completely defeats the whole purpose of going there whether it's a train station or airport and you can certainly tighten up security to
2:41 pm
a certain extent but you know anybody can walk into a rival lounge of the airport and that seems what happened here and it's you know people need to get in and out of there it's when they're when they're picking people up or that sort of thing and the same goes for the departure lounge so i and the same goes for train stations and that sort of thing you can provide an increased security but it's not foolproof it's not one hundred percent and really you need to no matter what country is the victim of terrorism you need to isolate the causes of what's causing it and deal with the root cause of terrorism i think. this is an attack on an international airport of course it involves not just russians but foreigners and we're just learning that two britons have been confirmed to be among the thirty killed today in that attack no so as everybody keeps saying this isn't just russia's problem this is a global problem tell us what will this do they will in washington d.c.
2:42 pm
what does this do for relations between russia and america when we see in the in the very recent policy improvements in relations what will this unite the countries even more and indeed russia with other countries around the world. well let me take those two issues separately first of all islam growing islamism is a global phenomenon but the terrorism is usually caused by even splinter groups within the islamist. movement and those are usually pretty local with local causes for instance al qaeda attacks the united states for its foreign policy that sort of thing so it seems like a global movement but it's really not that coordinated various groups attack various countries for various reasons and it's usually local the second your second question i think it will make the two countries go together because to some extent they do perceive it as a global phenomenon even though i think that's an erroneous perception but but also simply the humanity of it you know after nine eleven the world reached out to the
2:43 pm
united states i think after this really unfortunate and horrible incident certainly brok obama and the people of the united states will reach out to russia and i think if anything and certainly we've just come off the start treaty positive developments and other developments positive between the two countries so i think tragedy like this you know brings everybody together at the human level and i think we need a little bit more of that in international politics we tend to get you know wrapped up and you know who's ahead and who's behind in what who's interested is in that sort of thing but you know this kind of this type of terrorism attack is really a cowardly attack no matter who does it for what reason you know they may have in their minds they have a great cause but this is simply going and slaughtering innocent people who are doing nothing more than trying to fly on an airplane so you know at the human level we're all connected and this is unacceptable in
2:44 pm
a matter what your cause is thanks very much indeed political analysts from the independent institute in washington d.c. good to have you know and he just remind you the latest news we had. we've just received here in r.t. that two britons have been confirmed among the thirty five killed. port today so far one hundred thirty have been confirmed injured just to reiterate the international aspect of this that the largest airport here in moscow twenty two million passengers went through the airport last year and seventy seven russian and international airlines fly to this destination just to remind you also that the event took place the incident took place at one thirty g.m.t. that's four thirty pm in the afternoon a very busy time there at the airport and the bomb went off suspected to be a suicide bomb it went off in the arrivals hall of the airport while president. delayed his trip to the swiss town of divorce which is hosting the annual world
2:45 pm
economic forum in stead he stayed in moscow and addressed the nation well now let's get more from artie's or emmett who's actually traveled to. laura tell us what international reaction have we had to this moscow bombing where you are. well we. who are in from all over europe and indeed internationally a lot from leaders who will be lost during this week the president has telephone conversations with a variety of different leaders including the u.k. prime minister david cameron also the king of spain one hollows carlos the first spoke to him on the telephone the polish president. come out all ski also called him as did president hosni mubarak of egypt. more details condolences that we've heard about william hague the u.k. foreign secretary said that he was deeply shocked. this explosion and this loss of
2:46 pm
life and he sent his condolences to the victims and to their families we also heard from nato chief. who offered his solidarity he said president medvedev of russia as a whole we're in this fight together he said this is a common thread that we have to band together and face united also president sarkozy of france who will be here this weekend he expressed his solidarity in the face of what he called a barbaric and cowardly act messages of come out of germany. a letter to president expressing her dismay and disgust as she said this attack and the german foreign ministry also condemned what they called a dreadful bloody attack in the strongest so really a lot of condolences coming from various countries all expressing the fact russia is part of a common. enemy in the fight against terror as you mentioned the international aspect when this have any effect at all on proceedings the last meeting.
2:47 pm
well it's very unfortunate timing over president medvedev was supposed to come here and give the keynote speech. on wednesday night now as we know his trip has only been. cancelled. but it's not clear whether he will be arriving to give that keynote speech and that will certainly send a message that he wants to stay at home and support his people during this time but also it will send a message to the people. that he might not want to send desperately unfortunate timing for him because it is a great accolade to be asked to give this keynote speech at davos also there's another session in which he was do you support to support on the next steps towards russian modernization and that includes the foreign investment climate and the building of confidence in business and government in russia again obviously the sorts of the president with the victims and their families but it would be very unfortunate if he wasn't able to participate in those two sessions. thanks very
2:48 pm
much indeed reporting live from reporter norah emmett. well many passengers traveling to. the airport express train about troubles from. station in central moscow and france is that right now. you've met people traveling from the airport back into the city what are they saying about. well it's been a lot of shock and a lot of dismay some people were and many people were scattered about the airport when it happened some people thought it was construction work they had no idea bomb had actually gone gone off there was dust falling from the ceiling isn't it seemed a bit odd to them but they had no idea just how how abnormal the situation actually was a lot of people said they didn't actually see or hear anything but they smelled a lot of heavy smoke and got on the train out of the airport as soon as possible
2:49 pm
this train is about forty kilometers away i'm sorry the distance is about forty kilometers away from the airport to get into this station so it does offer them a very quick ride to avoid traffic so a lot of passengers were talking with each other about their experiences on the train before it before they got here and their passports were checked by security a lot of people were warned before their planes landed what was going to be happening at the airport and they were very worried that maybe people were there waiting for them that family members had been waiting for them and something to happen and they there was no way to confirm that until they landed at more taxing and could get on their phones and confirm that so those were some very nerve wracking times others. actually hadn't taken off or were were about to get on their airplanes when news came that. had been bombed and had to get on the phone with loved ones who are going to be waiting for them to avoid the problem so
2:50 pm
there is a lot of anxiety here trains are still stopping by here at the station and letting people off and so everyone sort of settling down but these first couple of hours have there's just spent a lot of shock and a lot of dismay over what's happened. ok well thanks very much indeed. reporting from providence got roadways station in central moscow just to give an idea of the location of where she is she's in the hold of most. as i say and it's about twenty three kilometers twenty four kilometers out to the main airport domodedovo airport which carries all the passengers from central moscow and indeed back from the airport to moscow on a regular basis and now the international airport itself is russia's largest airport in terms of passenger traffic connecting moscow to hundreds of cities around the world as i say it's located twenty two kilometers southeast of the center of the capital and the number of passengers using the airport exceeds twenty two million
2:51 pm
a year over nine hundred thousand people use the airport during the winter holidays in two thousand and ten two thousand and eleven and currently seventy seven airlines both russian and for regular flights to go ahead and flights from the airport covered two hundred forty one national and international routes it's one of the three major airports along with. what we're bringing you those pictures there of the arrivals area where that bomb blast went off at four thirty pm moscow time the explosion took place in actually the waiting area there as part of the arrivals hall it's usually filled with family members and taxi drivers meeting newly arrived international passengers and of a journalist a member of russia's council on defense and foreign policy says it's not by chance that part of the airport was chosen. the worst of all is that of course if you go through security. you know of course through the state of the art security.
2:52 pm
here they actually organized nicol in an area which is not normally checked in any airport anywhere in the world knows the waiting area where people wait for those passengers who ride it. if memory serves me well about seven or eighty years ago there was a priest teacher in moscow. to check every one of the big terminal. interleave mounts up whether you want why you want to meet people you still have to you know get checked i think the whole thing was leaked said five or six years ago. and he's a results so you know the whole thing is very sad it's a very sad lesson all of us normal passengers are used. but it's also very sad lesson for our security services and the police who i understand in this last
2:53 pm
couple of years it's maybe this side of the legal atmosphere is more lax if we compare it to a major international airport so you can't really say that the security procedures in proceedings don't want to talk about. that actually the same person with heathrow or j.f.k. or shall go in paris it's relatively the same having suburbs in this last two or three years the security procedure for those oil supply have been improved. it's not just me it's the people who specialize in these things which describe the security procedure at them when they're the most state of the art. but of course even the major terrorist threat eason brusha if he's of course necessary to think once again. maybe unfortunately week implementing security control and security procedures. for everyone and this is why i am flying tomorrow
2:54 pm
from from another airport i will be surprised if i am stopped so maybe even searched the ben ferguson show airport and i would accept you know i would accept it as a normal citizen i would accept because these are explicable security arrangements given the circumstances. well peter power a u.k. based crisis management specialist from the voice all in sultans told r.t. that keeping things moving following a terrorist attack is essential. but first thing to realize that it won't be just moscow airport where tightening up you get about twenty million passengers flying through that airport which actually is a lot less than say heathrow but nonetheless it's a major hump of that part of the world but other question i've already heard in the last few minutes is was that the real target could something have happened here with a bomb exploded on route to somewhere else for example if a bomb detonated in the air in very near any airport you're going to show it to
2:55 pm
a wider area it could be detonated by a mobile phone providing it's at a low level so there's a chance that the target might have been somewhere else this is the first attack in moscow since march of last year where two female suicide bombers blew themselves up and if you give way back to two thousand and four again two female suicide bombers which is almost unique blew up an aircraft in the air to separate aircraft through a photo. of a head of security that you actually detain women but then let them on so light think that the security has been tightened since they believe me right now all major airports around the world are looking into this and asking themselves these sort of questions it's not just moscow one of the questions you're going to ask is well who the perpetrators mean all these events go into three stages there's always a sort of mayhem and then as a mastermind and as a manhunt the mayhem is where we are now the dust is hardly circled could it be
2:56 pm
juco you know it was already talked about bringing threats of terrorism to the streets of russia he is probably going to be the number one suspect here but it's too early to point the blame when now to what's happening now i'm sure as it will be in any country is gathering the evidence and finding out where is a cause and most importantly could something happen in the next hour the next day the next. this is the beginning of a campaign and so far as far as i'm aware we haven't got anybody admit to the crime one of the rules with dealing with terrorism in the twenty first century is not to stop everything if you can possibly keep things going it is a judgment of moscow airport that they can allow some flights in a well that's the core you have to remember that terrorism doesn't actually rely on the bang they were lies on the fear of the bank and so yes we've had a catastrophe and by the sound of it many deaths today which is a tragedy but overall actually you are probably a lot more likely to be hit by lightning than it would be to be killed by a terrorist bomb it is just the random nature of terrorism so if we can carry on
2:57 pm
business as usual as quickly as we can so much the better i mean there are companies all around the world like for example one in the u.k. called the anvil company who actually follow their clients through satellite navigation around russia and so on and they're busily now trying to give them advice where they go to the airport or whether they stay behind and so on that's my point about a lot of people affected beyond this but the issue is gather that intelligence as most important make sure your security is good as it reason we can be and remember we're talking about weapons of mass effect here not weapons of mass destruction so we still don't know who did it whether it's an affiliate of al qaeda we simply don't know yet. well this is artie coming to you live from the russian capital on the day that moscow's main airport has been attacked by what is supposed to by many experts to be a suicide bombing it occurred at one thirty pm g.m.t.
2:58 pm
four thirty pm moscow time a busy time when many airlines from all over the world are flying in particular from europe and we understand that two britons are among the thirty five killed one hundred thirty have been confirmed injured and we're getting reaction and analysis from not just here in moscow but also from around the world stay with us live here on r.t. as we continue our coverage of the day that moscow airport has been attacked by suicide bombers. plug plug. plug. culture is that so much as i can which of course he was on it comes up here today in america exceptionalism goes to the very foundation of all most american see the
